*Pimp* Watching back the footage you got, two areas stand out above the others. 1) Camera is too tight, lacks dynamism and my mind immediately wrote pseudocode in my head along the lines of 'when character is 50 units distance from the X axis surface, move camera in opposing direction and change camera focal length to 27 degrees, but maintain the crosshair position, and zoom in closer to the character'. Another angle would've involved adding a high amount of motion blur when doing a roll, but simply that the camera didn't seem to smoothly tie in with the action. The choice of weapon should match the camera type, focal length etc...all those awesome katana moves and the camera was being operated by an overly robotic and 'perfect' camera operator. Too tight. The opposite of this would be watching the meteorologist on television explain the weather for the next 24 hours, but the camera operator was John Woo and Rock Music is playing, loud. Definitely you could use trigger volumes to switch between TOP camera and 3RD person, or just use it to PUSH-PULL the camera with blends and overlaps between volumes. This is an interactive movie, and you are the director telling the captive audience where to look. 2) A simple colouring system for when you're under threat from a direction can be simply done with a 'heat' system on the character. Make it grow in strength and contrast in whatever way you think suits the game. Maybe a simple red colour starts as a small patch on the character and grows in size and deepens until crimson red.
0:56 yea "your people" on twitch are idiots. These negative people say it doesn't work/won't work... until it works. Literally the best advantage of indie devs have over big companies is having the flexibility and be very experimental with ideas.
I believe this is definitely something you should keep working on in the future. Not only does it look really promising even in this experimental state, but a third person mode would bring a lot more interest to the game as I think a top-down perspective might discourage a lot of people from giving it a go
this Top-down to third person also adds replay ability you can play the whole game top down with all guns then playthrough it all again in third person, anyone who games often would love both styles.
I actually bought the game right now after watching this video, didn´t knew it existed and feels like a game that deserves to be supported. And I do think that (as a John Wick fan) a 3rd person camera would be awesome to have aside from the top down perspective.
Thank you! Both perspectives will be available at all times, the goal is to make it as easy as possible for the player to switch between the two using a hotkey as well.
Visually speaking in 3rd person, the game looks way better. In TPS the environments feel too empty and basic but here they have way more depth and interesting even if the art style is minimalistic/simple. Good job there, keep pushing and if you end up doing Suit for hire 2, then I'd like to see fully embracing the 3rd person aspect.
Synthetik dev here, don't make the mistake of going top down, keep the third person it has 10x the market appeal and is not that much more work. You'll regret it later otherwise.
I like this perspective. One thing to note: If your main focus is top down, then focus on refining that. I do appreciate an experimental third person mode but with a warning that it's experimental and it's buggy. Then after all the main parts of the game is completed, then work on the 3rd person mode later on.
I admire your hunger for experimenting, it really does look impressive already especially knowing this is a game built as a top-down shooter first. I'm part of the top-down shooter niche and consider Hotline Miami 1 & 2 as two of my all time favorites, but I also love Max Payne and something like this also fulfills that niche too. I'm excited to see how you develop this further!
Its defiantly worth the inclusion, What a epic enhancement! If scope is a problem (eg. Redoing all the Levels), why not create Unique situations where this 3rd Person mode happens, Unique levels and gameplay tailored to the 3rd Person mode, Its always fun having a switch up! it Looks practically finished BTW, you got ALL the bits their, should be Proud of yourself m8
I havn't played it in a WHILE, this is a literal game changer, I think it's an awesome idea that will bring many players into it. I'll check it out now, thanks for the update!
Honestly that looks sick! As much as I bought your game because it was doing the top down thing and I wanted to learn how to do it right, the vibe works just as well, if not a bit better, as a third person shooter. Unreal from my experience also loves to tie a lot of logic to the position of the camera so it might make implementing some stuff easier, foliage in particular if you want your grass to look good with a minimum of effort. I also tried something similarly crazy with my top-down game by adding a first person Unrecord-esque bodycam angle, but I decided against it because I'd have to rebuild too much and I want the game to be playable by people with motion sickness.
Oh I remember watching your devblogs 2 years ago. Where you added destruction to the walls etc. I was rly impressed. Until I realized you made it top down. I completely lost interest in that project (just not my thing^^ especially after so many games I wished where 3rd or first person went top down) NOW Im completely back on board and gonna buy it :D Good that the algorithm knows what I like and got me back to your channel/game ;D
Wow, looks like a totally different game and am certain this will bring a lot more players. Just showed my girlfriend and she was like damn that's the same game? Yeah your levels, and even the messy animations, look amazing I'm sure you'll work out the details real soon looking forward to playing some time hope you stick to this design and also keeping top down is nice really adds another whole level of gameplay having the 2 modes great stuff!
Honestly not a fan of top down perspective games. But seeing this randomly pop up on feed and hearing you speak about it being your first release and with third person….i’ll buy it to support. Much love
I've added tpp to my isometric game too! Also added fpp and top down cams. Wouldn't say it works super good in my game, but it's a cool addition for variety.
As someone who has just stumbled across this, with no context of this game prior, the third person looks amazing. I love top down games, hotline miami is peak gameplay to me, but the game looks much more dynamic in third person. Like he verticality added just from the change in camera is huge. I dig it.
Just got done trying it out and honestly if the animations get smoothed out or re-worked it’s a solid experience. The real issue is taking hits from behind, if you gave Mr. Suit like a spider sense marker or a directional ring that points to offscreen danger you’d do 3ps mode a true service
John wick is known for interesting camera angles so you could have the perspective change at certain points in the game. For example a hoard of enemies come at you and then it switches to top down while you aggressively shoot them all and in more chill environments it's third person. Maybe this could solve the shooting from behind problem too since there would be less enemies when in third person mode.
There actually is another instance of this - there's a power-up in Black Ops 3's "Dead Ops 2" arcade mode that lets you go into first-person. It doesn't alter things nearly as heavily as yours, but it was a neat bonus!
great idea, we need more max payne like games. EDIT: also there's alotta top down shooters already out there. I hardly ever see any indie third person, linear shooter games like this. The only one that comes to mind is El Paso.
The 3rf person lokk very cool and fluent with character when he's moving that's you can't see in top down view I suggest top-down be an advantage for player to know enemies place
The only other time I've really seen this done for a top-down was the tpp/fpp mod for Hatred. It was done pretty well, fair amount of jank and a lot of similar challenges to the one you described but I was really impressed by it and I'm getting the same vibe here. Cool project, put it on my steam wishlist and look forward to seeing your progress.
Also to add further, I've been eyeing this game for like 2 years but was always hesitant to buy it since I'm not a huge fan of top down shooters but I'll 100% be buying this when the 3rd person mode is polished.
Switching shoulders while aiming would be GREAT (like Rogue Company) Also 7:00 you should make enemy indicators like in God of War (2018) Some whote arrows that show where the offscreen enemies are, the arrows blink red when offscreen enemy is preparing an attack Game looks sick btw! 🔥
Some top down games after a while (and if they get modding support) will have a first person mod, so having an official first person mode is very very good i think adding that option when you start the game could be very good to the game Like you start the game and before it begins you have some options to activate and it could be a button that says "gameplay" you could toggle from original to first person
Bro made John Wick the game 🔥🔥🔥 also this is MUCH BETTER The customer is NOT always right. Go with your intuition. People dont know what they want until you show them
Also the bullet speed feels perfectly fine for me. Don't care for a slowmo gimmick and I can see y I'm losing, imo the slow and methodical look but chaotic feel is what sells this.
Definitely need a 3d person John Wick style game that looks like this and not Max Payne though :D loving the setting and the combat, wishlisting right away!
Dude! Ummm I think that should be the default. It looks fkn awesome. Obviously quite a big deal to orient the whole game to third person. But I’m glad you will make it an option.
Think chivalry 2 or re8 for example a lot of people argue on whats better when it comes to first and third person in that a lot of people also only play in first or third person because of how much they prefer that i’d say add this it adds a lot of customisation & settings to the mechanics which is always really cool to have, it adds a lot of replayability and has also actually sold me on finally getting the game even when i’ve been considering doing so for a while
I mean.... personally I think this would sell a lot better if even only just a option. I don't really care for top downs but it looks really interesting to me in 3rd person.
there was old game about the demolition man movie where you play in two perspective side scrollin and half through the game it changes to top down perspective you can do similar thing
Maybe add laser pointers to all enemy guns in third person and the circle filling up/shrinking to where the laser hits the player character if the enemy is behind you/ out of view. This way you might not need to tweak the ai.
Just bought your game, i hope you keep working on this 3rd person mode because it looks very promissing. I think there are alot of people that will buy the game with the full 3rd person mode
Cheers! I think it's pretty evident that a lot of people are liking the 3rd person mode so it'll be fleshed out further and released alongside the regular top-down camera for the 1.0 update.
keep both perspectives, i like the idea of a game letting you do a run of a short level and then you can save the replay to view in both perspectives 0:38
I think both are dope. I prefer top down for a more tactical game. Is there a version that is one shot kill for yourself? And swapping shoulders and stuff and is super hard?
Maaan, you just gotta create a uniqe and standing out storyline for that game, cuz the gameplay is awesome and all you need to stand out your game is a plot that will interest comunity or rather just be something uniqe, it is absolutely perfect new days, people now desire unique things
1:18 This is/was (havent played in a long time) also present in Payday 2. I remember reading something about the AI targeting the players camera which is the head but im no dev so im not sure 7:00 Darktide has soundcues before you're about to get shot/hit just throwing some ideas 😉
I forgot to say 'like, subscribe, comment' and all that typical sh*t, so uh... anyways... what do you think of the 3rd person mode?
*Pimp*
Watching back the footage you got, two areas stand out above the others.

Looks responsive and tight as hell. Edit - yes you were going for 'John Wick simulator ' lol
nice mealy combat
Significantly better than top down. I'd say stick to that. It honestly screams John Wick and I love it.
It looks so much cooler as an third person shooter
For sure
Sooo much cooler
I believe this is definitely something you should keep working on in the future. Agreed. It’s like 2 different games in one.

Handing over full camera control to the player with third-person has made a world of difference
It looks like Sifu, but with guns.
Also feels like Super Hot
Thats just Max Payne
This will appeal to a broader audience I think, looks sick so far, John wick simulator. Keep going bud.
You'll regret it later otherwise.
most faithful wick-like ive ever played, downloading the test branch now! Never expected this
I like this perspective. One thing to note: If your main focus is top down, then focus on refining that. I do appreciate an experimental third person mode but with a warning that it's experimental and it's buggy. Then after all the main parts of the game is completed, then work on the 3rd person mode later on.
Wtf. You are one guy developing this? Why are you better than most AAA? Those animations are amazing.
Looks sick in 3d person!
I admire your hunger for experimenting, it really does look impressive already especially knowing this is a game built as a top-down shooter first. the fact you can change between the 2 views is the first ive ever seen before, i like the variability and it makes you stand out like crazy
I havn't played it in a WHILE, this is a literal game changer, I think it's an awesome idea that will bring many players into it.
I'll check it out now, thanks for the update!

As an Third person shooter this has so much potential, i loved the details you added to make it look as cool as possible.
Looks very promising so far.
Just remember a crucial feature of 3rd person shooters: Shoulder switch.
On the to-do list 🤘
Oh I remember watching your devblogs 2 years ago. Where you added destruction to the walls etc. I was rly impressed. Until I realized you made it top down. HOLY SHIT I LOVE SUITS FOR HIRE, i actually just came upon your channel, and now I am looking forward to third person in the game!
Shot feedback looks really awesome, amazing work!
Wow, looks like a totally different game and am certain this will bring a lot more players. Just showed my girlfriend and she was like damn that's the same game? Honestly not a fan of top down perspective games. But seeing this randomly pop up on feed and hearing you speak about it being your first release and with third person….i’ll buy it to support. Much love
props to you for experimenting, it's great that you had fun too, it reminds me that how to survive did it too (despite the mixed reviews)
I've added tpp to my isometric game too! Also added fpp and top down cams. Wouldn't say it works super good in my game, but it's a cool addition for variety.

I love top down games, hotline miami is peak gameplay to me, but the game looks much more dynamic in third person. Like he verticality added just from the change in camera is huge. I dig it.
The third person view actually capture the vibe of shooting. You should continue work on this aspect. Also make the enemies difficult.
Just got done trying it out and honestly if the animations get smoothed out or re-worked it’s a solid experience. The real issue is taking hits from behind, if you gave Mr. Suit like a spider sense marker or a directional ring that points to offscreen danger you’d do 3ps mode a true service
I'm a huge fan of top down games, but I gotta say, this in 3rd person looks amazing. The true John Wick like game we all needed.
i like the top down version but this 3rd person mode looks amazing. please keep it.
Love your passion for this project. Keep going man! Will definitely keep supporting!
I think opening it to third person makes it more appealing for a wider group. I agree that top down is a niche. I like this addition
Looks good brother, never hurts to have options.
It surprising worked well in 3rd person. With a few small tweeks it will be a worth while addition.
You're in good company! My action RPG has 4 different view modes, and its absolutely worth the extra work.
some of those chained-together headshots were insane mr. dev
hey thanks, it's some of my leftover gaming skills that's slowly withering away
You just made the game more fun I'll be sweating now
There actually is another instance of this - there's a power-up in Black Ops 3's "Dead Ops 2" arcade mode that lets you go into first-person. It doesn't alter things nearly as heavily as yours, but it was a neat bonus!

I suggest top-down be an advantage for player to know enemies place
Bro made a john wick game and thought we wouldnt notice
randomly appears on my recommended and Oh My God This Looks Amazing
hotline miami 3 is realllll (or something)
The only other time I've really seen this done for a top-down was the tpp/fpp mod for Hatred. It was done pretty well, fair amount of jank and a lot of similar challenges to the one you described but I was really impressed by it and I'm getting the same vibe here. Cool project, put it on my steam wishlist and look forward to seeing your progress.
And thus the ultimate John wick game was made. You beat me to it
This is gonna be our Max Payne before Max Payne Remakes!
whoa this looks great in Third-person
I like it, I prefer it to top down. top downs definitely have there own audience as well
Also to add further, I've been eyeing this game for like 2 years but was always hesitant to buy it since I'm not a huge fan of top down shooters but I'll 100% be buying this when the 3rd person mode is polished.
Have to be honest but I prefer this to the top down look. Looking forward to playing this.
From a market perspective, I think it would sell better as a TPS than an isometric (although having both options would be a real treat).
i've been wondering what showgunners would be like in 3rd person
Switching shoulders while aiming would be GREAT (like Rogue Company)
Also 7:00 you should make enemy indicators like in God of War (2018)
Some whote arrows that show where the offscreen enemies are, the arrows blink red when offscreen enemy is preparing an attack
Game looks sick btw! 🔥
Definitely yes, I love the Max Payne gameplay, and if a third-person mode here gives a similar feeling, I am definitely moreso tempted to get it.
I like it, it brings a Syphon Filter vibe back
Some top down games after a while (and if they get modding support) will have a first person mod, so having an official first person mode is very very good i think adding that option when you start the game could be very good to the game
Like you start the game and before it begins you have some options to activate and it could be a button that says "gameplay" you could toggle from original to first person
Hotline Miami x Max Payne x John Wick nice combo I’m interested hope your able to work out on the Third person
The weapons look like they have a bunch of punch which is cool. It's hard to get that down
Take my money, you've already taken it I'll come back with reviews
Bro made John Wick the game 🔥🔥🔥 also this is MUCH BETTER
The customer is NOT always right. Go with your intuition. People dont know what they want until you show them
Picked up your game. Asa Dev myself, not on your level though. I like to support your work.
Bro....this is WAYYYY BETTER
I think a simple easy/temp fix is just making the sceen glow on the side or bottom when about to be shot from an angle out of camera view.
yoooooo that 3rd person looks sick af. Keep both. If you make it hotswappable that would be killer
Cheers! There's a hotkey to toggle between 3rd person and top-down and a setting as well.
@ Let’s gooo. I’d def buy this when it drops
I might buy this for the third person, keep it up :)
Looks totally playable and fun.
Tbh i have fun playing it in 3rd person. Both top down and 3rd person works well
Yes I would buy this game just for the third person, you are right.
6:23 Reminds me when some made a mod for Hatred which had a 3rd person mode. It was neat.
I think it looks fucking amazing and i think it made total sense as a bussiness decision
incredible! I'm much more interested in your game now
the third person is actually kinda sick
Dude! Ummm I think that should be the default. It looks fkn awesome. Obviously quite a big deal to orient the whole game to third person. But I’m glad you will make it an option.
Looks so good!
This looks so good! Keep it up.
Think chivalry 2 or re8 for example
a lot of people argue on whats better when it comes to first and third person in that
a lot of people also only play in first or third person because of how much they prefer that
i’d say add this it adds a lot of customisation & settings to the mechanics which is always really cool to have, it adds a lot of replayability and has also actually sold me on finally getting the game even when i’ve been considering doing so for a while
I'd enjoy more top down shooters, if they did this!
I mean.... personally I think this would sell a lot better if even only just a option.
I don't really care for top downs but it looks really interesting to me in 3rd person.
there was old game about the demolition man movie where you play in two perspective side scrollin and half through the game it changes to top down perspective
you can do similar thing
John wick inspiration?
Looks really cool in 3rd person mode
Maybe add laser pointers to all enemy guns in third person and the circle filling up/shrinking to where the laser hits the player character if the enemy is behind you/ out of view. This way you might not need to tweak the ai.
Love the 3rd person but I understand why people said not to add it. Feels like your making a whole new game.
my goddd the difference is crazyyyy
Just bought your game, i hope you keep working on this 3rd person mode because it looks very promissing. I think there are alot of people that will buy the game with the full 3rd person mode
Cheers! I think it's pretty evident that a lot of people are liking the 3rd person mode so it'll be fleshed out further and released alongside the regular top-down camera for the 1.0 update.
Definitely interested in the third person wishlisted
keep both perspectives, i like the idea of a game letting you do a run of a short level and then you can save the replay to view in both perspectives 0:38
Thankyou! I would literally pay money for this in all top down games 😂
I think both are dope. I prefer top down for a more tactical game. Is there a version that is one shot kill for yourself? And swapping shoulders and stuff and is super hard?
Are we going to be able to keep the top down angle too? I definitely like the top down significantly better
Both options will always be available, even a hotkey is there if you want to flip between the two.
i think they're just scared that you are going to abandon the top down mode, just make it clear you'll have both
Keep it Third Person can’t wait to play it again,
Imagine if this is in multiplayer and it will be a survival type of game
Thank you very much!
I remember reading something about the AI targeting the players camera which is the head but im no dev so im not sure
7:00 Darktide has soundcues before you're about to get shot/hit just throwing some ideas 😉
