- In under 60 seconds, I'm going to show you how easy it is to flush your water heater! Flushing your water heater is one of the home maintenance tasks that is often forgotten. Water Heaters that are never flushed are prone to sediment buildup in the tank and that can cause efficiency issues and even shorten the life of the water heater. Flushing the tank at least once a year can prevent expensive repairs or even replacement costs.
I was told to not completely drain the tank because the liner inside the tank develops micro cracks. The cracks become filled with "sediment" (I think). When you flush this thoroughly there is the possibility of opening these cracks ie developing a leak? Anyway, to extend the life of the HW heater just partially drain it like you showed, for 10 seconds once a year. I'm definitely not picking a fight with you, just clarifying for my self. I manage a few properties.
Hey @TheSeannman, thanks for the comment! I think that might be the first I've heard of a tank developing or opening cracks due to it being drained. I could see that maybe being an issue for units that are a little older though. The most common thing that I've seen for tanks becoming damaged during flushing is that people forget to turn the power source off before draining the water out. The heat causes the tank to crack since there isn't any water to heat inside the tank.
I think those cracks only happen if you've not flushed it for several years. I could be wrong, though. 🤷♂️
oh god I would find a way to break it
It's easier than you think! I believe in you.
@@ryanvargo Im going to try it!! Question, for this reason would a tankless system be better for people who live in areas whith hard water or just shitty water?
You’d still need to flush a tankless water heater if you go that route. If you’re willing to pay the extra cash for a tankless, they’re definitely worth it but still require some maintenance. The process is a little difference but a lot of the tankless units come with flushing kits to help keep it simple.
Are you a plumber?
Nope, just your average joe who does a lot of research and reads through the manual.
