  • I've owned a Warco 300/2 lathe for over 20 years but recently my time using it has increased. So my mind has turned to doing a few upgrades on it to make it a little more usable. This series of videos shows how I fitted both scales/read heads to the lathe and the mounting of the display unit.
I only went for the 5 micron scales as I think in my case that would be fine for the work I do on the lathe, that and the fact the 1 micron scales are harder to get in the UK without being shipped from abroad and are twice the price.
The DRO display unit cost me £87 and the scales were around £50 each.
Keep a look out for the other parts of this series and for the video where I shortened the scales length on the X axis.
The project is just about finished. I need to do a little more cable management then learn to how to use the DRO to its fullest extent. A follow-up video may be made!

Mike absolutely fanbloodytastic ,I can see you have a good supply of lovely alloy blocks ,try a spring tension affair on your cable management it’ll pull it out of the way going one way and expand to let it travel the other way just a thought ,I’ve got a similar Chester lathe which I hope to up grade this year to a lathe and separate milling machine and I think I’ll be looking at Warco because of spares availability great vid Mike stay safe 👍👨🏻‍🏭

Hi Paul, thanks for the great feedback. I might give it a go with the spring but at the mo the cables seem happy to move with the carriage. The mill is a bit limited on the lathe and a separate one like yours would be great. Good luck with your upgrade 👍🏽👍🏽
