Props to your mom, April. She's a trouper taking on this second round of decluttering and in her own way (10-minute sprints) -- all while allowing us into her home. This episode was a great lesson in "focusing on your own stuff" while respecting others'. These TX series continue to motivate me, and I trust your mom will keep going as well. What an impact. (I'm particularly glad for her as she's also been able to address/spend time with her own mother's things and the memories. That's major, and part of both processes -- decluttering and mourning, however long either takes.) Great work and support.
Of all the decluttering videos I watch yours is the most inspirational and the reason why is because you give grace to the person you’re helping. Explaining to us the viewers exactly what’s happening in each section so we can learn how to do it ourselves. You are a really good teacher!❤️
One thing that helped my mom to get rid of good condition housewares was to donate to a refugee resettlement charity rather than to a typical thrift shop charity. The resettlement agency had a list of things needed to furnish a home and we were able to literally furnish an entire home for another family with the extras from my moms house. So motivating and rewarding to be able to help a family in need.
Wow! That's incredible and def something that I need to add to my resource list I'm compliling. Do you know how someone would search for that in their city? Is it a specific organizaiton?
@@SpaceMakerMethod Great question! I don’t know of a large charity that does refugee resettlement, but it is a pretty common ‘type’ of charity, so you could google it in your city or maybe ask the local United Way for a list.
@@tonimika7900 My country gives refugees new items with the taxes from the money that they take away from me for working hard in this country. Mean while my parents worked hard for everything and they got no one to give them anything free!
Your mom is so brave! I've loved seeing her progress and I'm inspired by her tenacity to keep going. I can relate to trying to declutter YEARS of things (we have some of the same things she does), while also tackling what to do with things that belong to loved ones that have passed. SO HARD, but she is doing a fantastic job. ❤
You just made me realise why I get overwhelmed, stressed and end up leaving it altogether - leave the organising till last, thank you so much for that 👏👍🙏 The amount of stuff ye went through was amazing and the space that’s there now is a credit to you both. Take a bow ladies 🙇♀️🙇♀️ It was great to have the space for all the kitchen stuff from the garage. I’m a little sad that there are only two more videos in this series and I will miss seeing ye work together. Stay safe and healthy. Mary, Joes wife 👏💪👍🙏💐
You gave some great advice in this video, April. I'm so grateful that my husband left decluttering to me. If I had waited for him to get to "his side" of things, we would probably still have too many tools, hardware and stuff we no longer needed after retiring ("just in case"). He loves our minimalist lifestyle and appreciates how calming and uncomplicated things are without clutter. I love that, after I'm gone, my children will never experience the annoyance of decluttering what I should have decluttered. That's a terrible psychological and emotional burden to place on anyone.
Again, I’m so proud of your mom. It’s a lot to go through after the pandemic and the death of your nanna. I’m also proud of you April. It’s tough finding things from all of these generations and letting go. This is quite a lot of “death cleaning” as well. Great work ladies.
Amazing change in your mom’s portion of the garage ! Kudos to you two! She will surely be able some day to enthuse your dad to enjoy this process as well. EVERYONE loves a declutter: they don’t LIKE decluttering !!!
Garages are always the 'catch all' areas, so organising them is really hard. The end result here may not be pinterest worthy, but you managed to clear out so much, and now you know exactly what you have for when you come to organise. Great job so far!
When one is going through their challenging times and things get away from you and get out of hand - one has the tendency to think they are an island and the only one having these issues or not having the energy to deal with things as they continue to get out of hand. Whether it’s a closet, a room, the garage, or the whole house. It's nice to see you really are not an island / not alone and that this is all very common and normal. Thank you!
I am so proud of your mom! She is really working hard and making tough decisions. After years of hoarding, because of grief, my mom is letting me help her declutter her home. It is hard for her to stay focused on just decluttering....without thinking ahead, but we are making so much progress! Keep up the good work.
I love the idea of focusing on just decluttering instead of being overwhelmed by thoughts of where to put everything I have. That is something I struggle with because it makes me feel so overwhelmed that I'd rather not do anything at all. So I end up holding myself back from having the space I could if I tried to do just 1 thing at a time. Thanks again for sharing these videos with us! ♥ Jenny
Big improvement! We need a season 3! I wouldn't say to not donate an item if you wouldn't give it to your MIL. I'm not even sure how to interpret that. But I've seen people throw things away that are merely dirty, or scuffed that I definitely would have bought. (Eg: one lady decluttering on YT was going to throw out a Pyrex loaf pan just bc it had some yellow staining. All you need is a damp sponge and baking soda, or scouring powder.) Is that something you would or would not have given to your MIL? Sure, if it's gross, dump it, but you never know what some people are looking for in thrift shops. I've often looked for old containers to use to organize tools in the store room.
The mystery kitchen item is for making jam when the fruit has little seeds. You push the jam through the sieve so the jam is seedless. The garage is looking great!
I don't want to be too personal, but would you tell us briefly how your dad feels about the already decluddered and (beautifully) put together space in the house? If you feel comfortable to do so, of course.
He likes it and I think it inspired him to work on organzing some of his space. But at his core, he's still a maximalist... but I suppose progress is progress.
It's so great that you could do this with your mom. If you stay in a house long enough and are not very mindful of what stuff gets into your home it's just normal that things accumulate. Your parents will surely get to enjoy their home even more after this massive declutter :) I would love to get my dad to agree on such an adventure!
The whole process of decluttering is summed up in this video. Thank you. So real and true. The heat, noise, emotions, arguing, worrying, 🙇♀️decisions, and finally satisfaction of a job well done. That is reality and how it is. I wish I had help, a sounding board and encouraging person to help me. S😅o, kudos to you and your mom for sharing. AND thank her for her profession!🥰
It’s all progress (huge progress) even if it’s not the ultimate transformed space at the end. It’s going to make their painting and organizing much easier. And your mom is definitely practicing, learning, and refining her technique, building those declutter muscles, which will lead to even more progress in the future :)
My approach is so different but I can totally respect the mental space you’re giving your mom. I recently did a garage and I really like to empty the entire space and organized as we haul. I just do it in departments and if it’s remotely a donation we set by the car or by the door but that way we can walk around and see oh there’s 10 ski poles and 2 skiers so now that they are all together we could see how many they had and didn’t need to hold onto all of them. I call it shopping our stuff and pick what we want to keep by placing it in the space we have not the space we want.
Mama-April has strong doing-vibes, so I can see why the speed-go-throughs are working. While she's definitely a doer - this isn't her favourite doing - she wants to get into that craft room and her other projects which give her satisfaction. Working quickly would allow her to see the end in sight and know she can repair to her own room to craft and sew and whatever she wants and know the other areas are at least somewhat dealt with - which would be a wonderful freeing feeling. What a fabulous after - I think you two make a fantastic team.
A great job as always! Your mom is so good at this by now, and it's so nice you were able to come back when she was more ready to let things go. Looking forward to next week's video!
When I woke up this morning and look at my closet and decided to declutter . I got rid 70%off it ,the best feeling ever had .I can see through my closet and walk in to it as long ago I not even could step my foot in .
🤗Awesome work mom and daughter power team!!!! 🤠You know you're from Texas when You have ziplock bags of bullets in the garage and ziplock bag of pecans in the kitchen!!! Greetings from Dallas Texas! ⭐
I love this series. I’m getting my basement cleaned. Just made shelves yesterday. I am a holiday decorator so I have been going through bins decluttering. These videos offer a lot of motivation. Enjoy the day
Thanks for adding the end of the kitchen footing. Both jobs look so much better. It must feel so rewarding to your mom! We have raw wet weather here today. Seeing you sweltering from the heat, made it feel not so bad here. LOL.
That Texas heat was not something I was ready for 🤣 We did think we'd spend more time getting the garage fixed up but with the heat it wasn't possible.
I would literally pay the shipping to Germany to get that colorful crochet blanket you decluttered. I've been looking for one like that for YEARS!!! :)
You are so right about not decluttering other people's things. I don't touch any of hubby's tools, (especially since he builds me anything I dream of I.e. w/I closet, harry potter/filming room 🤣) and the few tools in the "utility" room other than his work clothes I don't touch, I've organized all his clothes and about once a year he will go through them and see what can be downgraded to work clothes (builder). And, as I'm a virgo, he often teases me by pulling a sweater out of a drawer and just stuffing it back in unfolded. I "sense" it 😂 your mum has made so much progress, how does the house feel for her now with so much less and somewhat organized? You are a superstar 💖😘💖😘💖😘💖😘💖👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Amazing job Mom 😘. So very proud of you. Please send us pictures when you get the garage painted. I know you feel like you’ve unloaded yourself and just getting things more manageable. I haven’t reached that place mentally yet but I know it’s only a matter of time. Take care ~ Janet 😘
Ah! Great watch !!! Your mum’s a pro .. I am inspired to do all this before hand .. year by year … till my daughters have to step in ! Or call you for help!
We take as much as we can to the recycling centre or it goes in our weekly collection - electricals, metals, paper & cardboard, textiles, shoes, batteries, lightbulbs, plastics, compostables etc so very little actually ends up in landfill (which isn’t away, it’s there for hundreds of years!).
Definitely just declutter first then organise at the end because you find a lot of containers to put things in without having to buy and you have so much space to organise into .
That is good advice to not think so far ahead to organizing while decluttering. This is the first time I’ve seen a garage used as a closet. I live on the opposite part of Texas -Southeast. It is hot and humid. Clothes would get molded and possible roach and rodent infestation. Your Mom is doing a wonderful job!
I have to admit your mom is doing brilliant, not good but brilliant, she is so lucky she has you to help her realize that abundance is not a sign of happiness, nor is it a sign to keep everything because 1 day she might use or need it, clear space to breath and enjoy life is so important to mental health, I have enjoyed this series so much ( I wish you would do another 😂) this has made me open my eyes to things I I need to do. Thank you both ladies, at the beginning I felt so sorry for your mum, having to deal with everyone's stuff, she must have felt so disheartened by the amount of loss and stuff, her parents probably kept every single item" in case" and then it was left to their daughter, memories of each item must be breaking her heart.
That thing you couldn’t I’d? A jelly strainer. Cooked fruit in the top, pushed thru with the wooden tool do you have a seedless, skinless base to make jelly out of. 😊
@@SpaceMakerMethod this was so helpful. We moved my daughter last week. In to her first place and the house was furnished… but it’s older and there was so much clutter. But we box all most all of it up. 😃
Love the decluttering series. Your mom's doing a great job! If it's so hot in the garage, I think tank tops would be cooler than black t-shirts. You need some tanks with your logo!
It's true when you said when one person is ready to declutter and the other person is not ready to declutter, you do the best with what you got. That's my real life situation! I'm ready to declutter and let go but my husband doesn't want to declutter. The bad part is we are in the process of moving and I have to help my husband move all his clutter!! But I am doing the best with what I got. Love your videos and declutter tips ❤️❤️ Your Mom is doing a awesome job. That's funny when your Mom said her process is to scream. 😂 I can relate to that when I declutter my stuff.
14:54 i think it's some nameless internal process to let go of things. Some people say why double handle things, but the decision is not a conscious one. For the things that are easy to let go of, that internal process has already occurred, that's all. When you're processing clutter, what you're really waiting for is that internal "yes" or "no". So its not that you're keeping something now only to get rid of it later, and wondering why you hung onto it, you're just not getting that answer yet. All these decisions takes a lot of energy. Bringing them in occurred over years, decades even. You're not going to reverse the process in a day.
Oh yes! Doing that in these 2 garage episodes was a challenge because it was 100 degrees and we had the fans and washer going and it was so loud 🤪 Should be back to more voice soon tho!
Thank you and your family for sharing this with us! Such amazing progress! This must have been really difficult and now that it's done such a relief! Decluttering is incredibly individualized. I'm in maintenance mode and for me the paperwork is the bane of my existence! For the paperwork that comes in I deal with it ASAP. I have several folders with intention and dates. So I only need to deal with it twice. Once when it comes in and when it is necessary or expired. Most of the time I can go paperless!
It sounds like you made a great system for yourself. Paperwork is the worst. We have mosty everything paperless which I'm grateful for, but I remember peak 90s when you'd get abotu 20 pieces of mail a day... that stuff adds up so wuick!
My parents have the contents of my paternal grandparents junk drawer. Neatly labeled in its own bin. And a labeled cardboard box with 90s pool floaties. The cheap orange and green rafts. Should make for an interesting dig through at some point if not an impromptu floaties party in their pond. BTW they don't have a pool and never have but since they live on a farm they do have a pond or two. 😂
The interesting thing you were referring to is to make jelly with. That is what my mother used it for. I have hers. Now that I have retired I hope to make jelly and Jam nest summer.
I always look at the price I paid for something and how long are used it. This helps me to see that I got my use out of it and it can be thrown in the trash
yep. it's amazing how much we all collect in our homes, my goal is that this channel slowly helps people realize that and shift their consumerist behaviors. myself included.
The advice on only thinking about decluttering first. I have a whole condo Im working on. Are you saying if I run across a pile/shelf of books in let’s say bedroom, I should clear as many as I can right then. I want to consolidate to a wall of shelving which isn’t really ready to go yet. I’m understanding you to say leave the remaining books on the shelf in the bedroom until I’m ready to organize all books to wall of shelves. I’ve been shoving in current shelves or boxing up for later maybe that’s why it seems so huge to deal with
I think I understand what you're saying. What I find to be the most helpful for people is to yes, just declutter first. It's too overwhelming to think three steps down the line for people and I think that's when the procrastination hits. I've found it best to just focus on decluttering first, asking yourself what you want to keep/what's important to you to have moving forward. After that, then move to thinking about how to reorganize or decorate. I think that many of those questions "where should I put this, what should I buy for this.." those usually answer themselves once you've decluttered and have less to work with/know exactly what you're working with. And often I even find that what you thought you needed in hte beginning isn't even an issue after the fact.
Those wire shelves being upside down was throwing me off. But having a front ledge so things don’t fall off might not be a bad idea depending what’s on them.
I too am at a different point in the decluttering then my husband. My life is in a transition as well, daily I now only cook for four, but when the family gathers we need the big pans, same as when it’s harvest and freezing time.Sometimes in the decluttering stage I consider where I’ll put it, but it can help me make the decision whether it’s staying or going.Do I really have room to keep it and live comfortably? My question sometimes.
You are a darling daughter, but as a short person, I sometimes see you putting something up high and wonder will Mum be able to reach that? I have changed things around in the kitchen so all hubbys chilli meals that i dont eat are in the cupboard above the fridge. He can reach up there. You and your Mum are so cute together. ❤
To go through old paperwork that needs to be shredded is the worst thing for me!! I am more on top of it lately…any current paperwork is in a folder IF I need it to and as it comes in the door!
I completely forgot to add the end of the kitchen footage to Ep. 4, so I added the final look to the end of this video! So sorry! 😵💫

Oh no! I wish I would have known before!
Progress over perfection 💪😊
Always! I need to adopt that saying for these!
Great job! 👏👏👏👍💞
Thank you 🤗
I am sure your mom is feeling so much better in her space. Great job❤
Thank you! 🤗 She is!
Great job mama space maker!
thanks danya! ...I really like your name!!
Well, if it's any indication... she keeps sending me photos of things she's made in her craft room!
I will be sure to add those to the community tab as she makes updates!
Ah! Great watch !!! Your mum’s a pro .. I am inspired to do all this before hand .. year by year … till my daughters have to step in ! Or call you for help!
Keeping up with it annual is really the best approach!
That;s awesome!
Great job! Your Mom did a lot! Papers are the hardest thing to declutter 😅 at least for me it is!
they are so time consuming. I completely understand why they get put into boxes in a corner to be forgotten
Definitely just declutter first then organise at the end because you find a lot of containers to put things in without having to buy and you have so much space to organise into .
Your mother just keeps going! Very impressive!!!
Thank you!
If your Mom is up for it, I would love to see a tour of her Longenberger basket collection. They’re like little Easter eggs I’ve seen in your videos 😍
My family does a LOT of potlucks and family dinners each week so I'm sure she's just collected them over the years.
Great progress! Those Longaberger baskets were made in the town where I live! I always enjoy seeing them pop in various videos like this! 😃
I agree! 😊Fellow Ohio resident and Longaberger collector here!
@@janetlewton6190 Go bucks!! 😃😃😃
the 90s mommas love em!
I love these when you are working with your mom!
Only 2 episodes left!
Oh ya, it's all about taking it one step at a time!
Being that you and your husband are only child helping your parents help you both later settle their estate...Be Bless
Thank you! We do have siblings, but well, I think I'm the only one that had the vision for this sort of thing.
Your mom has done a phenomenal job!
Thanks Kristi! Little by little we're making progress!
Thank yo so much Tessa 💛
Wow, this was awesome! And I think your dad will declutter too one day, when he has more time. :)
I htink so too!
That thing you couldn’t I’d? A jelly strainer. Cooked fruit in the top, pushed thru with the wooden tool do you have a seedless, skinless base to make jelly out of. 😊
My mom used hers to make applesauce
Oh wow! I've never seen that before!
Such a great tip.. sticking to decluttering 👏👏🥰. I’m going to try this tomorrow 😅.
It's so simple, but so effective! Good luck!
You need some tanks with your logo!
haha I hadn't planned on it being so hot 🤣 the girls been outta Texas too long I htink
😂 I can relate to that when I declutter my stuff.
hahaha sometimes you just gotta let that scream out 🤣
How fun....TSD/Space Maker merch? Can't wait. LKMH
Coming soon! (as soon as I can figure out all the techy stuff that makes my brain numb 🤣)
When your Dad isn’t home or not looking throw away the round up! ❤
I would like to hear you and your mom talk through the clutter more often than the music-over. Great job!! ❤
Oh yes! Doing that in these 2 garage episodes was a challenge because it was 100 degrees and we had the fans and washer going and it was so loud 🤪 Should be back to more voice soon tho!
Good job, ladies!👍🥰💜
thank you!
“She told me I’m right.” Sweet moment.
💛💛
My parents have the contents of my paternal grandparents junk drawer. Neatly labeled in its own bin. And a labeled cardboard box with 90s pool floaties. The cheap orange and green rafts. Should make for an interesting dig through at some point if not an impromptu floaties party in their pond. BTW they don't have a pool and never have but since they live on a farm they do have a pond or two. 😂
bahaha I hope you find one of the 90s alligators and orca's in there too!
The interesting thing you were referring to is to make jelly with. That is what my mother used it for. I have hers. Now that I have retired I hope to make jelly and Jam nest summer.
I can't believe I've never seen one of those before!
I always look at the price I paid for something and how long are used it. This helps me to see that I got my use out of it and it can be thrown in the trash
So nice to see.
thanks for watching again, Mary!
All good!
thank Julie!
The amount of natural resource consumed by one household is astonishing.
yep. it's amazing how much we all collect in our homes, my goal is that this channel slowly helps people realize that and shift their consumerist behaviors. myself included.
Excited for the video! Wishing you the best ❤
thanks Sophie!
Winter is coming and my garage is still a disaster! This was very inspiring.
You got this!
Don' t want this to end
😜
Your skin looks fantastic btw . Im also a skincare junkie.
Oh thank you! It's taken YEARS to get it to a great place and it's all thanks to k-beauty. Are you a k-beauty lover too?
Oh for sure! my mom once had that black crock pot fall on her head (completely serious) so I think they might have switched them for htat very reason.
You have the “patience of Job” 😬
I too am at a different point in the decluttering then my husband. My life is in a transition as well, daily I now only cook for four, but when the family gathers we need the big pans, same as when it’s harvest and freezing time.Sometimes in the decluttering stage I consider where I’ll put it, but it can help me make the decision whether it’s staying or going.Do I really have room to keep it and live comfortably? My question sometimes.
it can be so challenging to declutter when you have so many essentials for different seasons of life. Hope you find a great balance for you soon!
Lol I love the she told me I was right comment! Sometimes parents are not accepting of help or advice.
haha yes I learned that lesson many times in this series 🤪
You are a darling daughter, but as a short person, I sometimes see you putting something up high and wonder will Mum be able to reach that? I have changed things around in the kitchen so all hubbys chilli meals that i dont eat are in the cupboard above the fridge. He can reach up there.
You and your Mum are so cute together. ❤
What a difference 😍 am sure she feels better and hopefully he will see and want to decutter also. See you next time 😀
I think so.. we just need to give him time 💛
Yes but everything looks amazing.
Don’t say last mom declutters are the best! 😍
Lol giant tooth brush at 9:46
I didn't even see that🤣
Woop in early
😜🥰😘💛
Great job. Why does one save so many kitchen plastic storage containers with tops? Why? No one has that many leftovers.
To go through old paperwork that needs to be shredded is the worst thing for me!! I am more on top of it lately…any current paperwork is in a folder IF I need it to and as it comes in the door!
Having that back pile of paperwork is really the worst.
I'll bet your mom feels 1000 lbs lighter. Good for you guys!🤗
So much lighter!
❤
💛
Looks amazing! I bet your Mom feels lighter.
I think she definitely is!
