Kudos for actually keeping the whole filtering process in the final cut so you can actually see and hear what it's like to use each filter. Most videos have that cut out to please the algorythm.

My very first Sawyer filter was the Sawyer mini, after using it for a week it was determined that it was a counterfiet when I returned home. LUCKILY I never got sick. Now I use the Sawyer Squeeze along with the Cnoc Vecto 2 ltr. as an inline gravity system. Not a thru hiker here so I don't need to fiter in seconds, I can fiter 1 ltr. of water in less time than it took squeeze the water from the dirty water bottle. But Sawyer makes a very good filter in the Squeeze, just don't let it freeze.
@bernielamont825 I've actually been using the CNOC Vesica this year with my Sawyer Squeeze & Micro filters and have been really enjoying the combo. I find it to be efficient and like how compact it can get. Have a Vecto on my list to purchase for specific trips but haven't picked one up yet.

That sportcap hack is fantastic. I was going to reluctantly ditch the mini for a squeeze so I could also ditch the daft syringe. Now I don't have to. Thanks for saving me $$. Lesson learned: I need to play around with my kit more (and maybe drink more sports drinks!).

Thank you for not speeding up the water flow test in the final video. It saved me from buying a mini. It's one thing to see numbers, it's another thing to see it live. As a weekend warrior, I choose micro. A good compromise
Thanks for doing the comparison. Personally, I have moved away from using the dirty bottle in place of the bag, just because of how jacked up they get from squeezing them. Right now I use the evernew bags with a coupler to keep the bottle connected in line while filtering. (I’ve knocked over too many bottles while trying to just squirt the water in.)
roots No problem. Happy to! The bottles can get beat up a bit, but I've gotten 700-1,000 miles out of some of these bottles (or 1 to 2 months) before they need to be replaced. I haven't used Evernew bags yet, that might be something I'll check out in the future. Thanks for the info. I've found holding the bottle between my feet on the ground helps prevent any tipping. @@neobello6736 Thanks! Since the time I put this video out, l actually started using Platypus soft bottles with the Sawyer filter a couple years ago and have been very happy with them. On occasion, I may still use a different 28mm threaded bottle but the Platy bottles have become my go to. No issues with durability and they work really well. If something does happen to one, it’s nice to still have the option of a bottle I may pick up in town before getting back onto the trail.

If those can’t be found, a Smartwater sport cap will work too. I know the newer Sawyer Squeeze also has an updated cap if you are looking to purchase the filter.
Congrats!!! But I think that the right test to do is use different waters to each filter. If you use the same water many "dirty" was stopped in the first one (mini)
I'm new to this so thanks for the demonstration and comparison! One thing I noticed was I didn't think maybe it was a good idea to put your mouth on the 'dirty' water bottle opening to put air in it? Again, I know this was for demonstration purposes. Thanks!
@TheHoovercm Yes, though the video was for demonstration I have sometimes still had to blow air into a water bottle on trail. It might look like my mouth has contact with the bottle opening, but it is separated by my hand. I've never experienced any trouble out there if I need to do that. Hi Mat. Over time I have learned to trust the facts that you present. There are some other popular RUclipsrs that I do not fully trust. For picking up water from shallow sources to pour into a bottle, I use the bottom half of a cheap, thin water bottle from a store (or a trash can). You can crush the thin plastic flat and then open it up and reuse it hundreds of times.

Any thought to filling up your dirty water bottle and attaching the filter directly to the top of it? Then drink straight from the filter while attached? I'm wondering if that's a feasible way to go.
Hi man, thanks so much for the filter info video, just got back from a 5 day canoe trip in Ontario using aquatabs and was jealous of my friends gravity bladder filter from platypus. On the search for a better filter system than just chemical tablets, saw that sawyer makes a 1 gallon gravity fed system as well... more for Basecamp setup of course not thru-hiking but I am interested to hear if you have tried that system as well? I am torn between the squeeze and the 1 gallon kit that comes with the micro filter (slow I know). Anyways thanks for the video and I appreciate any thoughts/experience you share about this. Cheers !
Maybe you have already discovered this, but if not; try the CNOC 70floz bags for dirty water collection. These even work great with any Sawyer filter as a gravity system.
I personaljy use the Cnoc 2 L water bag. After spending up to an hour to collect and filter 2 Smartwater bottles hands stay a lot warmer in colder wearher. Just watch out that the filter doesn't freeze, I developed a case of the hershey squirts (not fun) not realizing the filter froze.

Thanks for watching Michelle. You got it! The cap I am using in this video is a Lifewater bottle cap. Smartwater works too. I've also seen that Sawyer updated the Squeeze to now come with its own type of sport cap. So if you are picking one up you might see that one.
Any idea on why they even make the mini and the micro? Ive never understood having the two types when they are so similar. Is there any advantages to one over the other that I am missing? Where did you get the sport cap?
Jay-Rus The mini and Squeeze used to be the originals. The Micro had only come out about a year or two ago in effort to have a similar flow rate of the Squeeze but with the weight of the mini. Some hikers still prefer the mini for various reasons. The cap is just a sport cap that came with a bottle of Life water I bought in the grocery store. It fits and works perfectly on the filter. Sawyer has also updated the Squeeze recently to come with its own sport style cap.
@dirtbagoutside I started using the Platypus Quickdraw when it was released back in 2021, and ended up using it that whole year and part of ‘22. I switched back to the original Sawyer Squeeze last summer and have been using it this entire year.
@matjobin gotcha. I have been using steripen ultra now for a few years. It decided last week to crap out when i testing it before my trip.. no display screen. I did have another one so I used it.. thankfully it happend at home before trip and not when i needed it most! Will probably go back to using my Befree or Sawyer Micro.. ugh.. anyway, thanks for response!

I’ll be switching to it once the temps are consistently below freezing and will be cleaning/storing the Squeeze for the winter. That’s a bummer that one konked on you. Good thing it happened when it did like you said, and that you had another. I had used the BeFree for a few years after it was first released too. Overall I still prefer the Sawyer Squeeze, but the other filters are good options. You got it, happy to help!
Random q. How do you secure your inreach mini to your shoulder strap without it flapping around on the carabiner? I noticed yours looks pretty secure while walking but doesnt look like its strapped down?
DD FF You are correct. I don't do anything special to secure it to my pack. I just use the carabiner that the InReach came with. Never have any trouble with it.

I was thinkingg about trying Micro and you helped me to decide to not try it:-) To other hikers: I have tested BeFee too... and Squeeze is better even that BeFree! What I like on the BeFree - it is the soft sillicone bottle, which I'm using with the Squeeze now (the bottle is soft, so it is very easy to filter water with it). If you go hiking in the freezing temperatures, I recommend Steripen Freedom (UV Light, built-in USB chargable battery inside). Happy hiking!

Both the Squeeze and BeFree are great filters out there!
@@matjobin BeFree is not reliable for me anymore, I the "pipes" were damaged during cleaning in the water (several pipes were broken). If you have the soft bottle, you can actually disassemble the blue filter and take one white part as a adapter for the Sawyer. (There you are able to see the adapter on this video ruclips.net/video/QttaPBYKLi4/видео.html) Have you tried Steripen Freedom (the USB version)? It is really great - better than AquaMira and boiling:) We have used it for more than 6 000 km and it is great, it is fast, kills viruses, no water taste changes:-) Happy hiking:)

please excuse my ignorance, very first time learning about water filtration and hiking..what is the point of the bag at all? Does it just provide a "double filtration" ?
Brandy Priddy It’s just a way to collect water and feed it through the filter. I prefer a bag over a dirty water bottle, I do not want to carry around a giant empty water bottle all day.
Nice comparison video. One point however...if you were actually doing this in the field and you put your lips around the bottle to blow it back into its shape you've just put contaminates directly into your mouth from the unfiltered side.
Thanks Eddy G. That is true, though in this video and when I am out in the field my lips never touch the bottle but my hand instead. I'm still able to get the bottle close to its original shape.
Hey man cool video. I did the same with the mini and micro but i added the hydro blu versa flow and the cnoc water bags. 2 liters in 1:18 great fast filter. Can be used as a gravity if you have 2 cnoc bags. Cant be used with smart bottles tho. Check them out and keep up the great work
It appears you tighten the filters too much, doing this can cause a hydro lock; air cannot get in. Notice, when you took the filter off the air is able to enter the bottle and inflate it.
Great video. Appreciate you taking the time to do the testing. Have been frustrated with the mini. Was about to get a micro, but your review was helpful and will instead take the 1-2 oz penalty and go with the squeeze (and get more miles in instead of spending that time filtering).

I have some questions, starting with your tips & tricks using the Sawyer Squeeze. When you refer to obtaining a sport drink top, is the pull opening type used with the Smart Water bottles, one option, or can you recommend the actual type or product you’re referring to. I’m not real familiar with these tops you suggested. Thanks.
John Donahue It's just a standard sport cap and nothing crazy. I've had great luck finding them in big box grocery stores. Just make sure to look for Smartwater or Lifewater bottles with the sport cap (pull opening you mention, but the cap remains attached) and you'll be good to go. It's a good weight saver and less fuss.
Depending on the type of hiker the person is, minutes can be very important. They can add up quickly just like ounces and take away from time hiking. For others, it might not be such a big deal.
If the flow of the squeeze and micro are reasonably similar. You must be filtering quite a lot of water to spend an hour longer per day filtering. In my mind, even if the flow was half the speed it would be less than 10 mins extra for 5 litres. How much do you drink man?

I've the same concern with my micro squeeze, when it's freezing I just keep it in my fleece pocket, anytime even when sleeping...

No it's from a Lifewater bottle which I purchased in the same area of the grocery store as Smartwater.

To other hikers: I have tested BeFee too... and Squeeze is better even that BeFree! What I like on the BeFree - it is the soft sillicone bottle, which I'm using with the Squeeze now (the bottle is soft, so it is very easy to filter water with it).
If you go hiking in the freezing temperatures, I recommend Steripen Freedom (UV Light, built-in USB chargable battery inside).

Now that we are in winter here, the filters are in storage and I'm back to AquaMira or boiling. Both the Squeeze and BeFree are great filters out there!
@@matjobin BeFree is not reliable for me anymore, I the "pipes" were damaged during cleaning in the water (several pipes were broken). If you have the soft bottle, you can actually disassemble
the blue filter and take one white part as a adapter for the Sawyer. (There you are able to see the adapter on this video ruclips.net/video/QttaPBYKLi4/видео.html)
Have you tried Steripen Freedom (the USB version)? It is really great - better than AquaMira and boiling:) We have used it for more than 6 000 km and it is great, it is fast, kills viruses, no water taste changes:-)

please excuse my ignorance, very first time learning about water filtration and hiking..what is the point of the bag at all? Does it just provide a "double filtration" ?
Brandy Priddy It’s just a way to collect water and feed it through the filter. I prefer a bag over a dirty water bottle, I do not want to carry around a giant empty water bottle all day.
Nice comparison video. One point however...if you were actually doing this in the field and you put your lips around the bottle to blow it back into its shape you've just put contaminates directly into your mouth from the unfiltered side.
Thanks Eddy G. That is true, though in this video and when I am out in the field my lips never touch the bottle but my hand instead. I'm still able to get the bottle close to its original shape.
Hey man cool video. I did the same with the mini and micro but i added the hydro blu versa flow and the cnoc water bags. 2 liters in 1:18 great fast filter. Can be used as a gravity if you have 2 cnoc bags. Cant be used with smart bottles tho. Check them out and keep up the great work
It appears you tighten the filters too much, doing this can cause a hydro lock; air cannot get in. Notice, when you took the filter off the air is able to enter the bottle and inflate it.

Have been frustrated with the mini. Was about to get a micro, but your review was helpful and will instead take the 1-2 oz penalty and go with the squeeze (and get more miles in instead of spending that time filtering).

I have some questions, starting with your tips & tricks using the Sawyer Squeeze. When you refer to obtaining a sport drink top, is the pull opening type used with the Smart Water bottles, one option, or can you recommend the actual type or product you’re referring to. I’m not real familiar with these tops you suggested. Thanks.
John Donahue It's just a standard sport cap and nothing crazy. I've had great luck finding them in big box grocery stores. Just make sure to look for Smartwater or Lifewater bottles with the sport cap (pull opening you mention, but the cap remains attached) and you'll be good to go. It's a good weight saver and less fuss.
You are counting minutes and I am thinking how important is the minutes in several days trekking???
Depending on the type of hiker the person is, minutes can be very important. They can add up quickly just like ounces and take away from time hiking. For others, it might not be such a big deal.
Can make a large comfort difference when very cold or if your one of the throughhikers who are on the move every minute possible.
i would just put a band of black gorilla tape on the dirty water bottle. you can feel it in the dark too!
If the flow of the squeeze and micro are reasonably similar. You must be filtering quite a lot of water to spend an hour longer per day filtering.
In my mind, even if the flow was half the speed it would be less than 10 mins extra for 5 litres.
