Can Tesla's Full Self Driving Handle This 118 km Road Trip?

  • I finally got a hold of Tesla's (Supervised) Full Self Driving v12.3.3 on my 2023 RWD Model 3! I put together this ramshackle filming set up and put it to the test on a 118km autonomous road trip from Ajax to Hamilton, to see if FSD could do the road trip without any disengagements! I wound up with one questionable disengagement and a couple of interventions; but overall, not bad! This is the worst that autonomous driving will ever be, and it handled some pretty interesting situations on the highway involving letting people merge in when their turn signals were on, and bailing out on lane changes when some absolute dolts decide to tear arse out from behind into the lane FSD was about to merge into.

2nd intervention where the speed drops always happens to me too in the same spot every time. Guess it's because it's a "construction zone" maybe?

@10:40 I think FSD gets confused on road speeds when it sees a change in the road designation and hasn't seen a speed limit sign yet. The 401 seems to have lots of places where the mapping detects a new road description even though you are still on the same express lane. Once it sees another 100 KPH sign it should pick it back up. Check your settings to see if you are in the setting that Ai SETS max speed. Under Autopliot settings you can change it so you can scroll up to the desired speed.

Yeah I have it disabled because it was going waaaay too fast. Would get me a speeding ticket lol. But yeah your reasoning sounds plausible, hopefully they fix it

Yeah, thats why it was important for me to not cut out any of the drive

Highway still on a different stack from city streets I think, so you just have the auto lane change upgrade from autopilot on highways as far as I know.
Autopiliot on the 401 has been a game changer for me. FSD seems to perform equally well braking for me.

FSD went to single stack with FSD v12 I believe, it doesn't use regular EAP any more

the thing is, in the US maybe those are the most normal roads to drive on, but FSD needs to work very well on harder roads too, because here in Europe the majority of the roads are part of the second type

Where FSD will have an easy time is European highways. Unlike the US where all the lanes are at random speeds, in Europe it's quite strict about fastest lane being on the inside and slowest on the outside.

Total & utter insanity. The driving abilities of other drivers must always be suspect & leaving your safety to a computer is insane. You WILL end up stranded somewhere inconvenient or downright dangerous to be t-boned by one of those 3 tonne things that yanks are addicted to.This highlights the disparity in size of vehicle use in the good ole US of A. These are what I term "normal" size cars being thrown into the madness of combat with trucks, most of which are not held to the same safety standards as real cars. All in all I wish you good night & good luck

What if the guy in front doesn't use signals to change lanes or turn.

Based on my experience thus far, it will slow down and not pass/get parallel to vehicles that get close to the lane lines
