- In this Philippines travel vlog, we explore Basilan Mindanao with Kulas and Kumar of Becoming Filipino. This small island has had a lot of trouble in the past. Muslim extremist groups have damaged its people and its reputation. As a foreigner in the Philippines, everyone told me to stay away from the south. Mindanao was "dangerous" and "no one should go", is what I was told by both filipinos and foreign travelers. After the Mindanao roadtrip with the Fighterboys, I would have to disagree. Love and generosity is what we experienced, an appreciation from the people that I have rarely felt while travelling the world. We met the governor of ARMM, our local contact (always have a local contact) and spent 4 days here. While I wouldn't recommend travelling here on your first day in the Philippines,

Can't believe a foreigner is making us Filipinos feel safe to go to Basilan. Most of us are prejudiced and scared of Mindanao as a whole, and Basilan is a different level of fear and prejudice. Thanks for showing us and the rest of the world it's ok. Btw, seaweeds and kinilaw with fresh grilled fish and three plates of rice - always the best

I've been to Basilan way back 2017. Got a chance to see the beautiful scenery of Malamawi White Beach. Getting there takes a lot of precautions. But it was a great adventure indeed. I hope that someday I can get there again. InshaAllah

I have not gone back to Basilan since I was assigned there as part of the fighting forces. I was assigned there at a time when Basilan was described as "like hell on earth". But even then I have learned to shut out the negative and divert my attention on how beautiful that province is. I have lost friends there during that time, but I have also made a ton of new friends. I learned to see the beauty and the peace of the province in spite of the chaos and mayhem that went around during that time. I loved our r&r's in Maluso, and when I was there I learned to shut out the negative and zoom in on the fact that if we took out the chaos from the equation, Basilan was just another beautiful place. I am sure to go back soon... :-)

Most Filipinos are oblivious to the heartbreaking but amazing things that you guys go through to help a community that badly needs it. You're back! It's been a while, man! I absolutely LOVE vlogs like this. I think videos like this are so important because it's so easy to judge an entire place, an entire people, an entire religion, etc. based on the actions of a few. It happens far too often, and it shouldn't. As someone who lives in Chicago, which also has a bad reputation, I kind of feel like I can relate in a way. Everything I've seen from your Mindanao series, Kulas' channel, and the rest of the Fighter Boys' travels have showcased nothing but a beautiful place that may not be perfect but is still filled with kind, warm people with big hearts and heartwarming stories. And that, to me, is far more important than sweeping generalizations about a place and its people. Love the awesome moments of you chatting with the people there, and the food looks delicious! Although I'm pretty sure I would have freaked out a bit if I'd nearly run into that spider. 😂 Outstanding vlog, Mike. This is just one of many reasons why you're one of the best on RUclips. I think the local dialect in Zamboanga is called Chabacano - or what is referred to as broken Spanish (?). Anybody here who can validate and confirm? P. S. I don't like spiders and for some weird reason, the huge ones are almost always found in the bathrooms here in the 🇵🇭! Beats me! 🙄

Yes it is Chabacano although I grew up in Zamboanga del Norte I never learned that dialect.

Haven't finished watching the video yet but I just want to say thank you for challenging the stigma that surrounds the Philippines especially this place, not just for foreign tourists but for us local tourists as well. I don't know if it's just my circle but I know no one who has ever been or is planning to visit Basilan for tourism purposes because of the risks. Big props to you and your crew for educating EVERYONE. I'm glad y'all had fun and were safe. 🙏
We hope that this series will start the idea what tourism can begin here at some point. Maybe not yet, but soon!
Mike you made me cry. I don't know why. I was born, raised and now in my senior year here in Manila. Thank you for appreciating and loving the filipino people. In my younger years I worked as a nurse in the biggest Military Hosp here in Manila and watching you made me remember the young soldiers, (ages 19-24) losing their arms, legs, sight and.... family😢 for the love of our country. So much respect for you and your works. I’m from Cagayan de Oro, Mindanao but haven’t been to Basilan or even Zamboanga. Hopefully with your posts, Filipinos will try to visit this area. I’m based now in Chicago, USA but I would say it’s more dangerous here.

I've never heard of Basilan. Pretty intense they gave you a truck full of security but it looks like a really cool place to visit. My Philippines bucket list is getting longer all the time.
Don't do it bro, I'm a Filipino, and I'm telling you it's not worth the risk.
One piece of advice... DONT
I'm filipina but do not travel Basilan, no. unless you have local contact like they ( fighterboys) obviously had. safety first.
Unless you're traveling with a full security detail don't. A white person traveling alone in this region is a huge target and word travels fast. This blog might give you a false sense of security in visiting Basilan. Don't be fooled. Basilan is still a dangerous place.
Dave On Arrival they didn't give them nothing.. they had to pay for that security. And it's mandatory. If you want to visit the island of course only the fat cats get the cash. The soldiers don't get squat.. plus you have to feed all those bellies. The whole time they're with you.

Yes, I'm from Zamboanga Sibugay, and I lived Zamboanga City for long years. Wala gyud nako baliha kon duna bay gubot sa among lugar. Friends namo ang tanan bisan nagkalain lain ang culture and tribes.
great adventure with kulas & kumar, i had no idea basilan is a very lovely place... it's a paradise..
local Filipino here.. don't worry I know better..Basilan, Tawi tawi and Sulu are three beautiful islands tainted by these extremists and the international media...but if you would scratch the surface, I just read somewhere that even a pinay female solo traveller can travel safely.
edit: you should check out turtle islands in tawi tawi!!...its so surreal!!!
