I just got stcw endorsement and trying to join SIU but have been told is not enough..do I need a different endorsement ?

In the end,you will still be a grunt chipping rust and mixing paint while the guys watching from the wheel house are academy grads, you cant get your time and study for a 3 2 l or masrters license unless the hrs are working the job, ( like 3rd mate) some adamy class room time counts as sea time, 3rd mates take an everage of 10 yrs to reach Master, try it with SIU and it would be closer to 16- 17 yrs (thats for say a😮 500 ton Master) if you want a true unlimited weight, all oceans, Captains lisence, you will 99% of the time need a 4yr at an academy degree, and no part of wiping or chipping/ painting will be on that test.working on a ship and commanding a ship are 2 very different paths, start out right if want command.

In the end you will make WAY more money through the Academy. It all depends on how much you want your career total to be. People get loans for political science majors just to work at Starbucks. Cal Maritime Keelhaulers ⚓️

I'm 32. I have an associates degree but not a bachelors. SIU or CAL Maritime Academy for 4 years? Or would it be for 2 years? I'm stuck at an impasse, someone help! I'm debt free/unemployed with no trustfund to back me. What would yall do?

Can you please please answer this question. For the SIU is there a age cap. So I am an older person older than 40 years old. I was wondering if older people going to The apprentice program also. I'm not talking about piney point.

Is it possible to get a job on a ship as an ordinary seaman without doing the apprenticship? If you did the MMC and STCW training yourself?

A Qualified Member of the Engineering Department (QMED) is the senior most rating in the engine room of a ship. QMED is to the engineering department what the AB is to the Deck Department. The Coast Guard defines a QMED qualified member of the engine department as any person below officer and above the rating of wiper in the engineering department. The QMED performs a variety of tasks in the engine room, fire-room, machine shop, steering-engine room and more. QMED is also the entry level for any merchant marine Engineering Officers License. QMED’s are not restricted by the type or size of the vessel and your area of expertise will define your rating. Each QMED rating must be endorsed separately, unless one qualifies for all QMED ratings. The duties of QMED include but not limited to - inspection of equipment such as pumps, turbines, distilling plants, and condensers; lubrication and maintenance of generators, steering systems, lifeboats, and sewage disposal systems; cleaning and restoration of tools and other equipment.

The Coast Guard defines a QMED qualified member of the engine department as any person below officer and above the rating of wiper in the engineering department. The QMED performs a variety of tasks in the engine room, fire-room, machine shop, steering-engine room and more.

Job Purpose/Summary: The wiper/gateman performs a number of physical tasks to assist in the maintenance and operation of the main power plant and auxiliary machinery above and below decks and in the unloading of cargo. Essential and Major Duties: Opens and closes the gates during the unloading of cargo Assists in loading and unloading of engine room supplies Shovels spillage back onto conveyor belt in event of spill Breaks cargo jams with a sledgehammer Hoses down tunnels to clean away cargo residue Performs general conveyor maintenance such as greasing, oiling, replacing bearings, and changing rollers General engine room and tunnels maintenance such as painting, cleaning, and chipping. Makes rounds and cleans up oil leaks as needed Lifts heavy objects and rigs and uses a chain fall to position massive engine equipment Assists with bunkering of the vessel Other Functions: Other maintenance and housekeeping tasks as assigned

The engine department is based on a seniority system. This means that individuals that are being hired as QMED's or Oilers can also be required to work in Wiper/Gateman positions.

Required Qualifications: - Must hold the following Merchant Mariner Credentials: Qualified Member of the Engine Department (QMED) Ordinary Seaman Wiper -Must hold a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) -Must be willing to live 7 days a week in a remote environment with limited access to medical supplies and medical personnel - Maintain licenses and qualifications as required by regulation, both current and future -Maintain good health in compliance with USCG NVIC 04-08 including US Coast Guard vision and hearing requirements -Must have written and verbal command of the English language.

Depending on your Hall, your Port Agent will guide you through the process. After I sent in my app, I got an email from the local Agent here, had me come in for an interview and the tests, then I got the email from the School with all the info they needed. I paid the medical fee to the Hall and the Agent set me up to schedule my medical.

I am at phase 2 now, got my TWIC, passport, and did my physical exam. I have an appt on the 8th of May to get a supplemental doc filled out, then I can get the MMC
