Ok this is ridiculous. I bought a used one. Yesterday. With intent to install Lineage. You are insane.
Lol, hopefully this tutorial helps you then.
He was the botnet all this time
@Tube of the Viper xda provides an extensive list of compatible devices. If it's not there you can check the documentation for building lineage for your device. That if you are feeling lucky lol.
@Tube of the Viper if you look every device has nightly builds, including 7pro
@Tube of the Viper nightly is not thaaaat bad, but be careful, read what's working on your device
The reason Google pixel phones are popular for roms is because they have an unlocked bootloader by default and are just genuienly easier to develop for
they aren't unlocked by default but yeah pretty easy to unlock
They are also more secure than most devices, alot of android phones are really lacking in security at the hardware level.
@@ZambonieDude This is something I've been thinking of as well. Elaborate more and explain in detail please.
@@therealb888 grapheneOS website has a large "why pixel" section. Basically Google makes Pixels to advertise android to developers, so they also need to showcase latest security features. And less bloatware
@Quiet Kid in School he didn't say Privacy he said Security, and yes pixels have the best built in security as they are the first to get software updates as other android manufacturers lag behind weeks or even months. Also believe it or not Google doesn't sell your data to third parties, they use your data to target advertising to you, and sell ad space to advertising companies.
I laughed when you said that you used a mixture of various guides. That is exactly how it goes for me when I do this. Hit and miss every time.
That's coz pc folks don't really understand the smartphone platform
I've run both Lineage and Calyx. While I can see the irony in using google hardware it's one of the only devices which can re-lock the bootloader after installing a custom operating system. It also receives security updates sooner and for longer than most other devices. Calyx comes stock with MicroG meaning it's more "degoogled" than most lineage phones where the user has likely flashed openGapps. On the other hand Lineage is much more customizable, I can flash different packages on top of the OS like gapps and fdroid's privileged extension, as well as having root access and a custom recovery. Really comes down to which is more important to you.
The background music is on point!
Adventure surfing the web! Just like the good old days
I installed LineageOS on my phone earlier in the year. I got lucky and did it first try, but I had to look up multiple guides as well. And all of them are in text, so I'm never too sure if I'm doing it right, especially when it comes to handling the TWRP GUI. But when it finally booted, I was so happy! Free from the glowies at last!
are you me?
Not the glowies but Google, yeah. LineageOS is not meant to be secure
You should use really any OS besides Lineage, as it's complete garbage. It's essentially just a modernized version of that bullshit ass Cyanogenmod.
Thank you SO MUCH!! After guide, after guide, after guide, finally found you and these instructions were flawless! You, my friend, have earned a subscribe.
This video worked great, everyone else forgets to mention some steps or its just downright confusing, this taught me how to install different OS'S and also got me being able to flash kernals and boot phones too!
Actual banger Mr.Outlaw, good stuff
The good all days of tinkering with your phones. I still remember rooting my old LG g4. I still have an old V30 with custom room and everything.
Unfortunately the list of devices which you can tinker with is getting smaller each year, quite sad.

Glad I did
My exact phone, I'm so happy to see this. Thanks a lot man
I have a 1+6 and was gonna install a custom ROM. Good to have a great video explaining the process.
I am super happy to see this. After the antiracism training from Google broke today, I resolved to begin taking the steps to escape the Google machine. I don't see the problem with reflashing Google hardware though; especially because I want to get my hands on a foldable running Graphene or LineageOS. I have a Oneplus 7 Pro I run as my daily driver, I'll give this a shot!
omg, did Google come this far?
@@purplep3466 Not sure if you're talking in terms of the Church of Woke or technological advancement. For the former, the writing's really been on the wall since the Damore memo. For the latter, the rumored Pixel Passport is thought to be built on Samsung's OLED folding tech.
The only way is having 2 phones. One with Google Play services for apps that run on Google service framework or Google cloud messaging. Since everything has an app now.
And have another phone thats completely open source.
You could use a phone with MicroG installed to spoof phone signature but closed source apps that use Google services are just as bad.
I dont see anti racism being a problem. The main reason i try to degoogle stuff is for privacy but hey, you do you

I just did this myself with no Gapps. I just degoogled it. Wish I found your video first! Very helpful video.
I've tried following guides to root my device and I can understand how hard it was for you. Thanks for the video :)
Just I consider buying this phone used, you come out with a tutorial. Nice.

btw i have the same phone and oneplus peaked at on 7pro :))
i keep on flashing different roms though lmao
Thank you. I'll use your guide tonight. Last night I bricked it and just got it unbricked as well. I think my mistake started when trying to install TWRP after I had already booted into LineageOS, and then I kept making further mistakes from there.
Stoked!! A Mental Outlaw video popping right up about exactly the phone I just bought with exactly the ROM I want to put on it!
Perfect.
I do like the idea of liberating used google hardware found on feebay or whatever. I'd never purchase it new, though, and would feel slightly ashamed about participating in the used sales market -- but buying several models back for a song is OK I think.
Looking forward to replicant hopefully getting more compatible hardware on it's roster -- or phones being built with it.
I also might splash out on a PinePhone for possibly some real privacy/security etc, and just use my Oneplus for media etc.
Everyone, you are supposed to type fastboot flash recovery then drag TWRP and press enter. You are not supposed to type fastboot flash boot TWRP.img, it flashes it to the kernel. The recovery is not supposed to be flashed to that, it's known to cause a boot-loop.
the main reason people go for pixels for CaylxOS or GraphineOS is because unlocking the bootloader is super easy
like literally just open the developer setting and click unlock
and then you can just run their script using webusb and install their OS without the need for TWRP
Part of the issue too is that the bootloader can be relocked to verify integrity, at least that's part of the stated reason for CalyxOS and GrapheneOS. Whether that's the entire reason only the Pixel line is support is unknown to me.
@@hsoj9550 Another benefit from a development standpoint is that google lets you reinstall Pixel Experience via their website as well so if you do mess up the install or you break your custom rom in development you haven't bricked the phone
@@GlenMerlin OnePlus also has stock ROM downloads on their website
@@hsoj9550 it's because of the Titan security chip. Other phones do not have this.

Important step!!!!
If you flash TWRP to boot_a partition instead of boot_b, you will softbrick the phone. (I did this lol)
Make sure your slot is set to B.
Type "fastboot set_active b" before you type "fastboot flash boot"
Hello I just did this. I installed the img file on slot a. I really do not know what to do now. How did you solve the issue? Please help!
Hello can you tell me how you solve the softbrick?

I've tried using the "fastboot set_active b" but get an error about not able to use slot b and I cant seem to switch to slot b, could I also install twrp on slot b and then install rom?
@@nessarce6766 You forgot to add =
Funny, I was planning on doing this to my 6T in the following weeks. Guess I'll follow along to this!
thanks , steps worked great.
Love the OSRS music in this tutorial
thanks brother, you saved my day !!!
I love this 😍
I also am looking into using LineageOS with MicroG daily instead of CalyxOs because of lower price, have it installed on my OnePlus One, runs great.
Would love to see a video where you go over how you use your phone, what apps and how they’re setup. Cheers!
The reason to use a Pixel phone is because they are the only phones with proper development documentation and third party signature signing, your phone is much less secure if you are using a rom with twrp rather than something like a Pixel with GrapheneOS or Calyx.
Thanks for the info
I installed lineageos on my brother redmi 6 before it was so laggy and barely usagable but after installing it's working buttery smooth!
I kinda want to install Lineage on my OnePlus 6t, but the new OxygenOS 11 update is so nice, plus I don't wanna risk messing anything up since this is my daily driver.
Warning! DO NOT try to lock the bootloader again, this will brick your phone hard (I did it like a noob)
Thankfully there is a solution, hold the volume down, volume up, and power button all at the same time for a few seconds, this will boot you into fastboot. From there you can go to the terminal on your pc and unlock the oem. Good luck fellow plebs.
Sorry can u explain how did you fix it?
@@Dani-of8hs I did, did you read the whole comment? Basically hold all the buttons until it goes into fastboot, then go to your computer, and unlock the oem through the terminal, that will unbrick it. You might have to re-install the rom if it doesn't work properly.
@@twelve535 thanks for the info
Was considering relocking the bootloader again. Thanks for this
Does banking apps work on lineage
This video is an absolute godsend
the reason why they use google hardware is because, sadly, is from the few that are way more secure due to the usage of signed images and stuff like that, but yeah, lineage is also a great option
Does the Custom use the other camera lenses or only the main?
Just installed LineageOS on a OnePlus 3T (2016) and now runs like a charm

Nice Video! I just installed LineageOS on my OnePlus 5 last week. Couldn't stand the constant updating and Google bloatware. It's better than before!
Couple of questions if anyone knows -
1. Why TWRP? I installed the new ROM and Recovery from the Lineage site. Isn't that enough? Not sure what TWRP offers that the Lineage recovery doesn't.
2. Web browser included is Chromium (Google without the "Google"?)
Also -- Instead of making selections with the Volume Up/Down button, you can also just touch the screen.
Great ROM and really agree the Pixels are overrated.
@pm4rcin Thank you for this explanation! I never thought of that. There's also a browser called "Privacy browser" that's really good.
And thanks for the explanation about the two different recovery options. 👍
Are you still able to use navigation gestures instead of the nav buttons at the bottom with lineage? (Like swiping from the left or right of the screen to go back and up from the bottom to go home)
Yes
Lineage OS is pretty stable- have it installed on my pi400 .
Have a OP 8t and was wondering why the Lineage Os can't just be flashed in Twrp, then reflash twrp in order not to have the lineage os recovery? Had no problems unlocking bootloader and flashing Twrp but an actual Rom seems to be more of a problem? Do you have to do sideload when there is twrp that does all the work of flashing?
Great video, i used to use CyanogenMod on my OP2.. havent used since then. Now I am thinking of installing a custom rom on my OP7 pro running A10. Wanted to check your experience.. How is the camera ? Are there any wifi issues? Have you rooted the phone , if yes then any issues with any apps ?
I maybe wrong but OnePlus and Pixel's bootloaders are easy to unlock so they are famous in custom ROM community and why Pixels are more used because they allow re-locking your bootloader after installing custom ROM, so you'll have verified boot and this helps if your not planning to root your phone since many banking(payment etc) apps check for verified boot.
Note: you can install custom ROM without rooting your device and re-locking bootloader helps in this case.
sounds about right, but all the pixels have overpriced hardware so I'd rather just leave my bootloader unlocked.
@@MentalOutlaw + If you're using banking apps, they'll be checking for SafetyNet, which can't work without GApps, so yeah
Though Custom ROM developers can fool it to pass via PixelPropsUtils being included in the OS
Two questions? Was the extra step due to it being T-Mobile, and I have the McClaren Edition of the Oneplus 6T. From what I've read they're basically the same except the McClaren has 10 gig of ram. Any idea if this would work on the 6T McClaren Edition?
am actually waiting for the Jing os so I can install it on my main machine,,, but this one seems interesting as well, hope u make a video reviewing the os itself cuz for me, this is the first time knowing it exists, unfortunately its a little bit hard to install
How well is jingos code auditted?
Gonna try this on my 5T. Thx.

I installed Lineage on my $100 Xiaomi Redmi 7A, and it's the best phone I have ever had. Before this I was using phones which were like $300 (some with better specs), but I still wouldn't switch.
Custom roms are awesome not gonna lie

i really want to know if there's an better way of taking a backup of my phone other than copying everything from the internal storage folder to my computer (i know that i don' neet to copy everything, i'm not that dumb)
i want to know if there ir like a built in command or a third party app that can copy files and apps from my old phone to my new one, like... installing my apps automatically like cloning a hard drive idk
nope, haven't found any besides Titanium backup. Since I'm on Calyx (uhh the overrated Pixels can ACTUALLY do more for the money) it runs their own backup extension you can sync to your own nextcloud instance. It's really neat, since you never have to worry about backups again. It just works :)

Am I right i thinking that you have to install twrp befoe lineage OS? That's how I did it on my OnePlus One, and it worked a treat. I recently bought a OnePlus 6T (UK version) and was unable to install twrp. As you said, none of the written tutorials covered this clearly enough and even though I followed some that suggested using ADB to install twrp temporarily and then flash it once it loaded, it did not work for me. I had no issues installing LineageOS and I even tried to install twrp afterwards using the temp install, booting into recovery (this worked) but was undable to install twrp permanently. Very frustrating! LineageOS 18.1 runs smoothly. On the OnePlus One (only one partition unlike the OnePlus 6T, which has two) I was able to use twrp to install magisk and root my device. Wish I'd seen your demo before I did my 6T, because you covered adb steps that were missing from the other tutuorials.
I just wanted to ask if this exact guide will work for my OnePlus 6T. Because no matter where i turn to try to root it and following a guide, the guide is not in any way complete and has added links to other steps I need to follow before doing their steps and so on. For not mentioning all Linux guides that expect you to know everything about Linux.

It's kind of annoying now that LineageOS and CalyxOS only support such few phones. I remember earlier you could install custom ROMS on even budget phones.
@@ungeskriptet Huawei devices are a lost cause because you cannot unlock the bootloader, but many budget xiaomi phones have official LineageOS support, provided that they have a Snapdragon SoC.
well, if the other manufacturers didn't shit out 500 devices a year without documentation and always changing small details about the hardware, we would see more supported devices. You can thank Xiaomi and Samsung for that.
I get all the way to flashing TWRP and that's where I have my issues. My CMD Prompt on Windows 10 just says "< waiting for any device >" now and won't ever load TWRP onto it. Any ideas? I'm on a Zenfone 6.
You're doing this to a phone, but are still using Win 10 LOL Change to Linux Mint first, then do this to the phone. Like that your all private, no more spy's.
Will this work with the Sprint version? One Plus 7 pro 5G ?
It's interesting you used TWRP to do this. The instructions on the LineageOS website, at least for the OnePlus 6T, which is what I have, don't use it as far as I remember. The instructions there just involve using the terminal with the LOS zip and recovery image. Did you try that as well, assuming it's the same process for the 7 Pro like it is the 6T? Just asking cause I'm gonna be installing LOS on my 6T here shortly.
It doesn't matter whether you elect to use Lineage recovery or TWRP. If you don't need any advanced features from the recovery, just use the LineageOS one, it has better OTA support and will automatically update with each system update
@@martinytcz1762 Yeah, I was gonna ask about that as well. I'd read online you need to use the LineageOS recovering image to enable OTA support, which I definitely do want. I'm not super happy about giving up some of the features of OxygenOS, but I'm hoping maybe I can add back some of those features once I'm on LOS.
Are you aware of any way to add back some features of OxygenOS to LOS? Or is it just gonna be a search and see kind of thing?
@@hsoj9550 If you don't like the simplicity of LineageOS, there are many other ROMs, though most are focused on feeling like a Pixel, not on privacy, however, there are many more than Lineage which still keep privacy in mind, look around xda, you'll find many options
@@martinytcz1762 Ok, I'll do that! At the end of the day I do value privacy over form, but that also doesn't mean I wanna give up on form completely either. So at the *very* least I'll be using LineageOS, cause I don't trust the current Google-centric stock OxygenOS, but will see if another exists that gives a good de-Googled experience with good features too! Thanks for the help! :)
Alright question. How do you lock the bootloader once you install lineage. As far as i researched, having an unlocked bootloader can allow anyone with access to your phone access to your files.
Calyx is the only OS that supports relocking the bootloader for 100% security isnt it?
Btw thanks for the tutorial. Going to hunt for a good oneplus7 soon thanks to this
I don't ever keep sensitive files on any cellphone.
you can relock it on grapheneos too

Don't keep any sensitive data on any phone. Also data is encrypted in newer Android versions so they have to unencrypt them even if they could extract internal storage and data partitions.

This has been my favorite phone for a while now, mostly because of it's uninterrupted screen and display over USB. Unfortunately, it's display out doesn't auto scale and takes some more tinkering when everyone else figured out black bars suck a long time ago
I hope that more LG phones get support for lineage OS because they have been getting cheaper ever since LG mobile left the space
These OnePlus phones run Lineage really very well.
My Oneplus 7 Pro, after going through all steps, hangs at the boot process with the Lineage green curved line and the moving circle. Thoughts?
U even put deep fake into reflection, that’s commitment
I've had my 7pro since new and still working perfectly on oxygenOS. But how ever when the software support ends this is where I'd like to move with it. LinageOS is really the only ROM I've Experimented with.
