Take your struts apart the easy way

  • If you are change your vehicles front struts or shocks, you can take them apart and only replace what has failed. Most of the time this is the macpherson strut, or the bearing that connects the spring to the mount. When the bearing fails it causes binding in the steering wheel, or hard steering as the the driver is now turning the whole spring when steering the car. You must be careful because the strut spring is under a lot of pressure and can come flying off and injure you if you are not careful. I always use a spring compressor to compress the spring so I can take the top retaining nut off. The strut assembly does not have that many parts, there is the strut, spring, bearing, top bumper plate, bumper stopper, dust protector, and rubber seat (sometimes) so once you get it apart, putting it back together is just done in reverse.

    Hello sir. I had a question. This is a awesome video. Love the editing work. I have decided to stay with all live. I had a crazy question about a Nissan if you ever have a free moment. It’s driving me insane. I have never seen anything like it and I have proved it all over the pace and checked everything, shoot me a message or email whenever your free it’s no rush but it’s driving me insane. It’s always nicer to have a extra mechanic to give a opinion other then my self. It’s a 2005 Nissan Sentra 1.8. I tend to get my strut pre assembled now however that can be a risk? You never know if the strut has good hydraulics. I have had them blown before and it’s a pain. This can be dangerous if done wrong but great video!!

      Hey there, and thanks for the question !!! You can save some money if you buy just the strut by itself and change everything over. Most of the time its just the strut that goes. In this video the upper strut bearing was also shot, and that caused binding in the steering. If you ever take your strut apart please use a strut spring compressor, as you saw how it can fly apart !!!! Getting them preassembled is ok, but it does cost more :( Hope you are having a good day :)

    The whole unit, with spring, is a strut assembly. At the to is a mount or cap, which can have a bearing or a separate bearing. There's often rubber on the bottom mounting area (where spring sits) and the top mounting area. Make sure it's not really worn down or more vibrations will be transmitted to the car/cabin from the suspension.

      Hey appreciate the comment. I find that today things have changed quite a bit. More and more you can buy complete assemblies aftermarket that are most cost effective than buying components. If you want OEM from the manufacturer, then you still have to buy components most of the time. I'm one of those guys that still likes that. Thanks for your insight.

      Thank you for the great comment !! Without the proper tools its actually pretty dangerous. You would not want that spring to come out flying !!! Thanks again and enjoy your weekend :)

      Very true! Plus you could really get hurt with that flying spring if you are not careful !! Thank you for the comment :)

    Nice tip on using the punch in the socket hole to keep it from spinning when removing the large nut off the shaft. I did this once, replacing the bearing plate, and found that it's not worth it. In this scenario you replace a worn out part of an assembly that consists of multiple parts, so if one part has reached its viable service life what can be said of the remaining life of the reused parts? In my case two months after replacing the bearing plates one of the springs broke in half. IMO replace the whole assembly.

      Hey There I hear you, this video was just about how to take them apart. I actually replaced the whole unit in this video ruclips.net/video/VsN309rpbjg/видео.html and just did the video you watched to show people how they come apart if the want to change a part of the assembly. Thanks

    Thoughts on the new Ford Mavericks?

    • @GarageKing
      @GarageKing  2 года назад +1

      I think they are really nice. They get good fuel economy in the hybrid format if used in the city. I like the look of them, but like any vehicle, they are new so it would be good to see in a year how well they rate in reliability. If you need a small truck in the city, I think it could be the ticket :)
