Mannnnnnn. I slick had to go to Nickelodeon and put on some SpongeBob to calm down after the trauma this show gave me, but what you said. It's a good type of dark, I still loved it. 😂😂
I kinda like how in the end, Muriel was sticking to not eating as many sweets. When Courage came stumbling back, you can see an apple in her hand but Eustace was still not facing his reality, with accepting how he can't fix shit. Not every story has a happy ending for everyone and I like how a kids cartoon kinda shows that, as bleek as that sounds, it's reality.
It's crazy what cartoons were able to get away with. I still remember the episode were Courage and all the villains played dodgeball. I was overly invested in the episode despite knowing everything was going to work out and return to normal by the end. Such a great show
Courage doesn't mean you have no fear. Courage means your fear doesn't stop you. And the titular dog is a perfect example of how true love dispels all fear. "Muriel, I'll save you!"
I have a theory that the kitty monster that courage imagined was a symbolic representation of the main theme of the episode: abuse. How mad dog abused bunny and kitty and how kitty spread that abuse to courage and he is scared it will attack the baggs. By overcoming the abuse on both fronts, courage saves not only his family, but another as well....
~me, who watched a lot of Courage on the late replays of the channel's programming block~ "oh, goodie, I wonder which episode he's gonna talk about" THE MASK ~me, suddenly getting sweaty and a little tense~ "o-o-oh..."
I know this is just speculation, but a number of people have said that s*xual assault and s*x work are also implied, the latter especially. red lights, Mad Dog being Bunny's pimp, Bunny appearing to wear a fur coat, relatively frequently associated with prostitutes. may or may not be intentional, but good food for thought nonetheless. I can see why the creator is surprised that Cartoon Network green lit this episode, but in hindsight, I think it's a good thing. many parents watch cartoons with their kids, and some adult themes are in cartoons (either in subtle adult jokes or things like abuse, as shown in this episode) so that even the parents can enjoy them. in the least, it's a relatively easy to digest illustration of abuse, therefore informing people about it. every person can use knowing how to recognize abuse, except the abusers themselves of course! I love your videos and am legit surprised you're still this small. simply put, your videos' quality, your narration and your avatar being added still makes me think that you've got tens of videos at least. you've got yourself another subscriber! I believe that you're going to be making more videos about our favorite children's cartoons and will give us a new insight, if not refresh our memory! cheers!
I always found it very strange that Courage somehow felt absolute terror for Kitty and yet had enough strength to beat Mad Dog's goons up, who were more intimidating and potentially more stronger than a cat in a mask.
I would love to see you cover the Dexter's Laboratory show one day, especially the unaired episode "Rude Removal" where they actually start cussing in it 😂
My bestie and I had the same bunny and kitty situation. We have been best friends since 6th grade and we’re still best friends to this day. One day she started dating a boy who was very controlling and told her to stop hanging out with me. I didn’t get to see her for a year and it shattered me honestly. I had the same reaction towards men like kitty did with dogs. I hated men for while because of what happened to our friendship. It wasn’t until she went to a different school and made friends who helped her get out that relationship, then I got transferred to that school and we finally reunited again. It’s crazy to think that I watched that episode as kid and then I experienced the exact same situation later in life. I like to think that this episode helped me learn to never give up on your friendships no matter what. Also the episode taught me to never let anyone (even a boyfriend) get in between your friendships and family because having them in your life is more important than having a boyfriend who treats you like dirt.
I love this episode Despite it being dark, it touched on domestic violence and the love between two lgbtq+ people. The creator of Courage confirmed Kitty and Bunny are lesbian. Truly an episode ahead of its time
This is my favorite episode of Courage! One of cartoon's first lesbian couple and it went under CNs nose for forever, I think! Kitty and Bunny FOREVER! ❤❤❤
The allusion to sexual abuse is pretty strong: red lights, Bunny's getup getting out of the car dressed up in pearls and furs with a dead eyed look on her face, how mad dog "took her from a two bit join to a classy act," (she's not holding any instruments, or wearing tap shoes), and most telling of all the cutaway when she gets caught in her escape attempt. She says, "let go of me, Animals you animals!" Also (as mentioned below) she's been soiled in the next scene and "deflowered" in a pot. In any case, this is a really well written episode and deserves the full runtime it received. Thanks for putting a spotlight on this very special episode.
I miss this show so fucking much it's dark yes but it also had charm 😢 that's why courage will always hold a special place in my heart for it's dark atmosphere on some of the many episodes and the dark comedy ❤️
@@JoeRuffler idk why this is actually excited me of you replying me, like i know its weird but you are actually entertaining because you put work and time into your videos and i keep on rewatching them and i really hope you do upload more
i just noticed that that mad dog even after the car crash he is glued right on the front of the train and bunny and kitty are on the same train 😮 run before he recovers girls !
This is one of my all time favorite episode. When I first saw this episode I did not know that Bunny and Kitty were lesbians, but thought they were just only best friends. Courage shows his bravest side ever, but totally get hurt big time.
I never actually saw this one as a kid. I had a crippling fear of porcelain dolls at the time and kitty's mask was too much for me. Saw it a few years ago and loved it. Definitely wouldn't have understood the story nearly as much back then.
I always enjoyed courage for a few different reasons. Courage is a small dog and easily frightened. When you're young, everything is big and scary. No matter what he encountered, he did it because he was brave. This didn't mean that he was frightened. "Courage isn't a lack of fear, but rather the assessment of something else more important than fear." - Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Never really watched courage, wanted to but it was on at odd times or we didnt have the channel. The episode that stuck with me was the one with the hermit who says he ls immortal by living in a dump and the EPA condemn the house.
This is a very well executed episode. I personally appreciate the fact that creator of this show, a man, didn't portray Kitty as "just another bitter and angry feminist", but instead he brought the pain and suffering of being a woman to light with this episode. I especially enjoy Courage in all of this. He didn't go all " Ahh you cats are all the same. Always blaming dogs for everything." or "Well maybe if Bunny just did what she is told, she wouldn't have that kind of problem". He approached this issue with understanding, patience, kindness and compassion. His biological mother and Muriel truly raised him right. That's why he's one of my favourite character in this entire show. This was very rare in the 90's.
I remember watching this and it got me thinking WTF This show was very distressing and I had problems dealing with death when I was young, but I never got that feeling from Courage.
@@JoeRuffler I mean, I always assumed we were supposed to infer they were all dead, including Mad Dog... if most of your car came apart on impact with a moving locomotive you're almost certainly dead. ~and between the X_X faces, and the implication of this being a criminal underboss or successful pimp escalating the danger Courage and Bunny are really in... yeah, I always assumed they dead XD

@JoeRuffler also do research before making "videos" otherwise you'll be out casted like you were in middle school and just because you have followers doesn't mean you are speaking fact or that you are smart
Domestic violence isn't worse than any other type of physical violence or death or murder & we've seen plenty of both in this show so you're guys idea of disturbing is kinda.... ....off!!!!👍😒
It’s disturbing not because of the lack of typical gore and murder, but the reality factor. Mad Dog can be any abuser in your life. For many people, All the traditional violent tropes shown in horror media is simply a fantasy at the end of the day. Most likely, the average human won’t experience that in real life. The reason why the ep has left an impact of viewers is because we can see ourselves in this position, almost everyone knows of a loved one in the family or stories in the news of abusive relationships. How many times have you’ve heard that it’s always the hardest to leave? We never truly get an inside look/portrayal of DV unless you’ve personally been in the situation, and I think it’s both heartbreaking and amazing that the show did this.
Honestly this episode is actually one of my least favorite. 😅 Mostly because Kitty happy ending was undeserved. She did all that crap to Courage and got no consequences. Not only that but Kitty came off as someone who can only fight someone weaker than her (courage) instead of fighting mad dog and saving bunny. 🙄
I really appreciate the nuance that the dynamic between Kitty, Bunny, and Courage allows in this episode. Being a hero isn't always about "fighting the enemy you want to fight" or even necessarily about helping the people you want to help... ...it's about doing what is RIGHT, even if you don't want to... It's about standing up against what's WRONG, even if it helps someone you don't like. Being a hero isnt' a "matter of life and death" ...that's the grand illusion. the truth is, being a hero is purely A MATTER OF LIFE.
I do wish Kitty had gotten a tiny bit to redeem herself narratively... but sadly REALITY isn't always so fantastically fulfilling... sometimes people get past their bigotry without needing a 15 minute plot line on TV... and all that comes out of it is an apology... *AND THAT IS ENOUGH* , who are we to demand their suffering in return?

This was dark for Courage standards. This wasn’t a spooky fictional monster, it was a real-er figurative monster
