The Caffe Shakerato is a classic summer espresso drink, normally non-alcoholic and featured on @jameshoffmann's wonderful channel. I was craving this on a hot summer afternoon and created a boozy version that's basically a leveled up espresso martini. The chemist version of this drink is a foam monster and it's awesome.

I'm Italian, so I basically live my days through multiple cups of espresso and/or (in summer) caffe` shakerato :)
The way I normally prepare it (and basically all the bartenders around do it this way) is: 3 oz of espresso, 1 oz of vanilla liqueur, optionally 1/4 oz of simple syrup if you have a sweet tooth (I don't add it). Shake well, serve in a double martini glass with 3 coffee beans on top for garnish. The result is amazing, still tastes like coffee, but with the sweetness given by the vanilla liqueur and the texture given by the shaking.
Another popular version - but it changes the flavor profile quite a lot - uses 1 oz of Baileys instead of the vanilla liqueur.
with Bailey's you could call it an Irish Shakerato 👉😎👉
These Shakeratos are next level, that foam in that second one looks seriously tasty!
and it does make a difference
There is a famous drink in Spain and Mexico call "carajillo" they have all sort of mix but the original is espresso and Licor 43 cold shake
I bought liquor 43 just to make this. Its so good and easy.
I love the idea of adding lemon twist for garnish. Thanks for sharing! Can’t wait to make one today, cheers!
Had it tonight with my brother and it was enjoyed by both of us on a hot humid evening. Thanks!!!
The "only for professional use, please" warning sounds like confirmation you live in the Bay Area. haha
Damn! My morning coffee just got cooler and excited
Hahaha the nitrous, “for professional purpose only please” somebody knows about whippets
Can you make some creme de cassis cocktails? Kir/Kir Royal and so on. Any recommendation for creme de cassis brand? Looking for something with high quality and reasonable price.
Everytime you say Mr Black I can't help but think of the Mr Black scene from the Simpsons!
😆
Great method as a cocktail foam topper
Youre doing it right when it gets in your beard. Lol
That’s what she said!
@@BossRedRanger not to you though, but to somebody. Haha
2 day whiskers are very effective. They tickle👱♀️
My God I haven’t seen a bottle of Frangelico since the 1980s! I thought it fell out of favour like blue mixed drinks!
This will probably keep me awake for the whole day
I was gonna say Meletti would be a good amaro for this but on second thought it's too minty(?) to really make it shine.
Another alternative that I think actually might do well would be dente di leone. it's pretty soft and has some really nice caramel notes, plus that floral dandelion note would work well.
Hey Nick can you please take a look at the "Eldomancy Cocktail" that Sam Riegel made during a DnD Beyond Ad segment in Critical Role and see if you can do anything to save this cocktail?
In Italy if order a "Caffè shackerato", you are gonna get a simple shot of espresso shaken with Baileys
But still served as a cold cocktail ?
@@BisZwo not as a cocktail, more like a summer version of iced coffe
@@federicoargilli812 yes, I guess! I also often add 1ml of amaretto and 1 ml of bailey's to my iced coffees for taste and sugar balance. That's why I was asking if they served it hot or cold
How does one say it?
I'd love to see some cocktails made with TEA.
I really have to get one of those whippers
"normally non-alcoholic"
I've always had it with either amaretto or Bailey's here in Italy, I've never seen anyone getting it virgin
It's only the francellico what makes this awesome form. The egg can stabilize this more longer but with francellico it's enough form and it hold very long... Long enough for this drink. Cheers
And sure... Shake it well with ice and double strain it.
It is great you have a sponsorship with Mr Black, and I wanted to order right away! unfortunately quite some of their products are out of order at the moment so that is not great timing :( anyhow, awesome cocktail!
Most BevMos carry them if you live near one
Heya Robin, our core product will be back in stock in the next week or 2. Where are you based?
i wanted to write "james hoffmann wants to know your location" xD but then i saw the shoutout :D love james so much. Keep up the good work
Just make them in the shaker and top them off with foam from the nitrous
Love the pins!
Holy shit that looks great
Love this so much
Do your version of a carajillo!!
In Italy, if you order a Caffè Shakerato in a bar at "aperitivo" time or evening, they usually put Bayles as alcohol and it's amazing. But please, PLEASE don't put any amaro in a shakerato and avoid garnishing it with anything concerning a lemon: coffee and lemon is commonly used here when you need to throw up as well as coffee and salt.
I’d love to see the chemist version with some form of fry ice at the bottom to give it a bubbly and “mystique” (just foggy) version
Show us how to make a Singapore Sling. It is a classic cocktail invented at the Long Bar in the Raffles Hotel in Singapore sometime in the 1910s. I have seen it included in many recipe collections, and was also featured in the film "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas." It is also one of those drinks that (in my experience) most mixologists get wrong. Please help save the world from inferior cocktails and demonstrate the proper way to prepare this delicious and refreshing tropical beverage.
Great video, although please turn down the gain on your mic for your overdubs your levels are just a little too hot.
Looks delicious!
The tesoro is a gorgeous bean
I gonna try the chemist version with Amaro Nonino, Bourbon and Tia Maria.
Will try the chemist version, but using sucralose esters and a milk foaming whisk instead of the siphon thingy and egg whites.
What about using Mr. Black coffee Amaro?
Love this idea!
I wish we could get Mr Black here in Seattle
Hi Danel, we are available in Northwest Liquor & Wine, Downtown Spirits, & Uncle Ikes! Our online shop also ships to you as well.
Sad about I can't Mr Black in Sweden.

Starbucks uses that nitrous oxide to make their whipped cream. Good stuff.
Amaretto please!
That was satisfying as fuck
This is Good
My guy out here with a whole box of nangs
OK, so if I omit the egg white the foam will just be less robust?
What is it with Nick and Amaro right now?

I’m not a fan of coffee alcohol. For those who like it, what sells it for you? Cheers.

How long did the chemist version stay foamy?
is this different from an espresso martini?
Could you freeze this before the foam falls to make like a Gelato?
How do I be like you? What do I need to study to be a cocktail chemist?
I want to see a collab with James! Love both channels
How can the long Island be improved?
Try a carajillo pleaseeee
What does up to eleven even mean?
👉🏼 This man makes an _alcoholic version_ out of literally _everything_ you possibly might throw at him.....
Do a caipirinha video
So if for the chemist version could I just shake it like a sour? I don't have a whipped cream dispenser
it will not foam even a quarter as much - but you can try it and get back to us if it still tastes good
@@adashofbitter yeah I understand it won't foam up as much but it'll taste the same right?
There’s nothing I want more than the sidecar done 3 ways
I'm number 10!!!
I’ve been getting into coffee based cocktails recently haha. The ingredients in the second drink look to be a winner for me Nick! But how would you recommend preparing the drink without the mad scientist whipper thing and with the foam level just turned to 5? Lol 😝
(Edit) just checked the Mr. Black website and they are sold out ☹️. And I can never find that bottle anywhere ever since you started mentioning it back in the day. Guess I’ll have stay like The Dude and stick with the cheap stuff like Kahlúa lol.
Heya Skanadar, we will be back in stock in the next week or 2! Where are you based?

Hi, what syphon are you using in this video? What's the syphon size?
Looks smaller than most I've seen before, and I note you only use one charge.
Is the size of this syphon small enough to normally only need one charge for other cocktails too?
For hobby bartending at home it does seem excessive to spend 2 NOX per serving...
I have a 500 ml siphon from ICO and it works like a charm with a single Nox charge. The one used in the video (and used by most bartenders) is made by iSi, and it's absolutely the best quality around, but it's also damn expensive, like 90 euros for a 500 ml siphon... honestly, for my home bartending it was a bit too much, so I went with a less expensive solution (still around 45 euros anyway)
@@Emanuele_Sacchi thanks for the reply!
So 500 ml it is. Will look around at what's available and what charge brands I can get locally!
However...
I see that ISI now sells a dedicated NOX siphon (only 1000 ml size though)...
It's a bit confusing to me. All their siphons should be able to use NOX charges, right?
@@borgesol Actually, iSi makes both NOX siphons (for whipped cream, essentially) and CO2 siphons (for soda). They are structurally quite different, and you can't really use them interchangeably
@Emanuele Sacchi ok, so I stay clear of the soda ones.
I think I just figured out a third type: N2 charges (www.isi.com/us/culinary/products/detail/product/isi-nitro/), for nitro coffee + similar things. That seems like another separate unit (and I don't know if it's compatible with N2).
So, what I want is a whipped cream siphon (specifically for N2O), is that correct?
@@borgesol Exactly :)
Salud🍻
Cup of foam is the future to pace drinkers
LoL. I thought you meant PHIL'S BBQ
I’d have no reason to drink if I kept nitrous oxide in the house
I absolutely hate coffee but this still looks kind of delicious
groovy recipes....
Would be great to have the ingredients in text form so we don't need to watch the video each time :-)
