Excellent review sootch. I have been using the big Berkey for as long as I can remember. I also use the katadyn hiker and the small ceramic pocket filter. This looks like a great product and is really priced right. Keep up the good work.

the LifeStraw weighs 2 oz, and filter 1000 liters (far more than the berkey). It also meets EPA standards for removal of bacteria and protozoa (crypto and giardia), only $20.
U r correct. The Berkey can transport and store the water for later use. If one is truly in areas where water isn’t everywhere I feel carrying both would be beneficial.

Used these all over the US and Mexico, keep them stashed everywhere, Vehicles, ATV, backpack, even a couple in my house as backup to my Big Berkey filter, Have not been ill one time so if these aren't the best, they are good enough for me. PS,,,and I have filtered some nasty stinking swamp water!

I also think that these kind of filter systems are inferior to a mini hand pump like a katadyn, but sure better than nothing. (just find these are really hard to suck the water out of sometimes)

Nice review Sootch. I really dig any product that combines more than 1 use into a small package, as this seems to do. However I do wonder what you meant by "healthier than a nalgene"...Were comparing the filter-equipped Berkey to just dipping a nalgene bottle into suspect water?.. is there something about nalgene bottles I missed? I use a katadyn and my nalgene bottles now..Just curious.
Either way, one of these will be added to my setup ..thanks for bringing it to my attention.
I live in the city and I hike the bayou. will it work in that water. i'm more than sure it has everything you don't want in your water.

Just between me and you, I observe your mountainous terrain, the rhodo's, rocks, etc. and figure you must live up in the corner somewhere close to Traveler's Rest, hwy 11... I may be off but not too far if you drive to Asheville or Charlotte. That's a beautiful area friend. I paddle the Chattooga and have travelled those back roads cutting through from Hendersonville, etc. down to North Ga. The Green River is a sweet area too. I'm not too far up the road but I'm envious of where you live.

What you want to filter out from stream water are things like Giardia. Does it filter out giardia?
I have the sawyer and the life straw. I'm waiting for this one to arrive in the mail. Its going for $17 bucks on amazon. The reason I never purchased it in the past is because there is not a lot of info about it. Anyways I learned about it a little more on here so thanks

This is a product I really like. Question, Once you clean the filter, can you store it in a backpack or for emergeny? How would the Berkey compare with the hand pump purifier? Yes, SC in a beautiful state , wonderful culture and bitchen seafood. Next time I down there. I'm hiking the Palmetto trail.

u have any suggestions for survival type solar related tools, equipment or neat gadgets?
I know this is old know and probably there are newer versions but you mentioned about certain types of bacteria you need to put in chlorine, but how would you know the water had that bacteria unless you put the chlorine in all the time, which kinda defeats the object of trying to clean your water.
Thanks for the vid. I use this bottle for traveling and have used it personally when I was taking a vacation to the philippine islands - it proved to be useful. I had one problem when I first purchased the bottle - no water would come out of the straw when trying to squeeze or drink from it! I have read a few reviews with the same issue, and made a video to fix it. Type in berkey sport fix or visit my page.
Once the filter is used (aka cycled 2 times) how long will the filter last with no use? Most normal filters only last for 6 months once they have been used once.

One thing I cannot get my head around is water filter bottles. There's supposed to be these ones designed by NASA that are the be all and end all (or is that just sales talk?). If I get a UK or European bottle will I be able to get replacement filters in North America? If I get a North American bottle will I get stung on the shipping for new filters in Europe (and vice versa)? Which ones really are the most effective? You really don't know.
During your commercial you said the plastic that the bottle was made from was healthier than that of a nalgene, I use nalgene bottles and want to know whats unhealthy about them.....if its unhealthy then I want to switch to something healthier......could you let me know why ....thanks sootch
Does the plastic container contain any of Phthalates? The plastic bottled water people buy at the store contain these endocrine altering, cancer causing phthalates that they have no idea that they're poisoning themselves. Great innovative product you have still.
sootch I just got my berkeys. does the lids leak on yours by the drink straw area when tipped or squezzed. mine does they maybe broke

i have one of these and I’m glad I do especially since I just found out that we have been under a water boil for over a week now and our pathetic town leaders haven’t gotten around to announcing or posting any kind of warning,we just heard about it through word of mouth a freaking whole week my family has been drinking contaminated water this is the last straw I,m looking into buying the Big Berkey or the Lifesaver Jerrycan

sootch00 there are some pretty amazing water bottles out there much more advance then this not that this a bad option but I think it would be cool if you went over some other water filtration devises and even just look at them for ur own use

I like the video. However, I went to their website and ordered five of the water bottles, on March 22. It is going on three weeks and I have not received anything. On their E-Bay site it states delivery in 6-10 days.
could you just keep the filter in the pack and save for when you may need it?

So I live in Arizona where water is an Essential to life. To make a long story short, I got stuck in my truck in sand and was desperate of water. If I were to get this filter would it work on dams? Great Vid, thanks.

I think the best thing to make water potable is Iodine tabs, or a little bleach. Filtration helps aswell.
Are all the plastic parts BPA free? You can have all the bullets in the world, if you dont have any clean water, your dead.!! great vid

It doesn't, fluoride is more difficult to filter out. A filter that is set for fluoride needs to be a slow flowing filter to be able to treat the fluoride and arsenic. Search for "PF-2 Arsenic and Fluoride Water Filters" on the bigberkeywaterfilters site.
If that bottle was made of metal you could use it as a distiller. I've made my own out of cocktail bottle and a piece of copper tube.

I ordered mine from Berkey, but the ordered was filled by H2ofilters. Price $19.99 and I ordered a spare filter for $ 12.00. Total $41.94 This may not be the guaranteed price. Check first. I later inquired about a Lifestraw from H20filters,not knowing they were a distributor for Berkey. I was contacted by Dan and I could not deal with a nicer person. He will be my go to guy for all my water needs. To me, trust is critical and I trust him completely. Hope this helps.
I got my berkey from Whalefox.com. They're a certified Berkey Dealer and offer free shipping with the lowest price on the internet. I'd suggest writing into them and talking to those guys. Super customer service. Go Berkey!

Great job a lot of people leave water purification out of BOBs because of the cost these are cheep compaired to portable filters
