    Mine used to leak a lot until I read a comment to give it one more extra tight twist when closing it, and that has helped a lot

    I just learned today that you can take off the straw from the top too, it's not attached to the drinking straw. It's a good idea to clean that little hole as well.

    Thanks--very helpful. As an operating room RN, I need to clarify that "sanitize" is what you are doing . To "sterilize," a more specific process would need to be used. I agree that sanitizing is what is needed for this product :) This information is what I needed!

    Thanks for the great vid. I have a Berkey travel and a Sport Berkey, yet still didn't get my sport Berkey filter dry enough before storage. Very useful vid and will save me from a moldy filter in storage. Thanks again.

    Just keep it in the frig with water in it with a tsp of hydro peroxide, been doing this for ten years without any of these issue, use this sport filter for all water, 24/7, town water, well water, oh! let's not forget the underground polluted plumes water especially if you live near and armed force base or base camp, use it for store bought water from what I'm hearing the store bought water are selling us town water that being filter through a system, Yup!! figure that one out.

    i was using mine daily for just over a year until i noticed white stuff on the filter where it's exposed near the bottom. it doesn't look like mold... more like mineral deposits. hmmm... i dunno what to do.

    • @GreenLivingOffGrid
      @GreenLivingOffGrid  2 года назад +1

      Yes, I've had mineral deposits show up on come of my things, although not on this filter because I don't use mine as much as you do. But I would say that calcium deposits are likely the cause of the white flaky type hard mineral stuff you may be finding at the bottom of your bottle or filter. These types of deposits are most prevalent when you're using hard water, like creeks or well water. I had a well for a long time and saw that stuff all the time on my non-filtered water bowels, like the horse tanks where the water came straight from the well and not from the house filter. If that is what it is, it won't hurt you.

    Really good review but I don't understand why you would wait two months before you reuse your bottle shouldn't you be using it every day for everyday water?

    • @GreenLivingOffGrid
      @GreenLivingOffGrid  4 года назад +4

      I live on a well with very good water so I don't need to use it except when I'm hiking so that's why it took 2 months before I needed it again.

    Hello,
    I buy next summer the Berkey Sport for trekking, it works very well. I stored it, and never used during this year. Next week I have another trek, should I replace the filter ? Another point, I discover a small part of mold in the bottom of the bottle, so I clean with 50/50 of 3% Hydrogen Peroxyd and water. But the mold is still here, do you have a method to remove it. Thanks.

    • @GreenLivingOffGrid
      @GreenLivingOffGrid  4 года назад +2

      I recommend you purchase a new bottle and filter. Mold is very hard to get out of plastic bottles and it's simply not safe if you have mold around the filter. There is no way to easily tell if the filter has been affected by the mold in the bottle, so I recommend you replace both the bottle and filter and clean and dry the new bottle the way I show you in this video and store it in a cool dry area next time. I have been storing my replacement bottle and filter in a dry area after cleaning it and drying it the way I show in this video and it's been fine, even a year later. So try cleaning your new bottle and drying it out next time you use it and you'll probably be good.

    Very good video, thank you :) I have been letting my Sport Berkey air dry with the filter removed from the interior of the bottle and attached only to the straw for a week now. I just removed the straw from the filter once I watched your video. Do I still need to flush the filter itself now? I had used the Sport Berkey for 6 days before separating it to dry. Also, how do you keep track of how many times you have filled up the sport bottle to know when you have to replace the filter?

    • @GreenLivingOffGrid
      @GreenLivingOffGrid  4 года назад +3

      I usually only use mine when I'm hiking longer than what a simple 20oz water bottle will keep me. So I haven't used it enough to need to replace the filter. I would guess that you would be able to tell just by the way the water tastes if it is needing to be replaced. As far as it only being 6 days since you last used it, I would think a simple air flush of the filter would show you if there is still water in it because if it was retaining water, you would see the drops coming out the end of the filter. If there are no drops then my guess is you're probably fine. I just always do this process since my first attempt at air drying didn't work out well so I now always air flush the filter and then pull it off the straw to ensure it dries completely for my next use. Thank you for your comment.

    Is there anything I should clean the filter itself with?

    • @GreenLivingOffGrid
      @GreenLivingOffGrid  Год назад +1

      I'm not aware of any product that Berkey recommends to "clean" or "sanitize" the filter. Some have suggested peroxide but I don't know if that works or not. It may not hurt to try. I use mine so sparingly that if I just wash the bottle itself, straw and cap (not filter) in dish soap, flush out the filter and then use this system to blow out the filter, it seems to stay clean well enough for my occasional uses, but then I do live in a dry area so it doesn't get much humidity to build anything up over time. I hope this helps.

    I also discovered white mould on the black filter.....after I had the sport Berkley stored for about a year. I only used the bottle for two weeks then stored it away for next time. Is the filter no good now or can it be cleaned....please advise.

      Just to add another twist to this story I think I have the old Berkey sport bottle a new one has come out which has a unique replacement filter which won't fit my old sport bottle.....looks like I'll have to buy a brand new unit .....ahhhh.

    • @GreenLivingOffGrid
      @GreenLivingOffGrid  4 года назад +1

      @@kamranmohammad3243 Yes, I didn't trust mine once I found the mold. Since I think bleach could compromise the filter, I ended up just tossing the filter unit and using my backup Berkey I had purchased at the same time. I have since had good results with blowing the unit out and leaving it out to try for an additional week or two. I live in a relatively low humidity area too which I'm sure helps with drying the filters. I hope you have better luck with your new model. I found that they have changed the sizes so if I lose this 2nd one, I'll have to repurchase the new model like you are doing.

    • @GreenLivingOffGrid
      @GreenLivingOffGrid  4 года назад +1

      @@kamranmohammad3243 I do believe the straw can be removed but I haven't tried and I wouldn't mess with it if your unit has mold. It almost costs as much to repurchase the whole bottle than just the filter anyway.

    I think mine is broken no water coming thru the straw

    • @GreenLivingOffGrid
      @GreenLivingOffGrid  2 года назад +1

      Is it new? You may need to squeeze your bottle or suck on it pretty hard to get water through it the first time. It can also help to soak your filter first by flushing it with water from your faucet before you try to run water through it in your bottle.

    • @meegy2

      If it's old, you might just need a new filter

  • @Dm-ih8hl

    Don't take water from the surface, deep water is cleaner and your filter will last longer.
