He shows us how great a friend he can be, he shows us how the people of Japan are taking to him and showing their spirit amidst natural disasters and man made ones. I spent just 2 days with Ken, Koyuki and Tom Cruise because they filmed a few scenes of the last samurai in an old farmer's house i own near Engyo-ji, and they also slept at the Inn a friend owns there. but i wasn't allowed to film them at all. If the subject of the video wasn’t enough to show you how genuine and affable Ken is, surely the fact that he humored Chris with the spinning top and the outtake at the end will
This is why I love OG RUclipsrs! Chris went from filming 144p video about his tiny bedroom apartment in middle of nowhere Japan to literally meeting Ken Watanabe years later! Dreams indeed can come true and this video is truly inspiring.
He’s everything I thought he would be. Intimidating, handsome, philosophical, gentle, and intelligent all at once. He’s amazing! Ken Watanabe isn’t too bad either.
When somebody says to you "バカだね” with a smile on their face, you know they like you. This was a fantastic video and your sincerity and honesty throughout was great and your portrayal of Ken Watanabe absolutely wonderful.
To those still learning, he's talking about 23:09 "馬鹿だね" 馬鹿 is the kanji for "baka", or "fool". だね is the hiragana for "da ne?" which is pretty much a rhetorical "Right?" So, pretty much "What a fool."
@@ninjanick9793 I doubt that it was an actual insult in this situation. They spent several days together if I get it right, they laugh and get along. So light jabs is a sign of friendship here. Especially in a culture like Japan where people interact more on a professional level if they dont know each other.
@@ninjanick9793 "Bakadanee"(You're/He's silly) with a smile never means insulting. We use it among good friends and sometimes use it as a kind of praise or following up on mistakes.
Imagine getting called “baka” by the Ken Watanabe, what an incredible honour. Srsly though, I can’t stop smiling at how happy Chris is. Careful, they might revoke your British citizenship due to this unseemly display of joy 😉
Ken Watanabe seems like a very down-to-earth kind person. I like him now then before because he's not only a great actor, but he's also a genuinely nice person.
"I'm not a big star in Japan. I'm an actor. I have a very normal life. Four days a week, I cook at home. A star doesn't do that." But for sure he is a fighter and surviver, battled myeloid leukemia and stomach cancer.
The other side of Ken Watanabe is that he cheated on his 1st marriage and 2nd marriage multiple times and abandoned his 2 children from the 1st marriage.
Chris even managed to hold back his comedy sarcasm, which shows how much he was concentrating! 👍 Well done sir, a serious piece of work to be proud of.
3mins in: "Try not to make a fool of myself" Ending: "What a fool!" I guess that's mission failed! 😅 Great video Chris what an achievement. Please don't leave Japan just yet
I volunteered here about one year after the earthquake. I subsequently met my wife(who's home town is Kessenuma) and moved to Tokyo. Kessenuma is my countryside home away from home. Great place and great people.
I really admire it when an actor tries to remain just a ‘normal guy’ even after they become world famous. Ken is just a humble bloke who uses his fame for good and he doesn’t let it get to his head. He’s a person first and an actor second. I love that.
For anyone coming from the biggest mistakes video, at 6:08 Chris straight up tells that he was in Osaka in 2013, so that's where Ken Watanabe might have gotten a clue that Chris was lying about how long he's been in Japan 😅
Man this is so sick , the production value, the interaction with ken, everything is so perfect! Kudos to you Chris! Keep up the good work and don’t forget to jump and pound the rock!
Damn, you could literally feel the elation Chris had in this video as he _finally_ got to speak with Japan's superhero. I would pay good money to see an anime adaptation of Chris' life after moving to Japan. Bloody good for you, mate. Don't go breaking our hearts by spontaneously leaving Japan now.
19:52 - Might be a stretch but Chris mirroring Ken dusting off the grass from his hands is actually kinda cute. Just shows how nervous he actually was and how much in awe he must've been that entire shoot. Hell, I probably would be shitting myself if I was put in that situation to say the least.
People need a purpose in life, that's why so many charity organizations can exist where people only get paid in food and shelter to help others. Having a hobby where you help others is the most satisfying kind.
Ken seems really chill and all the stuff he's done to support this natural disaster's relief is very commendable, but my biggest take away from this video was "What a fool"
It's interesting that when Ken-san is taking about himself and Japan, he speaks Japanese, but when he's talking about his western roles he sometimes switches to English. Also, extra thumbs up for praising Tampopo!
I think it has more to do with him not actually speaking English as fluently as everyone thinks, and being unable to express everything he wants to in English. On the Abroad in Japan podcast Chris mentioned that Ken's English wasn't as good as he thought it would be and chalked it up to him having to just memorize lines phonetically for his western films, like Zhang Ziyi did in her early films
@@polygon2745 I'm sure that's why he speaks Japanese when talking about himself; the amount of English and the way which language he uses is roughly divided by subject is what I find interesting. It's like thinking about Hollywood automatically puts him in a mindset where he has to use English
A year before this happened I was in the Chile Earthquake and I can tell you that what Ken Watanabe has done is more than just helped them build back the town. The sense of normalcy that he has helped to provide the town is probably his greatest gift to them. Great video, as always.
I could feel the nervous excitement Chris had when he was about to enter the cafe and Ken Watanabe just casually opens the door to greet him like he would any of his friends or guests! Congratulations Chris!!! 🥳
WHAT THE WHAT??? i am over 100 years old and still making youtub videos? oh yeah baby. why? because i am the ultimate youtuber. woo woo woo you know it dear chris
You can really tell how much Chris respects Ken Watanabe. Being called a “fool” from him was a great honor for Chris I believe. Such wholesome content ! Keep up the good work !
I’d being binging your whole content in the last 72 hours, and I’m wheezing like a schoolgirl after finding this beautiful encounter. Thank @abroadinjapan team Iconic, Ken 🙌👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 what a present.
I like this style of casual interview, no massive production, not inside a million dollar studio, no laughing soundtrack, just 2 men having a stroll in a small town.
It warms my heart to see a place that comes together to help each other without asking for anything in return. In America where I'm from, there are parts of New Orleans still in complete disrepair from hurricane Katrina despite being almost 20 years ago.
Sure, Chris's achievement is amazing and it's wonderful to see how far a RUclipsr can go as a celebrity these days. But for me, the best thing about this video was Ken Watanabe himself. His dedication to helping the town is both wonderful and moving to see. Yeah, he downplayed it as a "hobby", but for me that came across more like modesty than anything else. Great guy.
Imagine deciding to go and live in Japan for a few years, and ending up visiting some of the most awe-inspiring places in the world, and spending time with other incredible people like Ken Watababe. And along the way, sharing the whole experience with us on here. Thanks, Chris.
I have enjoyed Abroad in Japan and his quirky humor. When I saw the title I first thought it was a joke, but what a nice surprise. As I looked up Ken’s background, I see he has suffered some serious health challenges. Perhaps that explains his groundedness and kindness. He realizes fame doesn’t really mean all that much in the end. A great video. Thank you.
It's hard for me to comment anywhere, but as a person who grew up with Japanese entertainment, I could not lose this opportunity. Ken is a legend and an amazing person, hearing his story about helping people after the disaster made me shed a tear. Thank you so much for your hard work Chris, this is truly an epic moment for you and all of us!

My Mother is from Tome, which is about a 30 minutes drive from Kesennuma. When the earthquake and tsunami happened, we were all devastated. The whole industry in the area was destroyed, and combined with population drop and people moving to the big cities, it's been a difficult recovery process. But slowly I think the region is starting to rebuild. There's still a long way to go, but I think that media attention and people's drive to rebuild what was destroyed has really helped. I really appreciate your videos on the Tohoku region as a whole, as I think that internationally it doesn't get enough attention. I'm glad that more people will learn about how great the Tohoku region can be, especially northern Miyagi.
It's nice to see a different side of Ken Watanabe. His humility is extremely endearing and I must comment what an amazing human being he is. When we look back in his life in a few decades, his community and humanitarian work will be his crowning glory of his life, not his super stardom in Hollywood's media. Thanks for your part in trying to restore faith in humanity, Ken.
Chris is an role model, he’s got some of the best production values on the website and provides amazing content but he’s also very humble about his success and is comfortable in being himself.
I feel genuinely, so happy for Chris that he was able to make his dream come true. You could his excitement and the effort that he put in. I just love this. Easily my favourite British person. Sorry Connor.
Really thoughtful, inspiring, and entertaining videos of Japan, you're living my dream. The biking trips are especially incredible. Thanks and keep up the great work! Wishing you all the best.
Thank you so much for the kind words and support Erik! Lots of videos planned after this cycle is over - there’s a good chance we’ll put this towards the next encounter with Ken! All the best 🙏
When Ken talked of the whole town being quiet after the disaster, I felt that. I went to New Orleans after Katrina a bunch of times to help family clean up and weeks after the flood it was silent just like that. No birds chirping, no dogs barking, no traffic sounds, just silence. It's surreal. Ken's a great guy for helping that community! And Chris is a great guy for taking time off the funny videos to do serious documentaries about places affected by the tsunami!
How cool is this guy.. i always loved him as an actor but i think i have never seen an actor being this cool and down to earth. Truely your typical local coffeeshop owner that greets you with a smile
This was such a joy to watch. Ken's just a guy, a guy with a warm heart and he's doing what he can to be and make others happy. Thank you for making this Chris, loved every second.
I don't know why but I almost teared up by the end. The narrative around this video is very beautiful, almost felt like a culmination of the development of both Chris & the channel over the years. Even if it's just a dream, I hope it never ends
I got strangely emotional there at the end, was not expecting that. Chris, great job all in all - you hit a major checkpoint in your goals, and this is nothing to sneeze at. I wish you the best in whatever your future holds.
That makes the two of us! I think it was JUST the idea that this might be the end of the beauty of Abroad in Japan mixed with Chris finally achieving a big dream that hit double hard.
Count one more, I teared up a little bit out of happiness at that part. The way the song at the end went gradually all out made that ending such an emotional one.
He is a present character in all the memorable movies I have ever watched and enjoyed. It was such a beautiful and selfless idea to come up with a cafe in a place that has suffered much to tragedy. Even after his passing there will be people out there meeting, eating and laughing with their friends and future loved ones and this is kind of poetic.
This documentary means a lot to Chris, as much as it means to the townsfolks. Amazing episode and it is worth the wait to finally watch this quality production.
I have always loved Ken Watanabe, but this. Yeah. This right here. He helps restore my faith in humanity. I am so glad you got to meet him, and show the rest of us this side of him! Thank you.
He is already in Amazon prime and got hate for the Cat Nation video 😭 I hope those people watch another documentaries from Chris so they will know the real quality of Chris's works
I never realized how truly amazing Ken Watanabe is! His connection with the locals is so heartwarming and he is very inspiring. If every person thought about what they could do to help or improve, no matter how small it is, we could change the world! Amazing video Chris as always, and sad to see you leaving Japan lol ; )
The b roll, the cuts, the shot construction, the music, the through lines, all of them superb! You really blew it out of the water with the editing and directing. This was so well done. Excellent job Chris.
I agree! I wish I knew the title of the music used at the very beginning and at the end of the video. I've tried using apps like Shazam but they didn't work
I'm honestly impressed by seeing how humble Ken Watanabe is, like he knows how famous he is but still just lives life like a normal person, sometimes even getting behind the workforce and helping out in his own restaurant!
I was a freshman in college just getting into anime and Japanese culture and this really hit me hard watching it from the US. I remember donating what little money I had to support the first aid in Japan. It's incredible to hear Ken's first-hand experience while he was actually there. I completely understand that feeling of trying to figure out what you can do to help.
I would like to say my appreciations for the music choice in this video Chris. I believe it's there to provide feelings of nostalgia and hope, and it sure did it's job for me. Cheers to this beautiful video.

I think it's a sign of approval....
When somebody says to you "バカだね” with a smile on their face, you know they like you. This was a fantastic video and your sincerity and honesty throughout was great and your portrayal of Ken Watanabe absolutely wonderful.
I actually laughed out loud at that. Put a smile on my face.
To those still learning, he's talking about 23:09 "馬鹿だね"
馬鹿 is the kanji for "baka", or "fool".
だね is the hiragana for "da ne?" which is pretty much a rhetorical "Right?"

Ken Watanabe seems like a very down-to-earth kind person. I like him now then before because he's not only a great actor, but he's also a genuinely nice person.
"I'm not a big star in Japan. I'm an actor. I have a very normal life. Four days a week, I cook at home. A star doesn't do that."
But for sure he is a fighter and surviver, battled myeloid leukemia and stomach cancer.
The other side of Ken Watanabe is that he cheated on his 1st marriage and 2nd marriage multiple times and abandoned his 2 children from the 1st marriage.
and he isnt looking so old at all despite his age probably 60+yrs old
Hats off! What a wonderful documentary on Watanabe and his relation to Kesennuma!
Chris even managed to hold back his comedy sarcasm, which shows how much he was concentrating! 👍

At first I wanted chris to go to other places to see his take, but I realized that we wont be seeing Natsuki anymore. Now i dont want him leave.
To spend a decade rebuilding a town any way he can, truly as his friend put it 'Samurai'. Great content, great channel.
19:52 - Might be a stretch but Chris mirroring Ken dusting off the grass from his hands is actually kinda cute. Just shows how nervous he actually was and how much in awe he must've been that entire shoot. Hell, I probably would be shitting myself if I was put in that situation to say the least.
People like Ken are literally treasures. The way he immerse himself to the recover of the town is just awe-inspiring ❤️

Ken seems really chill and all the stuff he's done to support this natural disaster's relief is very commendable, but my biggest take away from this video was "What a fool"
Yeah that was so wonderfully wholesome. Like an older uncle or father softly reprimanding their nephew/son.
The change in the town over ten years is incredible, when you look back to what March 11th left in its wake.. and Ken, what a lovely guy!
The wait is finally over. Congrats to Chris for achieving this significant milestone. And we're all here for it.
This is a great event, a culmination of Chris’s work.
@we will do it I'm sick of spammers. If you want people to watch your video make a better content
_Tampopo_ was my ish!

Same. It seems so chill while still being informative
I love how nervous Chris was, he even showed up in a suit to meet his idol.
Meanwhile, Mr. Ken just wore casual clothes like most fishermen.
It warms my heart to see a place that comes together to help each other without asking for anything in return. In America where I'm from, there are parts of New Orleans still in complete disrepair from hurricane Katrina despite being almost 20 years ago.
This is arguably Chris's biggest W yet. So happy for him. And that Inception ending really caught me off guard. Brilliant, brilliant video.
Yeah, the ending couldn´t have been more perfect ❣❣❣

This is crazy. I remember Natsuki acting like Ken Watanabe and here we are, interviewing the man himself. Great video as always, Chris.

I don't know why but I almost teared up by the end. The narrative around this video is very beautiful, almost felt like a culmination of the development of both Chris & the channel over the years. Even if it's just a dream, I hope it never ends

That makes the two of us! I think it was JUST the idea that this might be the end of the beauty of Abroad in Japan mixed with Chris finally achieving a big dream that hit double hard.
