  • England make it six games without a win as they lose 2-1 to Germany in the US Cup in June 1993, finishing bottom in the mini tournament. In their first match indoors at the Pontiac Silverdome, England fall behind to a goal from Stefan Effenberg before an excellent team goal is finished off by David Platt to bring them level. Jürgen Klinsmann scores Germany's winner in the second half. Despite taking just one point from the games, England's performances against Brazil and Germany in the tournament represent a vast improvement on recent matches against USA and Norway.

I don't understand why there's so much hostility against England and English football in the comments. I'm German and I think England has always been a great football nation with an outstanding club tradition, so many huge, classic and exciting WC and EC games against Germany and others.

I loved this German team, they had kept hold of their mullets, played in a classic German way, strength throughout the team, great names, a real penchant for diving. Just wonderful wonderful villains.

I love all the anti-English comments on here, Germany were the better team, we have no problems.

Nigel Clough? For the England team? Really? Don't get me wrong, he was a very good player at the club level, but he wasn't international class. I think in fairness to poor old Graham Taylor, a major factor in his failure as England manager was the bad luck of being given the role at a time when English football was going through a lull in which there simply wasn't have enough of the necessary talent to perform at an elite level. When you're selecting Carlton Palmer and Nigel Clough, you really need to ask questions. What partly caused this problem was the ban on English club in Europe due to the role of Liverpool fans in the Heysel disaster, which led to a period of stagnation in the English game. An England team had reached the semi-final of the 1990 World Cup under Bobby Robson, but in truth that team had several talented players at their peak. Taylor's timing was unlucky. By 1996, the English game had recovered and England were able to knock six bells out of Holland in that years' European Championship - a very satisfying revenge for the humiliation of 1988.
