    February half term and it’s a family road trip from the south coast near Bournemouth to Scotland and staying in a beautiful cabin not far from Glencoe in the Dalmally area.
    On the way we have stop off points including South London, Gatwick, Newcastle, Northumberland and Edinburgh.
    I’ll take you along on the trip. It’s a great chance to see how the new 2024 Tesla Model 3 Long Range which was code named “Highland” during development copes with life in the Scottish Highlands.
    Loaded with luggage and family and driven in cold and wet weather how will it do for real-world driving range, efficiency and charging?
    Most of the trip is actually run on convoy with a 2021 Long Range so we can compare exactly if the new car is more efficient and how much further it can go. If you are thinking of changing your 2021 to a new Highland this will be a crucial video to compare battery usage when driven side by side on the same roads at the same speed at the same time.
    Plus we see some amazing scenery along the way.

    Thanks to your videos Richard, last summer I took my MY RWD on a trip from UK to Poland. 1000.6 miles one way. Have done this trip over the years with multiple cars with different family configuration. This time with 2 kids (1 and 17) and my wife. Never we have arrived so comfortably. Range was excellent, economy great. 1 Wh/m more than my average around the UK. Car was loaded to the glass roof and we were not going particularly slow. Super experience and I would never decided to do that with little kid if it wasn't for Your videos. Well I would never go for Tesla if I didn't stumble across this channel. Thanks and keep up good work!

    Nice video, Richard. It just shows that there are no worries driving a BEV to places like the Scottish Highlands, Lake District, Welsh mountains, etc. Particularly in a Tesla with their superb effciency, but I've done road trips in my VW ID3. It's just not a problem. On the Scottish highlands, I'd recommend it to anyone who'd love something a little out of the way. Been twice, Xmas and New Years, and stayed in a nice warm chalet in Cannich. From there you can walk into the mountains [don't get lost or fall into a snow drift]. The scenery is absolutely superb.

    Thanks so much for this one Richard, it has very much whetted my appetite for my family's forthcoming road trip from Hampshire to Applecross and Skye for a holiday at Easter. Not in a Highland mind, but in the sweetspot unicorn that is the mighty Model 3 RWD Long Range, that I managed to grab last year for not much more than the Standard Range. It's gonna be an interesting trip as I will be beyond the Supercharger zone for seven days so will need to use non SC public charging for the first time. Chargeplace Scotland, you had better be up to it. And we will be taking on the famous Bealach Na Ba road pass too, absolutely cannot wait.

      Awesome! I’d like to run the highland alongside the rwd LR for comparison one day.

      @@RSEV yep thanks, good advice, got the RFID card start of this year. I will do my best to record whole trip Miles/kWh (going to be about 1500 miles total) and actual total kWh used and will report back. I've been seeing between 4 and 4.3 so far on longer circa 250 mile Winter time motorway trips with a car full of bodies and bags. Summertime general mixed usage for commuting etc around the A3 M27 corridors I was seeing 5.3 Miles/kWh. I've been very very impressed with efficiency and charge speeds are off the scale.

    • @scorzonthedawes
      @scorzonthedawes 9 месяцев назад

      @@RSEV Total trip 1520 miles around 364 kWh of energy efficiency circa 4.2 miles/kWh. Given that the car was rammed full, you couldn't get a fag paper in there, the weather at times was atrocious (Storm Kathy), it was low single figures temps on those early starts, we did a LOT of up and down in Scotland including the highest road pass in the UK several times, the vast majority was 60-70 on dual/motorway and I allowed the car to do whatever pre con it wanted to so that our charging speeds were optimal, I am very very pleased. I think that's pretty damned impressive for the old tech Model 3 🙂

    A Highland in the Highlands, maybe it's a first. I don't own a Tesla yet but I have hired 4 in the last 2 years for long UK leisure trips. I had no range anxiety as the super charging network removes any concerns about 'filling up'. Also many hotels offer free charging. Great video 👍

    Thanks for this. I have a 2019 Tesla Model 3 Long-Range Dual Motor AWD and while I love it and it’s not having any issues I’m wondering if I should trade in for a new one this year or not. So info on the new and improved one is much welcomed

    • @tafl-9198
      @tafl-9198 10 месяцев назад +5

      Dont you think it would be better to wait 4 years or so ?
      A 2019 Model 3 is very similar to a 2023 Model 3 so your car is by no means outdated.
      In 4 years there will most likely be even more improvements to the Model 3.

    • @haolsen3607
      @haolsen3607 10 месяцев назад +2

      I’m thinking about the same, but my 2019 still feels really nice, the thing that I would enjoy the most in the newer one would be the sound level. We do some really long roadtrips every year so better noice insulation would be great

    • @wemakecookie
      @wemakecookie 10 месяцев назад +2

      I recommend taking a test drive of the new one and determining if it's enough of an upgrade to justify its purchase. The main improvements are a quieter cabin, 8% more efficient, better/softer suspension, better materials, better looks (imo), and various other little improvements.

      Same boat here. 2020 LR so probably about the same as yours. I've had creaking front arms replaced, leakey boot (twice), seat switches replaced twice FOC at home (wife's fault, so great service) and coming to end of warranty. Really loved the car but all the improvements of the HM3 are tempting me, just wish it had depreciated a bit less. Looking forward to the day can buy one of these with a bit of depreciation from RSEV! :)

    • @blueplanet1048
      @blueplanet1048 10 месяцев назад

      It depends how you look at it. Technically it’s actually better to sell yours now since it will actually still retain a good value. It’s already over 4 years old if it does get older it will also lose more value so you will end up paying more anyways.
      The refreshed model 3 just seems to be a much better built car basically perfecting almost everything that it needed.
      If you had a 2022 - 2023 obviously it would be better to wait for a year or two depending on your financials.
      Personally for me if I had a 2019 I definitely would get the 2024 model especially knowing it has a better ride quality and noise insulation which makes a biggest difference in a car.
      Cheers!🥂

Absolutely no issue with charging but we did have to choose hotels with destination chargers. Must say the experience would have been very different had we not had access to the Supercharger network.

    Always find these videos interesting. Not sure if you are still running your old Model S within the business, but the update in January has cured the auto wiper issues on my 2016 85D. I took it to southern Italy last October/November covering 5,500 miles in six weeks. Used mostly free superchargers, only occasionally using an 11kW AC charger in town. So the whole trip cost less than €70. I grabbed a coffee and a free top up at Exeter services on the way home and another Model S driver said i looked tired. I told him I'd just returned from southern Italy and he said he was on his way home from southern France, then joked that you can't do long journeys in EVs.

    Tesla need to get in touch with you as a Rep. By far the best, most informative, Tesla channel.
    I currently drive a 30kwhr Leaf (which honestly does fine for 95% of our driving .... City-dwellers really need to check out old Nissan Leafs as "free" transport). However, I need to consolidate from 2 to 1 car at some point. It was between a Kia/Hyundai or a Model 3. The sheer effortless ownership of a Tesla is swinging it for me. I wish they had a 7 year warranty.

    Beautiful scenery in Scotland. So jealous!
    I think journeys like this suit an EV very well where you can plan your route ahead with stops and stay somewhere EV friendly.
    It's a bit more difficult if you're going cross country on A and B roads and wouldn't normally stop for a break to see friends a couple of hours away.
    In these cases, the charging infrastructure really starts to show its weakness.
    The government should be ensuring more chargers are installed as EV sales increase. Otherwise, it'll only get worse, not better.

    Richard - great video and spectacular scenery. However I need to pull you up on your use of percentages to compare the speed of charging between the vehicles (or range for that matter). Given that they have different size batteries making a comparison using percentages is confusing if not simply inaccurate. It does work if they have the same size battery but not otherwise. Keep up the good work.

    Did the whole NC500 last Oct in my 2022 M3SR. Didn't stay at a single hotel/airbnb with charger, but still found it fine to just topup at Chargeplace Scotland's 50kW chargers whilst doing food shop. Only day I had to sit at a charger for quite a while was the Isle of Skye day, as that's quite a huge island, so I needed to add +100% for the day. In total it was £140 for 1266mi
    Also saw loads of Belgian plated Model Y's around Fort William, Glenfinnan and Glencoe. So obviously they felt really comfortable to do such a trip!

You don’t benefit from owning Tesla in Scotland from charging point of view, specifically up north where you get slow 50kw DC chargers and up to 22kw AC. Still, many hotels offer free charging. I do a Glasgow to Duxford and just top up once with petrol. I think it would take 28 minutes Charge time. But looking at that new Renault 5 that does around 200 miles real world you’d need to full charge on the way down. Love these comparisons.
    Utuber seen through Glass stayed there but drove in his brand new RS6 that he emitted was shocking on fuel maybe should have done it in a Tesla.
    Apologies for the weather up here. When you know the roads so we’ll your editing is a bit off to the journey suggested. 😂

    Great info Richard. Only thing I'd say is take out 10% for expected degredation from a new car to be more realistic.

    3,000 miles in 3wks, in the past you sell at 5,000 miles, so in 2wks it'll be the first used highland in the uk, can i register first interest?

    I've done York to Portsmouth on a single charge with plenty left in the tank, even then drove for a few hours in France on the other side too ('21 M3 LR). EV range in the UK really isn't an issue at all.

    Hi Richard, excellent videos. I am considering upgrading from a 2021 model 3 to the new one. Quite a few people have mentioned a constant whiny hum from the computer/monitor fan. Have you noticed that when the car is idle? Might be a concern to me.

    Long trips in a Tesla have never really been a prob. The issues is with the non tesla public chargers. Have an EV (tax reasons) & it's a complete lottery.

    Hello Richard.
    Enjoyed the video.
    A question - Does the reflection in the windscreen of the ambient light strip along the dashboard annoy you?
    I suspect I would have to have it turned off.

    Can I ask where you dog was kept during the journey? A conundrum for me when considering a Tesla (as I have a dog - a Cavapoo!) is between the M3 and the MY due to its hatch which is easier for dogs.

    Hi Richard, These range tests are really useful. One question that always occurs to me is what speeds do you do (especially for motorway driving)? I currently own a Nissan Leaf and know that speed has a really big impact on my range capability. Cheers David

    4 miles per kWh, is fantastic. Something that I can only dream about, in my Volvo C40 🤦🏻 (2.4 miles per kWh this time of year). And that’s in driving Miss Daisy mode.
