one of my favorite things is when someone actually gives advice without a care for what others think. Its not something that can satisfy everyone, but only for people who can get past being offended and actually listen. Thanks gabe ❤❤
I'm trying to bring this stuff into the light more because I wish someone had done that for me years ago. Musicians deserve so much more. So happy to hear that it's connecting with you.
Great show in Atlanta the other night. I was bummed that meet and greet got cancelled but the show was absolutely awesome. All 4 bands crushed it. Loved your drumming as always.
Wow! I've seen quite a few "How to make living playing music" type of videos, but this one here is the most helpful and realistic I've ever seen! Great job dude!
Great video. I'm 55. My gigging days are over now. It was fun (and sometimes a grind). The number one lesson I learned over the years is: *the value of practice* . It's what separates a decent band from a great band. For individual practice, it's not enough to just 'learn the song'. That's step one. You have to play every part over-and-over-and-over - to the point where you can play it in your sleep....perfectly. For band practice, you have to log the hours in going over your set *together* . That's where the cohesion is going to happen. That's what makes an audience feel that they are experiencing something special. In my last band, we were relentless when it came to practice. It was common for us to see other local bands coming out to watch our band. The difference between their shows and ours: *preparation* . I love this video because you're being brutally honest about the fact that you will have to *work* with intention - and that it won't be easy ....but worth it. Slow-and-steady wins the race. Great job.
Brutally honest advice is what I needed. This video has inspired me so much and is genuinely some of the best advice I've ever received from anyone. Thank you Gabe!
Excellent video with great value. I decided to go full time in drumming after seeing your first video on going pro a year or so back. Currently teaching, gigging and recording as a session player excatly how you started after quitting your dayjob. Working on future money is the toughest part for me. This video hit close to home, full of great advice. Thank you Gabe!
This (and your video 'Brutally Honest Advice For Musicians Without A Band') feels like the exact info I've needed to really hear and get through to my head for a very long time. Thank you man.
Not gonna lie, that was the most inspiring Video, that I've ever seen in my entire Life... Gabe, I'm so glad and thankful for your youtube channel and your great advice. Yo I’ve been watching your channel for a few years, I’ve always found that you had good content.. but this video really resonates with me. Like you’ve opened a door at a glimpse of my future I’ve got the will. I want this
Thanks a lot for the information and advice. I've watched the video many times, and it makes total sense. It's very motivating. You're really brave and sincere for sharing this knowledge.
You've gotta convince Dylan to make one of these accounts. I'm a guitarist and this is so enlightening, I can't imagine how much more helpful it will be with another guitarist doing it. (I also REALLY want those guitar POVs in yalls shows)

i watch a lot of vids on this topic and usually i am annoyed and bored by their samey advice, this video is refreshing and motivating with a lot of info i've never heard. thank you!
I have to deeply thank you Dave for being the one who finally make a video about how complicated Is this topic, most musicians who have the blessing of making a decent living (not even a millionare living) out of only music don't take the time of sharing their journey in a methodical way, most of the time Is just a story about holding in line and having a lucky strike, and your video shows that Is a journey that needs time and hardwork to grow and strengthen your mindset, the mindset that will help you solve the complicated but common problems of a person that Is willing to achive a dream. And by now, your personal testimony might not strengthen peoples mindset, but strengthen their hope. Great video.
When I was gigging hard I always put My union trade job #1. Music came and went and it was a blast ! I fully retired at 55 years old from My construction trade. A lot of My fellow musicians are in their late 50s without a pot to piss in. To the young musicians have fun out there and have a career to fall back on.
I never liked traveling to play the same songs over and over. Rather run a business with my wife and make my own music in my home studio with my dogs 😆
Thank you very much this video really opened my eyes 👀 on how any musician can survive without doing day jobs and work their dream job by playing music. again Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart ❤️
This is true.. you will get calls for gigs, you will be in demand. But regardless nowadays I’m seeing dudes that got gigs just because they show up on time and they can play the songs in the pocket but on a very basic level. Theres a lack of working musicians in general compared to 10, 15 Years ago everywhere aside from music capitols
Thank you for this video man, I really needed the encouragement right now. I've been in kind of a low place and seeing how my dreams are actually possible is very reassuring. It's going to be a lot of hard work I know but if you want something bad enough you will do it!!!
The biggest problem for me right now is that I can't even afford a drum kit .its too expensive for me to purchase that I can't even afford a cheap or a second hand kit. This was easily one of the best, if not the best advice videos for musicians I’ve ever watched. It’s not just about your skill on your instrument although that is absolutely crucial. You have to have other soft skills as well like networking and branding. Great job covering everything and laying out an actual roadmap that can work if you just put in the time and don’t give. Believe in yourself and don’t stop grinding we can all do this. ❤
Gabe, totally appreciate what you do here. Your brutal honesty about your income levels from DBO through the years is commendable. You have worked your a$$ off and now you are reaping the rewards. Work ethic is something that many people either never learned or don't grasp. You kill it!
Thank you so much for this video Gabe 🙏🏻 I’ve still got about four minutes left but so far everything you are suggesting is what I have been doing for the last year. This lets me know I’ve been on the right course and I’m not wasting my time with what I’ve been doing. I just started shooting videos for my other YT channel for my music. I’m about to drop a ton of vocal covers and then finish working on two different demos I’ve been writing. It feels amazing to get back to a dream I gave up on twenty years ago. Thanks again for giving us a look into your life and helping us navigate the industry. Yah bless!
Dude, my band and I are trying to figure out ways to get started gigging and gaining a following. This video is super helpful and we are 100% going to follow this roadmap! I'll let you know a few years from now how it's going and hopefully say that we're fulfilling our dreams!! You're the best Gabe!
bro! this video has helped me a lot! seriously i wrote down all your advices, thank you! what a great way to explain every single toppic, you deserve all the success you are recieving!
This is a good thing your doing here Gabe. I saw I Prevail for the first time a few weeks ago. I'm 57 years old and have been to a few shows, I can honestly say I Prevail is one of the best shows I've ever seen. Listened to all the records on the road trip from western NY. Wore an i Prevail shirt to Metallica show yesterday in Boston, I got lots of thumbs up.
Hi Gabe, thank you for so freely sharing your mind on this and alot of other deeper topics, that i would other wise have never thought about so deeply, hence having myself feeling stuck or like giving up. amazing video.
This video should be renamed "Brutally Honest Advice for broke Musicians in America that have an environment where they can work without limitations and a solid enough network of musicians with whom they can form tribute or cover bands with" but I know it wouldn't be as catchy and I also know that making money through RUclips is a big part of your game. You need the clicks, I get that. Just try not to feed on the desperate. This is not "easy I promise you". This varies insanely on where you live, who you know, what's your skill level and what kind of house do you have. Normal people live on 10k a year already and have bills to pay and mouths to feed monthly non stop. It's not like they can just quit and take a leap of faith. 3 students per week is as unrealistic for most people as gigging 3 times a month. You're not guaranteed those opportunities if you just put more time and effort into drumming. Also where I'm from, you can't make a normal living on 10k and there's no way you make 10k on that alone. Keep in mind that you're reality as true as it is to you it's just a drop in an ocean filled with a lot of other people's cultural, educational and economical status around the world.
The advices in the video I believe are genuine and can help people to get higher chances of getting a successful musician's career. However, I agree with you. I see a bit of survivorship bias here.
I'd love to hear your take on drum techs. How is it having your own tech? Making a living from music without being the musician on stage kinda thing. Love all the great advice though Gabe!
Wow, this is the best video I have ever seen on the reality of being a musician. Had I seen this 20 years ago when I was 16. I might have been a musician by now. Thank you so much for sharing honestly.
I love the Band and i love your whole personality Gabe. I cant wait to see you at the reload festival 2025. You will see me in the pit thats for sure. Big love from germany to one of the best.
Wow. Powerful video. And so well said. When you put it like that, it sounds so simple. Not easy just simple. Life has a way of making a lot of noise so you can’t see the clarity of what it is you actually need to do. That’s my issue anyway. I’m a very skilled and experienced drummer. But I find myself jaded by the lack of quality musicians to play with. Making videos is all well and good, but I need something to chew on to keep the fire alive. And for me that’s playing live. But without quality musicians to play with that doesn’t happen often enough. Any way thank you for your wonderful insight and congratulations on a well earned career.
