  • Hi lovelies! Today I finally made my video about air layer plant propagation and I'm showing you how to do it on my Umbrella Tree/Schefflera plant. GET EXCITED. This video has been a long time coming, I wanted to make sure I got results before I posted a video on how to do it, that's why I have a little update in there for you! This method works on pretty much ALL plants, some need a little more work than others... (looking at you, Umbrella Tree) If you have a Pothos/Philodendron you can try wrapping one of their nodes and see a root come out without having to "injure" the plant.
    Hope you guys enjoy! THANK YOU again to all my new subs! Welcome to the weird family :)

    I cut a 1/3 wedge at a spot where branch and leaf stem meet, wrap in moist peat moss. Spray with water again(spring water). Wrap in plastic and use a lil electric tape instead of ties. Leave 12 weeks with occasion mist on peat moss. I have a 8 foot two branch. Ty for the awesome ideas cause mine is 18 years old so I gotta have a few babies from her. Wish I could post a picture 😢

    Its nice to see others are using this method. Even just using it on any plants with nodes helps for an easier transition to soil, faster root growth, and it still continues growing. Benefits all around. I did a video on it with my Philodendron Green and Red Emeralds awhile back haha

    I use the same method, but with a different way of exposing the stem. I use the craft knife. Remove a leaf/branch. Make a small, shallow, upward cut in the stem just below the node of the removed leaf. Wedge a short length of matchstick or Sphagnum moss in the cut to stop it closing and self healing. Don't cut too deep. Then do as you do using Sphagnum moss and plastic wrap. Ordinary multi-purpose compost will do also.

    This is so helpful and interesting! Thank you!
    I also was wondering what your advice is for umbrella trees that are HELLA root-bound. I'm talking a big old brick of roots. I inherited my plant Rod from a dive bar, from a bartender of the same name, and so I love this plant. However, it only has two stems coming out of the root-bound dirt, and the stems are both quite woody and sad-looking. It put out a couple new leaf whorls when I first adopted it, but it hasn't for months now. I was thinking I needed to root-prune it, but now I'm reading people's articles saying umbrella trees LIKE to be ROOT-BOUND?! Any perspectives you have to share for this particular situation would be so appreciated!!! Do I just need to repot it?
    I love your channel. You're chill af and your cat is nice. Thanks for doing what you do!

      Kelly anderson I just saw this.yes and no on the root bound.If she has that much roots and you aren't getting leaves.It's cause she needs repotting and they are drinkers.Thursty needers.Move up to next pot size even doulbe it if it is that root bound.Befor water here and keep chk.on her after she's hydrated.Also look@ the Swedish plant guy channell.He's wonderful and just put out vid.on the umbrella. Best of wish's😊✌🌹🌹

    i tried this and left it for a couple weeks but so far nothing. i dont think i stabbed the correct area since i did it at the topmost layer of the plant and i dont remember if it had the tiny bumps where the roots would grow:( but i did do it at the node between two stemps (?)

    I love your videos - they are helpful as well as entertaining. I have a question though, about stem propagation. Is it possible to successfully propagate a schefflera, using stem propagation?

    • @Macksimize100
      @Macksimize100  2 года назад +1

      Thank you!! And yes! Definitely can be done, it takes a little longer for Schefflera in my experience than other plants but it is possible

  • @kheiner5554

    So helpful!!! Do you think I could do this on a portion of the stem that is already woody? 🧐

    • @Macksimize100
      @Macksimize100  3 года назад

      Yes for sure! You might have to scrap the stem a little further down but this will definitely work regardless. People use this technique on full grown outdoor trees sometimes !

    Someone is giving me theirs because it hasn't branched out. It's just one long stem and set of leaves and today one of the leaves broke off. How can I encourage it to branch out?

    • @emmaandrews8390
      @emmaandrews8390 3 года назад

      I have the same with my schefflera. It’s just one long stem that keeps growing up and up. I’ve just snipped off the top to propagate the cutting and hoping it will mean the original stem will now change shape

    • @Angela-fq9sn
      @Angela-fq9sn 3 года назад

      They don't branch out. The plant has a stem that continues tot grow taller. You can place more the one stem into a pot to make ik look fuller. They often sell them with 3 stems braided togheter.

    Hi there- wonderful idea here. I feel a little lost- when did you apply the moss (sphaegem moss right?) was it after the wetted paper towel or before the wetted paper towel/plastic?

    • @Macksimize100
      @Macksimize100  3 года назад

      Hey! So you don’t have to use moss if you don’t have any! Just wet paper towel works by itself directly on the branch wrapped in plastic OR you can do wetted sphagnum moss directly on the branch wrapped in plastic!

    How do you sanitize your blade/scissors?

  • @ireneburdgick9700
    @ireneburdgick9700 4 года назад

    I hear you say sterilized the blade. Why is that?

    • @Macksimize100
      @Macksimize100  4 года назад

      It just prevents the spread of any diseases if you use the blade on other plants or home objects that might have different substances on them!
