    This is exactly what I was looking for to improve my Berkey Sport. Thank you!

    Nice. additional reason to invest in a Berkey GO Filter. I always wondered about the threading on the Bottle. Thank you for confirming.

    I read to never touch the tip of the straw (Berkey or Sawyer) with your fingers because you can get sick from bacteria still that way so just be cognizant of that fact. Great video!

    I live in a hurricane prone area so I read Berkey is best for that as far as what is filtered out. I have a rain barrel that I would drink out of with my filters during a hurricane which is a lot cleaner water that street water. As long as the street water does not flood my rain barrel then I'm good. I bought the Platypus and Nalgene bottle so thanks.

    What you described (using the berkley as a straw in any cup) you can also do with the sawyer ;)

    Great review! But when you said the Berkey was the better filter, it raised alarm bells so I dug a lot deeper.
    Berkey measures their pore size differently than Sawyer, MSR and others so it's tough to compare them. Berkey themselves refused to comment on this and got pretty evasive when I asked them. I had to do some conversions and the pore size is 0.024 to 0.028 microns, but they refused to specify if that was absolute pore size either.
    At least Sawyer is honest - their Mini filter has a 0.1 micron absolute pore size.
    Plus, the Sawyer Mini has a 100,000 US gallon guarantee and can be backflushed. The Berkey can filter 25 gallons before replacement and that's not even comparable to the backpacking filters out there.
    So with that in minds, plus the cold response I got from Berkey themselves, I think I'll be sticking with my Sawyer. If the mylar bags are a problem I carry a couple of other bags, and even a pop bottle will work (which I empty on the car trip anyway so it's ready).

      You make some valid points. In my response to the gentleman's question, I assumed he was speaking about which one was superior in taste so my response was purely subjective in that regard.

    • @AlbertaBushcrafter
      @AlbertaBushcrafter 9 лет назад

      OK - that makes more sense, as the Berkey has some additional elements (like a carbon element) that adsorbs chemicals and reduces bad tastes as well. There isn't one for the Sawyer but if you don't mind the weight there are other manufacturers that make these - even a Brita water filter can be used, though there are better options.

      @@AlbertaBushcrafter Do you think it would make sense to use the Berkey and Sawyer filters by attaching them together?

    • @AlbertaBushcrafter
      @AlbertaBushcrafter 6 лет назад

      @@al70127 I can't see how it would hurt, though it may reduce the flow rate. Start with the Nalgene soft bottle (which I also like a lot), with the Berkey filter, inside, then add the Sawyer, and you've got a good 2-stage filter. And the Nalgene would be way more rugged than the 1 litre pop bottle I'm currently using.

      @@AlbertaBushcrafter Thanks. Do you happen to know what the Berkey filters out that the Sawyer doesn't and vice versa? I've been asking around but no one seems to have an answer. Have you also looked into using the Sawyer point zero 2 which is rated at .02 microns?

    Thanks for the review. I have both of these filters and am getting ready to review the Berkey Sport Bottle. Great idea with your Mods. How is the bottle and filter holding up? I always find it difficult to figure out when to change out the filter on the Berkey.

      Thanks, my friend. The mods work very well, except I made the mistake of leaving the Berkey filter in the car overnight after using it and it froze. Nothing to do at that point other than replace it. My negligence.

      Ouch. I have not seen freezing temps in 17 years. Here is Ft Lauderdale, FL, that will not be a problem. I am going to post a vid on my bottle soon. I also own the Berkey Travel for home and emergency use. I even carry it while traveling in my Stealth Van.

    Can you indeed just use the Berkey filter and drink from the straw? I thought you need the bottle to "squeeze" the water through the filter into the straw. Also, some say that because of that pressure (and partly even without), the bottle tents to leak as there is residual water in the filter which is pulled upwards through the straw. Did this happen to you, too? Wish there was a good hack for that.

    • @weekendwanderer5514

      You can certainly drink from the straw, but it's not ideal. I have switched to the Grayl Purifier as I find it to be much more reliable and convenient to use.

    Hello. Thanks for the tip about the Berkey Sports Bottle cap fitting the Nalgene bottle. Is that Nalgene bottle considered to be the "Narrow Mouth" 32oz Nalgene Bottle?
