Realistically what business, or persons, would want to invest in a country that teaches its people to hate them. I've always been fascinated by history, and visiting China has been a bucket list goal for years but the thought of potentially being detained for anything makes it a 100% no go. Thanks to the new "espionage" laws there.

Realistically, you'll probably get a bit more out of a trip to Taiwan if you want to scratch your Chinese history itch.
They still have a bunch of original sites, relics and literature preserved from the old times there. And since they never really had that "gap" where everything was destroyed almost beyond recognition, they didn't have that awkward phase where they had to recover the old culture from effectively burnt ashes. Most of the "recovered" cultural practices and literature and some sites in China are either born after the revolution, passed down by word of mouth local customs by the peasants, semi-recreated using historical documents and literature from Taiwan and what little they didn't burn or from Taiwanese cultural group's advisors.
Of course, they haven't burned EVERYTHING in China. It's just that for many of them, they either destroyed historical documents regarding them or destroyed/moved later by local governments to make land for industry or changed. profaned, even. for the cause of the CCP.
The unfortunate thing is that while there were many of the Chinese involved these fields of academics after the revolution who tried to save historical documents and artifacts, most of them ended up beheaded trying. And only a small fraction of the documents and artifacts were successfully kept hidden in China or made it out of China.
The damage is more widespread then people tend to imagine. It wasn't just burning a couple dozen piles of books. It was the entire population whipped up in nationalist frenzy destroying anything they feel is even slightly "old world" that they can reach at that time.

Its not very likely you would get detained unless you work in specific industries. If you are just a regular joe, its unlikely for you to get detained, unless you start going to tiananmen square and start screaming 1989 or something.
And if you still want to experience some chinese culture without mainland china, you can always go to taiwan, as there actually isn't much historical architecture or culture left in mainland China (most of it was systematically destroyed since the 1950's). However, if you want to see the environment, like natural spots, then your stuck with facing the risk to go to China.

For over a decade the CCP boosted GNP gains by building unneeded, unwanted, grandiose, counterproductive, and useless roads, high speed rail lines, dams, whole cities nobody lives in, and other projects on the government dime, wasting trillions of yuan.
More money was invested in building up the military with troops who don't know how to fight, aircraft afraid of the air, untested tank models, ships that decorate the docks, no seaborne assault craft, questionable nukes, no military discipline, 1 year conscripts, and rampant corruption.

Small businesses never really bothered, large one hid their profits from auditors.

I just read that John Deere is moving it's operations to Mexico with over 700 workers. It is so hard to find things that are made in the U.S. We send raw materials or components to other countries, then ship it back. Corporations still find it cheaper to offshore our industrial needs, even thought for all the talk of green energy and pollution, all this shipping to other countries has to be a huge contributor to the carbon footprint. Things made in the U.S. do tend to be more expensive, and it is hard to trace where products come from, all or in part, as the labels or advertisements are very unclear much of the time.

There is a quiet revolution in automated manufacturing. Businesses will be bringing this manufacturing closer to home and the consumer to save on transport costs, and downsizing their workforces. Unfortunately for us it likely does not mean more jobs, despite what politicians promise, they are just trying to take credit for something that is happening anyway. It also sux for other countries who may have been next in line this century to be the worlds manufacturing powerhouses.
