    A friend once told me that you spend the first half of your life obtaining things and the second half getting rid of it all. That sure seems true for me. I’m constantly asking myself if a particular item brings me joy or is weighing me down. I declutter every week and still it will take me years to get it all gone.

      Totally agree. Been doing a clean sweep of all belongings, biggest purge of my life. Purged 75% of each area I have covered so far. It has been exhausting work but it is so worth it. When we move we will be thankful we did this. Surprisingly letting go isn't hard, but deciding what to keep is. I have been mentally preparing for a while before I physically began, so I find the process exciting. Good luck. Don't be too hard on yourself.

      I have stuff from my childhood (I’m in college and live at home) but I know when I’m ready to move out/get married I’ll be dumping a lot of that stuff. I want my husband to only deal with my passport, and a carry on. Why do I need to bring my old toys and books, and photo albums? As of now, even my pet stuff I can recreate quickly and cheaply from the dollar store. I have a rabbit so the litter box, and cleaning dustpan I get from dollar tree, and the rest are consumables I can buy when needed (hay, litter). Me, my rabbit in a carrier, and a carry on of clothes and I’m good. Health documents, and any printed information I will be digitizing so no paper needed and boom I’m done.

      I knew I couldn't be the only person feeling that way. It was so upsetting for me to watch all this stuff being moved around and reorganized. It didn't feel like decluttering. It felt like a demonstration of excess and deep psychological issues that make people cling to stuff. This is obviously a young people problem. Minions and Storm Trooper costumes? I'm nearly 60 and at this point in my life I have completely different priorities.

    When possible, the best time to declutter holiday stuff is during that holiday. Last year when I decorated, I was able to see what I used, truly enjoyed, and had space for and everything else I was able to either donate or send to relatives who had a closer connection to the item than I did.

    I think the natural, perhaps only, way of decluttering, is to try to bring like together. How can you know what you want to keep, if you don't know what you have in total? Drag out everything, make a massive mess, sort like with like, and begin the keep and declutter!

    I'm in the middle of my decluttering journey. I have parted with SO many things but still have work to do. Too much storage space encourages keeping too much stuff. The word "stuff" should be a clue to all of us. Think about where that word comes from. It's both a noun and a verb. At one time around 2008, I had a wake-up moment when I counted 70 pairs of pants in my walk-in closet. Yes, that number was a shock to me too. Too many pants, too many shoes, too much Christmas decor, too many dishes, too much of everything led to to realize I was trying to fill some void in my life with STUFF and that I needed to change my thinking.

    I heard several times in the video that it takes people a few passes before being able to let some things go, and this was just the first pass, so we can give these people a break. Also, she mentioned there were piles for donations that had already been taken upstairs, and there was a big pile of stuff for the trash (as an apartment dweller I can testify that you can't just dump stuff).
    Having said all that, one thing I want to point out is that you can't store water in plastic forever, or even between Miami hurricanes. There are collapsible 5 gallon jugs you can buy on Amazon that would be much better for their needs - I've been thinking about getting them myself, because at the very least it saves you having to go buy water at the store with everyone and their brother the day before the hurricane hits.

    I’m seeing some people throwing around the word hoarders here and there. These people have been through a natural disaster and a change in their work situation requiring them to make two offices where there were none. We haven’t even seen their full apartment. While they may have more stuff than some viewers are comfortable with, how about giving them some grace? It’s a very vulnerable feeling to open your home to the internet and invite these types of opinions. Calling someone a hoarder based on a storage unit is not just premature at this point of the declutter, it’s unkind.

I don't decorate for Christmas anymore. Does that make me a sad, lonely grinch or scrooge? Nope. I just found different ways to enjoy the season. A local historic hotel displays numerous decorated trees as part of an annual charity fundraiser. Hot cocoa, my cousins, and a trip to view those trees is very special to me. Our local historic neighborhood decorates for Christmas inside and out and also raises funds to preserve the historic district. These tours start with a Christmas Tea. If it happens to be snowing that day, even better. Christmas concerts, and walking or driving tours to view the decorations others put up? It's all I need. Sorry for the long-winded reply. I felt compelled to say change your view, change your thinking, but don't stop enjoying life. There are just different ways to do it. Hope this observations helps anyone who might be reading.

    You are so amazing wow. I know it's difficult to get rid of memories. When I left home I had about 4 big boxes of them, now, I've gotten it down to a small square trunk (even did a video last year I believe) I try to go through it once a year because they are my memories. What are my kids going to do with it all when I'm gone? Which reminds me, I'm due for another clear out 🤣 the only thing I have stored are suitcases I never use and Christmas. I dont decorate for anything else, that creates too much clutter. I mean what if I have to go to a retirement home? I wont have room for anything. If it cannot be used or displayed, it's gotta go. More people in my opinion need that kind of philosophy. We are a major must have demographic in the western world which in my opinion, is a huge reason why we live paycheck to paycheck. Enough rambles, I'm just so touched you would do this massive job for someone who's been hit by too many disasters. You should wear a Cape. 🤗😍😘💖💖💖💖💖💖

    This is a LOT of stuff. They seem comfortable owning more than they can accommodate because they intend to buy a home. I am thinking they need shelves all along their condo walls - near ceilings to hold books, on walls to hold the collectibles. This situation is what makes me love cellars and garages. Everything seems to have value. Can't wait to see how you attack this. May be dealing with slight hoarder tendencies here...

      THey had all of this up in their extra room, but with the pandemic that extra space became two home offices. I think with their new renos they don't want to put holes in the walls now if they're planning to sell soon. But we will get it all contained as we go!

      Oh you don't wish for more storage, when I started my minimalism journey I thought the same but in the end it's like you said: if you have that space and aren't a hard-core minimalist yet or just a normal person, you will fill that space with stuff. It's just how it is. It's the same reason why minimalists tell you to get rid of flat surface bc they will collect clutter.

    • @Kate.West.
      @Kate.West. 2 года назад +1

      I agree with you, but I think it’s more that I’d quite like a space on ground level that got things like my diy tools, and paint, my push scooter, shopping trolly etc…. Stuff that I use on ground level (we don’t have an elevator) or only once or twice a year so don’t need regular access to. I’m at the point in my flat where I have empty shelves in cupboards etc because I’ve decluttered to just the stuff I need, but it would just be really nice to not have the jars of touch up paint and rollers etc in the same cupboard as my towels 🤣. It’s not that I want more stuff, I think it’s that I’d like to be able to have more designated areas. But that really is a luxury!

    Interrupting cat 🐈 is hilarious. Love it. Great video. When I get back from pet sitting in 9 days I have to carry on building our new flat pack wardrobe. The starter panel that everything else connects to doesn't have the right holes for the dowels so we have to start again and wait for my dad to drill some holes as it won't connect to the top and bottom panel otherwise. I had to take it apart and change it as the instructions meant I used the wrong starting panel as that seemed right until I turned it round to fix the other bits to it. I hoped to get that done and out of the way before my pet sitting booking. I was doing well until I found out the manufacturer didn't put dowel holes in the right one. I wanted to sort through my clothes and get them out of the case and holdalls.

      After loosing most of our belongings in Hurricane Katrina… your mind takes a survival mode approach. First is family, shelter and food. Then there is taking everything you associate with home out to a curb… looking around and everyone is doing the same. No longer do you have your community, buildings, streets, local landmarks. So no real physical home with no familiar physical surroundings. When I came back from evacuation, I could not really tell where we were because there were no lights, no street signs, weird traffic with national guard. It was a disaster. You can’t imagine unless you have experienced it. She is having a hard time actually decluttering because she had lost so much in a rather short amount of time. The emotion of that makes you just stall, preserve life and limb ( you know what I mean)… and regroup…. About that time you are hit again… regroup…They are trying now while it is quiet give her a chance to look through everything and think.
