All-New Porsche 911 (992) GT3 RS Review: Fast, but is it Fun? | Henry Catchpole - The Driver’s Seat

  • The new, 992 generation of Porsche’s GT3 RS is the most extreme, ever. Henry Catchpole gets behind the wheel of this latest 911 on track at Silverstone during the international launch and is understandably blown away by the speed it is capable of delivering. It certainly lives up to its Rennsport name. But he has a question: Is it fun as well as fast?
    In this episode of The Driver’s Seat, we look at the latest GT3 RS’s glorious naturally aspirated flat-six engine, the wild aerodynamics, the lightweight Weissach pack and then, perhaps most interestingly of all, the adjustability. Because in this new car you can easily tweak and tune the set up to your heart’s content. You can adjust differential settings, traction control, stability control and the dampers all from behind the wheel.
    That last topic is where the mountain bike comes in. To help explain some of the basics of the suspension Henry decided to head to the woods with a YT Industries Capra, complete with Flight Attendant (that’s a fancy suspension system not someone who serves a meal on a Boeing).
    Finally we delve into some of the more technical aspects of setting up the car for a circuit like the Nurburgring Nordschleife with none other than Jörg Bergmeister. A Winner at both Le Mans and Daytona, Jörg then gives Henry a passenger lap to demonstrate just what 860kg/1900lbs of downforce (combined with a lot of talent and experience) can do through high-speed bends like Maggots and Becketts or braking into Brooklands.
    We hope you enjoy the film. If you’d like us to make a video with the GT3 RS on the road or perhaps compare it to a GT4 RS, then let us know in the comments down below.

      And in a 911 entry speed is supposed to be the slowest point of the corner.... The way the car wants to oversteer in the corner entries on braking is sign you're at the limit in a 911, the guy was absolutely thrashing the car

    • @nnietee
      @nnietee Год назад +17

      @@10cent_not50 Of course it's confident, hence the speed at which he enters corner. But, especially after 15:09 you can still see typical 911 being at the limit : you brake the latest possible so you're still slowing hard at corner entry and the heavy tail acts as a ballast and want to transform the car into a pendulum, that's why he looks like he is wrestling the steering wheel when decelarating in the corner. Then at corner exit when applying throttle the weight shift back to the rear and suddenly the car becomes much more stable again. That's why we say 911 is at its slowest when entering a corner : you are supposed to brake earlier while you're straight, enter the corner slow, and then the weight at the back allows you to go hard on the throttle super early and get out of the corner like a bullet without oversteer.

      Well you can drive any car you want during a trackday without a racing licence. An older cup would give more for much less money overall. Maybe this is also superb on the road but I doubt it. The current GT3 is already way to much for the road. You have to go so fast to feel any difference to a GTS and to do so you have to find the perfect road with the perfect conditions and being yourself pretty good behind the wheel. You can only justify those cars from an emotional point not with any logic.

      This is beyond a GT3 race car, it produces the same downforce while having less drag due to active aero and drs, plus adjustable diff n suspension through the steering. This isnt limited by the rules of GT3 its free to be w.e it wants. Plus it has a whole interior, its street legal and its daily drivable. So not only is it at the level of a GT3 car on track but it goes beyond by having a interior and being street legal.

      This is where I always question the purpose of this car other than to fulfill the childish dreams of people who have come into some money, peacocks, or the collectors. At a certain point, you have to consider a Cup car. Blurring the line so much between street and track just seems like there has to be a point where you'd be better off with an S, GTS, or Turbo and a Cup car. Or just throw your money at a dealership like Park Place and they'll have you ready to go in a race-prepped car with spares, a crew, and transportation. Don't get em wrong. I love it, but the market for it is just so weird outside of people that prospect and people that buy cars like the average person does a pair of pants. Admittedly, the child in me would be tempted as well though.

    Henry was speechless and rightfully so. What an amazing video of an amazing car. Porsche always seem to hit it out of the park. With every new model of GT3/GT3 RS for example, they just do it better and better without needing huge horsepower gains. What a thing this is!

    Will be interesting to see which setting owners choose for the “leave in garage to keep miles down” use many of these cars will see.

    Henry, you’re absolutely right a mountain bike is the best tool to learn the function of suspension & damping. I’m glad you used this example.

    I hope every one made gets driven regularly on track.

    Porsche owner and enthusiast for life because Porsche has the passion and vision to make cars like these. They leave you in awe and speechless when you really begin to push them hard. Porsche always has a way of recruiting some of the most respected drivers to showcase their incredible machines. I also use Hagerty insurance. 2 great companies that I am proud to be a part of because they just get what car enthusiasts really want! Porsche + Hagerty. Keep up the great work. Henry nailed it with this one and so glad to see you on Hagerty.
