#10 James Simmons
Senator from Rhode Island from 1841 to 1847 and again from 1857 to 1862, Simmons got caught getting a contract for two Rhode Island rifle manufacturers in return for $20,000 in promissory notes. So basically, he was bribed to help these two companies make lots of money from the U.S. government, which needed lots of rifles as it turns out since it was fighting the Confederate forces in the Civil War. The reason why Simmons isn’t higher up on this list is because technically there wasn’t a law saying you couldn’t do this, although Congress promptly passed a law banning it after this.
#9 William Blount
Senator from Tennessee from 1796 to 1797, Blount was a Founding Father, and the only Senator on this list to actually sign the U.S. Constitution. Originally from North Carolina, Blount was instrumental in opening up lands west of the Appalachians to settlement. He bought up millions of acres out there himself, but his risky land investments caused him to get a lot of debt. Due to this debt, he conspired with Britain to take over the Spanish-controlled Louisiana to try to raise the prices of his land. Well, he didn’t get away with it. When Congress found out in 1797, he became the first Senator kicked out of the Senate and also the first federal official to get impeached. Blount was arrested, but posted bail and went to Tennessee and never came back. He never showed up to trial, and the feds eventually gave up trying to arrest him again.
#8 Joseph Burton
Aw man, this dude’s from my home state. Senator from Kansas from 1901 to 1906, uh Burton had a little conflict of interest. He was getting paid for defending a company successfully against the United States government while he was Senator. Eventually, he was found guilty of public corruption, which means he was misusing the power he had as Senator for private gain. Burton became the first member of the Senate to actually be convicted of a crime. Now, does that mean other Senators weren’t doing stuff like this before this? Of course not. But he was the first one to get caught.
#7 John Mitchell
Weird coincidence, Mitchell was Senator the same time as Burton. He represented the state of Oregon from 1901 to 1905 and was all about Big Business and against most of the political reforms of the Populists. The biggest reason why he’s on this list is because of his involvement in the Oregon land fraud scandal. Yep, this was more public corruption. Mitchell abused his power, helping a client get patents to fraudulent land claims.

(Dis)honorable mentions (so far):
Albert Fall (New Mexico)
Thomas Catron (New Mexico)
Benjamin Tillman (South Carolina)
James Heflin (Alabama)
Strom Thurmond (South Carolina)
John Tower (Texas)
Robert Byrd (West Virginia)
Strom Thurmond (South Carolina)
always great info thanks
Strom Thurmond?
I mean, the guy literally had the longest filibuster to try to stop the civil rights act in the 50s
@BigRedRidingBear communism and socialism are not the same thing man. Bernie never supported Castro nor does he support bread lines. He did mention that a government willing to give bread to it's citizens, rather then letting them starve as America does, was a government that cared at least a little.
Also senator is a job, it's work, also he has had other jobs.
Wisconsin kind of pretends McCarthy never happened...
I totally understand why...
So does America.
Why he did catch at lot of actual communists
However clumsy, McCarthy was getting closer to the truth, than even he realized. That why he was stopped. The Democrats and Dwight the RINO did not want the American to know the truth.
so they disowned him?
The Senators that left to join the Confederacy did so because their respective States recalled them. At that time, Federal Senators were not elected by popular vote by the citizenry of a State but were selected by a States Legislature. They represented the State at the Federal level and not the citizens of their State. Before the Seventeenth Amendment was passed in 1913 every State had a law that gave the power to send and recall Senators to either the Governor or State Legislature. Most of the southern Senators were recalled from Washington, some against their wishes.
To lump them all together is unfortunate as there were some who sought to seek a diplomatic and peaceful resolution to the foreseen war.
Did you notice one Senator from Indiana on the confederacy list? There’s no explaining that his state recalled him .
You make a fair point. Perhaps I was a bit lazy lumping them all together for this video.
Mr. Beat You are far from lazy! Your videos are awesome and the amount of work you put in is noticeable.
Mikey Likey Andrew Johnson didn’t leave. Although that’s probably the only good thing that can be said about him.
@@iammrbeat I would have just said Jefferson Davis, because he was one of the senators and he became the CSA President.
#1: The Ottawa Senators
Ohh snap
Wait Ottawa is in Canada and is the capital no less.

#2. They couldn't even win at being bad.
can we have a list of strangest examples of political mudslinging in history? or worst
That would be a lot of fun to research and make. :) Thanks for the great suggestion.
@@iammrbeat I second the motion, and WILL share that vid!
The worst could possibly be Hillary and blaming "Russian Collusion" on losing the 2016 election when she in fact was being investigated as well as having sold billions worth of Uranium to Russia.
@@iammrbeat If you do end up making that, the caning of Charles Sumner and the election of 1800 would both have to make the list.
@Bonnie V oh, boy, here we go again. How long do you think that comment is going to last before it becomes a full on RUclips comments section political debate?
The fact that Thurmond doesn't crack the list scares me, but I guess I'll have to watch it.
Probably Number 11
@@SnowghostFilms#12 Mitch McConnell
@@williamtoad8040 Mitch McConnell is ineligible for this list since he is still in office.
"Ha! Dude's name is Bilbo!"
*literally 5 seconds later*
"Oh, well that's significantly less fun...."
Great list Mr. Beat. Glad to see Bilbo made the list, I learned about him in college and was surprised to hear everything he did. Nevertheless, good job.
Thanks buddy. Yeah Bilbo was pretty horrible.
Bilbo and Eastland were atrocious.
Bilbo baggins
would’ve been better
@@JackCoxx If you'll check, Sen. Stennis always voted in line with Eastland (on social issues), just more dignified. Bilbo was a populist: he did a lot of good things for the state. His racial positions were in line with the majority of white Southerners at the time. If you want to take a good look at corruption, look at Mississippi's "senators" during reconstruction. I know something of Bilbo because my cousin was widely-believed to have "ghost-written" his book, "Take Your Choice." Bilbo was slowing dying of throat cancer and simply in no condition to be writing. Evelyn Gandy, on the other hand ..... I've read his book. It is racist to the core, but neither Bilbo nor Gandy had a problem with that.
You videos are awesome, Mr. Beat!!!! Thanks for your videos!!
:) Thanks so much
My favorite thing I learned about the red scare that involved McCarthy is that one clip from one of the hearings and one brave man (I can’t remember his name but god he was a hero) who basically stood up to McCarthys ranting and ravings and yelled “Have you no decency?!”
That was Joseph N. Welch, who was acting as chief counsel for the US Army during the Army-McCarthy hearings. That was really the end for McCarthy, because not many people were willing to buy his argument that the US Army was full of commies.
Ted Cruz's beard doesn't even get a dishonorable mention?
I'm saving it for HONORABLE mention. hee hee
Mr. Beat because his beard covers up his face and who wants to see that uh creepy.
Bearded Ted is from the Mirror Universe. In a surprise twist he is also evil.
@U Haul wut
@U Haul I'm sure "Colonial Sanders" will care about your opinion.
This is a good commentary. Full of good facts and humour. Thank you!

Could you Even do An explaination to the Presidential Primaries And it's problems?
I would love to cover that. Thanks for the suggestion.
@@iammrbeat 2nd that motion, too.
@Austin Martín Hernández plus they can split the vote
The Democrats aren't unified and don't have a clear moderate that's their biggest problem.
Love your list Mr. Beat!
I love how the only dishonorable mention in the description is just Strom Thurmond, like he was the only bad senator people wanted on the list.
I know right.
Thurmond was definitely worse than McCarthy
Have you done a 10 best Senators yet? I'd love to see that...

great video!! Learned so much!
Thanks :)
Excellent Video MR.Beat
Your lists are so cool!
I'd be curious to find out what Franklin Pierce did as a Representative and Senator but most things I found about him focus on how depressing his life was and how terrible he was as president
From what I could find, he was a member of the U.S. Congress as a Senator from New Hampshire, serving the 25th and 26th sessions, before leaving during the 27th. I can't find much about the 25th or 26th Congress legislation, but it seems like he was a pretty run-of-the-mill Senator (for the time.)
Yeah, he was a horrible President but he did fine enough as a Senator. No need to kick him again after I kicked him so much in my video last year. :)
I have a feeling Oregon subscribers will be trying to bribe you with Voodoo Doughnuts to edit the Oregon Senators out of the video.
I gladly accept the bribes lol
Very good, Mr. Beat. Could've mentioned others in the topic, but it will slide.
Mr. Beat, how about a companion to your list of presidential elections talking about elections for Congress? You could talk about how many seats each party had before and after, some of the notable upsets, etc. I think it would be really fascinating.
The fact that Strom Thurmond didn't make the worst Governors or Senators has me very concerned about the overall state of our republic
The rest of his tenure in the Senate was actually pretty good. He ended up voting for Martin Luther King day to become a holiday.
Who gives a fuck. What did he do to help the country? *crickets*
The only good thing that Sen. McCarran did was his support for the aviation industry.
Yeah, props to him for that. That's a big reason why he has an airport named after him.
Mr. Beat In Las Vegas right?

Mr. Beat oh here to help us start our month right!
Hey Mr Beat can you please compare New Mexico and Arizona?
2nd that motion.
Maybe Kansas should elect Mr. Beat for the Senate.
I would love to see control city freak as one of their senators.
Nice video overall. To the criticism you're receiving over lumping all Confederate senators together despite their obligations to their state: the could have easily resigned or protested. That being said, few southern senators really disagreed with the succession of their states or withdrawal of their colleagues so it doesn't make much of a difference. Jefferson Davis was famously against succession and fought for the preservation of the Union. However once his state left he resigned his seat. On different note; I love reading the comments on you're videos. Despite so many videos about history and civics readily available on your channel, some people don't seem to understand the basics of either. Plus people commenting current or recently-made former-senators clearly didn't pay attention to the literal first minute of your video.
Great comment. Thanks for sticking up for me. :) Yeah Jefferson Davis was fairly rotten. And yeah, it is funny how many people in the comment section think they have it all figured out already.
@@iammrbeat I know this is 4 years old but I Want to comment on this Video (and yes I saw you placed T.G.B in 2nd). Love you're channel BTW. Personally I think some of the worst U.S. senators that are in my opinion tied at number 1 or would be honorable mentions would be Theodore G. Bilbo (1877-1947) (D), James K. Vardaman (1861-1930) (D) a twofer both for Mississippi, Benjamin Tiliman (1847-1918) (D), and Cole L. Blease (1868-1942) (D) another twofer for South Carolina not just cause they where racist but a special kind of Racism and some of the most most divisive, and hateful people in American history. I mean Vardaman even went as far as saying he would commit genocide on African Americans and probably others (presumably) in order to maintain white supremacy.
Nice video Mr Beat! Interesting facts
Thank you much!
Best channel on yt
You are kind. :D
i think benjamin tillman deserved an honorable mention/place on this list, i mean he literally BRAGGED about killing black people

Not yet...just a video about fascism. That's a great idea, though. Glad you dig the videos!
Can you make videos of the worst politicians in each state? If you do can you start out on my state of West Virginia. Love your videos. Keep doing what your doing buddy!!!
WOOHOO! New Mr. Beat video.
You know if I was an incredibly racist US Senator called Bilbo I'd refer to myself in the third person too.
whoa, those deep-voice-changes are trippy
Just don't eat magic brownies while watching.
Fun fact, Pat McCarren is supposedly inspired by the character Senator Pat Geary, from The Godfather Part II.
Subbed. Do the event when a gunman opened fire in the congress building. I never got over how our law making building could have atrocity of any kind, let alone a gun crime.

The Las Vegas airport that was formerly named after McCarran is now named after Harry Reid, probably for that reason
Wait where am I?

you nailed mccarthy lol
Top 10 First Ladies pls
You forgot Jesse Helms, the longest-serving popularly elected Senator in North Carolina's history. Helms helped organize and fund the conservative resurgence in the 1970s, focusing on Ronald Reagan's quest for the White House as well as helping many local and regional candidates. His efforts here was key in leading the Republican resurgence and the rise of neoliberalism with Reagan. He led opposition to federal intervention into what he considered state affairs (including legislating integration via the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and enforcing suffrage through the Voting Rights Act of 1965). As chairman of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee, he demanded a staunchly anti-communist foreign policy that would reward America's friends abroad, and punish its enemies. He opposed civil rights, disability rights, feminism, gay rights, affirmative action, access to abortions, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA), and the National Endowment for the Arts. Helms brought an "aggressiveness" to his ''conservatism'' (fascism), as in his rhetoric against homosexuality. The Almanac of American Politics once wrote that "no American politician is more controversial, beloved in some quarters and hated in others, than Jesse Helms".
I was going to assume Benjamin Tillman was going to be first, but I’m still satisfied with the results
The flag you used to color Vermont was the Vermont Secessionist flag lol
It was the Green Mountain Boys flag.
It'll be cool to compare Superintendent, historical and what is more important, nowadays.
Bilbo helped find the ring...can't be all bad
What about Aron burr sir?
Burr didn’t really do anything that would compare to anyone on this list until he became Jefferson’s Vice President
I think Strom Thurmond should’ve made the list too
