The vocals are live, the claps are a backing track. The mic setup to get the sound of the claps live would be insane. The "handiography" is impressive even if it's not what's producing the clapping sounds. As others have noted, this is how they perform it in concert.
They've been performing this even asfar back as the Avidays. Infact, they have a separate video on how they do the clapping and snapping while performing so that is live too.Incredible!
They perform this live in concerts all the time. Since they are in venues like arenas, they use a backing track for this song. This was last year when they were passing a virus around while on tour. Kirstie may have been sick or recovering at this time.
Kirstie just announced she's pregnant again! ❤️ Not far enough that it would cause breathing problems, but definitely could be morning sickness & other problems to deal with. But then the others were staggering their breaths, too, so... 🙄 Anyway, they're on their annual Christmas tour now so maybe we'll have some great live fan videos out there to watch soon! Those concerts are always such high energy and so beautiful! You know it's Christmas when Pentatonix fills the air! 💞
I'm pretty sure that is a backing track to their live vocals. I'm with Luna, it's beautiful, just the same. Thanks Maggie and Luna. Brightened my morning! ❤
I love how you can hear Kirsties breaths! That’s very impressive! Now, can you do the same with Mitch’s breathing on “Carol of the Bells”? I swear that man must have gills, I can only catch two breaths in the entire three minute song!
The clapping and snapping HAS to also be live because there is no way they could all hit their thighs at exactly the same moment as the pre-recorded sound effect, especially across all 5 of them. The stage action would have to be off at least a few times and it wasn't. Great performance in any event.
Great to see another Pentatonix reaction. I think when you have to try really hard and look so close to see if for sure they are singing live then you are REALLY good vocalists live. To sound that perfect live takes great talent for sure
Now you need to see their live version of "Bohemian Rhapsody"...Matt, Kevin. and Scott along with Mitch and Kirstie singing...oh man, it was so goooood!
This is one that they didn’t perform live until a few years ago, I was at the concert where they performed it live for the first time. You should for your own entertainment check out some of the rehearsal BTS that they shared a few years ago, Matt had never done this and it was hysterical.
@@pjschmid2251this was filmed last Christmas so she wasn’t pregnant then. Not sure why she said it just came out a couple days ago. Unless they recently posted it again but I remember watching this last year when it aired. Plus the pink and blue outfits are from last years tour.
Yes, the body percussion is recorded and the vocals are live. I was at a concert a couple years ago where there was a glitch and the body percussion sounds started before they were ready to sing, lol. They covered well, though.
Hello BEAUTIFUL Maggie! If you search and find the original video of WWH, PTX has a tutorial choreography of the video, that breaks down each individual part. Great reaction as always and you have such a kind heart. Merry Christmas.
They sound the same at their concerts. It is very clear at their concerts that there is very little "production" in their voices. The claps and snaps are live.
OMG,. so obsessed with whether they're live or not. It takes away from the whole reaction. Are they live? No they're not, Yes they are, No they're not. Wait they are, Maybe not....EXHAUSTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They are ALWAYS live if it says they are live. Where you got thrown off are on the live performances during the pandemic. All performers had to come up with creative and unique ways of putting on live TV performances. Go back and watch them again. They have mics and in-ears.
No everyone! This is 100% live...no back tracking...no overdubbing. I'm actually surprised by those of you who don't believe it because y'all have solid music education and vocal training.
I have performed this some years ago with some friends and we actually nailed it. Doing the clapping is doable, doing the singing is doable. But doing both simultaneously is the hard part. You must practice so hard, the the clapping comes automatically. The hard part is that the clapping rhythm and the singing rhythms are different!
This is a favorite of mine as its very soothing somehow. Mitch my boy! Lol by the way, have you reacted to Eva Cassidy? She was an absolutely amazing singer. She is well loved by musicians and vocalists so you may already know of her.
PTX has a "White Winter Clapping Tutorial" where they show you how to do each clapping pattern. It has outtakes showing some of the problems they had when filming.
OMG, as long as this has been around and you are only now aware? TBH, I can only check in once in a while, though I have several albums, so it doesn't really surprise me. There is so much good music out there that tends to slide under the radar. Love your videos. Edit: The original music video had Avi singing the base part. Both versions are great, so enjoy.
It’s my understanding it would be impossible to mic them perfectly to hear the claps distinctly in a live performance, hence they prerecorded a clap track. It’s all them. And actually I believe this was the performance where Scott and Mitch had been sick. You can tell Scott is still not at his best and the other members are stepping up.
Am pretty sure this was last year, the whole group had the cold, one after the other. So the extra breaths from Kirstie may be caused by that, in order not to sound too nasal.🤷🏾♀️
Just letting you know.... Voiceplay and Geoff released their Christmas videos on their Patreons Friday and Saturday. They are both absolutely amazing. When Voiceplay did "Sleeping In The Cold Below" last year by Warframe video games they liked it so much they commissioned Voiceplay to do a video for their new Warframe video game Warframe1999. Voiceplay released a Teaser Short on RUclips about it with more information.
The clap track is prerecorded and the vocals are live. They created that so they could do it in concert for the clapping to be heard distinctly but I think it's more pressure to look like you are doing it.
Kirsty is pregnant which is why she's breathing so much. And they are better live, in concert, than their studio recordings. There are not enough good things to say about these guys
Hi there and greetings from snowy Wyoming! (yes it does exist 😁) I agree wholeheartedly that their arrangements are always so stunning. If you want to see some live performances that they just released, look for Hallelujah and Bohemian Rhapsody..... 5 people, just mics and 100% live. And it's great to hear Matt's bass in those particular songs as opposed to Avi. Absolutely beautiful renditions! even if you don't get a chance to react to them, I think you should give them a listen anyway. I guarantee you'll love them!
I dunno why she would say it probably isn’t live. Kirstin started off the song not flat, but slightly under the note. If it was prerecorded that wouldnt be there. Just the backing claps probably
Thanks Renee. Always a joy to watch you. Check out O Holy Night by PTX. Breathtaking. Pure Imagination/Christmas Time is Here is sooo dreamy and beautiful
Because there are lots of people on the WWW who love to claim that Pentatonix is over-produced and all fake and can't really sing that well. It's tiresome. I've seen Pentatonix live three times and they're awesome.
There used to be a huge stigma against singers not actually singing live (now it's a small stigma and everybody pretty much ignores it). Pentatonix gets flak because their whole shtick is being amazing singers. Non-industry folk often miss that the reality of live production is that in any intricate arrangement, something is going to be pre-recorded (in this case, probably the claps). So some people hear one thing that is recorded material, they instantly believe it's ALL recorded material and go, "SEE?! I tolded you day wernt singing live!" like idiots that want a medal for finding nothing. I imagine it's become reflexive to pre-defend Pentatonix at this point. Thank you for listening to my slightly bitter TED talk.
😊❤ Hi Maggie! Merry Christmas! 🎅🤶 OK , so many people think that the clapping is a back track. I disagree. Think about the fact that usually Kevin carries all the percussion alone clapping, stomping with his beat boxing! I do see that Kirsten is very light wirh her hands. But it sounds to me like Matt and Kevin are the strongest and then Scott and Mitch are using a medium pressure. Of course I could be wrong; but it's my humble opinion!! LOL 😂 But I know for sure the singing is live. This was on live on Good Morning America and they do a second song too. 😉😅 Luv ya! 😊❤❤
Unsubscribed.... So obsessed with live or not.... Reminds me so much of the commercial "is it live or is it Memorex?" I didn't care for that commercial either
What should I react to next?! Sponsor a reaction on my channel here: www.maggierenee.com/book-me/sponsor-a-reaction-live
Would love to see you react to Frog Leap Studios/Frog Leap Band's cover of "Africa"
I think you should react to Juice Wrld's song "Empty out your Pockets". It is released recently and i think its worth reacting.
The vocals are live, the claps are a backing track. The mic setup to get the sound of the claps live would be insane. The "handiography" is impressive even if it's not what's producing the clapping sounds. As others have noted, this is how they perform it in concert.
I feel that you may have been a fellow roadie at some point (or otherwise versed in the audiological arts). 😎
This 100%.
The cut in Kirsten, is the main reason you notice when she disappears. Goes to show she is a major cornerstone that ptx would not exist without.
Levels of concentration on vocal detail AND clapping at the same time. It is vocally simplistic for them.
Those are last year's holiday tour outfits.
I am shooketh too. I love everything Pentatonix does.
I'm pretty sure that is a backing track to their live vocals. I'm with Luna, it's beautiful, just the same. Thanks Maggie and Luna. Brightened my morning! ❤
This song, particularly this version of it, is my favorite christmas song
I wouldn't have noticed Kirstie's breathing anymore than anyone else's, breathing had it not been the only one pointed out.
I love how you can hear Kirsties breaths! That’s very impressive! Now, can you do the same with Mitch’s breathing on “Carol of the Bells”? I swear that man must have gills, I can only catch two breaths in the entire three minute song!
O Holy Night! Video is amazing
Yay! The start of the Christmas reactions! This is my all-time favorite of Pentatonix. It's on repeat every year and I never get tired of it. ☃️🎅🎄🎁
The clapping and snapping HAS to also be live because there is no way they could all hit their thighs at exactly the same moment as the pre-recorded sound effect, especially across all 5 of them. Please Santa Please, is Amazing.
Now you need to see their live version of "Bohemian Rhapsody"...Matt, Kevin. and Scott along with Mitch and Kirstie singing...oh man, it was so goooood!
It's just as brilliant live!!!
I’m not sure when this version was performed, but live or not it’s been a while since Kirstie is now VERY pregnant with baby number two!
OMG I'm back down the rabbit hole with them again. And YES Luna is awesome.
This is one that they didn’t perform live until a few years ago, I was at the concert where they performed it live for the first time. You should for your own entertainment check out some of the rehearsal BTS that they shared a few years ago, Matt had never done this and it was hysterical.
This shows just how in synch they are with each other. Kirsty is probably tired from looking after her baby while continuing to rehearse and work.
While being pregnant too.
@@pjschmid2251this was filmed last Christmas so she wasn’t pregnant then. Not sure why she said it just came out a couple days ago. Unless they recently posted it again but I remember watching this last year when it aired. Plus the pink and blue outfits are from last years tour.

Two of my favorite Christmas songs from them are the official video of "Where are you Christmas". And their audio only cover of "Little Toy Trains"
And Please Santa Please.
Percussion like this is usually backing tracking on songs like this. But their singing is live.
Hello BEAUTIFUL Maggie! If you search and find the original video of WWH, PTX has a tutorial choreography of the video, that breaks down each individual part. Great reaction as always and you have such a kind heart. Merry Christmas.
Love PTX, they are so talented!!!
Their singing during touring is live. Love love them. Tx so much. Greetings from South Africa
They sound the same at their concerts. It is very clear at their concerts that there is very little "production" in their voices. The claps and snaps are live.
Is a breathy piece.
OMG,. so obsessed with whether they're live or not. It takes away from the whole reaction. Are they live? No they're not, Yes they are, No they're not. Wait they are, Maybe not....EXHAUSTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have seen this in concert 3 times. Love it.
I just watched their Hallelujah live from about 2 months ago. It's amazing and definitely has no background tracks!
It took them awhile to get this one down where they'd could do it at concerts but it's amazing. One of my favs from them
They are ALWAYS live if it says they are live. Where you got thrown off are on the live performances during the pandemic. All performers had to come up with creative and unique ways of putting on live TV performances. Go back and watch them again. They have mics and in-ears.
They put out a play book for chorale groups to do this song. Many schools have done this since Pentatonix released it. They are on You Tube.
great harmonies....

Correct...they're singing LIVE, but it's amazing that they must STILL follow the track of the percussion !!
Just letting you know....

They said that they used a clap backing track.
Scott has mentioned they worked on this song for a couple of years before they were confident enough to perform it live.
The clap track is prerecorded and the vocals are live. They created that so they could do it in concert for the clapping to be heard distinctly but I think it's more pressure to look like you are doing it.
There is a video on their site which shows them trying to learn the choreo
Who from Pentatonix would you like to sing with?
Kirsty is pregnant which is why she's breathing so much. And they are better live, in concert, than their studio recordings. There are not enough good things to say about these guys

There is an older video showing each person’s hand movements separately and then then all together
She may have been sick at this performance. She had been sick over Christmas on a couple occasions
7:40, You had it! That was pretty good! But, I’m with you there; even seeing the tutorial online how to do it, still not coordinated.
I'm not sure of the date this was from but Kirsty is pregnant. That might have something to do with it.💚💚💚
Thanks Renee. Always a joy to watch you. Check out O Holy Night by PTX. Breathtaking. Pure Imagination/Christmas Time is Here is sooo dreamy and beautiful
I'm curious. Why the focus on if this performance is totally live or not?
Because there are lots of people on the WWW who love to claim that Pentatonix is over-produced and all fake and can't really sing that well. It's tiresome. I've seen Pentatonix live three times and they're awesome.

I wonder if she was pregnant with Elianna. I know I couldn’t breathe when I was pregnant! 🤣
Kevin is the beast though, cam keep up with it
LOL, You comment on the choreography just before the complicated choreography starts.
What a great live performance! Loved you reaction and analysis and catching all the time Kirstin takes a breath.
But couldn't catch the others? Lol
Check out the original by Fleet Foxes
👍❤️❤️
Its live. They always sing live. The clapping could have been pre-recorded.
Ok, I was about to watch this video. But once I saw it’s not the official release with Avi, I’m out!
She's pregnant, so .maybe that's why she's needing more breaths.
Do people like Xmas again? Like, not-crazy-Christmas-lady people? I must be the last Scrooge standing. 😉
What is your obsession with "live"? You totally miss so many things.... arrangement, sound, lyrics, percussion ...
They’re a little bit off, but they’re always amazing
itcould be she has to ketch her breath because she is pregnant
I can’t stand your reactions. I only watch when it’s PTX you constantly dis everything they do as if anyone cares what you think
Hitting that x in the top right corner and shutting the f up isn't all that hard!
Why are you so obsessed with calling them liars??
Unsubscribed.... So obsessed with live or not.... Reminds me so much of the commercial "is it live or is it Memorex?" I didn't care for that commercial either
If you want to know if they are live, listen for Kirsty and Kevin. They are the two that are most likely to be a little pitchy.
The claps are likely Kevin. Their choreography just adds to his beatboxing
I LIKE THAT KRISTIN HAS TO CLOSE HER EYES. I WOULD PROBABLY HAVE TO,😮😮😮
