Back in the day when I was a teenager, I went to get my hair cut, and the stylist said "wow, you have really fine hair" and I said, "thank you". I thought he was giving me a compliment on my hair, lol.
In my country, most people have thin hair. Decades ago, when my mom was in USA and went to have haircut in some famous hair dresser's and all the employees wanted to check my mom's hair like it was some miracle to see such thin hair. 🙄
This is one of those core memories I would think about every day of my life... Got at least 30 years later 😂 I was smoking pot many years ago. I was with a good friend and we were enveloped in the deepest thought provoking discussions. He said something profound and I was stoned so I just said "Life is short". With the most serious expression, he looks me in my eyes, then at his shorts, and with a straight face back at me to say, "Thank you. had em forever."
As a person with fine and thin hair, I can say all of this is true. Vitamin deficiency is a main reason for falling hair. Never overlook your nutrition.
Nutrition is important, for sure. But even the best nutrition won’t stop hair loss due to aging. Anyone losing hair should get help from a dermatologist to determine the cause. Some causes can be easily treated, others take more extreme measures. But if you don’t know what’s causing it, you could waste a lot of time and money on treatments that won’t help.
My Hair was falling out in handfuls after shampooing just once with K18 daily shampoo. It was scary so I asked Mr Google for help and found a mixture, can't remember the recipe but it was with onion juice. It stopped my hair falling out after a couple of weeks phew, but left my hair even thinner than normal. So I began taking Vitamin D3 and Vitamin K2 plus massaging my scalp morning and night for a minute or so. The difference one year on is unbelievable everyone now tells me how my, normally thin hair, is thick!!
I have taken Castor Oil Capsules for years and my hair shines and is really strong and my skin has always been very clear and smooth. At a recent hospital clinic the female consultant actually asked me how my skin and hair look so good and said both were better than many young women she sees . Castor oil capsules treat from inside . They also keep eyelashes growing thick and healthy and lips full and smooth , and nails very strong and healthy . They aren't expensive to buy . So go on , everyone and try those capsules .Within about 2 weeks you'll see a massive change .
Thank you for this! Years ago I wore my hair in a shag cut and absolutely loved it. It worked great for my fine wavy hair. Over the years, I tried other trendy hairstyles like the super stacked bob and it just never looked right. I'm going to see my hairstylist tomorrow and I'm going to ask her to give me the shag again.
I hope that turned out ok for you! Like you, I loved my shag cut. It suited me. Recently, I went to a hairdresser to repeat this cut. I was told “they didn’t know that cut because it was out of style”! Or this time…never forgotten 6 weeks before my wedding decades ago. Doing a trial run for my wedding day style. I asked for it to be swept back, lined up with ringlets in back. I was told, that was too “old fashioned” & didn’t think she could do that - same visit which added insult to injury even more..she had my hair fried doing a perm after telling this woman I have fine hair. You’d think she would have realized it as she wound up my hair! She didn’t listen. I was horrified! My hair was FRIZZY - it was awful. I cried. I never went back there. A young me still paid for that. I did find another salon that helped me out. They had to cut more off due to the frizz, but they did try to give me the style I was wanting, although much shorter version. They saved my wedding day. I have since learned to cut my own hair (although watching Utube videos to learn shag cut 😊) & I have all my curlers for perming if I have a mind to. I learned how & have done my own head a few times in past years. My hair is so fine & thinner now, I have held back on perming it. I have no colour in it either. It’s dark blonde. Looks a little more golden with the silver highlights. hahaha 🤪 Love that.
@@alisonfaulkner47 I agree ! I am only 28 but I get them often and even when it’s cold out I don’t like it when my husband turns the heater on because I now sleep hot and they come on without warning it seems whereas he is fine
The distinction between thin and fine is much appreciated. I have thin coarse (a'la Mediterranean) hair. I have trouble finding advice for thin coarse hair and would greatly appreciate if you could make a video if the advice is different. Your positivity and supportive "do what makes you feel confident" perspective is refreshing.
I've started using Rosemary Oil, twice a week for a number of hours. My baby hairs seem to be growing and my hair is very soft and shiny. Also taking Gold Collagen everyday, my second month.
Read about collagen siplli3s Fron NEUTRAL scientical sources. Kollagen will pass thru your whole system. Unfortunally.... body cant make use of it like that. I dont remember why,but what they said made totally sence, and the articles and study's i read , was very thrusthworthy. And neutral, thats important! But off course , it doesnt hurt either. Its a product i think will flopp after some time. Like many other supplement's. The list of raved supplement are super long !
Having a lot of fine hair can be a test in patience (especially when washing and styling) but I’m glad it’s not thin and hasn’t thinned out as I age. I’d love to see a dedicated styling video for fine yet thick hair. Product recommendations, tips and tricks etc. no one does them as the ones I have seen are always about thin hair. I need more product because my hair is thick but since it’s fine I get the “ she didn’t wash her hair” look fairly easily.
Awesome. I have fine hair and I live in a dry, high altitude environment. It's static city. My hair is heavy and thick though. I have a short inverted A-line because my long hair would break in the wind. I use a round brush and gel to form and try to make my hair have more texture. (In the case of thinning hair, I know PCOS is a huge reason. Whole foods, plant based eating is the way to go.) Love your hair videos and hikes! I asked my stylist to do an M or W at the nape of my neck after one of your videos!@@justinhickox
Thank you! My hair is fine but there is a ton of it. I’ve had many stylists not know what to do with it. It’s a relief to hear a stylist who knows the difference well.
Suggestion for a future video: How to speak “Salonese”, i.e. how to communicate and describe precisely what you want to your stylist or colorist. That would be soooo helpful!
@@chronic2023 No, because you’re not putting it on your face, you’re putting it on your head. It only works where you apply it. The women’s stuff doesn’t often work because it’s not strong enough and they put the pink tax on it. You really want to get the men’s. It’s the proper amount and you’ll actually see a difference.
I thought when my silky fine hair turned grey/silver/pewter/steel/white, I'd have more body. Didn't happen. I rarely use conditioner because I don't need it. I'm tired of it being halfway down my back. After the first of the year when things calm down, I'm going back to above-the-shoulder length. Having it this long helps nothing. It's usually piled on my head or in a ponytail anyway. New year, new look. 😊
A few things that have helped my fine hair grow in better and appear more dense: 1. Never brush/comb when it’s wet because fine hair is more breakable when it’s wet. My hair is straight so this is easy for me to accomplish and I only brush after it’s dry. Not sure if you can do this with curly hair. 2. Before showering, I hang my hair upside down to make the blood rush to my scalp and do a scalp massage with the help of my paddle brush that has air in it so it gives a little bit when I press it on my scalp. I do it before my shower so my hair doesn’t get oily from the massage. 3. I stopped using tight ponytails to stop the tension breakage occurring at my temples. This tension breakage made my hair look like it’s thinning around my temples. 4. Use high quality leave in conditioner after I get out of the shower when my hair has been towel-dried (but not too much or it will look oily). 5. Use a little hair oil on the very ends after applying the leave-in conditioner. I like the brand OUAI from ULTA because it doesn’t make my hair look oily).
I put my hair in a fairly tight ponytail for the gym (and other instances) because I hate having sweaty hair on my neck, but I try to have it hanging loose more often now because it looked like my hair was thinning around the temples. ☹️
What? I only wide tooth comb my hair in the shower even shampooing and conditioning and NEVER outside of it. It dries perfectly and needs no brushing, no blowdrying and I stopped needing to use product, no more frizz either.

I watched another video that said that for fine hair you should use a bit of conditioner on your roots, but it should be a VOLUMIZING conditioner because they’re lighter, and you can put a slightly heavier conditioner on the ends too if you feel you need to
Thank you Justin👍 I have fine hair. Explaining the differences between find and thin hair is very helpful! Some meds also cause hair thinning as a side effect.
Thanks, Justin. All good tips! I would add a couple more: 6) don’t use a round brush. That technique stretches all the texture out of fine hair. Turn head upside down & finger fluff as you blow dry; 7) section off & spray dry shampoo just at the roots immediately after you blow dry your shampooed hair; and 8) do a final rinse with cold water, as cold as you can stand it. You will be amazed at how much cleaner and fluffier your hair stays for a lot longer!
@@lizyx211 That’s strange. You must be allergic to something in it. I will say that when I use a texturizer or volumizer (and I’ve tried many) I have a really hard time getting it all out of my hair - a big reason why I tried dry shampoo as replacement, then discovered the dry shampoo gave a little bit of texture but, even better, keeps my hair cleaner between shampooing.
I'm glad that you are teaching about this Justin. There is much misconception about fine and thin hair. I think about it in terms of a forest that has skinny trees( fine hair). A forest with a lot of skinny trees looks full (thick hair). A forest with not many skinny trees looks thin (thin hair). I learned that my hair is baby fine, but thankfully I have a lot of it. I feel for the people that have fine and thin hair. So much harder to work with than just fine hair. A very common cause of thinning hair is thyroid issues.
Any thoughts about hard water. If you’ve ever seen the build up it can cause in the dishwasher or on the shower head, ice maker etc. it’s so hard to get off. I feel like some of my fine thin hair problems are from hard water clogging my follicles. Am I correct?
*56, Low Density, Fine Hair, Changes in Texture* . My hair has always been fine. During Menopause, the shed was REAL. Couple that with a few episodes of the C-19, and several years of bathing in very hard water and I was shook. I altered my diet, stopped coloring and washing my hair daily. I upgraded my hair products, always do a double cleanse (2x/week) and got a shower filter. I'm 2B wavy, with shoulder length light brown hair. I'm a mousse gal for volume and preserving my waves. I used "volumizing" shampoo and condition for years not realizing how stripping it was. The gray is texturally different and loves moisture. I never condition the roots and my hair seems to love squalene. I often use a hair mask for conditioner on mids-ends. My scalp still gets oily after 3 days. I "pineapple" in a silk scrunchie at night and don't brush. Claw clips are my choice over hair bands and I do minimal heat styling, diffusing only at the root. I treat my hair like a precious commodity and it looks so much healthier than it did 5 years ago. Thank you for the great tips Justin.
@@candleabra1837 First cleanse, Pacifica Rosemary Purify Clarifying shampoo. Second cleanse, JVN Undamage (love the fragrance and I only use 1 pump). I use the JVN Nurture Mask for conditioner. Once or twice a month I will use a Shea Moisture Mask, High porosity or the coconut/hibiscus curl and shine.
My fine hair actually looks better and holds a curl better when I blow dry it and use a curling iron or straightener on it. But I know that blow drying your fine hair, and using hot tools, isn’t always recommended for its health. What do you think? How to safely style fine hair would be my recommendation for a video in the new year. It’s a struggle, especially since I’m trying to grow it out a bit. Plus, I’m older (63) so I want to keep it healthy. Thank you! Enjoy your holidays!
Thats a great topic...thanks for your recommendation. I would say a good place to start when using hot tools on fine hair is to be sure to always use a heat protectant.
I've been using Conair Easy Start hot rollers for 40 years and the heat has never harmed my hair/ never had hair loss. The set lasts longer when after I blow dry it, I roll my hair, and then apply finesse hairspray. I take the rollers out once they cool down( or wait even longer) and then brush my hair.
63. Fine hair too. Trouble is mine basically dies at the shoulder. Turns to fuzz. I hate me in short hair, it’s uncomfortable. I’m thinking a lot more of bald women examples!😅. I feel your struggle. Along with the push to go short unless you have thick or extra long hair by your sixties it seems.
Same here. Now my hair is longer then my old profile picture. It’s natural grey, and it’s so strong and full. I would never had colored it if I would have known. It looks good on me!
I just subscribed here. On you're other video I commented on a product for thinning hair. Conditioner on the scalp was an eye opener. From now on only on the mid shift and ends. Thank you!❤
Yep, I knew the difference, but thanks! I have thinning, fine strand hair. It’s a challenge! You just have to appreciate what you have! Merry Christmas!! 🎄🎁
16 seconds ago My hair is fine and (oh lovely day!) it has started thinning too (thanks hormones!) Add a few sparkling greys and BOOM! It's a struggle I don't have time for. Yet I DID get my hair colored (with encouragement from your videos) with a few extra highlights, subtle low lights, a slight root lift, great long layer cut (first in over a year) and NOW.....I'm thrilled. 🤩Thanks for the many tips, Justin. You're helping us direct our stylists in the way of our ending goal ... since you two are on the other side of the map! 😆
THAT"S AWESOME! Thank you so much for trusting me! I'm stoked to hear it all turned out so well for you! That makes my day. I'm going to be doing a lot of content around thin/fine hair in 2024, let me know what your questions are and I'll try to make some videos to help you out!
@@justinhickox Question: I have natural curly hair. I love to rock curls, but some days I feel it is aging me and I need smoothing - just because I can't stand the inconsistency of my hair having it's own brain! I try to take all the steps of heat protectant for drying, another for hot tools, etc. But IS IT TRUE, that I should stay with my natural curls for the health of my hair?
I already knew my hair is fine, not thin…but the information you gave about the different dimensions in color is GOLD. Thank you ❤, btw, I already have high lights but this makes me to continue learning 🌸.
That's awesome! I'm so glad I could help! Another thought is to actually add lowlights that are only about a shade darker than your natural hair color. This will make the highlites pop even more and add even more dimension at the same time. They would be applied at the same time as the highlites. You're just adding another color to the process.
Great tips. I have always put conditioner on my roots and I have very fine hair and it doesn’t feel like I have much of it. A ponytail for me is less than the circumference of a dime. Basically the same amount of ponytail as a toddler. Lol
LOL!! I would consider than on the thinner side. Yes, start only using the conditioner form mid shaft through you're ends. I can't wait to hear how that works for you!
Great tips. I do them all and it really helps. But here is a situation I never expected to face ---- I was hospitalized for emergency surgery for 4 days and had no friends or family or even makeup with me. I didn't even have a brush. The hospital gave me a comb but I had no access to shampoo or a way to wash my hair. After 2 days it was so dirty and greasy I was disgusted. My blonde hair looked brown and was flat against my head. Gross. As soon as I got home the first thing I did was wash my hair. I decided that I would buy one of those turban style head covers and fold it up and tuck it into my purse. From now on I will be prepared!
I now use Sitting Pretty's fine halo hair which is amazing quality and not expensive in the sales. It adds volume and much easier to manage. Highlights around my face frame, it's not enough to ruin my fine hair. Also get a head massager for at home use, it helps a little. After styling it goes flat, it's annoying so I don't do it much and also don't want to ruin what I have got..
THANK YOU! I have thin hair but 3 kinds of strands . thin, thick and kinky. Mostly kinky growing up and no one knew how to cut or style it including me! tried every product.I was endlessly teased..Wasn't til pregnant with 2nd son that the kink became more curly.
Haircuts really depends on the shape of your head a lot! But speaking for myself, I have had a bob with a pony (most of the time straight) for most of my life. I tried growing ot out once but it lost all its volume. The bob is short enough that I still get a nice amount of volume. I don't need to brush as much and no ponytails and stuff witch means less breakage. Real short hearstyles run the risk of exposing scalp becouse of the low coverage your hair provides. Real short hairstyles also often need more every day styling, meaning more messing with your hair and thus more damage. For me I just have to brush my hair in the morning (and sometimes I can skip even that) and it looks good without any styling. If I want to spice it up I use a clip (little flowers or other things, often things ment for kids becouse the adult ones look rediculously big on my small head with fine thin hair) And I pin a lock to begin my ear on one side. A clip won't catch and break any hair like pins often do for me. I hope you have long since found a style that works for you thow!
This makes so much sense. My MIL has fine and thin hair and she recently got it cut with all over white blonde and it looks so sparse, this explains why. Before she had some natural grow out and it looked awesome, dimension does a lot
I'll be honest I am kind of missing a "few" tips in your video ! I have fine, and now also thinning hair, here are the tips that made a difference for me : - have a good brush : go for a flat boarbristle one. Synthetic fibers, plastic and bamboo ones damage fine hair. When I use one I litteraly hear my hair breaking. Also, boar bristles provide a bit of scalp massage that stimulates the folicles, and then help distribute the oil to the lengths. - do NOT use conditioner : honestly "even just the ends" weighs down the hair in a significant manner. - use oil... before : fine hair never gets dirty enough (oil is not dirt!), so most shampoos strip down the hair and scalp, and chaos ensues. If you treat you hair with oil before washing, when you wash your roots, it remains gentle since it grabs the oil first, and since you do not shampoo your ends, they retain enough oil to be nourished. Jojoba oil is all around good, and castor oil (not pure!) is great if you have thinning hair - use heat protectant : protects your hair from frying, game changer for fine hair! From a fine hair beggar who did not have internet growing up, and went through many trials and errors
Fine hair that I only wash once a week. I am not using conditioner but I do use a masque I rinse out. I often times let my hair air dry to minimize the amount of time required to blow dry on medium heat (if at all). I brush my hair once in the morning and maybe at bedtime. I do curls, sometimes flat iron, and sometimes nada. I love on my hair by not stressing it and it loves me back.
I love your videos. I'm pretty clueless with hair cutting and styling and feel that your videos help me know what to tell my hairdresser about what I want and to know how best to style my hair.
So now I know, at 71, I have thick fine hair. Inherited from my Mum and Dad; he had thick head of hair till he passed away in his 90s. Now my #1 son has a thick, thick head of hair that is as thick as one those brown rush door mats. #2 son has thick fine hair like mine but with a white streak on the side of his head about the size of a loonie 🇨🇦 (silver dollar for you in the US), sorry, I digressed (as I sit on my cluch in my warm livingroom 😊)
Over this past year, I've noticed that my hair has gotten so thin, you can see my scalp very easily! I have curly hair, too. I am going to go to my dermatologist soon for help. I have several autoimmune diseases and on a chemo type drug for my lupus, along with other meds too. Two of my doctors recently told me i needed to go to a dermatologist and start using Rogaine. Would love to hear what you think about those products.
Any suggestions on easy ways to highlight my hair at home? I inherited very fine hair, which is darkish brown, chin length, and curly. I'd prefer to add additional brown colors. The scheme that's so popular now - with blonde or light brown hair and darker color applied at the roots - doesn't work for me. Thanks millions for all your help!
Justin, your videos never cease to amaze me. I wish we could clone you into every hairdresser out there! I'm not even kidding when I say: ever since the first of your videos I saw, visiting your salon has been on my list of "if I ever win the lottery" bucket list items.😁. Thank you for help educating us!
Grey hairs are so much thicker and coarser. I have fine hair, it thins since my last pregnancy. I use Viviscal and although it’s pricy, it works well if taken daily. I have high and low lights every 6 months and I’ve selected the colors carefully. When hair is wet it becomes way more prone to damage. Towel drying can actually frizz out my hair.
Thank you for this! I wish more people knew the difference. My hair started thinning several years ago because of some medication I was taking so I stopped taking it. Before my hair could recover, I got Covid and spent 3 weeks in the hospital with Covid pneumonia. About 2 to 3 months after I got out, I started shedding at an alarming rate that I found out was a side effect from Covid. That was 2 years ago and it is recovering slowly ... with care and laser light therapy. But when I look online for good haircuts and styles for thin hair, more often than not I find styles for fine hair ... they will have a full head of hair. Not what I'm looking to find. So discouraging.
Hi Peachy, I noticed you got no reply so thought I would offer up a hair style video which I am following. Check out a video by Janelle O'Shaughnessy on RUclips titled Why I Am No Longer Getting Layers Cut. She explains it all really well & in fact she does have some layering but only involving the hair growing from the top of her head. I think her advice would work for straight or curly hair. Mine is curly & her tips in that video plus her follow up video (where she trims it herself) are working well for me and are easy to explain to a stylist too. Just put her name and the title of the video into the RUclips search box.
@@jih-pu4xe Thank you for your reply. She may have fine hair, but she does not have thin hair ... she has a lush, full head of hair ... I would give anything to have hair as thick as hers.
I know, I am with you on that. My hair is nowhere near as dense as hers but.....But... This is doing so much for my look of density. I was sceptical, so sceptical!! Try it. You can always cut it if you want.
Hey peachy, every hair and head is different but I thought I'd chare my hair style. I have had both fine and thin hair all my life. (My barber tried to convince my 9 year old self to wear hats and stuff in summer becouse it whas so suseptable to break and I couldn't afford to loze any) I have had a straight bob with a straight pony for most my life. I have wavy hair and with a bob I get a little bit of natural volume. If I try to grow it out I loze all volume before it hits my shoulders. Real short hair easily looks patchy with scalp showing becouse my hair doesn't cover mutch. The bob is long enough that the layers on top of each other cover my scalp, short enough to give a bit of volume and it's a extremely low maintenance style that also means no ponytails and stuff so it helps avoid actions that would increase breakage. A bob also just looks really good with my head shape. I would recommend to also look at that when finding your style becouse that is extremely important in how something will look on you vs a model/coworker, etc.
@@femkevanwageningen6068 Thank you. I have actually worn a bob off and on for many years. When it really started thinning after Covid, I got it cut in a pixie while I tried some things to help with growth. I have now decided to grow it a little back into a bob but have learned that the top looks better with a few long layers so I will keep them because they provide depth and volume on the top where it is thinnest. Honestly, sometimes I wish that women would develop bald as a style ... it would be so much easier for us ... LOL I will share that the Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray is a game changer as far as giving volume.
Great content, informative. Thank you! Used to have medium volume fine hair prior to peri-menopause. Also had PCOS. It was explained to me that estrogen converts😊 excessive (pcos) testosterone to DHT which is bad for scalp hair. After menopause, I have thinner fine hair but am using DS Labs Revita shampoo & a rosemary oil product to see if I can increase volume again.
Been losing my hair for about two years now, found out that it is most likely due to my thyroid and I am now on medication. Hoping that it will come back in due time. If you are losing hair like I am please have your thyroid checked. Couldn’t hurt.
I watched something video on RUclips about the thyroid, those test are not accurate, you should rethink those meds, matter a fact, stay away from all of them so called doctors.
⭐❗❗❗ NEVER use any shampoo which contains SLS (sodium laurel sulfate) which makes your follicle DIE❗ Then also NEVER use any shampoo which is not see through - white not transparent ones contain SILICONE which is also damaging hair follicle❗ Then check your ZINC, POTASIUM, MAGNESIUM, IRON & vit D3 levels - you might need suplement them (especially if you're under stress which washes out magnesium from your body)
As someone with very fine hair, I stopped coloring my hair over a decade ago. It damages my fine hair so that it also gets thin! My hair is still fine but much fuller and healthier than when I colored it. Maybe mine's just delicate, but I think coloring my fine hair would actually work against wanting a fuller look since it falls out much more after a color treatment.
I did the same. But started dying my hair with henna (and other herbs mixed in). My hair looks pretty good, especially with my white hairs looking like highlights through the henna.
So I had beautiful natural greige hair as it started to gray. As I started going more white, it started to bother me got it colored blonde and it’s never been the same health wise. Any ideas on natural blonde coloring? I tried chamomile tea and not much difference
How about oil drops or leave in in conditioners ??? How about brushing hair to distribute the oil in the scalp and keep it cleaner and shiny and less itchy ? Should this be reserved to any other hair type that is not necessarily thinning? Don’t we ALL thin hair as we age ? Doesn’t hair becomes finer because of loosing pigment cells in the follicles and so our hair does not contain as much melanin? A lot of stylists like to apply oil drops or mist to make it look shinny and control frizz!! Thank you !! ❤❤❤
Hi there! I’ve stumbled upon you and think you are so talented and informative! I have had fine thick hair all my life until I went through ovarian cancer and chemo about 10 years ago. Now it’s fine and thin and no matter who I go to for treatments or cuts, I can’t seem to find what makes me feel a little like my old self. They are all missing the mark. Do you still cut hair? Do you do consultations?
Hey Leslie! Thank you so much! I'm sorry to hear about the struggle since Chemo. I stepped away from cutting behind the chair a while ago to focus the necessary time on this channel and our online businesses. I do consultations via Zoom at times and I'm considering opening up some more spots soon. Shoot me an email and I'll add you to our list to get notified when I open them up. I usually open a limited amount and they book out in minutes so keep an eye out for the email. Also, depending on your age, I'd look into all the possible causes of hair thinning. Chemo definitely causes havoc but other things like hormonal changes, diet etc can also influence it. It MAY be something that you can, on some level, reverse to an extent.
Have you ever addressed how to work with cowlicks? I used to have a lot of hair, but because of Hashimoto and menopause I have lost a lot. This made me realize that have about four cowlicks around the crown on the back of my head, and one wicked strong one in front. Next I color my hair, so it is extremely hard on day two of my hair to work with these cowlicks that make my hair lay flat and spread open to the roots. If that makes sense. I don’t want to wash my hair everyday. Cowlicks from hell…. HELP!!!!
Thanks, Justin! You are the master of hair education and I love your channel. I definitely have thin hair and I touch it constantly. I will try very hard to keep my hands off as well as to use your tip for applying conditioner in the shower. I need all these tips to cope with my hair. 😊
Thank you so much! You're WAY too kind! Means a lot to me. I can't wait to hear how these tips help! I plan on making a lot more content around thin/fine hair in 2024. What are your biggest questions about it?
@@justinhickox Thanks for asking, Justin! 😉 My hair sheds in some sort of cycle and I'm not sure what causes it because it's been happening since I was 18 and forty years later, it's still happening. So when it's shedding, my texture is wiry, frizzy and dry. I am blessed with natural curls so I'll diffuse it to help with volume. My question would be what can I do for styling when it's in the shedding phase? It looks awful and I've recently started using Toppix (game changer) to cover the scalp at the top of my head. I would love to wear it straight but I worry that all the round brushing and flat ironing would be damaging and cause even more hair to fall out. Thanks for your consideration. ❤️
Many thanks for this. 💕For sure there are challenges with fine hair and more so as you get older when it tends to thin …me …but aside from the right hair products I’ve always had the best and at times amazing results with hairdressers that know how to do a ‘precision cut’ for your hair … especially for short fine hair. They are usually but not always in higher end salons. For example in Vancouver Canada I used to go to Suki’s salon many years ago … and got the best of both cuts and colour recommendations. Made all the difference. Don’t under estimate a ‘good cut’ suited to not only your hair type but also your facial features!😍 A good talented/trained hairdresser will know what works best for you/your hair.
As always, thank you for the informative video. I have long, fine and thin-ish hair that has been colored. I did go darker and it does look thicker but I still struggle with volume. Any product recommendations for volume for long hair would be appreciated. ❤. Thanks!!!
My hair has always been very curly, but very fine. Tangles galore; my mum didn't have patience, so she always took me to the barber with my brother for a very short cut. Not even long enough for curls. Now, I keep it shoulder-length. My curls stay happy without too much fine length that just frizzes. Took me six decades to learn how to make my hair thrive.
I don't know what kind of hair I have. I just know that it's gotten thinner over the years. I used to have really thick hair, but i think it's thin now. This video was informative.. I'll try that conditioner technique. I hate products in my hair, so I don't use them. I rarely use a curling iron and i know it's good to use heat protection, but i have yet to find a product I like. No matter if I i use a little or a lot, boom, my hairstyle is ruined.
My hair is fine and I have alot of it. I find adding conditioner to the roots, gives the hair more moisture and therefore the volumizing products will absorb into the roots better instead of dry roots. I hope this make sense. Plus you can grab it better at the roots with a blow dryer brush if it is more moisturized.
CN you please please do a color video on fine hair? I love my level 4 hair coloured because it actually holds a freaking style lol! I’ve always been told that solid color creates visual width, and highlights creates vertical breaks resulting in less width. Could you do a video more on how that works?
Thanks for this. I am older and have naturally, curly hair, which I like to straighten with a round brush. I'm also trying to grow out my hair and it is now shoulder length. My frustration is that my ends have grown thin, through aging and menopause. I use Rogaine for thinning spots on my scalp (this stuff works) but have no solutions for thinning ends. Any suggestions?
Thank you so much for all your helpful tips Justin! I love your videos! I wish you lived near me! You are absolutely correct when you say there is a difference between thin and fine hair. My stylist always says I have fine hair but a lot of it. My problem is it is so hard to keep the volume in it! Is there a product you sell that you can recommend?
WOW, thank you! This is the biggest compliment I could get. If this is your first time doing color, or you haven't done it in a long time, make sure to find someone who specializes in color (you can ask the salon for a "color specialist", which may help) or at least one that has extensive practice in the specific color you want ie. highlites of XXXXX color, or lowlights of XXXXXX color etc. Especially if you're doing black lowlights on grey hair.
I love your videos, Justin! I am a 69 year old woman and had thick, medium texture hair until a few years ago when it started shedding like crazy and the texture became very fine. Went to the dermatologist who told me it is hormonal due to no more estrogen and too much testosterone. Ugh! I always added highlights to my brown, greying hair. Got it cut in a pixie, started using Rogaine and taking Viviscal. The Rogaine is helping but it is still very fine. My hair is dry. I wash it about every three days. I don’t touch my hair once it is styled. And I eat healthy. What I need help with is the huge cowlick down the back of my head where the hair is thin. Would you please do a tutorial on the best cut and styling tips for this problem? Thanks so much!
I had a similar journey, though I'm about a decade younger than you. I decided to go on HRT (for my bones, but has benefited my hair) and also use various DHT blockers on my scalp a couple times a week. I also use a red/laser light helmet every other night. Over the course of a year of doing the above I've mostly gotten my hair density back to near where it always was pre-menopause. It's good enough anyway. That section at the very top back even has grown in. Also my strands are each now thicker because I started using henna. If you don't want the color, cassia is a color-free product that has similar hair thickening effects to henna. Good luck whatever you decide is right for you.
I am 71 and have the same problem but mine just started in 2020 when I stopped spending as much time outside due to Covid. I spend more time outdoors now, eat very well and have been taking vitamin D since moving to Hawaii last year and it’s gotten thicker on top but still thin lower down. I figure another 6 months then I can get all the scragglier ends cut off!
Makes sense. I have thick and fine hair = silk. Try to iron a crease in silk. Try to form-fit silk. Try to control silk. It is an exercise in futility.
Awesome video, Justin….SO much information!!!…I finally learned from you years ago, my hair is fine, but, NOT thin!!!.,that helped so much knowing that!!..much love and appreciation for you, always!…Merry Christmas to you and Dionna!!!!…🎄🎄🎄🎄💜💜💜💜🎄💜
I have fine hair. When younger had piles of it now I'm 54, less piles..what helped me keep my fine head looking tip top when not.. A good cut..for me a nice layered bob Yes a color to add dimensions..helps Don't wash it every single day Use lighter conditioner UNLESS you just have drier hair. If you blow dry or hot brush it dry, wait til hair 50% naturally dry then do it
I have both thin and fine, 😢 it's hard to manage. Even a slight beveling on my bob haircut doesn't seem to work, you want to do my hair one time to see what you can do? Oh how I wish. I love your videos specially about bob hairstyles. You're the bomb! Thanks for all your advice ❤
Thank you SO much for that! I truly appreciate it! I'm glad to help! What area are you located in? I DO have some ideas around cutting subscribers hair... :)
Before I had my children I had thick full hair and after my last child I started noticing my hair growing back fine. Its still very full just fine. I thought I was balding. My hair is also curly. I have really been struggling for many years trying to figure out what to do with my. It's like the whole texture. I pretty much haven't done anything with my hair for a decade. Mostly just goes up in a messy bun because I don't know what to do with it.
I dont have fine hair. But a advise is to TREAT YOUR HAIR AS SILK! No hot water, no combing when wet! At least a week before washing! And you are Golden!❤️🇳🇴
When you don’t have fine hair (I do) - you don’t understand that we can’t go a week without washing it if we are out in the world. Staying home, ok. It gets too oily, too fast & sticks to our heads like it’s wet. Very unattractive look. Most woman won’t do that. Your advice may work for other hair types but not for fine & thinning hair. 😊
What brand of volume booster or product to apply to roots for lift would you suggest. And like most of us, something that can be purchased at say, Target or similar stores. TY! Love your video! I’m a fine hair plus thin, so any suggestions would be appreciated!
Thanks for these tips, they help. I finely went and got a body wave while I'm trying to grow my hair out a bit more. I love it!!! I wish I had done it sooner. I don't fuss with my hair as much now and it so easy to take care of. I also found a terrific hair stylist. God is good!
Ask your friends whose hair style you like. That's what I did and then prayed about it. I felt a peace about it all and the stylist I called was able to fit me in sooner rather than the new year. YAY!!
Dermatologists are no use. They do lots of tests and say: everything ok. Which is not. I never met any doctor who helped me in any case. I always had to cure myself.
I have fine hair and everytime I wash it, I shed a clump of hair but I still feel my hair density is the same as before I washed it. A hair stylist told me that some people with finer hair, shed more because they have a faster turn over of growth. Is this true?
@@justinhickoxcan you do a video on hair texture that changes when going gray? I used to have pretty thick course colored hair, when I completed my gray growout,it seems finer?
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! Again another great informational video. I really liked the tip on how to get conditioner to only the ends of shorter hair!! Question for you: If touching your hair makes it dirty and weighed down (which makes sense!) why and how does hair that hasn't been washed for a day or so hold a style longer/better?? Thanks again, always enjoy and learn from your videos!!!!
Thank you! Glad I can help! That's a great question. You're spot on and I don't know the exact answer but I want to look deeper into that now. My intuition would tell me it depends on the amount of oil your skin produces in a combination of the product one would use for volume as well as the overall condition of an individuals hair. Stimulating the scalp can stimulate the sebaceous glands which produce oil and could weigh hair down, where as most volumizing products add the dirty feeling without the heavy oils. So one part of the answer could be that the feeling you have of dirty hair comes from the product which has less oils therefore its a different kind of "dirty". Not sure of that makes sense.
So I have fine and thin hair, and androgenic alopecia which is just fuuuuuun. I use minoxidil, which helps hair growth, but the thing is, it makes my scalp dry and makes the hair on my scalp look dull and flat. I know conditioners shouldn't be put on roots because of build up, but then, how DO you keep the scalp moisturised? I use moisturising shampoo on my scalp, and a deep conditioner once a week. Is there anything else I could do for my scalp or is that about it?
My Hair is thinning but its fine. I've had Thyroid Cancer and now am in Post Menopausal stage. I've thinned in the receedibg like like a man. I'd like to color my hair in highlights and low lights to see if it discusses the area where my hairs completely fallen out. Not sure what to do to correct it. Any Suggestions?
THANK YOU! As a person with quite thick but fine hair, I've heard so many times, "" HOW can you have thick hair if it's fine?"" - No one seems to get it. Thin, and thick describe the density of your hair and are not related to fine and coarse. I have a friend who has extremely coarse hair, it's like a horse's tail, (gorgeous by the way, snow white and long and straight) but it's relatively thin. However, it appears to be thicker than my hair, which is baby fine in texture but uber-thick. So many times, because of the fine texture of my hair I will go for a haircut and get, "Geez, your hair is so thick!" But it doesn't look thick (aka dense) because the texture is baby-fine. I appreciate you setting this record straight!
I have thin, fine hair. It used to be a red, now it is strawberry blonde, the white is creeping in, people just think it’s blonde. My hubby always liked my hair long, but it now will look more thin and it gets stringy looking. I just got it cut 6 inches and it looks much thicker even though it isn’t. I would still like long hair, but at my age my hormones are making my hair fall out. Biotin supplements have helped with hair loss.
Justin I have been watching your videos for awhile and have learned many useful tips. Six months ago I had some skin cancer removed about the size of a dime just above and in front of my right ear. Dr. Said hair would not grow back on the incision butwould elsewhere. That whole side of my head seems sparse now. I have always had fine hair but a lot of it. Is there such a thing as trauma and what would you suggest?
Had skin cancer removed there as well . . . in the exact same location as yours! Am hoping Justin answers your question as my hair is now very sparse in that area as well. Very upsetting as my hair is fine AND THIN!
Meeee tooooi!! And COVID!! Telogen Effluviam came and I lost ALL the thick ones and my hair was THICK. Now all that’s left is the fine ones and it’s thin … omg.
Such great info. I think I use “thin” and “fine” interchangeably. After watching this, I believe my hair is fine, which - duh - my stylist has been saying for years. I should probably listen to him more. 😮
Thanks Justin. Love your channel. Short, fine hair girl here. Pixie type cut but cannot seem to get a cut I love. I ask for tapered sides and back and a little longer on top. How is tapering done? Razor, scissors , thinning shears?
I have fine hair but my stylist says I have a lot of it. I'm wondering about leave in conditioners? Are they good for your hair or do they weigh it down. I've been using Marc Anthony Repair Bond + Resculplex. What are your thoughts?
Back in the day when I was a teenager, I went to get my hair cut, and the stylist said "wow, you have really fine hair" and I said, "thank you". I thought he was giving me a compliment on my hair, lol.
In my country, most people have thin hair. Decades ago, when my mom was in USA and went to have haircut in some famous hair dresser's and all the employees wanted to check my mom's hair like it was some miracle to see such thin hair. 🙄
@carolann4087 😅🤣😂🤣
This is the cutest comment ❤❤❤❤
This is one of those core memories I would think about every day of my life... Got at least 30 years later 😂 I was smoking pot many years ago. I was with a good friend and we were enveloped in the deepest thought provoking discussions. He said something profound and I was stoned so I just said "Life is short".
With the most serious expression, he looks me in my eyes, then at his shorts, and with a straight face back at me to say, "Thank you. had em forever."
Same here lol
And genetics.
Rubbish , nutrition is not the main reason
Otherwise it would be easily remedied
@@Dragonfly-LazyDynamiteI gave myself body perms for many years. Now that I am older, I had to stop the perms. They were frying my fine hair.
Sleeping on pure 100 percent silk pillow cases really help fine hair too as hair just slides over the silk really helped me

Yes I’ve heard this ! I guess this is why silk bonnets are popular
Silk pillows are too hot with hot flashes I find.
@@alisonfaulkner47 I agree ! I am only 28 but I get them often and even when it’s cold out I don’t like it when my husband turns the heater on because I now sleep hot and they come on without warning it seems whereas he is fine
I’ve slept on satin pillow cases for 20 years and I take them when traveling. Helps prevent wrinkles as well.
Try red light therapy
It's proven that Rosemary oil doesn't work beyond the placebo effect

But off course , it doesnt hurt either. Its a product i think will flopp after some time. Like many other supplement's.

Thank you for your request. I will be sure to work on future video addressing that.
This is me!
Ha, ha ... I have fine hair, but enough for three people!
Thank you! My hair is fine but there is a ton of it. I’ve had many stylists not know what to do with it. It’s a relief to hear a stylist who knows the difference well.
I've always had comments from stylists being surprised how thick my hair was because it is apparently also fine.
Suggestion for a future video: How to speak “Salonese”, i.e. how to communicate and describe precisely what you want to your stylist or colorist. That would be soooo helpful!
Shouldn't stylists understand normal people?
I used to have thick fine hair. Post menopause I have thin fine hair! Minoxidil has helped!
I read it is for men so any side effects like beard growth?
@@chronic2023 No, because you’re not putting it on your face, you’re putting it on your head. It only works where you apply it. The women’s stuff doesn’t often work because it’s not strong enough and they put the pink tax on it. You really want to get the men’s. It’s the proper amount and you’ll actually see a difference.
A me non ha apportato alcun beneficio
Naah! That's a hormone thing you'll have to wait for menopause for that😅😅
Is Minoxidil the same as Rogaine?
I thought when my silky fine hair turned grey/silver/pewter/steel/white, I'd have more body. Didn't happen. I rarely use conditioner because I don't need it. I'm tired of it being halfway down my back. After the first of the year when things calm down, I'm going back to above-the-shoulder length. Having it this long helps nothing. It's usually piled on my head or in a ponytail anyway. New year, new look. 😊
The power of dimension in color!! This makes so much sense!
A few things that have helped my fine hair grow in better and appear more dense:
Good tips! Any high quality leave in conditioner recommendations?
What? I only wide tooth comb my hair in the shower even shampooing and conditioning and NEVER outside of it. It dries perfectly and needs no brushing, no blowdrying and I stopped needing to use product, no more frizz either.

I watched another video that said that for fine hair you should use a bit of conditioner on your roots, but it should be a VOLUMIZING conditioner because they’re lighter, and you can put a slightly heavier conditioner on the ends too if you feel you need to
Putting any conditioner on your roots with fine, thin hair weighs it down and makes it greasy for a lot of people.
You spray shampoo onto the roots as you style your hair?
@@winniecash1654 DRY shampoo spray, not real shampoo!!
@nschoess ok. Thanks for the clarification.
Dry shampoo makes my scalp break out!! Does anyone else have this problem? Dry spray volumizer does not cause my scalp to break out.
As a 78 yr old woman, hair vitamins and the right products are the key.
I don't quite know which hair vitamins are best

I feel ya. The hormone shift is a bitch. I had the covid loss as well. No fun.
I'm interested in this as well. Type 2b hair, lots of fine frizzy hair if I air dry.
@@justinhickox what heat protectant would you recommend?
I have thin hair and I brush it often because it tangles easily and it’s long. I love my hair even if it falls out. I like it flat not fluffed up!
Color makes my hair fall out. I stopped coloring a year ago and I have a lot less fall out. And my hair is thicker now.
I experienced that as well until I found Aveda a botanical product which actually enhances my hair’s body.
So true, i I personally didn't stop but started using ammonia free and my hair has never looked fuller with awesome volume.
Mine also..
Henna and/or indigo, my friend. No harsh chemicals-which even Aveda uses, despite its marketing-and thicker, healthier hair.
Same here. Now my hair is longer then my old profile picture. It’s natural grey, and it’s so strong and full. I would never had colored it if I would have known. It looks good on me!

@@justinhickox love i! Thank you so much Justin, I love your channel ❤️.
@@justinhickox awesome! Thank you so much! My hair has zero oil in it so o can’t wash it everyday so I’ll let you know day after tomorrow. 😆
Great video! What haircuts should people with thin and fine hair go for??
If I want to spice it up I use a clip (little flowers or other things, often things ment for kids becouse the adult ones look rediculously big on my small head with fine thin hair)
And I pin a lock to begin my ear on one side.

Fine hair that is thinning with loss of hair with age ,,,,PLEASE ???!!!!
I'll be honest I am kind of missing a "few" tips in your video !
I have fine, and now also thinning hair, here are the tips that made a difference for me :
- have a good brush : go for a flat boarbristle one.
Jojoba oil is all around good, and castor oil (not pure!) is great if you have thinning hair
- use heat protectant : protects your hair from frying, game changer for fine hair!
From a fine hair beggar who did not have internet growing up, and went through many trials and errors
Great advice
Thanks, good advice. ???? I got a perm in my hair for curl, but all in does is frizz up.

Oh geez 🙄
(My barber tried to convince my 9 year old self to wear hats and stuff in summer becouse it whas so suseptable to break and I couldn't afford to loze any)
I have had a straight bob with a straight pony for most my life.
Thank you for addressing how to condition short fine hair!!!❤
I get so upset because I can see my scalp my hair is very sparse. I wish I could do something about it but I will try your tips , thank you x
⭐❗❗❗ NEVER use any shampoo which contains SLS (sodium laurel sulfate) which makes your follicle DIE❗
Then also NEVER use any shampoo which is not see through - white not transparent ones contain SILICONE which is also damaging hair follicle❗
Then check your ZINC, POTASIUM, MAGNESIUM, IRON & vit D3 levels - you might need suplement them (especially if you're under stress which washes out magnesium from your body)
So true. Thanks for sharing, you explained what I suspected all my years.
That's why I stopped coloring my fine hair as well almost a year ago and I love the salt n pepper look❤
So I had beautiful natural greige hair as it started to gray. As I started going more white, it started to bother me got it colored blonde and it’s never been the same health wise. Any ideas on natural blonde coloring? I tried chamomile tea and not much difference
@@user-iv6ty3cd5i the only way is with chemicals. You could do strawberry blonde with a henna (mixture) and it truly looks lovely and natural.
I have fine and thin hair, peppered throughout with gray with a big grey streak in the front. I always wear it up because down looks so horrible.
So true! I do get lowlights and never put conditioner on roots it does help. I’ve also started taken vitamins which help
@@justinhickox I'd like to hear what products you would suggest for people to use with fine hair to maximize volume.
Looking forward to watching your video on "power of dimension in color"
As always, thank you for the informative video. I have long, fine and thin-ish hair that has been colored. I did go darker and it does look thicker but I still struggle with volume. Any product recommendations for volume for long hair would be appreciated. ❤. Thanks!!!
Really informative! Lots of good info, with a healthy touch of humor. THX!!
I have fine, long, naturally curly hair. Should I still avoid my roots with conditioner?
THANKYOU for explaining how to do conditioner on a pixie cut! I'm going to try that next time.
I have the same hair. Fine with alot of it! I do this too. Dry roots create different textures on me and frizz and flatten the top.
Okay I have been listening to you for a long time. You have changed my mind about color !! At 68 I still can learn 😂. You are a gem
I live 20 minutes from PDX. Have not colored my hair in 10 years. Blonde and gray. Silver strands. Was thinking about lowlights.
How do I determine what low or high are needed?
What about curly hair? If I don’t apply conditioner very close to my roots, they get super frizzy
@IndigooceanOrg Which laser helmet do you use? Thanks for very helpful and encouraging post!❤
Ugh, I have that same cowlick-part line that goes down the back of my head. I am so self-conscious about it.
@@Cat-qo3ht I had it too at the worst of the thinning. Now just on the very top of my head.

Mostly just goes up in a messy bun because I don't know what to do with it.
As someone with lots and lots of fine hair, this is very informative . Thank you 😊
I dont have fine hair.

I have fine hair and everytime I wash it, I shed a clump of hair but I still feel my hair density is the same as before I washed it. A hair stylist told me that some people with finer hair, shed more because they have a faster turn over of growth. Is this true?

Got those a lot too.
Would you please do an episode on how to style thinning fine hair dealing with hair loss at the temples
I remember Hickox and Friends in Portland many years ago! Always known as the best in town.
Euuuu i don’t know… just make me look fabulous, and you can do whatever you wish! I’d love it any way!!!
Or, you can have the perfect trifecta. Hypothyroid, overwhelming stress, menopause😢😅
you are not alone. Many people use it interchangeably.
