Gonna give some tarp camping ago soon on my hikes , thanks for the tips 😊
So you are talking about an Alpha Direct fleece by PolarTec. A.D comes in 3 weights, from 2 oz/sq. yard to 5.5 oz./sq yard.
@@ericb.4358 Yes, the fleece in this video is made of 60gsm Polartec Alpha Direct.
Hi Matt! How has the Ultra TNT tarp been holding up for you? Any durability issues? Thanks for all the great videos!
@@martindonaldson5433 It has held up well, but I also haven’t been using it as much as my DCF tarp or other DCF shelters lately so there is that. When using it, I’ve found the fabric to be very stable due to the lack of bias stretch and it’s been great in the rain too. In the end it is still heavier than DCF though, has the same bulk, and has similar caveats with packing it up each morning. I haven’t had any major issues with durability when using it or any signs of delamination, but I have had to patch a couple of small pinholes (not anything too different from using DCF). I’m still happy that the fabric exists and hope it gets some updates in the future. Thanks for following along. I greatly appreciate it!
Why would the mini have a worse flow rate than the micro?
Pretty sure I can see it delaminating while you are just holding it
I would go with a tent😊
Lightweight tent, and a lightweight tarp. Can achieve this under 2.5kg or less than 2kg with just the tent.
Sea to Summit Nano plus Gramexpert Bivy i should be ok with that Double Wall System
Recently switched from a v2 to a cutaway 30 and I’m pretty happy with it. The wider shape fits my duplex so much easier. Thanks for the tips.
Hello! What shock cord did you use for the n20 classic?
@GladysReyes-u4m I used 1.6mm (1/16 in) reflective shock cord and a micro cord lock. Purchased both from the Litesmith website.
how do they fare in rainy conditions?
@positivesolutions151 They have been doing pretty well in rain. The improved traction on wet terrain is noticeable compared to earlier iterations of the shoe and the updated upper dries relatively fast.
@@matjobinthanks, does water seep through quickly? Or would feet remain dry in a 10 min walk in the rain
@@positivesolutions151 Yes, water will soak through quickly. If water is a concern, there is a waterproof version of the shoe.
Hello, are these shoes waterproof?
@@JosephTalksMoney No, these are not the waterproof ones.
Im going for the minimo
Commenting while listening to the video, just not a fan of that weight for the drop. This is a good "strengthening" shoe, but I guess positively, can say you can increase the "strengthening" idea by having a heavier shoe :D But overall, thanks for the review
Looks more like the superior 4’s which were the best IMO
You talk 2 much 👎👎👎🤮🤮🤮
I plan on ordering a pair, but do have some concerns on the lower eyelet placing as compared to previous versions. The Lone Peak was one of few models that did not rub on my unusually large big toe knuckle joint. Looks like a great version update!
If the midsole and tread lasts 300 miles I will be happy. Lone Peaks have not been durable since the 3.5 in my experience. Can’t wait for your long term review.
@@wolfeadventures Sorry that has been your experience with the LP. I’ve always got 500+ trail miles out of mine, and even around 800 trail miles with a pair of LP6. The only minor issues I’ve had over the years with the midsole and tread was with a pair of LP4s and LP7. If I remember correctly, I got about 125 miles before the midsole packed out and toe cap peel which I just ended up gluing. With the LP7, the stitchless toe guard overlay started to delam. I ended up gluing that back to the upper too and didn’t have any trouble with it after. Though the fit was a little off for me with that iteration as mentioned in this video. Looking forward to sharing more as I get more mileage in with these 9s. So far they are promising!
@@matjobin What about the 8s? How long do they last?
@@Calisthenics_EnjoyerI wore mine on my first backpacking trip and I’m not sure when it happened, but first 8 miles, a small hole developed in the toe area, which didn’t surprise me considering the light material in that area. The small finger thing near the heel wasn’t large enough to put a finger through, so quite hard to get your foot in there, then on top of that, there was a plastic piece inside the heel portion of the shoe that kept getting bent and it was hard to get back into shape. They were crap.
@@kriswibbenhorstermeister9885 i wore altras paragrim 4 for like 500 k on rough park terrain and like 40 k really technical terrain to moderate trails and it has literally no wear.Hopefully the lone peaks are similar considuring the paragrim is not even for trails its for road running. So far myself i am really impressed with the durability
@ weird I just ran 20 k in them today and I don’t see any problems
been a huge lone peak fan since the 3. but durability is absolutely cratering. the 7's fell apart FAST. i guess VF (who bought Altra in 2018) is doing the classic "buy the brand, cut corners, hope you can milk enough profit before you lose customer loyalty" trick. looking forward to your followup videos to to see if they hold up.
These look nice, I still have a pair of the LP 6 and didn't like the other ones. I still have 3 pairs of lems primal pursuit to go through and I've been enjoying them a lot. I thought the LP 9 were supposed to release with an option to have a different sole? I saw infos on reddit of some lp 9 with vibram soles. I wonder if that was cancelled...
@@mrtru1te Nice! The LP6 was such a great shoe! I haven’t seen a LP with Vibram yet, but if I do I will be picking a pair up. It’s tough to beat a Vibram outsole.
@@matjobin yep! Sure I found the reddit post again, I don't think I can share you the link here, will do on insta.
The vibram ones are being released as well but only in Europe
@@jimjamthebananaman1 where did you find this info? I am In EU so...
@@mrtru1tethe owner of Altra said in an interview vibram is only coming to EU. Search RUclips, it was only a couple of days ago he said it. They’re coming out January
I’m a hardcore minimalist shoe wearer. I just did a few hundred miles on the AT with minimalist hiking shoes (no cushion). My feet feel great, but my ankles get sore (around the top part of the foot). I was hiking on rocks and roots covered in dried leaves the whole time. Anyway, the question - what shoes would you recommend for somebody looking for a level of cushioning that is in-between no cushion and the Lone Peak? Thanks.
Maybe the Altra King MT 2 ?
@@RC-qf3mp The most minimal trail shoe that Altra offers currently is the King MT2. It has a 19mm stack height so it would fit between a true minimal shoe and the Lone Peak. I’ve been really happy with mine, but for high mileage days I find I still prefer the Lone Peak. At least at this time I do. I’ve also worn the Merrell Trail glove and Xero Mesa Trail in the past. Both of those would be a bit more minimal than the Lone Peak and even the King MT2, but I’ve found them to also be a bit narrower. Those three might be a good place to start.
@@matjobin the lugs discounting? it wouldn't be as light as the superior i don't think. certainly not the escrcr
Underrated and American made 🇺🇸💯🎉
I just got one of these, thanks to your video on it. Love how it has plain loops instead of linelocs like my hyperlite tarp. Allows for more variety and less bulk. Also, it’s my first square tarp, so looking forward to new configurations (10x10).
@RC-qf3mp Awesome! 10x10 will give you a lot of options for setting up. Hope you enjoy the tarp! Thanks for watching my videos on it.
@ thanks. I have question about winter camping - i have a Durston X Mid Pro 2. Would it be safe for winter camping to use my tent and then have tarp hanging over it? How much would that reduce condensation and increase warmth inside the tent?
Why would you wear forever chemical around your face? Must really want cancer. Buy a bug net and bug net suit. Never have to mess with chemicals again
What is the size of the monk tarp?
@@georgem8498 9’ long x 4’3” wide.
they suck
Do I understand correctly that (except for the turbo mode), the runtime is less with the NU20 Classic than with the old NU25?
@@eric_festinger Yes, turbo and high modes will diminish slower on the NU20 classic compared to the NU25, but they still diminish. I’ve found the overall runtimes to be shorter with the NU20 classic vs the NU25. It has some nice updates and is adequate for what it is, but I still find that I slightly prefer the old NU25.
@ that’s a shame… but thank you for your reply ☺️
Hi, great video! Wondering how these compare to the new Olympus 6 and the wide Lone peak base models. I own the Olympus 5's and the 6's and they're pm my go to shoe, even to wear indoors and around the city. However, the lone peaks lugs are too thick to wear around the city and let alone indoors.
@@Chupabrah Very different compared to the Olympus and Lone Peak. Aside from the different fit and lower stack height, the lugs are soft and more aggressive. So they’ll feel similar in a way to the LP and wear out faster as an everyday shoe. If looking for an everyday shoe or for pavement, you might want to check out the Escalante. I have a pair that I wear when I’m not on trail for cross-training, gym, everyday. It has a similar fit to the Lone Peak and Olympus, and also a stack height that is very close to the Lone Peak.
Came by to say kudos on the Z seat tip!

There seems to be a huge variance in Thermarest XLite weights, mine weighs in at 400g, this one is 453g, Thermarest quote it at 353g (!) and Ultralight Outdoor Gear weigh it at 377g
Although I’m now thinking maybe the one in this video is a wide?
@shermer75 I use the regular wide which influences difference in the weight. The Xlite NXT will also be a little heavier than the previous Xlite due to the thickness.
Great video & review Mat! With all of your experience with gear & trail miles, I can see your channel going viral very soon. At least you have one big fan, right here. :)
@KevinRStrauss Thank you so much!
Very interesting. 👌🏻👌🏻
Nicely done Mat. God Bless!
Not often seen reviews of various top-end gear. Most just pick one in each category and rave, presumably because of cost to try several. Awesome reviews. What do you think about Topo? Love Topo's Vibram sole; no brand has enough width though (not Altra, Topo, Hoka, Sportiva, Soloman, Asics, Xero, NB). Am also too tall, such that only Western Mountaineering 7' fit. Tried EE, UGQ, HG & Zpacks. Like Zpacks 7' x 9' tarp 5oz, but not reliable enough for thru-hiking. Aversion to stakes, so after DupleXL, Tarptent Aeon sans inner, Durston's Pro 2 ends up with 4-stakes at 21oz. A long way from 5oz. LiteAF Curve dcf and Ultra versions. Nice, but fabric failed on both. Nashville's Graflyte is up next.
@@tomnoyb8301 Thank you! I had tried Topo out of interest (I think the Pursuit?), but they didn’t work for me. I’ve always found Altra to work best for me and provide the most comfort over the years. The Lone Peak has always been my go-to since making the switch to Zero drop/foot shaped footwear years ago. Though footwear is such a specific thing, there’s something out there for everyone with all of the options. The tarp would be great for certain thru-hikes, but might not be the best tool for the job and would depend on several factors before heading out. I’ve been very happy with my tarp over the years. The other shelters you mentioned all have their benefits and drawbacks. The Durston tent is a nice tent and can be a great option for some. In my opinion though, there is no one perfect shelter out there. All fabrics will have their pros and cons too. I haven’t personally used a LiteAF pack so I can’t provide any feedback from experience with that, but I’ve been very happy with my Ultra 200 Pa’lante V2 pack. Currently sitting at over 2,000 trail miles with it and it’s still going strong. I’ve heard others having delam issues with the fabric, but that hasn’t been the case for me yet. I don’t have as many miles on my Aluula Graflyte Cutaway yet, but I’m looking forward to seeing how it continues to hold up over time. It’s a neat fabric.
Outstanding.
I have a Luxe Minipeak pyramid. Usually just leave the inner at home and have a 2mil piece of plastic for the floor. 4 stakes and a trekking pole and you our out of the rain.
Nice video. Do you still use the bivy or bivy+tarp combination? Hilarious joke about lowering base weight by adding stuff to your pockets!
@@RC-qf3mp Thanks! I do still use the bivy on its own and also with the tarp. It’s tough to beat the versatility with that combination. I used it a few times this year, but I was interested in seeing how the Abode would do with several more nights. The tent made sense in other situations. Ha! Those pockets could probably fit most of my pack into them, but it would make for some awkward miles. I’m glad you appreciated the joke 🙂.
Solid video. I have a budget Coleman 1 man tent for about 10 years that is amazing for the $25 price tag. I've recently upgraded to a Lanshan 1 and find it rather small and a bit time consuming to put up at the end of a long day. A few hikes this summer I went back to the old school Coleman. Money doesn't always buy happiness..
@@BoulderHikes Thank you. Coleman makes some solid gear and it sounds like you got a great deal with that rent. I agree. The most important thing (and thing that brings me happiness on the trail) is having fun out there.
All of the top gear. Love it
Sounds even louder than DCF
Gorgeous work man, storytelling is beautiful and simply captivating!
