Sup bro. I just applied to SIU Unlicensed Apprenticeship Program had my interview and math and English reading tests. Today . Passed and interviewed. Just praying I get accepted to go to Piney Point. I'm confident I will make it and look forward to it.
What were the classes about and like? Just wanted to get like a detailed answer, its been a while since a went back to school so im a little worried academically that i wont be able to keep up.
just got accepted into phase two of admission! the only thing I have left to get is my MMC. Your videos gave me the information I needed to make the decision. Thank you for all of your advice!
@@solidshady I got it 3 months ago, I'm really excited. Did I say I had to wait 1 year on the waiting list. List is very long now. you were lucky if you got in quick.
First 3 months you won’t make any money. So if you have $500 a month in bills I personally would double if it was me. But 2nd phase you’ll make money. 3rd phase is a month with no money. Then 4th phase is a full tour on a ship.
I don't share a room. I can't speak for every ship/company/union though. There will be more videos soon and a little tour of my room on the ship will be revealed.
I'm just down the road from siu piney point, I have a few questions: I want to become a professional bodybuilder, I take training very seriously. During all the phases, is there free time during the day to go to the gym on the boat/or at school? I just need a minimum of 90 minutes a day, 120 minutes would be optimal If there is a gym in the school, is it good? Is there a gym on the vessels during the phases? And can you bring personal belongings? If so what are you limited to? I'm ready to sign up in seconds, but this is the make or break deal for me
Yes to all. The Campus gym is pretty set up. Lots of room and everything you’ll need. Evening’s after 6-9 is basically all your own time except when your doing time in the galley you might not be free till 7 or 8? But there’s always time to get a pump. Ship gyms vary but almost all have some sort of gym. You can bring whatever you want in your bags (besides obvious things you can’t fly with) and on that as well you will have to pay for oversized bags of your trying to bring dumbbells in your bag! 😂 but most all ships will have weights.
@@northwestsailor526 Thank you very much! Lastly can you call ahead and ask to see if there is one on a ship? You said most, I just wanna make sure I can access information like that before I take contracts
@@longjohn8672 I’m nearly positive the contracts between the unions and the ships/company’s requires some type of gym. So you can ask to look at the contracts to find out.
Are there ways that one could study for the tests before entering the program? The information that they will be teaching you must be out there some where. Are the tests difficult?
Do you have any free time to call or talk to ur loved ones while ur in the first phase? My boyfriend just started and I dont really know what to expect.
Yes, of course only on your own time. I wouldn’t suggest during class hours or morning/evening colors. Raising and lowering of the flag. I got caught and had a few days of cleaning duties.
Great question. There isn’t any way of getting out of the sea time. There are ways to shorten the amount of actual sea time you need. Some tugs that do 12 hour days are recognized as 1 + 1/2 day at sea. And come class courses count as half days as well.
No saluting or asking permission. I know there’s medications for IBS and as well just let the Bosun know you have IBS so he/she doesn’t assume your just trying to get outta work and hide in the bathroom like some people do..
i cant do pushups or pullups but can run a 5k in 30minutes and deadlift 300lbs. is there any test where you have to do stuff like that like in the military? thanks Also how hard are the tests is it math related at all or just things like knots vocabulary ect?
Well this isn’t the military and no you don’t have to be an athletes or be too physically fit to join the program. There is small test to see if you’re physically capable . Like balancing on one foot...
Test are always on Fridays. If you fail they give you the weekend and you have 1 chance at a retake the following Monday. If you fail the retake then your sent home and can re-apply into the program 6 months later where you’ll be required to start all over. From the beginning...
i have a question about the physical aspect? do you have to know how to run fast? do push-ups?situps,pull ups so i can prepare? If i go to the school w/o knowing how to do them will i get sent home?
You should be preparing yourself if you can’t do at least 1 push up/pull up/sit up. But I’ll say there was some hefty hefty boys and gals in the program that were in the same situation.
1-3 months/2-3 months/3-month and a half/4-4 months/ 5- month and a half. Mattering when classes are scheduled between phases 2/3/4/5 you can be home for a week or a month.
Hey I love your videos and you really push me more to do the program keep it up bro. I just have One question I’m confused on how long does this program take Because I was watching one girl talk about her experience at Piney point and she said the program took four months But then I heard you say a year I thought.
It took me a year and half with a month/month and a half breaks I chose to do. If I didn’t take the breaks I would’ve been done with the program in about 14 months. They HAD a fast track program for the steward/kitchen department for a little while when the position were needed and I know that took about 4 months. But then they had to do 180/200 days before they could upgrade. If you wanna work in the kitchen the fast track may or may not still be available.

Also, can i bring a laptop or tablet during 1st and 2nd phase? I've been to boot camp and i recall them throwing our belongings around and kicking it everywhere ? will it be like that? i dont wanna break my computer.
Contact admissions. They have a shuttle bus that goes to the airport 1/2 days out of the week. You’ll be in control of your bags and belongings at all times.

I’m happy to help! I was questioned about the programs authenticity myself and was hesitant till the moment I got to the piney point campus. Good luck in the program!
Hey great information. I'm leaving for phase 1 of the program July 12. My question is what items can I bring besides uniforms and required items. Examples, civilian clothes, protein powder, supplements, cigarettes ect..? Also do they search your bags once you get there?
Yes to all of your questions. If you bring a knife they’ll take it until you leave for phase 2. Bring as much tobacco as you can cuz unless you have someone to send it too you there won’t be any way of buying it. And Phase 1 also turns lots of kids into smokers for some reason so bet on beggars.
Shit school. It's a Bootcamp. Totally. The drop-out rate has to be high. Many graduate, i know. I went to it and dropped out. I stayed for 3 months. I didn't even need to go to the stupid school. MSC hired me 2 years later. Entry-level.

Hey man, at SIU apprenticeship will they shave your head? Or make you shave your head? Thanks in advance 😁
If you show up with a clean military style hair cut you might get away with it. If a lot of your class shows up with long hair you may all get buzzed.
