- Filipino food is very diverse. From the street food in Manila, to the seafood on the coast, there's one food that wins the contest for most filipino of them all. When you travel Philippines, you see Lechon everywhere.
I had never had this Iconic Pinoy food yet, and while travelling Mindanao with the fighter boys, a unique opportunity came our way.
Becoming Filipino, Daniel Marsh, Finn Snow, and Bret Maverick and I were in Marihatag in Surigao del Sur. There was a little local festival happening and a lechon was going to be prepared, and if we wanted, we could slaughter the pig.
This immediately polarized the group. Killing animals for fun is wrong and immoral, no one wants to watch it, let alone do it.
But... Every time we choose to eat meat. A steak, a piece of fried chicken, a hotdog, an animal dies. Some of these animals live happy lives where they are free to roam, and others live horrible lives inside filthy cages. If we eat fast food, we promote this terrible way of treating life, if we eat lechon (or hunt) we promote the first way, the natural and free way. So then which is worse?
Either way, an animal lives and dies to feed another animal. If you choose to eat meat, shouldn't you understand this? Shouldn't you put the connection of a life to your choice? Bacon is not a vegetable, but it's treated that way when we buy it in the supermarket. Shouldn't we think about it differently?
These were all the questions ringing through my head, and this is why I chose to do it. To understand the consequences of eating meat, and to help guide my future decisions. The question I have for you is, what would you do?

Fearless & Far.. I agree with you man. Growing up I seen this done plenty of times and even helped in cleaning the pig and the inners. I think this why I respect food the way I am now due to these experiences. And very true, I know a lot of meat eaters but couldn't even stand watching the pigs head. How irony life is to some.. I know it's hard for you to do it, and you deserve great RESPECT for it. Only the brace ones actually face this..

Something you said in Kulas previous vlog that stuck with me, and I think fits with this experience...”It’s not about being fearless. It’s about feeling the fear, and walking fearlessly towards it. Knowing that if you feel that fluttering in your chest, you’re only becoming a better person”...It really stuck with me and how I’ll see further experiences. I’ve experienced it myself my first trip to the Philippines( I’m half Filipino/White) to visit my family in Pampanga and I was asked to kill and butcher a goat. I had that same feeling in my chest and I feel it made us better people. Not to say we’re better than anyone else, but better versions of ourselves. We grew a fonder appreciation for what we grew up not thinking much about. You’re awesome man. I loved this vlog.

At a young age, my dad taught me the same lesson.. he made me watch a pig being prepared for my graduation dinner. He taught me that I should always respect the food on the table because it costs a life.

for us the "pig cutting" was the time of the year when it got cold, the family go together and we processed a whole live pig. This was our method of preparing fat, ham, salami, sausage ettc for many montths afterwards. Never thoughtz of it as cruel thing since this is what we had adn we had to eat. Also it was very fun as a famiuly gathering, spiced witth morning drunkness. Oh and the youngest family member ( as soon as they can stand/walk) had to hold the pig's tttail while it was being killed as a symbol of the youngest can hold tthe biggest power and opportunite. Also back in the days no guns or electrocute, the biggest fam member had to "rodeo" the pig while it was bleeding out. Tthose MFs can be strong and hard to deal with.

If you eat meat, then you need to experience how it is to take a life. You will never take your meals for granted if you do so. When I killed my first chicken, it did not make me vegan but it made me respect the animal that gave up its life for my nourishment.

So true. I've killed multiple chickens back in my home province and it just made me appreciate the animals that provice us with meat even more. For sure, we didn't waste any parts, even the head and intestines which we grilled.

For all its worth, what you had experience was more “humane” . In the provinces, animals for food are kept and treated more humane, they roam freely, they are fed naturally. I have seen you tube videos here in the US where slaughter houses prepare pig, chicken or cows in a more brutal and insensitive ways, where employees make fun of them, kick them, throw or slam them before killing them the right way. It is better to know how your food was prepared wether it is meat or vege. I eat meat and I learned how to prep live chicken was when i was 13 or 14. I felt the same way like you, but like you said. “I have to do it.” I learned how to appreciate and be thankful and not to waste resources.

I had my first kill when i was 12 it was a chicken. And my mom’s rules are:
Prepare everything you need.
Don’t let any other animals witness the kill.
Be quick. Don’t let the animal suffer.
Use as much of it as possible.
Never waste food.
Appreciate life and thing that you have.

Same, but I was 6. The fun part tho is chasing the headless chicken. The #1 rule is that we can't eat unless we participate in the cooking. No part left unused (even the feathers are washed, dried and stuffed on the pillows). Last rule, no remains on the plate. 😥
I have my 1st kill when I was 12 and I make it quick execution but the prey is still alive for 10mins. I chopped the duck head by bolo knife but it doesn't dies easily

More than anything, I think we have to respect the fact that in countries like the Philippines, food is respected. Nothing (or little) is wasted as you have stated, since each part of the animal is prepared and eaten. While in America, food wastage is so common. You have a lot of food prepared and thrown away easily by people because everything is in excess (whether meat or even vegetables). So my issue is not so much the killing but the waste knowing there are millions of people dying due to hunger.

I grew up on a goat farm. We've killed and spit roasted goat before. I've watched my family gut deer they hunted. I don't think I could personally end a life at my own hand, but it's good to have the realization of where your food comes from. Being in a place where you get all your food at a grocery store really detatches you from reality. I don't have a problem as long as the animal lived a good life, was killed quickly and humanely, and as much of it was used as possible. If it were killing for sport or fun to watch it suffer I would be horrified. I'm glad you got the experience of knowing your food. With that said, was it delicious? Lol
I once asked my Father why he didn't hunt anymore, as I knew he had in younger days: His answer has stuck with me all my life "Because I don't have to." Sometimes we may have to kill things - but we should never want to or never enjoy the act of killing.

Much respect to you Mike! It takes courage to slaughter an animal. I think the more society learns about animals, the more people push others to be vegan/vegetarian. It's beneficial for the environment but a very hard transition for others who can't grow veggies in their region. But whether you're a meat eater or not, it's very important to know where food comes from. My grandpa had a farm and I've seen how animals were slaughtered. He hunted as a kid too and nothing was ever wasted. Seeing and hearing a pig die definitely changed me but I was more appreciative of the life that was taken to nourish another.

It’s ridiculous to think of the whole world being vegetarian, but i hope the more our world grows, and the more food options we have, we can start to get away from the mass processed options, and more into sustainable and healthier options for our planet ❤️
Fearless & Far thanks! i was vegan when I was a student but when I started working, I realized that being one isn't always practical when I'm out in the field lol. I think it's important to ask ourselves what our choice really means on a moral and practical level for the environment and animals. I doubt factory farming will ever go away as global consumption and population increases. It can be improved but meat consumption here in the US can't be sustainably adopted by the rest of the world even if management becomes efficient globally. But with the right education, people can eat less meat to be healthier and save our world at the same time.
Nothing is truly wasted in nature tho. Even if you didn't use or eat it something will.
Hi Mike! Pls don't feel bad about taking the life of a pig. We all know that the meat we eat almost everyday was killed by someone in a butcher factory or farm, it is just the circle of life. We produce the food and later on we consume the food & that's how you should look at it.

Powerful, emotional video. I totally agree with what you said, though. In Western culture, we tend to sanitize the idea of how our meat gets to us. We don't like to think about the fact that our burger or steak or bacon was once part of a living, breathing animal. But we should think about it. I've been borderline vegan for roughly a decade, but I absolutely get why you did it, and I'm not offended at all, and I can't judge you for it. I don't know if I could have done it, but then again, I bet you would have said the same thing before you were asked. Your actions fed a whole community, a community you seem to have formed a special bond with, and was the center of what looked like a wonderful celebration. Loved seeing you with the kids, by the way! So sorry I haven't become a patron yet...I will, I promise!

Yes but many dangerous things have happened in the past. But mainly in far west. The maguindanao massacre of Nov 2009. And more recently martial law and the fight against ISIS in the east. The West and North have more of a history of peace. I will be in Mainit/Surigao in February as well as Manila and Sohoton. Maybe Camiguin.
Andrew Wilson yeah andrew a lot of unfortunate event happens in the past and recently, but i think what mike wants other people to realize is that Mindanao in general is not a dangerous place. I, myself havent been to mindanao but my friends are mostly from mindanao and they are totally safe there. haha i can empathize while eating pork bbq and lechon. i respect where my food comes from and how it is prepared (from farm to table). i believe that is one aspect of practicing proper dominion over other living things on this earth....respect, care, and conservation.

Eating the meat is almost the same with killing it with your bare hands. I thought for a couple of seconds there that you won’t be able to do it but you’ve shown so much courage and really done it. I think compared to the other things that you’ve done here, this is probably the most uncomfortable one. You did great, Mike! I’m glad you’ve done it. The first time killing for food is tough. Imagine if you took care of that pig (or chicken) from birth? That's basically what agriculture is (in contrast to hunting and gathering).
when I was a kid. My cousins and I have a very special fat pet chicken which produces lots of eggs.
One day our uncles decide to kill it when we are all in school. we cry a lot. when they told us that the chicken that we are eating is our pet. we cant forget it until now we are 50's.
Nolsp I agree. My grandpa had a farm but after a few years he started to feel guilty that he got rid of all livestock and grew vegetables instead. He even stopped hunting and became vegetarian. He said he always felt guilty the way they stared into his eyes when they loaded then into the truck to be sent to the slaughter house.
We call pig intestines Chitlins' in Black American southern culture. New subbie by the way, and I'm OBSESSED!

Oh Mike. I just wanted to reach into the screen and give you a big hug. I totally get it. I've been there.....mind you mine were chickens and a duck but still. Last I had lechon with my fam, the brought the pig and it squealed. I think the squealing was what did I for me. I swear I became a vegetarian for about 15 min.....but then when I smelled that nice and delicious aroma, i was right back in the game. Lol. But having experienced that made me appreciate my food and made me aware of how precious the gift is. And hell yeah we use EVERY part of it as you experienced. It will be something that will stay with you for sure but I think it may have brought you to a higher state of awareness. I don't know you but I am proud of you. Cheers and take care.

Congrats Mik Mik, you have tranceded above the status quo and became that much closer to the inherent goodness of being human. Taking a life for food and appreciating the wealth of that life is one of the most forgotten truths in the world.

I respect how u fil mik2x.. I eat chicken for 33 years, but there was a time I was alone and I wanted to eat native chicken tinola from my own backyard raising. All of the time I think I'm a brave woman, but reality check, I couldn't cut the chickens neck, I prayed, my tears keep falling, it took me 3 hrs, past 2pm I haven't had lunch , that was the time I realized I can't take a life, so I ended up opening a canned sardines.. The feeling is real and u can't fake it, taking the very life of it is somehow unnecessary but our ancestors did it as long as it was a quick and a clean kill... Thank u for spreading positivity and love to our country, especially here in Mindanao.. Be safe sir Mike. I was going to comment earlier saying it's usually a shaky experience killing your first animal that you're going to cook and eat but Filipinos have done it since they were young so it's more natural for them. But 14:55 in made me proud saying "it may look gross but it's more gross to throw it away". I'm half Filipino and it makes me very happy to hear that. Well done.

This will either make you appreciate the lives of the animals we eat everyday or make you swear off eating meat entirely. We always have to be conscious of how and where we get the things we use everyday from the food we eat, the clothes we wear, the cars we drive, the phones we use. I literally cried (cuz it was moving) watching you go through the anxiety and experience of seeing a life be taken as sacrificial food for mankind. Being a filipina, who grew up in the province until i moved to Los Angeles at 10yo (35 yrs ago), was immune to it then. Now w/ everyone awakening to their true spiritual connection to all life even animals, which we all take for granted, will need to treat animals with respect even when we turn them into food. This is why it's always necessary & a must to be thankful/give grace to the animals on our table, so we don't forget the sacrifice these animals are about to bring into our being, which will continue to raise our vibrations to Unconditional love. Not everyone knows, but we are all heading/shifting into 5D earth. Yes, a new higher dimensions, depicted in the bible as the end of times, but it's not the apocalypse or anything bad. You're actually there already, ahead of everyone and probably don't know that you're already vibrating to higher frequency in 5D, as being connected to all things in life already, and already pursuing your life's mission as a light warrior, volunteer who came down here, just like Finn Snow (as I was guided to him follow him, now you just recently). I am Filipino turned Vegetarian almost 20 years ago. Vegetarianism was not brought or pushed to me, but it was by experiences of living in rural vs living in the city. In rural areas, where agriculture is the main livelihood, vegetables and fruits are the everyday foods. I can say that I eat more plant based food than meat in rural -- 95% plant based and 5% meat. When I move to the city or in Manila to study in college, most foods are meat especially pork. I have no choice but to eat what was available and it is taste good. And here what happened, after a few years of such meat eating habit, I started to feel losing strength in my body - I was a varsity player in basketball. If you are a player you can easily feel the changes in your body, your stamina, strength etc. I am easily tired and my jump start to diminish that I can't longer to dunk and it worsen overtime no matter what medicine issued to me by a doctor it has no effect until I loss my post as a part of basketball team. I become easily to ill and sick, that was the first time that ever happened to me. So I returned to my town to be cured and rest, my old routines of eating plant based foods came back. My body gains strength gradually and cured myself without taking any pharmaceutical issued drugs. That was a time I become curious about the food I ate that cured me. I started to dig about it deeply about the mystery of eating plant based food and I think it is worth to share with you. Believe me, I never get sick since I became 100% vegetarian. I never take any vitamins nor medicine and many always make mistake to guess my age 10 years younger. lol
Here one of the excerpt from one of the book I read during my research about vegetarianism that make a lot of sense to me because what it said was my personal experiences myself. This might change your perception about food you eat.
"Pythagoras’ contribution to western philosophy is immense. It is incalculable. For the first time he introduced vegetarianism to the West. The idea of vegetarianism is of immense value; it is based on great reverence for life.
The modern mind can understand it far better now we know that all forms of life are interrelated, interdependent. Man is not an island: man exists in an infinite web of millions of forms of life and existence. We exist in a chain, we are not separate. And to destroy other animals is not only ugly, unaesthetic, inhuman - it is also unscientific. We are destroying our own foundation.
Life exists as one organic unity. Man can exist only as part of this orchestra. Just think of man without birds and without animals and without fish - that life will be very boring; it will lose all complexity, variety, richness, color. The forests will be utterly empty, the cuckoo will not call, and the birds will not fly, and the water will look very sad without the fish.
Life in its infinite forms exists as one organic unity. We are part of it: the part should feel reverence for the whole. That is the idea of vegetarianism. It simply means: don’t destroy life. It simply means: life is God - avoid destroying it, otherwise you will be destroying the very ecology. And it has something very scientific behind it. It was not an accident that all the religions that were born in India are basically vegetarian, and all the religions that were born outside India are non-vegetarian. But the highest peaks of religious consciousness were known in India and nowhere else.
Vegetarianism functioned as a purification. When you eat animals you are more under the law of necessity. You are heavy, you gravitate more towards the earth. When you are a vegetarian you are light and you are more under the law of grace, under the law of power, and you start gravitating towards the sky. Your food is not just food: it is you. What you eat, you become. If you eat something which is fundamentally based on murder, on violence, you cannot rise above the law of necessity. You will remain more or less an animal. The human is born when you start moving above the animals, when you start doing something to yourself which no animal can do.
Vegetarianism is a conscious effort, a deliberate effort, to get out of the heaviness that keeps you tethered to the earth so that you can fly - so that the flight from the alone to the alone becomes possible.
The lighter the food, the deeper goes the meditation. The grosser the food. then meditation becomes more and more difficult. I am not saying that meditation is impossible for a non-vegetarian - it is not impossible, but it is unnecessarily difficult.
It is like a man who is going to climb a mountain, and he goes on carrying many rocks. It is possible that even when you are carrying rocks you may reach to the mountain peak, but it creates unnecessary trouble. You could have thrown those rocks, you could have unburdened yourself, and the climb would have been easier, far more pleasant.
The intelligent person will not carry rocks when he is going to the mountain, will not carry anything unnecessary. And the higher he moves, the lighter and lighter he will become. Even if he is carrying something, he will drop it.
When Edmund Hillary and Tenzing reached Everest for the first time, they had to drop everything on the way - because the higher they moved, the more difficult it was to carry anything. Even very essential things were dropped. Just to carry yourself is more than enough.
Vegetarianism is of immense help. It changes your chemistry. When you eat and live on animals.... The first thing: whenever an animal is killed the animal is angry, afraid - naturally. When you kill an animal... just think of yourself being killed. What will be the state of your consciousness? What will be your psychology? All kinds of poisons will be released in your body, because when you are angry a certain kind of poison is released into your blood. When you are afraid, again a certain other kind of poison is released into your blood. And when you are being killed, that is the utmost in fear, anger. All the glands in your body release all their poison.
And man goes on living on that poisoned meat. If it keeps you angry, violent, aggressive, it is not strange; it is natural. Whenever you live on killing, you don’t have any respect for life; you are inimical to life. If you destroy Picasso’s paintings, you cannot be very respectful towards Picasso - it is impossible. And the very idea that just for food, just for taste, you can destroy life, is so ugly. It is impossible to believe that man goes on doing it.
Pythagoras was the first to introduce vegetarianism to the West. It is of profound depth for man to learn how to live in friendship with nature, in friendship with creatures. That becomes the foundation. And only on that foundation can you base your prayer, your meditativeness. You can watch it in yourself: when you eat meat, meditation will be found to be more and more difficult. It is an unavoidable fact that if you want to meditate, if you want to become thoughtless, if you want to become light - so light that the earth cannot pull you downwards, so light that you start levitating, so light that the sky becomes available to you - then you have to move from nonvegetarian conditioning to the freedom of vegetarianism.
Vegetarianism has nothing to do with religion: it is something basically scientific. It has nothing to do with morality, but it has much to do with aesthetics. It is unbelievable that a man of sensitivity, awareness, understanding, love, can eat meat. And if he can eat meat then something is missing he is still unconscious somewhere of what he is doing, unconscious of the implications of his acts. But Pythagoras was not heard, not believed - on the contrary, he was ridiculed, persecuted. And he had brought one of the greatest treasures from the East to the West. He had brought a great experiment - if he had been heard, the West would have been a totally different world.
The problem that has arisen today, that we have destroyed nature, would never have arisen. If Pythagoras had become the foundation for the Western consciousness, there would not have been these great World Wars. He would have changed the whole course of history. He tried hard, he did whatsoever he could - it is not his fault. But people are blind, people are deaf; they can’t hear a thing, they can’t understand a thing. And they are not ready to change their habits.
People live in their habits, mechanically they live. And he had brought a message of becoming aware. Great meditative energy would have been released in the West. It would have become impossible to produce Adolf Hitlers and Mussolinis and Stalins. It would have been a totally different world. But still the same old habit persists.
We cannot change human consciousness unless we start by changing the human body. When you eat meat you are absorbing the animal in you - and the animal has to be transcended. If you really want to go higher and higher, if you really want to go to the sunlit peaks of your consciousness, then you will have to change in every possible way. You will have to look all around your life.
You will have to observe each small habit in detail - because sometimes a very small thing can change your whole life. Sometimes it may be a very simple thing, and it can change your life so totally that it looks almost unbelievable.
Try vegetarianism and you will be surprised: meditation becomes far easier. Love becomes more subtle, loses its grossness - becomes more sensitive but less sensuous, becomes more prayerful and less sexual. And your body also starts taking on a different vibe. You become more graceful, softer, more feminine, less aggressive, more receptive.
Vegetarianism is an alchemical change in you. It creates the space in which the baser metal can be transformed into gold."

I don’t eat meat too, I live there somewhere in mindanao,nearby to where u guys right now. And every time I went home my siblings make katay the pig or chicken which I appreciate it ,the effort but I don’t eat it coz I feel like I’m eating human flesh if I ate any form of animals meat. I even told my fam not to eat so much meat. I told them instead to eat more on seafoods and veggies for a more healthy living.😊

It is not up to us whether to agree or disagree with what you did, it was your learning experience. The action connects you more to the food, because pork chops, bacons and hams don't exist as they are in nature, you have to "harvest" them and process them.
I know it's easy to eat but hard to watch how your food got slaughtered before it was served to you.

Well our grandparents and before had to do it. On some level I wish we still were self sustaining like those people. It seems much more freeing and happy than being chained to a system of crazy bureaucracy red tape! I’m sure those people can be dangerous if bad people come upon them. Hey Mike, I live in Toronto for almost 13 years and never missed Filipino foods. We can actually buy them in Filipino or Chinese stores in the city like those pig intestines. However, as a true-blooded Filipino, nothing is better than the real food in my homeland. I miss the Philippines very much and will be in my heart forever. 😘💙❤️🇵🇭

I'm 56, my father's generation was the last that raised their own chickens, cows, and pigs and slaughtered them on the farm, dressed them out and prepared them for food. I think that people have become disconnected from the natural order of survival. I've never done what you've just done and respect you for doing it. I wish I could meet you some day Mike.
