  • The GO Berkey Water Filter Kit is a good option for backpacking, bug out bag (BOB) or really any situation. The GO Berkey Water Filter Kit filters very well as it uses the vaunted Black Berkey Water Filter (Everything it filters is below). As mentioned in the video, GO Berkey Water Filter Kit has some things that could be changed to get that 100% pure solution like the Sport Berkey. The Sport Berkey has a 100% unable to contaminate solution, as the lid closes on the place where you can either squirt the water out or drink out of. The GO Berkey Water Filter Kit will do about 1 gallon an hour of purified water, which is admirable for a gravity system. Made of 304 Stainless Steel, the GO Berkey Water Filter Kit will last a very long time, if not forever if you take care of it. Berz Rating: 85/100

The nipple is for the fluoride filter. If you are not going to use it, you can cut the extra thread off so there is nothing sticking off. I added 18” of small hose to the tip and added a drip loop in it to make sure unfiltered water dose not get in my cup. A little more complicated but when the water is very bad, it is much safer.

👍I’m with you 100% when it comes to sanitation, cross contamination & germs. If anyone has ever suffered from contamination or e-coli or food poisoning as I have...you’d truly know & understand the seriousness. 😔

Good review! Thanks for posting this, I'll keep that in mind when out on the trail with the Berky.

They can make a metal cap to cover the piece sticking out

All they need to do is put a cup over the end with the quote nipple. It could be an accessory cup that you drink your water from. Quite simple solution

i feel like 1 solution to prevent the nipple from breaking off would be to include a third piece that would look like a cap that would fit over the top during use and during storage it would fit over the nipple and be just long enough so the lip would sit on that raised up section on the outside and leave a small amount of space over the nipple. It would add a bit of weight but it would be a metal can when in storage mode basically.

One thing that stands out in my mind from experience traveling with Berkey black filters is that you have to prime them. You can do that with the sports bottle, but the filter takes in a lot of water when primed. That water slowly leaks out over time when the filter is just sitting there, and quite quickly wit the filter getting shaken. Basically, you're hauling around a water container you can't easily drain that will probably leak out and soak everything else in your pack.

With all the concerning points you raised; I think the Travel sized Berkey water filter system works best as a base camp/HQ tent option on a stable surface like a folding table or bench. This "GO" variant seems to open to compromise from inexperienced users fumbling with it, spilling dirty water down the sides and being in a field camp, it's going to have to sit on some rocks or on the ground and it might tip over easily.

I almost bought this system about an hour before posting this comment, but opted to just get the Berkey Sport Bottle instead; now I'm glad I did. The option to boil water aside, I think Berkey might've been better served just coming out with a larger capacity version of the sport bottle, or even an inline adapter for a hydration pack rather than this product.

Good review. Filter should be braced inside top canister so no wobble. Top cannister should go outside bottom cannister lip so no contamination. Should modify lid to protect nipple for travel.

When it's in the "storage mode" doesn't the contaminated portion of the filter sit inside the clean portion? This thing seems like it would be impossible to avoid keeping dirty water out of the clean water container one way or another.

You also dont ever need to replace the filter. They dont tell you this but all you have to do is clean it with a scotchbrite pad. I have had my same filters for years and i only replace the fluoride filters. When the flow gets slow i just clean them off in the sink.

The water from the filter is never going to be sterile, no matter what you think. This is filtration system not sterilization system... few bacteries won't hurt you.. they are all around you - even in your mouth. So worrying about some contamination around the bottle is pointless here.

How they could improve the design is shorten the stem length on the filter; it sticks out too far as you said. Once shortened just past the wing nut by no more than 1/4 inch, it would not be in as much danger of being broken off. Another thing they could do which would really help is to make the diameter of the stem of the filter larger to take the stress off of the stem, while the hole size in the stem could remain the same. Of course now the holes would have to be bigger in the top berkey can to fit the new size filter stem. So (shortening) the stem (only) would be the least cost for improvement.
