Great show... I love that diversity was shown.... Yes I do remember this show it was one of my favorites.. one of my favorite characters was Jason who was supposed to be the slow talking intimidating black.. even though he spoke slowly oftentimes what he said many times made perfect sense... He wasn't dumb he just viewed life from a different perspective than most folks.
I had an eleven grade history teacher. Everybody liked and respected him. We were sad that he went to another school, but we miss him alot and he was like mr.pete dixon.
ok IK have to say this ep has a problem at the end. It pixilizes and repeats the last bit. This and several other episodes have that problem. It really should be fixed!
Very glad that I learned of this show through a reference on an episode of the Simpsons; very well written show, though the laugh track feels misplaced most of the time
There is simply no way a teacher would ever leave during the term. AFTER the END of the term is one thing, but during a term no way. Especially not Pete Dixon.
They made the point in the first episode that WWHS is on the "right" side of town. The school you're talking about is the one they rescued Richie from.
It's "television" yes, but I remember that the demeanor of the main adult characters in regards to the way most people looked, dressed and spoke to be very realistic. As far as "Black schools" in 1969-1970, I attended one for a few months in '70 and the faculty for the most part, had control of the rowdy kids because in L.A. Unified they were still using the paddle. This is one instance where the scripture "Spare the rod..." definitely worked.
True enough in some cases I suppose. I was “bussed” to an inner city school Nashville TN in the early 70’s and I recall gym class in particular was more like “Lord of the Flies”! Even so, I was grateful for the experience, and the survival skills I learned that helped me in the real world!
I am fascinated by the dress code on the show because I don’t see any emails and even pants by this time true I was in junior high when this shit started so maybe I’ll be different later than junior high I was allowed to wear jeans to school. I live in the Midwest my high school we are wearing tube tops and overalls and very very very mini skirts with big platform shoes. I laughed looking at the pictures from then and think gosh how did we get away with it? the tube tops under a pair of overalls looks like you’re just wearing overalls and the short dresses we were unbelievably short with the big platform shoes yeah let’s just say it was hooker wear
emails? This season of the show portrayed 1969, not the mid-to-late 70s. In the mid-70s, I never saw anyone wear tube tops to school or anywhere else. Mini-skirts, yes, platform shoes, yes, and pants, yes, but the other, no.

Was too young too see this show when it aired.
Reminiscent of the 70's White Shadow - similar vibe + hoops
The episode titles are all off.
I was there, it was a ground breaking show. Definitely part of the 60s movement, of non traditional, new ideas, generation gap, anti-war.
Ahhh, the days when one could afford to be idealistic.

Great to see the old shows

The Actor that plays the teacher Pete reminds me of Marlon Brando.
If you watch his face from time to time you can see a young Marlon.

Good role model
The guy at 16.40 I just realized played on a Jeffersons episode as Florence's fiancee, the deeply religious mailman.
I've forgotten his actual name, but he was a newscaster in Los Angeles also.
This is so unrealistic. I taught in a black school for nine years and it was pure hell. I do love this show, though. It's a nice dream.

I grew up in a town that had no black people at all. This was my first time seeing them.
Tyler High.
