- We were shocked to find a stranded, almost dead castaway on this uninhabited island! Our plans have taken a turn and now we will be heading back in the direction we came to get help. It's touch and go, but we will do all we can.

As a vet tech, I'm so impressed that you guys did the right thing and fed her small amounts. Refeeding syndrome would have definitely been a huge risk for her. Thank you for doing it the right way! 🫶

@@psyience3213 Yes, to some degree because it involves the very basics of bodily functions pertaining to fluid levels, electrolyte balance, organ function, etc... Refeeding syndrome is where a dramatic change occurs in the body's chemistry when food is reintroduced to a body that has been in starvation mode. Shunting fluids and electrolytes to pertinent organs is a normal everyday occurrence and is perfectly fine in a healthy specimen, but when the body has been depleted of these basic necessary chemicals and is critically low in fluids, there isn't enough of either in the body to allow for normal digestion. It's like trying to start a car without gas. In these cases, even with humans, feeding tiny amounts, like 1 piece of food the size of a quarter, every hour, is the recommended way to refeed. And I should add that an animal in that condition should always be evaluated by a vet asap because it can very quickly result in multi organ failure and death.

so would a sugar free electrolyte drink help best first, again in small doses?
@@psyience3213 The rule for consuming liquids is not the same as consuming food. The only rule for liquids is that you or whoever (whatever) the patient is, doesn't drink so much so fast that it causes vomiting, because the body can't afford to vomit up what little fluid it has left. For liquids, I'd recommend sipping continuously until thirst sensation is quenched. For animals, you'll need to limit the volume because they won't stop and will drink until they vomit - so, a small amount in a bowl every 15 to 30 minutes. The portion is relevant to the size of the animal; Chihuahua vs Great Dane. Approximately enough for 4 swallows. Again, if access to a vet is possible then that is the best choice because drinking water does not rehydrate as efficiently as IV fluids that contain the proper balance of electrolytes. For humans, electrolytes are probably fine (remember I'm a vet) but for animals I'd stick to fresh clean plain water. Electrolyte drinks like Pedialyte can spike glucose and without blood work, that may be the wrong thing to introduce, so it's best not to chance it.

Wow, can you imagine being stranded on an island with nothing to eat or drink? Her whole look changed after her bath. She's beautiful and I really hope you keep her. Thank you for rescuing her from starvation. She loves her new humans!

Food and water is no longer a problem, The only thing she wants now is more cuddles haha :-)

Amazing I’m not a cat person but the best cat I ever had picked us, he was stray that showed up and never left. Coolest cat ever.

Coco is already a full member of the crew, We just need to sail back to a vet and get about 50 papers filled out before we can keep going with our trip haha, so worth it though she is so cute and such a fighter.
She is still in rough shape as it has only been a week but we are hoping that she keeps eating and putting on some fat, right now she is a bit of a bone rack, the long hair hides it well.

Still, we've had cats for 35 yrs, & if there's any creature who can defy the odds, it's a cat!

I don't know what your show is about, but after watching you save a cat, you have a new follower!
We are a couple who when on 3 dates then decided to sail around the world together, so we just film our trip and put it up on youtube, we started in Vancouver BC and sailed up to Alaska, then down to Mexico, then to Panama, we are not great at sailing but we are learning as we go and we make a lot of mistakes, but we are having so much fun so far :-)
It never stops bothering me just how cruel some humans can be, but I'm also amazed how many people are willing to help without hesitation. You two gained alot of karma that day, thank you for beeing kind to an animal in need!

Unfortunately Humans can be more dangerous and cruel than nature itself,always disgusts me when Humans are actually given the ability to be able to choose between being kind or cruel and many decide to be cruel and evil.
Karma will always be there for them along the way though and every ill deed is counted against them in the end ( when they are on their Deathbed every bad thing they ever did will come back to haunt them ) and that’s why I always try to be as kind and respectful as I possibly can be to fellow humans and animals and even insects !.
We all have a roll to play in this life and even Wasps 😳 lol 😂.

Don't jump to conclusions. That cat could have gotten there for a number of reasons. People have no way of knowing.

@@sailing.supernova I am an osteopath and treated a veterinary nurse, her partner was also one.
Anytime they went abroad they would help stray cats and dogs.
Her comment to me was: ‘we get all these aggressive pets here, they come in and want to yap and bite you… but these poor street dogs and cats are so often the sweetest little souls who are so happy to get a little attention and help’.
As soon as I can I am going to get a boat and sail and live aboard. Your kindness to Coco has made me add worming tablets to my list of things to take.

The kitty spent long nights in front of the moonlight, waves crashing on shore, praying to whoever was listening that she would be sent some angels to keep her safe and warm and make her belly stop hurting. She dreamed of a land with endless fish and lots of ppl with hugs and kisses. Then one day her angels came and took her to the land she dreamed of 🤍

We are doing everything we can, she was really touch for the first 2 days, its been a week and she is still really rough, the more we look the more we find with her.
But she has a great attitude and is letting us do everything we can to help her.
We are hoping for a big week for her with lots of food and water, she may even get strong enough for her kidneys to handle a bit more medicine that she really needs
We are all hoping for the best for her.

We checked to make sure there was no more kitties, it was a small island so we can say 100% that Coconut was there alone.
We are super happy we found her! She does have a super long tail, and she is all about the cuddles :-)

I subscribed after seeing how you rescued the cat, poor girl needed a break in life, and she hit the jackpot. My little grandson has has brought 2 big cats and a kitten home since last fall. I told him how much the vet bills would be and how much flea control would cost and he had to earn the money if he was going to keep them.

Watching this sent me through a roller coaster of emotions. I was happy sad upset frustrated excited and every other emotion I could think of. I haven't gone through anything like that in a very long time, and I didn't expect a RUclips video to make me feel that way, lol. Meeting people, rescuing animals, giving away things what people need, teaching everyone how to survive and get by with what you have, and having an amazing attitude while doing all of it. It just made me want to be a part of it, and I crave the positive atmosphere you guys put me in. If only the the rest of the world was like this (take note America). I love nature and have always wanted to do things like this, but you guys made me realize you don't need a boat or be halfway across the world to spread kindness and make others happy instead of being a follower and spreading negativity. I pray that you two have long lives and receive the best out of everything. You guys deserve it. You might not know me but consider me a friend.

Some sailors say never take a pet on a cruise: it's bad for the pet and the people. one. That might explain the abandonment, but it does not excuse it.

Cats, I have many over years, will generally eat until they r full and then walk away. My cats did anyway and they were just fine. You are great for helping this little guy

Yes, but when a cat is nearly skin and bones feeding slot of food at one is NOT GOOD and can actually put the body in shock and kill the cat. So he made an educated decision for Coco! 🙏🏼🙌🏼💗

You need cat litter a cat harness and leash to keep her safe on board when sailing rougher seas.

She is a full member of the crew already, there is just going to be a lot of red tape to get her all the papers that she needs.
Most importantly she has to keep eating and get better, she is in really rough shape right now.
We are making a list of things we need for her, we will add a harness and leash to the list :-)
We are hoping a boat comes by today with some more meat, we are almost out. We do have yellow fin tuna that we can feed her though :-)

Cats are becoming quite a thing with you YT sailors. Sailing Holly Blue are cat people as well.
Sailing kiwis have a stray they adopted... Proper boat cat even goes for a swim and rides on the paddle boards back and forth.

Yea she is super calm, we just had some kids on board that came over to hang out with her and she was very nice to them for a full hour.

This is the second time ive watched this video, its so great you have saved coconuts life, the fact that she is dirty shows she is dehydrated . You cared for her correctly , little and often until she recovers . Bless you both .

Y'all earned some good karma and got a sweet new mascot. I'd call it a win for you and the new crew member. She'll help keep pests off the boat. She needs to see a vet for anti parasite meds and vaccines. She's worth it, I can't believe someone left such a nice kitty.
She is now on the mend, the vet put her on a heap of drugs, she is done most of them now. she still has a bit to go but she is doing great :-) and she loves cuddles so much :-)

Coco still has a long way to go but we are both doing everything we can to help her out, she gets food every 3 hours even at night.
We are close to finding most of the things wrong with her and we are building a treatment plan with a vet we have been talking to. she just needs to get stronger so she can handle taking the medicine she needs.
On the plus side even with how sick she is, she is still full of cuddles :-)

And you are right even as sick as she is, she is doing really well on the boat so far!
She does need a lot of medication and some surgery, but she is to weak for any of that right now, so we have changed our plans and are going to get her the help she needs :-)

It is so sad that some slime left the cat behind. What a wretched way to kill the poor thing.

She is doing much better the when we first found her but it has only been 7 days, she is still very sick but getting better, she needs to have a good week. We are feeding her every 3 hours and hope that in 1 week she will be strong enough to take some stronger medicine.

Events like this really make one think about what brought you to that island on that day, which might have been Coco's last if not for you. I believe this may amount to Divine intervention. Im new to you! But as soon as you rescued the cat I was in! I am trying to fill my life with good people, especially good men because as an old woman I find them hard to find. I decided a month ago to start noticing good men and ignoring the A holes. Sort of like when you learn a new word its suddenly everywhere. Manifesting a good planet one good person at a time. Today I found many on your channel. And if no one said anything or you are not aware gone with the Wynns had cats on board for a long time and can probably help answer boating with a cat questions. (Im sure you know but just in case)

We found a cat on an island in a lake once when we were kids.
She could’ve been swept out, floated on flotsam, swam (they do swim if they have to) or fell from a passing boat.
Either way, bloody sterling job you’re doing with her. She lucked out when you two showed up.
My two boys, Basil and Buddy were transfixed by her too!
We Coco has requested that you give Basil and Buddy a boop on the nose and a treat :-)

A little something to help with Coconut’s vet bills. Please keep us posted on her. I’m assuming the former cat people advised you on having a litter box for Coconut?
Thanks heaps for the help. We are not sure who had her before us, she didn't grow up on that small island because she really likes being held and is all about the cuddles.
We have a rubbery thing that we are using as a litter box, it works well but we will be upgrading it as soon as we can.

We are very lucky to have her. Even with how sick she is, she is still the sweetest cat who loves to cuddle, and its only been one week :-)

I can’t believe that poor baby was left there on her own. People can really suck. You guys rock for taking her with you. Rescue animals are always the best. We’ve always rescued animals and they are as grateful as I am. ❤️😊. Coconut is living her best life. She deserves it. What a fantastic personality too. Sweet!

Thank you so much for Saving Coconut! ❤ You can tell by her Body Language that she's Relieved & that she was on High Alert for so long bc she was all alone, that she can finally Relax & Rest, w/ a Full Belly, bc she feels Safe. But, due to how eager she is to be held & pet is a Sign that she was a Pet, not a Feral Stray Cat. Although, even Stray Cats can be Super Sweet VS Feral, even if they've never been Touched by Humans, Coconut's Mannerisms are those of a Domesticated Cat. If they need Help, they almost always instinctively looked to us for it. Thank you for being that for her & she'll repay it in Love & Loyalty 10 Fold!
Pyometra can happen to any Female Animal, usually Dogs/Cats, who weren't Spayed. Since it's been 2 Months since you Posted this Video, I'm hoping Coconut has gotten all sorted out Medically. I'm sure they'll Spay her, which will Remove her Ovaries & Problem Uterus all at 1x. I'll be checking out your Newer Videos to see how your Tiny, New Deck Mate is doing. I wouldn't be Surprised to hear that the Vet DeWormed her, DeFlead, Checked for Mites that typically live in the Sand, gave her all of the necessary Vaccinations (but some are 2 Part Vaccines w/ 1 given & then the 2nd Part is given 1Wk-1Mon later), & if this is a Tropics Region that has Bot Flies, that could've been a concern, as well.
Look into the Pet Supplement "Under the Weather". I take Care of a Colony of Homeless Cats & before I could get them all Fixed 6yrs ago, they were still having Kittens, this Supplement came in handy for the Kittens that needed a Little more Help when weening off of their Mom & the Powdered Step 2 Kitten Milk to Wet/Dry Kitten Food. However, this is now a Staple Item in my House, as you can give a Cat a Tiny Amount who looks like they're not getting all of their Nutrients or who might not be eating as much as they should & this perks them right up & Helps keep all of their Vitamins/Minerals Balanced. You could also give Coconut some Kitten Food Mixed in w/ her Cat Food, as it has a Higher Fat, Protein, etc Content that can Help her Fatten up & will do wonders for her Skin & Fur.
You should consider making & Sharing an Amazon Wish List for Coconut in the Description of your Videos, that People can Order from for her. I made 1 for my Homeless Cat Colony (There was 13, but now there's only 10... Bc 3 disappeared since November. I'm Heartbroken over them.) that I Listed under my Videos & although nobody has Utilized the List, I at least know it's there & know that if someone Purchases any of the Items on there, that it'll be VERY Helpful. Just an Idea!! 😁

Thankyou for finding her , and taking great care .I’ve two rescues “ mother and son” Poor little thing if you did not turn up ( a slow death) you can get a kind of kitty play pen which you will have to secure somehow when maybe up on deck , or a permanent cage attached where she can enter from your boat interior . Not as easy as a dog to keep safe . Sacking tied tight hear and there would be good for cat to grip !! Wish you the best on your travels .. 😊💫
