Unfortunately this was 8 years ago for me. That's probably enough time for many things to change.
That only works for small items. The Chinese have no place to put their money. Most people “invested” in real estate. Others bought stocks. Those “investments” lost their money. Others put their money in banks. A lot of banks went broke and others won’t let you withdraw money.
I don't know why this is a big deal it is the same everywhere you go in a tourist area. All around the world anywhere. Just do your research before you go. It's not just China.

These shop owners are charging US prices for food…. lol …. they are crazy considering that most people in China are low income
I honestly never heard from these incidents. My reason not to go there is more their regime, the nonstop surveillance and the fear being targeted as western tourist for political reasons. If I go on holiday I just don't want to feel like having a bullseye on my back. And there are enough other countries where I don't feel that way. And I can imagine that I am not the only potential tourist that simply doesn't want to risk it in China.
This seems UNBELIEVABLE.
sad to this happening to Xiamen. We went there for a summer study tour back in Highschool. We also enjoyed going to gulangyu that time. Such a nice place. I don’t remember being ripped off. Maybe because we just 13years old at that time.
property keep rising but wages are dropping, thats a paradox 😂
rentals at the popular zhongshanlu shopping has risen 40% after the covid pandemic.
People are still flocking to xiamen because it still offers a decent standard living compared to shanghai or beijing.
That's sad. Xiamen a favorite of mine when I visited China. It's a shame when 1 person ruins it for everyone. Not everyone in China is trying to rip you off (most of the places I went to were decent people and quite friendly). I would say most of them are just folks trying to make a living.
Unfortunately this was 8 years ago for me. That's probably enough time for many things to change.
price gouging will be a down fall to any places .
All the metal screens on windows says it all.
Like South Chicago and Compton
This is happening everywhere.
Boycotting all China Products 🤣
Tourists/foreigners: beware!!!
❤❤❤PRAYING FOR CHINEDE PE OPLE❤❤❤
Thanks to social media, people know the truth faster and it's spread with the speed of light .. face it.
This is what you get when the only thing you are doing is trying to scam ppl.
Shouldn't have been ripping off tourists.
arent they being locked out of their savings not that they are really saving money
Been there like 3 times.Indeed busltling city before Corona.
cant pay with cash, credit card, bank card, google pay..... no mystery
Nice to see china like this
We all can receive all the news coming out of America.
News reports are very imited about where they can go in China and North Korea.
Up and down, money changes hands. Little else happened.
That's why it is important to save money while you have an income.
Hawk Tuah!!
COME ON MAN it dont take long before the reputation of a tourist spot get around the world and then the FOOLS that kept doing this to the people would lose ALL business dont make sense but that is CHINESE THINKING
Very peaceful no crimes convert it to agriculture land
What a down turn . XI on the downward slide. Shame it won’t be fast.
Wats happening about foreign teachers that are teaching in China
