Nitecore NU20 Classic First Look & Comparison To NU25 Headlamp
I recently purchased the new Nitecore NU20 Classic out of interest in how it would compare to my favorite Nitecore NU25 that I've been using over the years. On paper, it appeared to be an improved upgrade. In this video, I go over the updates to the headlamp and how it compares to the NU25 and the updated NU 25 UL version. I hope this video helps any of you that might be undecided with whether or not to upgrade, or if you are just looking to purchase a brand new headlamp in general.

    What do you think of fast deploy ridge lines for use with a tarp? Seems like they’d provide more room inside and avoid hassle of having a stick or pole get in the way. But I never see ultralight guys with videos on ridgelines for their tarps. Am I missing something here?

    • @matjobin
      @matjobin 2 дня назад

      @RC-qf3mp I haven't personally used them with my flat tarps, but I have used one in the past with a hammock system. I like the versatility and simplicity that a flat tarp provides and haven't ever found that I've needed a ridgeline with my UL tarps. My campsite selection and surroundings will influence this greatly though too. If I found I was only setting up an A-frame or I was setting up in areas with a little more exposure to wind then I might consider a ridgeline with my tarp, or using a shaped catenary cut tarp.

    Mat, if you had to just pick one back "to rule them all" between the Cutaway and the V2, what would you pick? Use case would be for all types of trips from 1-2 nights to a PCT thru-hike and anything in between. Does one of these two packs work better with carrying a bear can? BV450, likely sitting empty on the top.

    • @matjobin
      @matjobin 14 дней назад

      @@ColbyPark-dj6zx That’s a tough call. Both packs are fantastic and I’ve been very happy with both. All gear will be subjective, but if I were to pick one pack I would probably lean more toward the V2. I like the simplicity of the pack and it aligns with my hiking style just a little bit more. If I want more pockets and pocket access while on the go, then the Cutaway would be my pick. Storing an empty bear can on top, I have found both to carry it well. If I’m storing the can full inside of the pack, the Cutaway carries it slightly better due to the wider barrel shape of the pack compared to a taper that the V2 has.

    • @ColbyPark-dj6zx
      @ColbyPark-dj6zx 14 дней назад

      @@matjobin I'm torn because I love the shoulder strap concept from Nashville. This may be a harder one for me to decide on... Do you notice a difference in how they carry weight. My base weight is right about 9lbs. So maybe a little on the higher end, but do you notice one carries weight better than another (since I am on the higher side and if there are longer water/food carries)?

    • @matjobin
      @matjobin 13 дней назад

      @@ColbyPark-dj6zx The straps on the Cutaway are a pretty neat concept. They’ll allow for a fine tuned adjustment and really let you dial things in as needed. This can also allow the strap to feel more form fitting and carry the weight differently. The V2 won’t offer that as much, which is one of the reasons I prefer it overall. For the simplicity I mentioned. Without all of the strap adjustments like the Cutaway it will most likely feel more like a regular pack (without any load lifters either). At a 9lb baseweight, either pack should work without any trouble. I normally don’t carry more than 20 lbs total a majority of the time, but I have carried around 25 lbs on occasion. I found the V2 to be a little more comfortable due to the padding, webbing belt, and design. But I wouldn’t want to be carrying 25 lbs in either pack frequently. I’d say that would probably be their limit for most. I have some videos up on my channel going over each pack on their own and giving a closer look that might help a bit too if you haven’t seen them yet and are interested.

      @@ColbyPark-dj6zx Always happy to help. Thanks so much for subbing to my channel. I greatly appreciate it and am happy you’ve found it helpful. Yeah, I’d still lean toward the V2 based on how it feels for me and aligns with my style, but the Cutaway is just as good of a pack. I think both would work with that baseweight, and it would depend on individual style/preferences with features. There’s a lot of great gear out there and something for everyone. I’m always intrigued and interested in trying new things. I’m always learning something new and that growth is something I enjoy out on the trail.

    most bugs cant see color. their vision is based off of seeing verticle vs horozontal lines. this was a neuroscience eurika moment circa 2013, since they really evolved their own eyes a completely different way. thats not true of pollinators/bees. a lot of mosqueto vision is chemotaxis and heat. also if you want to get away from bugs, im guessing youre the type of person to shreek at this, but you can find old cans of "bed bug doom" on auction websites or antique stores. its powdered ddt and its like 1000x stronger than permethrin/deet. that means you can take a small teaspoon and suspend it in rubbing alcohol and use a very small quantity to give you all day protection. it does more than annoy mosquetos, it straight up ko's them. most developing countries still use ddt en mass and it saves lives and is probably better for the environment than the crazy amount of deet people cake on now days. just dont do it around any bald eagle nests lol.

    Another that thinks the screen tent liners in conjunction with a tarp for rain protection is a good compromise between weight and being comfortable and bug free. The tent liners are not that expensive and designed to be set up using a ridgeline and a few cheap lightweight ground stakes. Swatting bugs in camp all evening is not my idea of a good time so a few extra ounces is worth it to me.

    I bought this about 5 years ago and have only used it 3x until last weekend. It's been stored in an indoor closet the whole time. When I went to set it up, the bungee cords in the poles had lost most of its elasticity. There was so much slack that I had to pop off the end caps and shorten the cord in order to connect the poles. I have a 20 year-old Mountain Hardwear Room With A View tent and haven't had this issue. Have you had this issue? Fortunately, Mountain Hardwear has a lifetime warranty so I already sent back the poles. Also, the poles and stakes stuff sacks were gooey. The waterproof coating did not stand the test of 5 years. Weird. Is this the downside to an ultra light tent? Thanks!

      @user-pq8le7qo4u Sorry to read that this happened to you. Ultralight gear definitely requires more care than traditional gear and does have its downsides. PU/silicone coatings can age too. It's tough to determine what happened to your tent though. It could be influenced by things like the area it was stored in or the way it was stored, also if it was stored damp in any way. I don't own this tent anymore as I generally prefer a tarp or single trekking pole style tent so I use one of those. I never had any issues with the tent though.

    Just a heads up for people looking to buy... Theyre a fantastic shoe, but I've owned three pairs, and the first two began failing where the midsole joins to the upper around the outer ball of the foot. I put shoe glue along the entire midsole/fabric seam on the fresh pair and haven't had an issue with them, I'd suggest you do the same, as it seems to be a common issue.

    I just got a pair about 3 days ago and agree with your initial assessment on the heel collar. It sits really low but after wearing them daily for the past 3 days it seems to have broken in and they feel really secure on my heel. The foam is softened quite a bit and overall they're very comfortable. In terms of sizing, I did have to go up to an 11 from my usual 10.5. I think I would prefer The timp due to feeling a bit more nimble but these are going to feel pretty amazing after a long day on a rocky Trail. I did have durability issues with the 5s sole peeling off but I don't foresee that being an issue with these. Great review! Thanks for taking the time to put it together

    Great review. I wasn’t aware of this shoe. I’ve since fully transitioned to only minimalist shoes and want that ground feel and flexibility in the sole. My top concern is good tread, esp on slippery rocks. But good to know this shoe is available if i ever need or want more cushion. How is the treat on slippery rocks? Seems like it would be the same as for the Lone PEaks - which isn’t great. But if find myself stuck in a town with limited options, and need a shoe, this looks like a good option.

      mud pad. not for general use. gimmicky tbf, albeit heavy design details making it feel like some sort of ltd lux run which had always been the kind of quality lvl altra put on for all its models if it is to have all that bloated models, vs just one model to rule all terrain. also ironman/tria/sparta all that bs are gimmicky too. however it took me nearly a decade to realize i can use the lp on fr biking. only those who know will know and even then it will be a super fraction. pure marketing choice that vf put bikers to the backburner. in the 00s when you talk bikers, it is going to be xc and fr folks. and when you talk the coolkid outdoor, it is going to be bikers.

    of course deet is bad. it is ment to keep bugs off you. but is non toxic and good for use on your skin. ( were the bugs want to bit you). bugs are very bad north of bakersfield's ca due to farming ( water), but farther north fire is the biggest problem. ( this year the “park fire” 450,000 acres). but was found to be arson.

    Hi Mat, I noticed that you’ve used both Tyvek and Polycro as groundsheet options. I’d love to hear which one you prefer overall and what trade-offs you’ve found with each. Thanks again!

    • @matjobin
      @matjobin 2 месяца назад

      @@patrickblack916 It depends on the type of trip or long hike, and the location for me. Sometimes I even don't use a groundsheet at all if I'm using a tent. I generally prefer Tyvek for its durability and longevity, but its trade off would be an increase in weight compared to polycro. I find it a lot easier to shake debris off when packing up on wet mornings at camp. I've had a good experience with polycro and haven't had any major issues with it, but it can puncture easier. I've also found it to collect a lot more debris than Tyvek which makes it a pain to clean off in wet environments. This also leads to carrying out additional weight if not cleaned before leaving camp so the weight can creep up close to what the Tyvek weighs. If I'm looking to go as light as possible and things will be relatively dry, I'd pack the polycro. Most of the time I find I go with the Tyvek. Thanks for the question and for watching!

    8:58. The half pyramid is my personal favorite. I can set it up in about 90 seconds. The versatility is phenomenal. Want breeze? Open up the sides. Feeling raindrops? Pin the sides together at the front pole. I’ve weathered torrential downpours in this configuration when hiking. And you don’t have to be a BlackBelt, Origami Ninja to pitch it.

    Hi Mat. As usual, very much enjoyed this video. Got to see a "blue trail" + the AT. I also find it interesting to find and walk on old portions of the trail. As info, I was stationed at the submarine base in Groton, Ct 1971-1974. When time permitted, I would walk some of the blue trails in southeast CT (using a 1971 edition of the CT Walk Book). Once went to northwest CT near Salisbury and hiked up to the top of Bear Mountain. Always enjoy your narration and filming - look forward to future videos. God Bless!
