    I know many women benefit from infrequent washing and no-poo methods. But I also think it’s important to know your own hair type and ancestry when it comes to taking care of your hair. Example: my Nordic ancestors were known to wash their hair weekly with lye soap that caused their hair to bleach overtime. Some of us really can’t get away with shampooing less than once a week or using no-poo methods no matter how many years we try to train it our hair. I had perfectly healthy hair before I switched to clay and herbal cleansers and those no-poo options eventually led to hair loss and a severely irritated/imbalanced scalp. A gentle, mostly natural shampoo and conditioner once a week works wonderfully for me. I was also able to grow and maintain hip length hair for many years while using regular drugstore shampoos and conditioners and washing twice a week when I was younger. It just goes to show that one size really doesn’t fit all!

      You have beautiful ancestry! And you make a great point! I've been looking into this as well being that I don't know if my hair type will support this way of washing.

      My hair is thick but the strands are fine, I’m like you and started having scalp issues and hair breakage and loss after a while with those methods. Now I was once a week at least, preferably every 3 days, and my scalp is happy and my hair is healthy and strong. It really is up to figuring out what’s best for your hair type. My bf can go a month without washing and still looks/feels great. I’m a little jealous

      I have very oily hair that has to be washed every day and in the summer sometimes twice a day if I’m going somewhere at night. I came across a method or routine of reducing the oiliness of your hair, therefore reducing the need to wash it every day. One part of the Steps is to rinse it with the coolest water that’s comfortable. Lukewarm water and just rinse out the dirt or oil. I use a little bit warmer water, but not hot because I wanted to strip some of the oils out. It got to wear I could comfortably wash my hair every day. I tried the no-poo products but they were just too oily. It was just like using conditioner with no shampoo. I don’t use conditioner at all or my hair will be oily in 10 to 12 hours. When my hair is a little longer, I will put a little bit on the ends or use in conditioner. I have noticed if I rinse my hair with white vinegar, then it seems to be less tangly. maybe it’s the same concept as using white vinegar as fabric softener, I don’t know

    Boar bristle brushing gives my hair a fresh clean look. Not to be gross but the brush picks up lint, oils,debris and hair that's ready to fall out. So you clean that out of your brush with a comb and wash the brush and let it air dry.

    • @IsaVarg
      @IsaVarg 22 дня назад +1

      Does it also keep the hair smelling neutral? One thing that's kept me from trying boar bristle brushing is the worry that it smells stronger than when I wash it.

    • @JariDawnchild
      @JariDawnchild 20 дней назад +1

      @@IsaVarg I washed my hair about once every two weeks and using a boar bristle brush a couple of times per day for several years, and my hair didn't have much if any smell (aside from smelling like shampoo for a couple of days after).
      Health issues (thyroid) popped up about 7-ish years ago and I had to change how I took care of my hair to keep up, though I'm hoping to be able to return to the much healthier way of doing my hair again soon. :)

    There are positives about historical practices and it is important to look to the past, however, most "common" people did not have bathrooms and indoor plumbing, not even until early this century in some countries, so other methods *had to be* found, whereas times are very different now compared to then. Which is what explains the difference between wet cleansing and dry cleansing quite well, IMO. That said, me and my father can go a week between washes, which we do. My mom, white, can go 2/3 months (3 months is stretching it). She has been to our family internist for it and he told her to wash as infrequent as she could handle as her scalp just did not need the suds that often. And oddly enough the sebum does not get in until it hits month 3. No joke. She is a true unicorn!

      Sulfate shampoo is dropping everyone hair out if not dropping it’s thinning out the hair that by the time we’re in our 40s. No matter the RACE our hair is balding in the front. Popular shampoo products companies are realizing that. And now changing to sulfate free shampoos. Too late though I don’t use them just conditioner or none t all

    My hair is longer and healthier from infrequent washing. I am experimenting with bar shampoo, but I will eventually make my own product. The boar bristle brushing is a massive eye opener. There is gunk and dust that needs cleaning out of the brush when I am about halfway through the brushing. There is no way shampoo would get rid of this. The ingredients in shampoo, conditioner, and other hair products destroy hair. Researching it is shocking. Btw, just in case you are going to try boar bristle brushing, it is not like a normal hair brush thats purpose is to get out knots. I learned from this woman to first detangle my (waist length) hair gently with my fingers. I then bought a wide tooth wooden comb and very gently use that. Then, I start brushing to draw the oils from my scalp to the ends. I made an oil that I am pleased with and add a drop or two to my hair. I am in the process of making a spray based on aloe vera. I will spray that lightly on my hair, but make sure it is completely dry before applying a little oil to keep the extra moisture in. Apparently, hair is 30% more fragile when wet. I recommend this womans channel if you want or have long hair.

    true! i never quite understood modern day’s expectations to shower every single day. doesn’t it just strip your scalp of its natural oils, either causing it to become super dry or overcompensate with excess oil production…?

    A good dry shampoo I use is a mix of starch with cinnamon and cocoa powder. You can find the ratios if you google it. I wash my hair once a week with sls free shampoo and use this dry shampoo when it's getting oily before the washing day. It works wonders!

    My grandma washed her hair once a week. She said she put a panty hose stocking on a brush and would brush her hair like that to get rid of buildup and oils. I wash my hair twice a week and it works for me but if I use gentle shampoos or cleansers that are mild no way. Back then people washed their hair with harsher shampoos so they could go longer as well as dry cleansing.

    I went through a phase of infrequent washing and my hair was indeed very long.
    This is because washing strips natural oils (sebum) from the hair and scalp.
    Now, I wash my hair about once per week and I replace the lost oils by oiling my hair a few times per week.
    Oil is great for hair growth, it’s popular in India.
    You have the right idea but it’s not worth having dirty hair. Just oil your hair after washing.

    There’s probably a very low probability that she will see this, but I have seen this woman on RUclips that uses an old art of saving her shed and making beautiful pieces of jewelry and hair ties. The hair ties are woven away that the hair itself becomes elastic and of course perfectly matches your own hair. Every time she brushes her hair or anything she takes out she lets the strands fall into a piece of paper and then stuff them in a box. It looks just like it, square Kleenex box only it’s just plain white and you can just shove the hair in. Some of the stuff she makes is incredible but I’m sure it’s tedious work even separating all the strands.

    Thank you for your reflections on hair care.
    I personally wash my hair every 1-2 months. I prefer to have my clean more often however my nomadic lifestyle allows only little washing.
    I have methods to maintain my hair to not look, feel or smell dirty or greasy.
    Coconut oil on the scalp then using a homemade dry shampoo at the roots and using a very nutritionally potent oil on my ends gets me thru my professional business nomadic lifestyle.
    I'm not sure if my hair is healthier for it, I commentore regarding the maintenance. We can be very versatile and not have to fit into society's standards.
    Thanks for sharing, best of luck!

    Can you mention more about how historical women combatted sweat? Obviously the historical aristocrats wouldn’t mind washing hair as little as once a month, since they most likely didn’t sweat much, possibly due to sitting around all day. But what about the workers who swear themselves in the kitchen or the fields?
    As an Indian, I’ve heard some natural haiwe washing menthols from my grandmother. Living in 45*C wether, there’s no way one wouldn’t wash themselves daily and hair once a week. Just standing in the kitchen makes your scalp and body sweaty within 15mins . Now imagine working out everyday and sweating like crazy.
    Personally, I’ve noticed that when I don’t work out, and the weather isn’t crazy hot, I can stretch my hair wash from 10-15 days easily, as I mostly stay indoors too. But if I do workout, I need to wash it atleast once a week. Since dirty scalp also aids to hairfall .
    Our only option is to be gentle, use gentle cleansers, not fumble hair to tangle them and break like crazy, and just do something like a rinse.

      If you look it up online, there are ratio charts for that kinda thing. For my hair oils, I do 3% EO, and the rest carrier oil. I think mountain rose herbs has a dilution chart. All you need to do is figure out how many fluid ounces of carrier oil you wanna use, then you can add the appropriate amount of drops of EO. I do a scalp oil prepoo treatment once a week, so I mix it all in 1 bottle. (I save a few old haircare/ skincare bottles, wash them and use em for diy haircare/skincare stuff).
      I also wanna try to wash less (this summer has been nuts so I've been washing 3x a week) but currently doing 2x a week. I used to wash once a week, but after I played sports, my bf said my hair was kinda stinky lol so I wash it more for him! I feel u on that haha
