that's also for legal purposes, she's protecting herself (which is totally fair and a good idea), for example she says "I don't want to represent her with these words" or she says she's quoting a person without necessarily agreeing with the words she's reporting.

My friend and I were SA’d in Italy on a study abroad trip. The police and hospital did nothing to help us and blamed it on us because we were drinking that night. Our school paid us to be quiet about it and left it at that. My teachers, who were our guardians on the trip, were more concerned that we interrupted their dinner with their wives on the night it happened because we needed someone to help translate with police. I am so glad someone is spreading awareness of the dangers of studying abroad, especially when young, Rest in Peace Lauren. ❤

Almost every case of rape/sexual assault is done by immigrants, and we can do nothing about it (there was this recently case about a little 15 year girl who was g*ng r*pe by 4 immigrants, and due to our woke and socialist governmemt they only had to attend sexual classes. The daughter of my grandparents' neighbors, Martina Rossi (20), died in the same circumstances in Palma de Mallorca: she fell from the balcony while in vacation there. Spanish authorities closed the case as a s*icide, but two Italian prosecutors investigated, theorizing that she fell from the balcony while trying to escape a r*pe attempt. Two men, Alessandro Albertoni e Luca Vanneschi, have been charged with manslaughter, failure to provide assistance, and attempted SA, and are both semi-free at the moment. The fact that in both cases the cause of the fall was dismissed as an incident or worse and justice wasn't properly served is heartbreaking and infuriating.

Hi! American here who lived in Spain the last 4 years, 2019-2023. Some thoughts: 1. a short note on Spain & SA & 2. a SUPER ALARMING DETAIL FROM THE VIDEO that would prove Manuel Blanco Vela committed SA.
    1. Spain has been quite behind on sexual assault, which is so unfortunate, because Spain is a beautiful, liveable country with a lot of (oftentimes young) ex-pats moving in and out; Due to this, I can only imagine the high amount of false identities and victims that are out there at the hands of Manuel Blanco Vela & Spain's inadequate systems in SA. Anyways, there was a law made in effect (only JUST recently) last October of 2022, called ley del “solo sí es sí” - "only yes is yes." 2. What is said at the end, 51:10, that "[Lauren's] alcohol blood level was described as nearly comotose" raised HUGE ALARMING BELLS. If her blood alcohol level was so high, that young woman should have been going to the emergency room, called urgencias en Espana. IN NO WAY should she have been alone, in a much older man's room, NAKED, in a comotose state!!!! IN NO WAY, could she have given her consent under such conditions. Can this detail can be amplified, please? I am appalled, because Spain is a country that parades its healthcare system, so any likeminded person would insist that the mere fact that a test showed her alcohol level was so high, that is proof alone that she could NOT SAY YES to be NAKED that night, and not at the urgencias. Ugh. UGH!! This guy deserves to go to jail, like yesterday. Vete a la mierda Manuel Blanco Vela!
A last note- I have experienced the chaotic nature of dealing with Spain's systems (healthcare, police/bureaucratic, socially) in terms of SA, both personally and peripherally, and it is FUCKIN NOT EASY, especially in a second language. English level is still rather low nowadays (in Spain's capital I had to navigate all systems for SA completely Spanish, in 2022 😮‍💨) so I highly suspect in 2015-2017 (at the time of the video,) the victims would have 100% needed a Spanish translator to do almost anything. I LOVED how the speaker said it, "this guy thrived in a culture of silence" (1:00:00). My heart aches for the victims in this RUclips video and all those of the people affected by this predator who could not speak up for themselves while abroad, or those that had to leave without justice, without the feeling of the system wanting to hear them at all. And to those victims that did not get to leave Spain, like Lauren.

It appears to me kickinitwithjess is just speaking of her naivete at that age and the fact, in retrospect, she would've been vulnerable, too,@@fawn2911- not "victim-blamey".

Another spanish subscriber here, I don’t recall this at all like, media didn’t say anything about the case. I found an article from 2019 saying that Manuel had to pay 73k to the family’s victim but nothing else, it says the girls were drunk. Infact, Leslie was on the verge of an OD and that was the cause of the fall. He was sober.
The case was archived shortly after without further investigation.🤦🏻‍♀️
    Spanish police, a shame.

Hi! I'm from Seville, and I'm actually an English teacher, so I've been involved in an international environment for years. In my early 20s, I worked with many female English teachers who were doing internships and similar programs. I just can't imagine something like this happening to the wonderful women I've worked with. One thing I'd like to share is that, while experiencing the nightlife in my city as a local, I can say that we are not always safe. It's important to note that many international people arrive in Seville, and alcohol can become a tricky issue. We have a strong drinking and nightlife culture that can be very dangerous when you're in a vulnerable position, don't speak the language, and are very young. It breaks my heart that there are still individuals like that horrible Manu around, and this is not something that has been talked about locally. I wish we could do something to spread this story and raise awareness in our community.

this was such a powerful & inspirating story. i studied abroad this past summer and i did not experiece anything of this sort but it truly has changed my perspective of telling people to study abroad. i have grown up in a very conscious environment of traveling in which we talked about “being alert” or “being on your toes” but until this podcast i really hadn’t learned the effects that this can have on someone similar to my age ( or geographical location) tbh and i really respected/honored how this was told.

So respectfully shared. I would also like to share ..be careful on cruise ships. My friend and I friended an employee on a cruise ship in our early 20's. One night were were surprised to find him waiting outside our room. He coersed his way into our room .. thankfully we avoided his aggressive advancements and encouraged him to go out with us, just to get him out of the room! The next day he begged us not to report him because he was from a poor village and supported his family, and could lose his job. Knowing what i know now....we should have reported him.

I studied abroad during summer so this was a video that was hard for me to get through. My friend also studied abroad during summer as well so it’s crazy that I saw this video pop up in my feed. It’s scary knowing there’s evil men out there who are capable of such heinous crimes and can get away with it. My deepest condolences to Lauren and her family. I’m an only child too so I could imagine how terrible it would be to have parents lose their only child. Thank you for sharing this story. It must’ve been really difficult speaking out about this but we really need more awareness. Travelling is scary, and it’s terrifying knowing that lives can be lost even through a school program. To all my fellow adventurers out there, please stay safe and be aware of your surroundings and who you talk to especially in a foreign country.

I have an acquaintance who died in the hands of a serial killer and he was convicted. I don't feel I can openly talk about it because I knew her as a sweet and nice girl who I crossed paths in high school hallways and said hi to her here and there. I feel that because she was overweight and an immigrant added to that effect because I only saw 1 article about her on the TV with her mom crying and it was heart breaking. I feel that she was not honored enough. I dont want to step on anyones toes to her and her family. A movie was made but I couldnt bring myself to watch it.

Thank you Siobhan for sharing the story of Lauren with us. I feel like it’s important to point out that anyone can be victimized at any point. No one is bulletproof in that sense or has all the defenses to survive someone with ill intent. I got chills when Siobhan said the part about the men seeing vulnerability in the young women where they couldn’t see it themselves. My experience echoes this and my heart aches for victims and survivors everywhere. And yes: the sisterhood is incredibly necessary.
