I wish I could find a hairdresser that could offer recommendations on what would look good for my age, hair texture and face shape. Recently had a bob cut and not happy. Thanks for the tips!
I’ve been growing out a pixie, and have just reached the point where it’s all starting to look one length… but it’s resulted in a chin length bob, and I’ve been hating how it makes me look… now I understand why!! I have a round face shape, and so it’s accentuating that! Nothing I can really do until it grows, and I was never planning to keep it at this length, but still a fun “aha” moment!!
I'm so glad I could help! One option that would work, but you may or may not want to do depending on your long term hair goals, is you can layer it a bit to take the volume out of the sides and create a bit more on top. This can also add more length to the face. Another little trick is to flat iron (and give it little to no c shape or bend) on only the sides. Then round brush the top. This will lay the sides more flat and give more volume to the top, which will also help elongate the face.
Thank you for going into detail of exactly why certain bobs work and why. It's super informative and explains why several bobs I've had over the years worked or didn't work. I never understood why it didn't look great, and now i do.
@@justinhickox the week is going well. Short work week! Yay! Taking a quick trip this weekend to see my college son, so double yay! Hoping you and Dionna have a great weekend!

I'm from the Houston area but I really like my stylist so I won't change. I talk to her about everything you are telling us and she agrees with you. I've been growing out a super short pixie for 8 months and can't wait to have mine cut into a bob.
I’ve had a slightly angled bob style for most of the last 10-15 years. The best trick for ease of styling and maintenance for me was when I got brave enough to do an undercut! Have you ever done a video on this? If not I would love to see one. My hair is thick and wavy especially at the nape of my neck and that hair seems to grow or show growth more quickly. Having an undercut makes my blowouts so much easier and the cut lays and shapes so much better. All I need is a few swipes in front and on sides with a flat iron and I’m good to go. I got the inspiration from Instagramer, Jocelyn McClellan.
I have thick wavy hair as well and a similar bob with an undercut....blowouts/styling are now so quick and easy! I don't know if I will ever go back to long hair:)
I’ve followed Chris Jones for a long time and wish he could tend to my bob but, living in Scotland, it’s not gonna happen ☹️ I get a lot of inspiration from his posts. I wish you could do my hair also, but alas 😒 Love all you put out there Justin. All makes a lot of sense 👍♥️
Hey Linda! He's amazing right! I'm very impressed with his work. Thank you for the kind words! Who knows...maybe someday I'll be around the area. My wife and I DO love to travel! :)
What about folks who live in small town USA🙄 The number one reason I cut my own hair......because it is almost impossible to find someone capable of cutting hair like this.
I moved from a big city to a small town. Three failed bob haircuts later, I've decided to trek the 3-hour drive to my former stylist, who can cut a good bob like Justin describes here. I found that hair cutters here in the small town TALK like they will do what I describe, but absolutely do NOT have the skill to actually execute the haircut. I'm done with it. Running back to my big-city stylist ASAP. Also, I saw a woman at my workplace who has a really great precision cut and asked her where she goes. She said she drives 4 hours to a stylist who can do her cut, and that she could not find someone here who could do it. So, yeah, it's hard to get a good cut in a small town. The vast majority of women here have all-one-length, mid-back length hair ... and that is exactly how they cut my bob, no matter what they SAY they will do.
You are absolutely right, they don’t know how to separate hair into zones, how to prep hair and then how to do a precision scissor cut, they use raisers or even worse clippers🤦🏻♀️ I’m yet to find a good pair of hands! No luck so far.. Richmond, VA!
@@teamtdm4life704 I agree 100%. I have to tell them......DO NOT USE A RAZOR on my hair. It is very dry, very wiry, curly.......any time they have used a razor on my hair it was a disaster. Destroyed my hair. Don't they learn "layering". Not feathering......layering. I haven't had a good hair cut in years.....maybe 10.
I’m so lucky in that I often have complete strangers tell me how much they like my bob. I’m always sure to thank them (once I’m over my surprise - I’m 75!) and tell my wonderful hair dresser how many compliments I receive.
Many times I will bring pictures tell them how I find it thin around my ear, explain the length I need (full face), and how short hair makes me look fat, explain that I want the angle to follow my jawline…..blah, blah , blah is what they hear, and I end up crying on my way home!
Great video. Gosh, who would have thought bobs could be so complex. I have naturally curly but thin hair that never sits flat even when ironed to death. A few years ago I wanted a long blunt cut bob but ended up with a chin length angled graduated bob which the stylist insisted on doing. Not a good look and a complete mare to style 😩
OK Justin! You're wearing me down on the bob thing. I have always, always resisted getting a bob because I have always thought of them as corporate or stuffy and not free-spirited like me (I'm very very much like your wife). I saw her haircut and my reaction was 'oooooh. I could get into that.' Maybe... I still watch every video and learn something. Any chance you can make a video tour of your ink. I always try to figure out what's on your arms, but you move too fast!😜
I have been to so many salons who dont know these concepts. How do I ensure they actually know what they are doing. My last hair cut was the worst I have ever had. The stylist ensured me she knew exactly what i wanted. She didnt!
I just got my hair cut and instead of my usual angled bob, he cut it straight and too short. I can’t wait for it to grow out. I love the angle on my bob 😢
PLEASE tell me where to go in DELRAY BEACH FLORIDA, for a GREAT BOB! I haven't found the ideal bob here, and I'm lookin, for yrs too! Looking for forward to your newsletter 🥰
I’m growing out my pixie to a potential layered bob style. Right now my sides are mid ear. I look like a mushroom top. 😂😂 Whenever I hit this stage my stylist gets a 911 call from me for a pixie cut. I’m powering through it this time.
I'm doing the same thing and my hair is now just past my ears. I've using bobby pins and headbands to keep it out of my face and it's driving me crazy 😂
The pain is real of growing it so glad I’m not alone! Hair barrettes and head band elastics are norm now but my hair still looks like 🤦♀ 😂😂@@cynthiamcwhorter6721
Mine grew out during lockdown and cos l could n't go to the hairdressers l just kept trimming the layers all one length as they grew. By the time salons were open l hadxa chin length bob with a fringe ( bangs) and hairdresser keeps trimming now!! Got to say l love a bob. Mine looks a bit like Anna Wintour's (, if it's good enough for her!!!!!).
I live in Denver, CO and it has been extremely difficult to find someone who knows how to cut a great Bob! How does one go about finding a good stylist. I have tried countless people over the years, and it’s not easy at all. Any tips??? The internet is full of salons that seem geared to mostly long hair and highlights. I would appreciate any advice!
Thank you for sharing these tips. Do you know of an amazing hairstylist in Los Angeles? For years, I have been looking for a stylist that can give me a bob hairstyle exactly as you were describing here in this video.
Hi Justin, I'm sorry for responding late to your reply for a good hairstylist in L.A., I couldn't find the link to see where to go for a nice normal bob haircut. Please if you can let me know. Thank you again
Great question. Depends on your hairline as well. If you have a higher hairline, sometimes you can elongate the neck by taking the length up shorter, closer to the neckline. But, if your hairline is lower, having the length longer will hide the neck.
Hi Justin new sub here and proud! My question; I’m 63 long hair I’m wanting a Bob cut and have a great stylist, but I want the longer Bob because I do not want the front portions pointing at my chin area. I have a heart shaped face, and I don’t have a full face. My face is something like Susie’s from your hair challenge video about 10 months ago if this helps you decide for me, but I want a longer Bob than Susie’s So isn’t it best to go with the longer Bob ? So that I can also do updo’s! Loving your channel and your personality thanks for being real!!!!! ❤need help now as next week is my hair appt 😂 the long Bob I’m referring to is Giuliano Bob like a 12 inch Bob ? Please help
Hi, I have fine hair, thinning along the part line, it has grown long since 2020 but now feels shapeless and unattractive. I am considering a long bob, so not a massive change but worried about how fine hair would sit and keep the shape. Any suggestions please?
At 4:18 and 4:19 there are too bobs that have more layering in the back but still angled. Would this work on almost 50 year old with thinning hair and round face? Looking for perfect cut for sons wedding in 1 week. Thanks and love your videos
I might just have to have to fly to Houston Texas for our next holiday just so I can get my haircut into a Bob, I don’t seem to trust anyone cutting my hair into a particular style where I live in Australia, I mainly just get my hair stylist to give my hair a little trim but that’s about it, I have my hair coloured, or I’d love You to cut my hair for me…Happy Easter 🐣 from Queensland Australia 🦘🐨🐣🐣🐣
Hey Justin! Question for you, I have a square jawline and my Bob length falls @ my collarbone. Would you say that’s a good length for a person like myself w/ a square shape face? If I go shorter I would think that would emphasize my jawline even more.😊
Justin, HELP! I’m nearing 60… yes, today IS my birthday. I have naturally wavy-loose curls, thinning, never colored, strawberry blonde hair. I wear it in a bob. PROBLEM: how do I talk with stylist about getting the best cut for my face? And why are you so far away?! ~Kelly, way down in St. Louis, MO
I desperately need someone in Ocala FL. I have lived in Ocala for 7 years and have yet to find someone that knows what there doing. I get a terrible cut then I let it grow out and try someone else. Just to go get another bad cut. When I see a lady with a good cut I asked who did it and the Salon name. Frustrated.
Is it even possible to have a strong line, in order to feign thickness, while also having layers for movement and volume? I have an oblong oval face and very fine , stick straight hair -- much less of it than I used to have. I watched this, currently have a somewhat boxy bob with bangs -- I need bangs -- but I hate the side view. No A frame here, managed to grow that disaster out after a long time beloved stylist HACKED IT in order to cut out the orange she created when she tried to lighten my base. With bleach, no toner, and without doing a strand test 🤪. Just looking for a general answer, I realize I am not featured as a makeover here -- I'd like to know what I can tell my new stylist. She is very good and very open to feedback. My old one wasn't. Thanks!
Hi I have always tinted my hair blonde my roots are now white but look a pretty nice colour, I am using 10 & 10/3 koleston 20 vol and I’m happy with the colour I’m just not happy doing it all the time so wanted to know if I were to grow the colour out would it just be grow it out and wait or is there any other way and when it is grown out is there anything I could shampoo in to take the harshness off it being so white thank you 😊
Angle is not good for many especially with wavy and abundant hair and a small face. It becomes too bulky and messy around the face and neck. That is the talent ..do the necessary texture and layers. If not done right, it destroys the haircut. Also impossible to pull it back if we need to. Can you talk about the length around the face both on top or sides for wavy and abundant hair? Most of your models have straight hair . Thanks
You didn’t mention having a fringe, or not. Sometimes a fringed bob can look really cool or on some people it can make them look frumpy and not suit their face shape (or hair) at all
How do I ask for that method of cutting that is opposite of the undercut. I want my bob to flip, naturally, but especially if I style a flip. I have natural wave and I do not like the undercut in the least. Years ago, a good hairdresser asked me if I wanted it undercut or _____cut. I don't remember the term and no one seems to know what the heck I am talking about. Thanks in advance!
Changing up my standard bob tomorrow and am willing to get some kind of bangs. I don't have a long forehead or high hairline, I do have a double chin (ish) that I always want to deemphasize. And I have unnatural-natural wave in certain parts (from anesthesia/surgeries) that I like, but sometimes makes my hair heavy and earmuffy. Almost 50, blonde, fine thick hair. Advice on type of bangs, length in front, and type of layers?
Have fun! Change is always exciting. It's really hard to give advice on bangs without seeing your face shape and hairline. If you have a shorter forehead, I would consider living the bangs on the longer side though. Maybe side swept bang. If bangs are too short, they lack the ability to get control and will lay straight down regardless of if you want them to or not. Length will give them a bit more versatility. AND, you can always go shorter....
@@justinhickox Thanks so much! I can never figure out my face shape because all I see is my double-chin. 🤮 Makes me feel LONG, but I'm probably more round, or heart. I like the long bangs advice. I want something edgy but not severe . . like beach edgy, not city edgy. 😁
I need a trim now. I want only the back cut but dread going in because before I know it everything is shorter. I have the full face and short neck… and the short neck is why I need a trim. 😂.
I totally hear you!! It’s tough, my best advice is to just be obnoxious about expressing that NOTHING in front of the ear (or wherever you want more length) doesn’t get cut at all. You don’t want the ends trimmed…nothing. You want that part clipped out of the way and only the hair not clipped away touched at all.
I've always had longer hair and I want to go shorter but I don't trust my hair dresser to be honest. Do you still cut hair? I would be willing to travel, unless you know someone in Ohio that is a good as you.
Omg, I’m in Ohio and my girl is ok, but never consistent and sometimes it’s not even. So guess what I end up cutting it myself after. Yes I have some skills former cosmetology but it is very hard to do it. I just want even, consistent bob!!!! I’m ready to head to Canada after seeing glam girl gabby’s hair cut. The connection from the back to the front over he ears is the crucial part. My family thinks I’m too picky and a little crazy. But I think they don’t really understand how this plain hair cut is so difficult and that crucial part makes it it hang weird and it drives me nuts.
@@reneemaynard4785 good luck…I wish I could take my head off, cut and put it back on. Lol. check out this guy in Australia, Adam Ciaccia. Some of the most beautiful haircuts. Can’t fly to Australia either.
Do you know any fantastic hairstylists in Buffalo NY? My hair is way too long and after having two bad experiences I'm desperate but afraid. I have a double chin and wear glasses and the cuts I've gotten seem way too heavy, too much bangs etc. Is there a bob for me?
I don't know in that area off the top of my head. Bumble and Bumble in Downtown New York is amazing but may be a bit far from you depending on how far you want to travel. Sign up for my newsletter though. I will be sharing anyone I learn about through that.

Sure you DON’T. I guarantee you have a generic hillbilly cut from a generic hillbilly so called stylist.
If your in Massachusetts, Worcester area Rachel at hair adventure is ahmazing ! She did my bob today, love it. Also amazing colorist.
Good tips Thanks
I absolutely love watching all your videos! Keep them coming ❤
Jessica Mikulski at Pavo Salon in Memphis, TN is GREAT at bobs an pixie cuts. She has been cutting my hair for years and she is fabulous.
How great to get an actual name of a stylist & the salon!
I’m in Australia, so no visiting chris for me. But, I appreciate your tips!
Any recommendations in the Milwaukee area?
Great content. Informative. Thank you Justin.
Thanks for recommending a stylist.
Any recommendations for someone in San Antonio Texas?
Love all the bob info always!! Thank you! ❤️
I love your videos and information justin! I wish i could get you to do my hair!!! I live in uk.
Would love your recommendations for stylists in Miami Ft. Lauderdale or West Palm Beach. Thank you!!
In the Houston area, excited to check out Chris!
Another great video. I love having a great bob. Looks good on me and it does make a classy look
I’m growing out my pixie to a potential layered bob style. Right now my sides are mid ear. I look like a mushroom top. 😂😂 Whenever I hit this stage my stylist gets a 911 call from me for a pixie cut. I’m powering through it this time.
Me too! My New Year’s Resolution was to not have a haircut until September!
Good luck!🌸
What do you suggest for someone with a round face and Curley hair?
A bit more length in the front (longer than the chin) and more layering on the sides to take the volume out of the sides.
Best bob length for a short neck? I would think a little longer like dusting the shoulder but what what would you say
Great question. Depends on your hairline as well. If you have a higher hairline, sometimes you can elongate the neck by taking the length up shorter, closer to the neckline. But, if your hairline is lower, having the length longer will hide the neck.
I have a long face curly hair but i haven't been able to find the right cut 🙃 I do love bobs i feel it makes me look better .not sure lol
Yup…he’s the Bob guy…did Dominique’s…amazing ‼️✨
Justin, en New York sabes los estilistas hacen cortes Bob con calidad?❤
I actually feel like the longer in front shorter in back shape drags the face down. I like when the hair goes back to frame the face .
Me too😢!
@@stellarichardson9756 glad to know I’m not alone!
At 4:18 and 4:19 there are too bobs that have more layering in the back but still angled. Would this work on almost 50 year old with thinning hair and round face? Looking for perfect cut for sons wedding in 1 week. Thanks and love your videos
I'm currently growing out a pixie
and I cut it into a short square bob
Any ideas on how to grow it out
looking as good as possible
I might just have to have to fly to Houston Texas for our next holiday just so I can get my haircut into a Bob, I don’t seem to trust anyone cutting my hair into a particular style where I live in Australia, I mainly just get my hair stylist to give my hair a little trim but that’s about it, I have my hair coloured, or I’d love You to cut my hair for me…Happy Easter 🐣 from Queensland Australia 🦘🐨🐣🐣🐣
Justin, check out hair by Ally Barone at White Opal Hair Salon in Oakhurst, NJ. Another great bob stylist.
I just want to say thank you men u are great ❤❤
I have curly hair… curly in the back… straighter in the front.. what cut is best? Are you in newyork?
Very great bob tips here!
Is the bob cut for everyone? Will an oblong narrow face with long neck support a “short by chin length” bob style? TY!!
I live in New York , any suggestions on a favorite bob stylist ? Help 😊
Would love for you to find someone that does great Bob's in Minnesota!!!!
Frustrated.
I can’t find anybody in Florida at all.
Thanks!
I just went to Chris Jones account and see that he’s the stylist that does Jocelyn McClellan’s great bob!
Can you recommend someone in Minnesota??? I can’t seem to find anyone who’s good here?? Please! Thank you!
Do you know or are you able to recommend anyone in the Phoenix area that is amazing with hair? Preferably not too high end but mid range maybe.
Where in Houston is Chris Jones ?
Hi I have always tinted my hair blonde my roots are now white but look a pretty nice colour, I am using 10 & 10/3 koleston 20 vol and I’m happy with the colour I’m just not happy doing it all the time so wanted to know if I were to grow the colour out would it just be grow it out and wait or is there any other way and when it is grown out is there anything I could shampoo in to take the harshness off it being so white thank you 😊
Thanks Justin. 😊
when i ask for layers, the hairdresser cuts my hair too short... always...
Thanks
Thanks for another great video, Justin.Wish you lived in my area.
In Albuquerque, Laura Rodriguez at Central Park Hair studio.
You didn’t mention having a fringe, or not. Sometimes a fringed bob can look really cool or on some people it can make them look frumpy and not suit their face shape (or hair) at all
What type of bob is good for heart shaped faces and wavy hair? Without too many layers because when I get layers it always looks like a mullet. 😢
Do you recommend someone in Colorado?
I have a hairstyle called an A-line bob cut. what can I do to take care of that?
Je découvre votre chaîne mais j’habite en France et pas trouvé de coiffeur top!
Good information! Thanks.
I have wavy thick hair and a round face. Is a very short bob better?
I’m running to Houston and I live a couple of hours away. He can take all my money
Where can I find the boletin?
I need a trim now. I want only the back cut but dread going in because before I know it everything is shorter. I have the full face and short neck… and the short neck is why I need a trim. 😂.
I totally hear you!! It’s tough, my best advice is to just be obnoxious about expressing that NOTHING in front of the ear (or wherever you want more length) doesn’t get cut at all. You don’t want the ends trimmed…nothing. You want that part clipped out of the way and only the hair not clipped away touched at all.
@@justinhickox Thanks! So grateful to have found your channel mid pandemic!!
Do you know anyone around Fayetteville, NC who does a great bob?
Need a great cut and colorist in North Carolina. 🙏
I love my chin length slightly A-Line Bob.....My stylist Rhonda Keno is AMAZING located in San Diego CA.
Please! I need someone north of Boston. I’ve even given my hair dresser pictures and I end up with the same boring cut.
I saw glam girl tabby’s hair and love her bob!! I’m also in Ohio, just moved to Columbus and don’t know where to go. It’s so hard to find a stylist.
@@reneemaynard4785 good luck…I wish I could take my head off, cut and put it back on. Lol. check out this guy in Australia, Adam Ciaccia. Some of the most beautiful haircuts. Can’t fly to Australia either.
Any recommended stylists in northern Virginia or DC?
Do you know any fantastic hairstylists in Buffalo NY? My hair is way too long and after having two bad experiences I'm desperate but afraid. I have a double chin and wear glasses and the cuts I've gotten seem way too heavy, too much bangs etc. Is there a bob for me?
I don't know in that area off the top of my head. Bumble and Bumble in Downtown New York is amazing but may be a bit far from you depending on how far you want to travel. Sign up for my newsletter though. I will be sharing anyone I learn about through that.
