    • @VeiledDancer
      @VeiledDancer 4 года назад +6

      Justin Hickox - I would have the length at the bottom of my shoulder blades, cut straight across with light layers at the bottom. I like to air dry my hair, and my slight waves look much better at that length.

      My hair is thinnest on top then I have stringy hair on the bottoms. I wish that they would start to integrate mannequins with thin or thinning hair patterns to give practice to stylists who may feel threatened by trying to make it look good. I notice that whenever a stylist did my hair it was never as good as when I did it. Bc they follow a typical protocol that is learned. It's not their fault. They truly don't teach them. The best tips I have, baby powder for Light hair, cocoa for dark (if you want) , dry shampoo, back combing. Blow dry by switching up upside down and hair being pulled straight up to the ceiling. Not to the side etc. Straight vertical hair as you dry. Hair rollers can create volume. Braids slept in can create volume with a natural wave. Etc.. If you have dark hair, you can also use tinted sprays to hide the scalp better (Baptiste dry shampoo ones are pretty good and cheaper than fibers like topic). With light hair the dark can also work towards the root to create a kind of gradient. If you don't like that effect, then skip that. I have yet to find a decent blonde spray. But also keeping the hair a lighter color works well too. Skinny hilights throughout.. Etc.
      As for cuts. Chin length to a lob is usually best. Long is possible but more upkeep.
      I hope this helped someone out there!
      And I'm not a stylist, I just have done tons of research and used myself as the test subject. :P
      I hope this helped some.

    In my experience I have had to explain to most hairdressers why fine/ thin hair has to be handled differently. Also, I have had a few hairdressers "shame" my fine hair as if it is defective, thus absolving them of responsibility for not knowing the best approach when cutting/ styling fine/thin hair.

    Layers make my thin hair even thinner. The look on a hairdressers face after they layer my hair is hilarious. I say dont layer but they always override me. Then they grab volumizer which makes my hair even flatter. Of course i go to barber shops now. They do what i ask and it saves me time and money.

    I've actually gone for the last, short, version on this video, a couple of months ago, after watching one of your other videos and loving the shorter style. I've decided to stop dying my hair and let the silver strands sparkle 😁 not only it looks amazing, I've not had so many compliments! Never thought short (or grey) hair would suit me, I was so wrong. So, thank you so much for all the hair info, advice and encouragements 🤗

    Okay - I am 60 with fine average amount of hair and a squarish-rectangular face. After watching the DIY haircutting blunt, layering, and bangs videos, I developed a hand cramp. It was from drawing diagrams of my head, hair, where to (and not to) cut, and taking mounds of notes while watching the videos. // After a few days of that, I cut my own hair (hand-cramp and all). // I love love love it! // I can still do the updo’s and don’t feel like I have to hide my hair in a pony tail when it is down. My husband likes that it is still longish, and likes the movement, and is happy that I love it! // Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

    Thank you so much for this! How you explained to only layer the hair above the temples and the back of the ear forward on the first model is exactly what I've been trying to get across to every hairdresser!! I'm going to play that part of your video at my next appt.! Do you have a video showing HOW to do that cut?

  • @SusanCallHutchison
    @SusanCallHutchison Год назад +3

    Ooh! My favorite tip was to keep everything below the temples unlayered, and to layer the top. I HATE cuts that make my long hair look "scraggly." YOU SOLVED my need for volume on top and around the face while keeping the length and fullness at the ends.

    I have found that a blunt cut bob just below chin length makes my hair look thicker. People are surprised that when I make a ponytail, the diameter is about the diameter of a pencil so I use children’s bands. The issue is that many stylists don’t seem to understand that a slight undercut will help the hair curve under a bit and it looks thicker. Another problem is that I look better with bangs, but want them in a slight arch a bit longer on the sides. I also want them textured so that they are a little softer. As a woman in her 60’s I don’t want straight, blunt bangs like children have. I have them cut them a bit longer as I can fix them at home. If they do it correctly, I will have them cut it the length I want and give extra tip. One stylist cut my hair for years which always kept it’s shape between cuts but he had MS and couldn’t work anymore. I have had my hair cut different lengths that were visible from the front, chunks not cut the same length and bangs cut badly. I wouldn’t even want someone to try and layer or do anything differently since my hair is so thin and fine, every scissor cut is noticed. Even if they aren’t busy, they seem to think, quick and easy, 15-20 minutes and don’t bother to verify the length. I will politely notice problems but they get annoyed and it looks worse. I have stayed quiet and had my husband even it up as he will take time and has a better eye. Women tell me they are happy with their hair but the coloring is poorly done and the hairstyle isn’t flattering. I gave up about 15 years ago. Maybe they think that older people don’t care about their hair but I sure miss my long time stylist as I always got compliments on my hair. I do now get compliments on the color, which is uncolored, but never the cut.

    Great analysis of the specific issues with fine hair! You are the FIRST hairdresser I have encountered who understands that cutting the crown too SHORT creates a flat space beneath!!! I always hear that I need to shorten the top layers to create volume but this NEVER works with my fine hair and results in the FLAT spot you described. Now, if only I could communicate this to my hairdresser. Sadly, I don’t think a move to Portland is in the cards.

    I've been considering cutting my long hair - fine but thick - into layers to change my look. I'm a very youthful 53 who still relies upon classic looks like the French twist. I would be interested in more elaboration into layering options for ladies like me who may be open to layering but with the caveat of wanting and needing it still long enough for elegant up-styles. I'm a new subscriber as of today so I will be anticipating your reply greatly!

I actually upload my first one today. One of my first three videos has a client with a long thick hair that’s fine and texture. And we go into layers sounding very much like what you were talking about. So in the next few weeks expect a video that should answer some of your questions. Can’t wait to hear your feedback.

    Like he said in the intro people, pay more attention to his technique and not necessarily what he’s working with. Try it on yourself and if it works, great! Are y’all even listening? If not then why even make a comment 🤦‍♀️

      Yes, many prolly didn’t hear the initial auditory but they did see the visual. They are already concerned about their own hair being fine and even perhaps thinning. Don’t think they needed your rude comment supported by the individual who is suppose to be “helping”. If the “helper” had used an appropriate “dummy” there’d have been no need to indicate the viewers should ignore the full mop of hair he’s using and learn anyway.

    Just seeing this video now; really need this as my hair is pretty much see-through at the ends! Question for Justin or anyone else: how would the recommended styles change if hair is wavy/curly? Mine is type 2A on top, 2B-C underneath.

    • @justinhickox
      @justinhickox  3 года назад +4

      Great question! The foundation of the styles would be basically the same. Meaning the tips I share are the same. The major difference is that since curly hair has a tendency to have a bit more volume (think fluff), SOMETIMES, it requires/can handle a tiny bit more layering to remove that volume if that makes sense. I really need to do a video about that. Hope that helps a bit.

I want a chin length Bob but My stylist says I can’t because I have a very long hairline in the back and can only go to my hairline or I have to shave up the back. My hair has always been thin and fine and now that I’m 58 , it’s even thinner, especially right in front on the top. During the pandemic I grew out a soft pixie. Didn’t leave my house for ages and just kept it in a ponytail to wait it out. My hair grows really fast, so it was past my shoulders until earlier this morning when I finally got it cut. I now have a blunt cut sitting right at the collar bone with a full curtain of straight bangs cut right above the eyebrows. It definitely makes me look younger! I dye my hair a bright copper and I’m enjoying that with the new length. I have to admit, there are things I really loved about having short hair, but after 8 years with different variations of a pixie, it was time for a change. :)
