  • Since its origin in 1995, the Tales series has been a consistent fan favorite of JRPG lovers. Unfortunately, the series never seemed to reach the mainstream appeal of titles like Final Fantasy. Now in 2021, it's clear Bandai Namco and the Tales team were ready to push the series to new heights with the release of Tales of Arise. With a much larger budget and marketing push, the title became the fastest-selling Tales game ever, with over a million copies sold in less than a week. With all eyes on Tales, we knew it was a game we needed to discuss. Enjoy!

This was my first full play through of a Tales game and I can easily say, Tales of Arise is my GOTY.

Tales of Arise was so damn good. The music was probably my favorite part of the game next to the the combat which was phenomenal

Just platinumed it. Have played Xillia 1, Xillia 2 and Berseria before, and this one might be tied for my favorite with Xillia. I guess I'm a sucker for RPGs with tasteful flirting between party members, and in this case it wasn't even just the main 2, there was basically a triple ship going on. I found the 2nd half of the game to be surprisingly stronger than the first, and was one of the few parts of the game that wasn't overexplained. Other people might think that Lenegis was underdeveloped, but I thought it might just be a battle or two so getting to explore a lot of the station was pretty satisfying (plus it has possibly the best song in the game). Given how much they talked about Lenegis and Rena I probably would've been disappointed if they never went there and stopped after the 5 kingdoms. The postgame dungeon was surprisingly short and simple, with extremely fast leveling, which was a nice surprise.
I do agree that the level balancing was a little off at times, especially early on, with bosses jumping 4-6 levels above the areas they're in, and with the XP penalties for being above enemy level the encounter difficulty they wanted was kinda forced without excessive grinding. The only 2 other complaints I had with the game were the excessive pop-in and load times when trying to get into menus right after entering a new area (I played on PS4), and that the ending was a little short, skipping out on talking about how much the worlds merging would affect the whole plan of unifying the peoples (Now possibly with Helganquils too?). I kinda wanted to see them drop the truth bomb on all the Renans about their actual history, but I guess the socio-political ramifications would make a decent setup for a sequel.
Regarding Zones vs. Open-World, I'm on the zones side, mainly because it adds in the "believable abstract distance" between areas. Instead of walking for hours, you walk through one zone, another zone, and your mind fills in the gaps that there was a long period of travel between them. Even with that the 5 kingdoms do feel remarkably close to each other and Dahna pretty small as a whole, though the game is certainly plenty long enough to feel satisfying.
Favorite cutscene - After completing the subquest Her Place, Kisara asks about starting dinner for everyone and Shionne and Rinwell say they'll take care of it. Then she checks on laundry and Alphen and Law say they've got it covered. Thus, she has nothing to do but join Dohalim by the fire, who serenades her with poetry. This is the type of setup that really makes romance click for me, where everyone else sees it and is in on it, trying to set them up.

Takes of Arise was so good The story did go a little bit into the weeds just a little bit but it came right back out. The cooking was pretty good the action the fighting in the game was great overall solid title the graphics pushed it over the edge. Plus one thing I found really great each character was fun to play ass yet had a unique fighting style that if you played with them you had to learn.
They could actually do a DLCO set of Contant where you had to separately play as each character for their own small adventure. I do believe they could also potentially make a sequel here. There is much more to explore in this world I’ll leave it at that so as not to spoil anything.

Loved this game so much, not only is it the best Jrpg in over 15 years for me, it's easily my Goty 2021.
Only played the essential Tales games and I am generally an YS fan first but Arise blew all YS games away INSTANTLY.
    Btw,
I was very happy to see Arise win and get the RPG of the year on the game awards, even if that show is totally a cooperate D sucking fest these days.
Grabbed the platinum without the XP boost, it wasn't easy, especially with those lvl 100 chain boss fights...

      @@SubFlow22 The trashy dialog,?
You know you can skip stuff right?
The daily banter in that game is very reminiscent of Japanese role playing games. Some is unnecessary and some is essential, the trick is to skip the ones that are unnecessary.

It is good you guys brought it up the DLC for this game you know where you can purchase an XP boost ACP boost or an item limit boost. The thing is the game does have some difficulty spikes where one of those boost or perhaps two of them really the first and the last could put you over the edge and make it much easier to get through the game. More XP can over level you so you can defeat enemies really easily. Items I never noticed it until I bought one of the DLC packs with the item boost there can be points when you start running out of gold to buy potions or potions in general because there’s no shop around while you’re in a dungeon and you’ve exhausted your supply. Now this could be prevented if you really set up your party the right way and you have to set up your heart the right way and then you can play the game properly with none of this DLC but you actually have to know what you’re doing. You really have to understand the character and trick Cassis especially when setting up healing arts to be on command or off command.

Yea i had problems to whit that. The mobs were ez af and boring and bosses sponges. I did not wanted to bother whit the terrible gear progression so i just gave me money and made it so mutch better. Gearing is really simple so… why not. Also this game would be better to play if they had the other system of setting up ur strategy. Like make ur main healer only focus on heals stay far away of enemies, try not to aggro and dodge better. Main dps or tank whatever. U had zero control except how they use ur items or heal. But i just not proudly cheated early in gold and perk points. Or u have fun on mobs and bosses sucks or fun bosses and ez boring mobs. Shame really. Its just a ok fun game but man they ruined it for me.

Finally just got to this game and finished it. As a long time Tales fan, I really enjoyed it from start to finish. I think it's my favorite since Symphonia, and that is very much a product of the time. It was a really enjoyable experience.
Vohlran is a very weird villain, but he wasn't terrible. He could have used more development, but I agree with Micah. Power for powers sake is interesting, but hos story makes no sense. Him faking being Renan doesn't make sense. Nobody knew who he was, but they made him a lord? It's weird.

Lol. How dare you assume I buy the swimsuit outfits only for the women!
But seriously, for fun, I liked to dress up the party per occasion. Snowy area? Give them winter clothes, Sunny day on a enemy yacht? Swimsuit outfits! It sometimes takes away from the serious cutscenes, but it still very fun.

I've played every tales from the PS3 and up and honestly enjoyed all of them even zesteria until it got to the 30-40 hour part since it was obviously padded to an extreme. Arise is probably one of my favorite games in my personal top 10. I had to mute the music for 80% of the game though because in standard Tales fashion, is always at an 11 and needs to calm the ef down.

Tales of Symphonia is still the best one for me. Vesperia is a close second to me. I’ve seen a couple people say that Arise wasn’t all that great, so I’m gonna check it out much later than usual.

Honestly thought for awhile that this might kick Symphonia off as my number one Tales Game, then I arrived in Rena...... Holy shit never again do I wanna slog through this pointless grey corridor. It got to the point where it almost made me quit the game because it was so boring and it even soured me on the ending. The ending isnt horrible, its completly fine but man was I in a bitter mode when I got there.

Tales of Arise is good but not great..
There's some things they make me thinking going to 3D has nerfed JRPGs..
    No overworld
    No epic scale..
The leveling up is so micro transactions focus..you can't grind up to high level.. because the same monsters give less exp with each level ..and go can't go to places who monster I way higher then you...so it encourages you to buy levels
Combat was good but not great...
The game was planet spanning but feels small..like just long hallways...
Makes me what to do a video on how 3D graphics has nerfed the epic scale of JRPGS

Kinda found it boring really. U fight the same enemies 24/7 Just reskins. The balance was bad, also the characters had just 1 personality and 1 reason to be together. The mage was the most boring of them and the guy kid stupid. Comedy was a weak point like not at all. Just mage shits on the guy and be offended all the time. Hearing the woman say over and over and over ( kinda all repeated the same bs in the dull conversations skits) of she only helps because it was beneficial to her and helps her cause. The only 1 that was interesting was the lord because of hes knowledge and background. And ur main guy kinda worked because of hes dementia but also lame. Just a guy that was social justifying everything. Like 90% of the… bright eyes? Forgot their names are bunch of racist nazi’s i mean all their lords except 1 were psychopaths that murder and use everything. They had a pathetic background u hear from the space station that did not showed who they were at all. Sort of cared for their own people? They murder their own people if they wanted looks like to me. Zero personality villains only thing they had go for that they are evil. I may have bias for Vesperia but those people had personality and grew. Carol there was a coward and had problems. But is n the end he was stil afraid sure but had courage from hes friends. Simple but worked. Here they mostly all stay the same except for the main thorny woman open up more. And u cant kil a psychopath whit hate? Wtf that bullshit she made a dam river of corpses laughing doing it. I see the point only that hate raging when fighting u make mistakes. But Comon they all deserve the hate beatings. I mean the guy ( awesomely) bashed hes father murderer face in. ( only awesome character had to die ofc) was fine? and he did not went CrAzy!?! Right? So why can lame mage not do the same. Its atleast satisfying to see bad people defeated brutally. Forgot the most lame soldier mother ever whit a bs excuse why she has a open back instead to nerd bait weebs. B u carry huge ass shield and mace just wear full plate god or give me a skin that do it. ( nope only nerd bait skins) also the progression is also not great imo. U get ur armor instead of buying, or craft whit parts or other armor etc. Nope just loot them and craft ONLY ur weapons. Also no grade? No NG+? U can play the harderst mode just in new game ( not +) while i had a reason to be strong in vesperia and get the cool skils artes etc for + and hardest mode since that was actually hard. Here only bosses were pretty bs to deal whit. Tho i do say the… emblems? Whatever idea was cool. Could whit .. alf? Give insane fire dmg so he just BURNS 😜 trough health if full charged. And ofc the perks taken. Dont know any other of them could do crazy dmg like him since he only have 1 really good fire type attack. Rest have I believe more then just fire. Story was fine really just simple but kinda felt rushed to me. Maybe its me but i missed the adventure feeling vesperia had and side missions. Other may hate it but i like the ghost ship ( tho F that patty god worst character ever) and also the slow start just chasing a thief. here its just side quest u have no reason to bother since u have a rebellion to do. No room for anything else in the main then kil lords and reskin enemies that are lazy different colours. Atleast try to let them look diffrent but same body move style. I stop rambling now XD o i forgot the ending sucked wanted to visit the dam planet but nope XD also again same boss… srly.

I feel like I was in a crazy small minority. But I genuinely did not enjoy the game. I didn't care for the story, and even the game felt like it was scaled so poorly, especially leading into those last couple of dungeons. I got the platinum because it was a fairly easy one but it felt like a chore the whole way through, especially on hard.
