  • 2002 Wrangler (32RH) transmission leak. Could not seem to figure out what was leaking. Thought it was the pan/seal, almost changed it but decided to wrap all the possible spots that could leak with paper towels to verify they were not leaking and dripping down on the pan making it look like that is what was leaking. Turned out to be the shift shaft seal (quite common I am told), part cost less than $2 and took about an hour all and all. This is the spot where the shifter goes into the transmission and it is on the left side of the transmission under the drivers seat.
There is a part you can order to get the seal out a little easier than I did it, it’s $20 and I didn’t want to wait. YMMV

    thanks a lot, man!
I've read somethere that you got to completely take off the transfer case in oreder to change that seal.
And looks like there are no other vids on RUclips picturing the changing of that seal. So you just made this much easier for me. Thanks again!

Thanks! Great video. Gotta do mine... already did the pan gasket (and band adjust while i was in there...poor 1-2 shift resolved) to realize it was the pan leaking...

Had the same issue on my 97 Dodge truck...Snap On makes a tool for removing the seal but it is like $150...Took my truck to Transmission shop and had it fixed for around $150 bucks...They had the tool...Worth just paying someone to get it done...1 hour of labor and a $6 part...Done in 2022

Thank you for the video! Changed mine out today on my 99 Jeep Wrangler Sport 32rh automatic transmission. Seal- Pioneer 759037 from O'Reilly's is it.
Also, be sure to take plenty of pictures before you start. The spring that you need to remove from the shift linkage came off from the front and had fun locating the hole to reinstall. Light and an inspection mirror were very useful btw.
    Thanks again!

I'm also looking for the reeference of this seal. Are you sure it is Seal- Pioneer 759037 from O'Reilly?

Yes, for the 32rh transmission. O'Reilly's gave me one originally that was silver and thicker than the brass looking 759037 narrower one.

Great video! I'm about to have to do this as well, do you have to drain the transmission to replace the seal?

Nope! All I did was drop the skid plate. It is really tough to see up there, you are really just going by feel. Mirrors might be able to help you out as well. Others dropped the drive shaft so they can get their head up there - I took some pics and really just went by feel, really not that hard to do at all. Start to finish I think it took me an hour and I really took my time. Should be a 10-20 min job honestly.

hey bud, great vid, having same problem in my zj, did you drop your tranny a bunch to get room to get in there to get the two bolts to the linkages off, ie after 1:24 on the vid?, could only drop my tranny a couple inches but might have made the difference, got it done, major struggle with no room for hands, cant see much, oh well, done, and no more leak, yay, new seal goes in reasonably easy, just used a 1/2 ich drive socket that pushed over it, not sure diam, anyway easy to figure out diameter with new seal, pushed seal in with tranny fluid on it, easy to start in then just use hand to knock all the way in with socket hitting it from above

I did not drop it, other than the little it comes down after you take off the skid plate. And yes, pretty much all feel and using my phone to see as much as I could as I was going along. I did try a mirror but it didn’t help much either.

Where do you buy the tool for the jeep transmission

The seal? The local O’Reillys Auto Shop had it. I didn’t use any other special tools, just a small screw driver to coax out the old seal and the socket to help tap in the new one.
