    The Les Paul Classic is one of those really special models within Gibson's History that often gets stated as a 90s model. 1990, 1991, 1992 are the years to get before the silkscreen "Les Paul Model" changed into "Les Paul Classic" ... but it is often forgotten that the Les Paul Classic actually started in late 1989. Today, we document the 30th production number Les Paul Classic constructed in 1989.

    A Gibson standard and a custom came and went but my '91 Gibson Les Paul classic with a slight twist in the neck will forever stay... I played loads of guitars but nothing yet sounded or felt close to this beast. Thanks trogly for showing us the true quality and sound of these early classics.

      @@kennethobrien6537 i love my stock ceramic pickups they are very responsive and help me achieve the sound I want from 70s classic rock, 80s hard rock to 90s grunge. I use my classic with 100W Made in England Laney GH100L tube amp. I get my perfect sound from the amp setting and also by controlling the volume knob for the bridge pickup. Also I found adjusting the pickups height makes massive difference to the tone which many people tend to ignore. I bonded so much with my guitar over the years that I couldn't find any reasons for keeping the other Les Pauls in my collection. I find the classic easier and faster to play due to its neck which fits me perfectly.

    You flip the bridge around to give better intonation since the screws don't always reach the same in the extreme front as they do to the extreme back, looks like the guy forgot to also swap the bridge saddles or didn't bother.

    I traded in my 1990 Gibson, Les Paul 1960 reissue plus $1500 for a 1995 Pearl master customs MMX drum set. A super fine. decision. The classic was a good guitar. The neck was very thin. Sounded pretty good and not too heavy.

    From what I know working in radio and a few live gigs, long cable runs without some kind of buffer or DI box will mess with the sound. I wonder if that extra long lead on the bridge pickup is why it’s so “dark” sounding. (Cue all the metal guys running out “no don’t cut the bridge pickup lead!”)

    • @kentfranklin736
      @kentfranklin736 5 месяцев назад +2

      That wouldn't do much. It's probably 'dark' because these use 300k volume pots. We're used to 500k with humbuckers lately so most of our amps are EQ'd for that

    Dear Mr. Trogly, have you ever reviewed a Godin G series? I have 2 G1000's (a '93 for sure & '96 maybe??) and they sound great although one is oddly more powerful than the other. She just screams. You have to be on point when playing her. I originally planned to get the lot 1000-5000 but never pounced when I had opportunities. That is except for the mighty G5000. Very coveted and almost impossible to find. One of my dream guitars because Tommy "The Baron" Vetterli played a custom G5000 & a USA '88 Hamer Chaparral which I also wouldn't mind owning. He is one of my favorite players. Anyway just curious.

    This isn't going to a certain early childhood pop star would it? (It's tough to be a baby)

    Hi Trogly, I have a 1990 Classic with "TM" initials on the top (clearly visible), could this be a "Signed" Tom Murphy painted? If you are interested I would make a Video of the guitar for you. let me know and Thanks for your amazing videos.

      Cool! I’ve read that Tom did paint some of the early classics before the custom shop started as a separate entity in 1993.

      Because some dealers don't want to take on the responsibility of shipping overseas, possible damage, & HIGH ship/Insurance charges. So he does it for a courtesy & fee of course.

      International shipping is scary the first few times you do it and can have a lot of headaches. Most shops don't want to do it / educate buyers about import duties and taxes. Me... I've done it enough times, I find it fun and I like helping people get someone that was otherwise unobtainable for them. It isn't a cheap process, but it can be done!

    With replacement pups that haven’t been clearly identified aside from being ‘era correct’, not really a good example of what a stock one might sound like.

      It depends on how much cleaning is needed. I have seen him use the Gibson pump spray on the lighter stuff but a lot of people use stuff called Virtuoso or a similar product that will relieve light scratching and really bring everything to a high polish. Some even use certain high end automobile waxes and polishers. Many of them do well and are delicate enough to use on Nitro or poli without going ape poo with it. I stick to the stuff that's made for Nitro finishes like the virtuoso

    Always amazes me when you get these guitars in that are filthy. I would never sell an instrument without giving it a good cleaning. Just good practice.

  • @jlo7770
    @jlo7770 5 месяцев назад

    Yeah thats some really really rough workmanship on the tuners... i hope he got a good really good deal on that guitar since the head is essentially ruined without massive amounts of work and probably losing the serial number to refinish it.. it looks like a 3rd grader screwed those tuners down.
    I mean if it was a cheaper lp and its going to just be played/abused then he got a good guitar but ugh "we got a working set of tuners on it right now" doesnt invoke a tone of confidence.. i personally could be able to live with it knowing someone reamed a crooked 2nd hole but the crooked tuners cuz they screwed it down with their eyes closed is a bit much. Not to mention miss matched pickups it just doesnt give a lot of confidence, like i said hope he got a really good deal on it
