Depending on your Hall, your Port Agent will guide you through the process. After I sent in my app, I got an email from the local Agent here, had me come in for an interview and the tests, then I got the email from the School with all the info they needed. I paid the medical fee to the Hall and the Agent set me up to schedule my medical.
Hopefully this helps someone out who is trying to get things together for their process. I went into the post office today thinking i could just get a photo taken and apply for my passport. Boy was i wrong, my appointment for the next time i can try is on april 1st, a month away! Thats a month away..plus wait time. Not sure with everything going on and the lockdown and all but the passport process used to have an option of paying this expedite fee and I got my passport within a month. Maybe look into that if you're in a hurry.

I'm currently trying to do step 2 before step 1. However, unless I'm mistaken, in order to get an MMC they require proof of enrollment in a school before they can issue the credentials. How did you get around this? And secondly, did you have to upgrade your MMC before Phase 4?
I didn’t have to require any proof of enrollment to a school before getting my MMC and it shouldn’t be unless IM mistaken. I had my MMC for 6 months before being accepted into siu or even have done any basic classes. Once your in the program they basically hold your hand all the way until you’ve upgraded. They send in the class completion certificates to the coast guard for you.
Thanks for the great videos. They are very instructive. I am seriously considering applying for the apprenticeship program but I do have a concern. What happens if I go through the process and spend all the money to complete step 2 but I don't get accepted?
The SIU apprentice program isn’t the only option. You can also pay out of pocket for your basic STCW course (mattering on your location anywhere from 600-1800$) then just pay the $500 initiation fee to join the SIU as a C-book seniority entry level. If the maritime industry is what you want to try then you’ll need process 2 of the application done regardless of the apprenticeship program. And whatever your first job is with your MMC union or not will pay the money back instantly.
Hi, thank you for the information. I live in El Paso TX. I did 6 years active duty in the U.S. Navy and 24 years as a Navy reservist. I completed a bachelor's degree from the University of Texas at El Paso. Part of my curriculum included english, writing, and calculus. I would like to have that placement reading and math exam waived since I would probably be taking it in Houston TX. Do you believe it is possible to do so?
Apart of the program will be working on ships. There’s no tuition if your accepted just the cost of a plane ticket and CG test fees. Along with uniforms for the program. The siu has a cost breakdown for the program on its website.
Big advantages are it’s the cheapest option and the SIU really walks you through the whole process of getting into the industry and what you have to do exactly. The only disadvantage is the process can take a little longer than paying out of pocket for the classes. BUT when you pay out of pocket your still trying to piece together all the information about getting started and unless you have someone telling you what to do it can be a headache. It took me a year and a half of getting all my documents and figuring out what I needed because I had no one to look to. And there wasn’t any RUclips videos on how to get into the industry when I started.
Why would they make you get your MMC ahead of time when you don't have the courses to get a label of OS on it, and if you have to get the courses ahead of time from someone else to to get the OS qualification, what's the point of going through them? What do I need for OS?
You don’t need anything to get your O.S. You just apply for it when you apply for your MMC. Though you can’t sail without your basic STCWs. When you apply for your MMC you can select all 3 entry level positions Wiper/SA/O.S. They are not “certificate” positions and the Captain can switch you in and out of them if needed in different departments. An S.T.O.S is a certificate position which requires a RFPNW training course. If you have any more questions don’t hesitate.
Caleb White If you have none at all get your basic STCWs.. basic firefighting/basic water survival/basic safety training/etc. These are the actual course names you need certificates for. All the “basic” certificates you actually need to work on a ship.
So once you get accepted for school you just quit your jobs? That’d prolly be the hardest part, cause I got family depending on me 😞. I can’t be 13 weeks with no income If you gave me any suggestions I would really appreciate it
Hey man, I'm in the same situation as you are. My wife and I came up with a plan to save up 3 months expenses and supliment with our tax return. we are doing it for our family. Great rewards never comes without great sacrifices. I hope I see you at SIU. 👍
I started to write the suggestion/ explanation and then realized ill just make a bonus video sometime this week to help this out. I feel like this is one of the situations a lot of people come into and I just haven't been clear on it.
Any employer you’ve had, a leader of any volunteer work you’ve done. I even used my football coach from high school and I was 2 years out of high school!
I have almost completed step 2. I have my TWIC, Passport, MMC with the medical certificate and food handlers permit. I also have my dental letter. The only thing I have left to do is to obtain the drug test/benzene test at a SIU Hall. I called my closet hall and they said that I have to apply and get accepted first. What did you do when you came to this last step? Should I just apply and wait to get accepted? I’m trying to have everything so they take me right away.
Yes. Apply in and once you get accepted take the test. Otherwise they might ask you to take the drug/benzene test again before you go in. It sounds like you've followed the same path I did and that's awesome. Things will go smoothly once you're accepted if you already have all your documents.
Thank you for making these videos. They have been very helpful. I got an email today from admissions telling me to go to the New Jersey Hall to take the reading and math test. I hope accepted. I am very excited to get into this field
Best to stay clean. You’ll have to take probably 2/3 drug test a year. You might have a window if your taking a long vacation but it’s not worth it. As soon as you step foot on a ship they can random you. It’s happened to me 2 times. Got a random test the 2nd day on the ship and another time a week after being on the ship.
You don’t need any sea time to get your MMC. You do need your MMC before the apprenticeship. The point of the apprenticeship program is all the free training you need to be able to work on the ships. Your stcws, tanker assist, govt. vessels classes. If you didn’t have your MMC before the apprenticeship they’d be giving you free training classes for a book you don’t even have to put the certificates into.
Hey did you have any trouble getting your dental letter? I have everything done but that and they told me to get it done when I can. Have 2 small cavities I have to get fixed but it may be a month. Guess i'm not on the waiting list til that's done.
I had my wisdoms pulled just in case when I was going in but that won’t matter. You’ll want to get the cavities done of course. Then just tell your dentist you’ll be on a ship in the next few months and you need a signed letter saying your teeth will be perfectly healthy for the next year.
@@northwestsailor526 ah, yeah i got the letter and sent it but the SIU nurse said i needed to get those cavities fixed and send another one. Was wondering if that means im not on the waiting list

Yes of course, its only a placement test. If you bombed it the apprenticeship program will require you to be in study hall after class to make sure you stay up with the rest of the class.
It’s been awhile man. There’s all the simple adding/subtracting/dividing. The hardest for me was the fractions because I had forgot how to divide fractions. Just remember, if you completely bomb the placement test it just requires you take study hall after the usual classes which is a bonus. I wasn’t required to do study hall but I went everyday to pick up the extra study material.
🤦 Maybe I wasn’t clear. The SiU apprenticeship program will not hold any tuition/student loan debt over you unlike going to a college for other learning. The program is not going to pay for your previous debt...
Hello good morning. Im just going to ask about MMC on how to acquire it, and what’s the process and requirements on applying for an MMC? Would you do a video on how to apply for one?
Thank you for the great idea! I’ll stick the video up sometime soon. Until then just look up “how to apply for an MMC”. First thing to pop up should be the coast guard website that lays out the checklist for you. I printed all the forms out myself and still drove 2 hours to the nearest coast guard REC (regional exam center) to speak to someone about the process and they gave me all the forms and talked me through it.
Alright thanks man! And one more thing. Are you required to take an exam to acquire an MMC? And would you be able to send all the application forms via mail and email?
@@kairanmarcluntao2496 Its not required to take any test for your mmc. You can be dumb as nails and still get it. Ill leave a link or something in the description of the video you're asking for.
Self Building Sailor hello good morning. About the STCW med certificate do you need a physician for it to fill up some of the application form? Some of the forms seems to be needing a physician. Im just asking you this to make sure. Thank you
@patrick suazo DO NOT worry about the reading test. “That cat jumped over the tree.” What’d the cat jump over? Obviously it’ll be more in depth on a different topic but that’s the best example I have.
As far as I know the program/Paul Haul center for maritime training is on a skeleton crew of instructors and has delayed new course dates for both current union members and new program applicants until things smooth over. If your looking to apply for the apprenticeship program I wouldn’t wait regardless of any circumstances.
Northwest Sailor I think it’s best for me to wait before I apply because now it’s even harder to get all the things I need and idk if the 90 day rule still applies.
I’m a Copenhagen guy myself. I’m assuming you asking because of the pre dental check before the program. All it is, is having your local dentist write you a letter saying you won’t need any teeth work done in the near future. Have a routine check up get some teeth pulled if needed and get any cavities squared away. That’s it!
Yes. Clean cut. There was only one guy I knew with dreads that the administration fought against but he had legitimate religious reasons that he was able to prove.
hey im trying to do step two before step one but am having trouble trying to figure out everything I need for the MMC and STCW can you tell me what exactly I need to do and what forms I need to fill out or make a video on it because im really having trouble with getting everything together
I realized I was kinda vague. Currently can’t publish videos my current internet situation is very slow. Search “Apply for MMC” and the first website to pop up should be the Coast Guard website with a checklist of all the paperwork you need and links to the applications you can print out. As soon as I can upload a video helping explain I will but it’ll be awhile. Hope that helps!
Paul C Yeah if you read the 2 forms (K) and (K/E) you’ll want to fill out CG-719(K) which will fulfill STCW for watchstanding in either department. Form(K/E) is for entry level not standing watches.
Matters the crime from what I’ve been told. And then on top you’d have to get whatever you did waived by the coast guard mattering on the offense. If it’s that serious I’m sure you’d know but there’s no harm in going for the waiver.
what’s up man, i’m currently in canada, applying to the unlicensed apprenticeship program canada based as well but i still haven’t heard from the program coordinator. I submitted all the required paper works for step 1 but they haven’t schedule me a reading and math test. i’ve been waiting for three months now. is there any thing i can do at this point? i’d really appreciate if you could give me any suggestions thank you!
They don’t schedule you for the reading and math. YOU have to contact the nearest union hall and schedule the tests there. Call them up, tell them you’ve applied in the program and want to come down to take the reading/math test. At least that’s what I did.
Self Building Sailor I did call them up. I was told that they’re the ones who’s going to schedule the reading and math test. and they just keep telling me to “call after two months if nothing comes up” and it already happened twice. I called them today and they said the same thing to call two months from now. I was really hoping i can do something about it other than just keep on waiting for another two months and just keep on pushing the dates. Whats the best thing i could do, Reapply or just keep on waiting?
kairan marc luntao Can’t say then bud. I called my local union hall and had to set up a time to go in. Sorry I wasn’t able to get to this comment sooner. It never got pushed to my new notifications.
Don’t stress about the placement test. It only places you in after class study hall if you get a low score. Which in turn is just a mandatory bonus hour of study. Seriously don’t stress it.
Just like any job you can’t use your phone while your working. Some mates will allow headphones during chipping jobs. There isn’t any cell service at sea.. most ships have WiFi now. But it’s never good enough to stream videos. Usually just enough to text/ google something and barely good enough for social media platforms.
That’s a great question. If you’ve never worked I’m assuming your young.. you can get recommendation letters from teachers , sport coaches , or anyone outside of your family you’ve done work/volunteer service for.
I sent in my essay while filling out the application and I sent a picture of myself and they sent an email that said thank you and two recommendation letters now what do I do?
I’m assuming you already have your MMC and TWIC card. Find your local SIU union hall and schedule a time to take the math and reading placement test. Let me know if that was the answer you were looking for. Good luck!
@@northwestsailor526 ok cool.. I'm going to go for this.. I already have twic and some medical stuff done due to being in oil and gas... But the stcw is that something taken prior to entering or during class
Nathan Drake A letter of recommendation from your current employer and otherwise prior/previous employer if your currently unemployed and applying into the program. The more employer recommendations the better.
That’s a good question. The only reason they want your teeth checked and cleared before the program is because you won’t be able to leave the campus. Basically your dentist just has to say your teeth won’t need to be looked at or worked on for a minimum of 6 months. 3 months at school followed by 3 months on a ship.

Self Building Sailor hello good morning. About the STCW med certificate do you need a physician for it to fill up some of the application form? Some of the forms seems to be needing a physician. Im just asking you this to make sure. Thank you
@@kairanmarcluntao2496 YES. The medical certificate and drug screening have to be done by qualified physicians. Verify they're qualified before hand.
How difficult is it to be accepted into the SIU Apprentice program?
Can you provide me an example of the reading test so i can study please bro
@patrick suazo DO NOT worry about the reading test. “That cat jumped over the tree.” What’d the cat jump over? Obviously it’ll be more in depth on a different topic but that’s the best example I have.
Does a Serv-Saf certificate count as a foodhandlers permit?
Cute little pony! Uhhh not sure? Haha it sounds the same. The food handlers permit I got was online for $15 dollars. So it’s not a big deal.
@@northwestsailor526 the Serv-Saf is almost 200$ I think Ill go online. Thanks.
What would be some changes now getting into the program during this pandemic?
As far as I know the program/Paul Haul center for maritime training is on a skeleton crew of instructors and has delayed new course dates for both current union members and new program applicants until things smooth over. If your looking to apply for the apprenticeship program I wouldn’t wait regardless of any circumstances.
Northwest Sailor I think it’s best for me to wait before I apply because now it’s even harder to get all the things I need and idk if the 90 day rule still applies.
Elijah Diallo With everything going on you’ll most likely end up on a waiting list anyways. I’d suggest applying now.
Northwest Sailor I didn’t think about that. I will do that. Thanks for the helpful advice.
Awesome can you pay the program back when you start earning from work?
There’s no cost.
Hey ray, do you send in the physical mmc and twic or copies?
Sorry this is such a late reply. I’m sure you figured it out but the copies..
I have a question..my teeth are bad..I am a tobacco crewer..so anyway do you have advice..ty
I’m a Copenhagen guy myself. I’m assuming you asking because of the pre dental check before the program. All it is, is having your local dentist write you a letter saying you won’t need any teeth work done in the near future. Have a routine check up get some teeth pulled if needed and get any cavities squared away. That’s it!
@@northwestsailor526 thank you for your help Copenhagen satisfies..lol
This is all done electronically now right ?
It should be.. wasn’t 4 years ago when I applied. I’ll look into it, thanks.
Do they make you cut your dreads off if you have them btw thanks for your information
Yes.
Step 2 should just be obtaining your passport ,TWIC, MMC, and necessary physicals. You’ll get your STCW in the program. I’ll make a video when I can.
Hope that helps!
did you ever figure this out? i was accepted but don't know which CG-719 form to use
Paul C Yeah if you read the 2 forms (K) and (K/E) you’ll want to fill out CG-719(K) which will fulfill STCW for watchstanding in either department. Form(K/E) is for entry level not standing watches.
@@northwestsailor526 ah, so if im in the 2nd step of the application process for SIU i need the standard K version?
Hey brotha I appreciate the insight. Do they except felons? I've got some mixed messages on that
Matters the crime from what I’ve been told. And then on top you’d have to get whatever you did waived by the coast guard mattering on the offense. If it’s that serious I’m sure you’d know but there’s no harm in going for the waiver.
@@northwestsailor526 thanks man
I'm not a merchant marine but I have a twic card and they dont give twic cards to felons.
two-bit I received mine last week...but my conviction was also 9 years ago...keep grinding Zach
@@blankblank3442 my conviction is also old and gone.
what’s up man, i’m currently in canada, applying to the unlicensed apprenticeship program canada based as well but i still haven’t heard from the program coordinator.
And this is also a Canada based SIU
kairan marc luntao Can’t say then bud. I called my local union hall and had to set up a time to go in. Sorry I wasn’t able to get to this comment sooner. It never got pushed to my new notifications.
What if I haven’t worked before what do I do for the letter of recommendation I can have the other done but I have no prior work
Other than like the Uber eats door dash and instacart but no bosses
Community members, teachers, old coaches? Customers? Any of them can recommend you.
What’s the grade level of the placement test? And is there a practice session?
Don’t stress about the placement test. It only places you in after class study hall if you get a low score. Which in turn is just a mandatory bonus hour of study. Seriously don’t stress it.
@@northwestsailor526did you have to do that
Bro what about cell phone use and cell phone service out at sea ?
Just like any job you can’t use your phone while your working. Some mates will allow headphones during chipping jobs. There isn’t any cell service at sea.. most ships have WiFi now. But it’s never good enough to stream videos. Usually just enough to text/ google something and barely good enough for social media platforms.
On the letters of recommendation what if you haven’t worked for real ?
That’s a great question. If you’ve never worked I’m assuming your young.. you can get recommendation letters from teachers , sport coaches , or anyone outside of your family you’ve done work/volunteer service for.
I sent in my essay while filling out the application and I sent a picture of myself and they sent an email that said thank you and two recommendation letters now what do I do?
I’m assuming you already have your MMC and TWIC card. Find your local SIU union hall and schedule a time to take the math and reading placement test. Let me know if that was the answer you were looking for. Good luck!
The uscg exam is that something that I have to study for or is that medical exams
You don’t have to study for the medical exam. You will need to study for stcw credential exams.
@@northwestsailor526 is that once u get accepted or is that something prior to being accepted
@@bryantharts9010 Medical exam is needed before being accepted .
@@northwestsailor526 ok cool.. I'm going to go for this.. I already have twic and some medical stuff done due to being in oil and gas... But the stcw is that something taken prior to entering or during class
@@northwestsailor526 and Thx for reolying, your girlfriend is beautiful and this all seems cool ND fun..
What do you mean prior employer letter recommendation?
Nathan Drake A letter of recommendation from your current employer and otherwise prior/previous employer if your currently unemployed and applying into the program. The more employer recommendations the better.

Can I have braces ? Haven’t found an answer to that online.
That’s a good question. The only reason they want your teeth checked and cleared before the program is because you won’t be able to leave the campus. Basically your dentist just has to say your teeth won’t need to be looked at or worked on for a minimum of 6 months. 3 months at school followed by 3 months on a ship.
Hopefully they will, if not I’ll just remove them for the duration of the school program.
