And we're back for Season 2! I'm so excited for this season because rarely do we get to revisit the homes we've decluttered! We talk about how decluttering and organizing your home can take multiple passes and during this season I'm going to show you exactly what that means.
PS. Hopefully we'll be back to our regular scheduled videos now as things are starting to settle down from the move. Izzy also sends you her love and wants you to know that she is doing best of all of us🤣. - Hi from Korea! -April

I was watching and thinking the same, I have a deep shelved pantry and the difference it made in finding things is incredible. I painted the underside of the shelves as well. It was paint , leftover and needed used. I hadn’t done it initially because I was short on time and paint, a few years later and it’s done. I’m glad you’re back helping her out, it’s enjoyable.

The priority of late has been painting outside the house. The extreme heat, 105-107, this summer REALLY slowed progress! But just minimal trim on two sides to go. I’m hopeful to get some help on the bathroom floor. Once that’s done, the cabinets will need darkening wash on outside, and GREAT idea to paint inside them. Thanks! ( hmm 🤔 will all these projects EVER be completed?) 🙏🏼🤞but guess you’ll just have to stay tuned!☺️

What a sweet, talented mom you have. There is no shame to have at all, though I so understand. It might help to think that in all those thousands of years we humans existed, we never had to declutter. Not until industrialization brought in products and products, the 1970's about. So in all the decluttering history we all are still in baby shoes. We all are still learning. Also, I am a R.N. too (for 40years now). Licensed in Norway, Germany and the States. Respect for your mom to be teaching. 🥰

I couldn’t help but notice at least two times if not three, when you said that your mom was a visual person. That acknowledgment is soooo vital when organizing for someone else. When we made over my Dad’s home office as a surprise years ago,my sister wanted to do a whole wall of cabinets with doors because SHE doesn’t want to see everything out. However, knowing what an EXTREMELY visual person he was, I said no,it had to be all open shelving on top.( or else it would all end up pulled out on the counter) The RUclips channel “Clutterbug” had an eye opening episode where she broke people’s styles down into four basic categories: micro versus macro sorters and visual versus closed and a combination of them. So I am a macro sorter( bathroom: teeth, hair, nails, etc.) but don’t need to see any of it. (I’m fine with big, solid, unlabeled bins behind a door and I keep it that way) Unless you acknowledge that person’s style, you can help them for days but it will return to the way it was because it didn’t work for them. My favorite episode was when she organized the bathroom closet for her in-laws and then showed it four different ways for the four different types ( and a compromise if husband and wife aren’t the same type) Anyway…….I love how you know that about your mom and incorporate it for her and frankly for anyone out there who likes to help people organize their stuff, that should be the first thing you ask them.( micro sort vs macro and hidden storage vs open)

I loved watching season 1 so much because it felt familiar and realistic. My mom and grandma have lived in their homes since raising kids and have accumulated decades worth of STUFF. I try my best to encourage decluttering and organization but it's one of those scenarios (like the Texas declutter) that calls for a full overhaul. It has to get worse before it gets better. I’m not a nurse but know many and work for hospital, we need people like your mom to train and support those new nurses. It’s not an easy job.
I love, love her beach scene over the window and think it’s a good idea for a bad view and a picture you don’t know what to do with but live.
And sewing? Requires a fair amount of space compared to some hobbies but very rewarding. Flat fabric to curves & depth that fit someone is really a little miracle.

I think your parents have done an amazing job with both the upkeep of what's been done already, and in doing NEW projects by themselves since you left. WoW! So proud of your mama--she's rocking it. I would say hard pass on the navy kitchen cabinets...white kitchen cabinets are classic for a reason-it's cheerful, looks clean even when it isn't and it's always bright, even on the darkest days. To go from white to navy is going to take a lot of product too-which is costly and more labor intensive. You'll need a dark primer, so that when the dark paint chips, white won't show through. Is the backsplash black and white tile or navy and white? Whatever the dark color is, I would paint the great piece your grandfather made for them-it is fantastic for storage for them and they obviously need it. It's beautiful-update it with paint..and you could even go a step more and put in frosted glass or just use the stick on papers made for glass to turn them from clear glass to frosted for privacy. Just ideas....and just an opinion on navy cabinets. I'm so proud of your folks and you---they are inspiring me to declutter. I made the first step yesterday by renting a storage area -so I will have a place to work in going through boxes of my mother's stuff. I can put tables in there to work from wince I can't be bending and stooping. It's a start-and that's what I needed. Your awesome videos will keep me inspired and moving forward! Thank you❤️

Cas from Clutterbug, has a quiz to find out what type of organisation suits you best. Your mum seems to be like me, a butterfly. We like to see everything we have, so it's best to always use clear bins. I'm glad that you can do some more organising and fine tune what you've already done. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

Total cricket here! To the point if I don’t have a storage solution I won’t put it away. For those who haven’t seen the Clutter Bug it really is useful to understand your storage type. I’ve been able to quit feeling bad about all my junk being out and instead concentrate on creating the systems I need. For example I have boxes of house decor and crafts sitting and that stuff piled but my clothes stay very tidy because I designed an Elfa closet that works for me. Even sort clothes by color when I have the energy!

I think having hooks in the craft room for current projects would be nice. Also navy is trendy, white kitchen cupboards are timeless. I'd do white. You could always paint over the tile or do peel and stick tile. I'm excited for season 2!!

Super excited for season 2!!! Season 1 helped keep me motivated while I helped my mom declutter her stuff. I'm so proud of her. She decluttered her massive bed frame, childhood cedar chest, solid wood office desk and a total gym exercise machine. That was 2 weeks ago! And I've been implementing the "small space shuffle" several times in the process of helping her rearrange furniture and move out furnature.

I agree with you that decluttering gets easier the more you do it and it does take a few rounds of decluttering before you are able to get rid of more stuff. I have been helping my mom declutter for the last two years and she told me recently that she wants to get rid of more stuff. She was very reluctant to get rid of stuff in the beginning of our decluttering journey but now she it is a lot easier for her to decide about what to keep and what to declutter. It was hard for me too at times because I have some sentimental attachment to some things as well.

    • @SpaceMakerMethod
      @SpaceMakerMethod  2 года назад

Oh that's so encouraging to hear! I know in the beginning it's so tempting to push someone to get rid of more, but I've found that you just have to give them time and they'll come around eventually! I hope you're able to help her make some more progress with anohter round!

Im voting for even a season 3! I think this one is going to be so good. I agree on the trim, it was the only thing i felt differently about during that season. You could put the hanging ocean window painting above where your mom sews. Some people use comic book boards to wrap their fabric around when they display it. It would be cute to have sewing notions all on those shelves. Any dog owner knew right away what all the mini rugs were about for Dirk. Much love 💕

Mama-April, never apologise or not having gotten that decluttering or this organising done - you do you - and also be gentle on yourself when you get sick or injured. Also, us nosy parkers out here get to enjoy Daughter-April sweeping in and helping you organise your lovely little home around your life - so you can focus on what you want to do. We also get to spend more time with Bubba-Pupper! Yay! (Perhaps a purchase of one of those baby-sacks might be an idea? I'm sure pupper would be very contented tucked into one of those and carried about everywhere 😊) Also, every single item kept for pupper's comfort and care is worth it a thousand times over.

I don’t know if this series is completely filmed already but when you mentioned painting the kitchen cabinets darker, I had a thought about how darker lower cabinets and lighter/white cabinets are really trending right now. So if you haven’t painted them yet, maybe consider just painting the bottom cabinets and see how y’all like that refresh instead. Plus it’s only half the work of painting everything lol

I do have to say I would love to see...
    1. New substantial curtain rods hung all the way up to the ceiling and hitting both walls. Wall to wall floor to ceiling hanging drapes (anything but sheer drapes). Use large panels on eaiter side (not just a thin small panel). This will make the room look bigger and really give a quality look. Recommend a French inverted pleated drape..
    2. Keep all like items together, like the seagulls.

Lol re the beach scene. I don't know how that turns out but you can get a picture that size reproduced on clear or semi-sheer acetate and then have it sandwiched between 2 sheets of glass clipped together (or lucite if glass makes you nervous). That way you don't lose much light and you still have the visual. My sister did this with a hall window where she needed the light but hated the view of her neighbor's driveway and garbage cans.
