Hoffman, Ledger and Phoenix's performances in these films are indescribable. All incredibly memorable and breathtaking performances. Such a tough choice
Most deserved. I know many wanted Ledger to win this one, but my god. Hoffman truly was Truman Capote. From the way he spoke to the mannerisms he had, he became Capote. This is one of the most deserved Academy Award wins for acting that there is.
Especially considering what odds Truman had to contend with at such an early age, and rise above the smallness of people to become legend. What I regretted for him, was his need for acceptance from people not worthy of him.
I could just see/feel the genuine good feeling from everyone in the room, even the other nominees. I think they all knew his performance was so transformative and brilliant and that he was so deserving. PSH has always been overlooked by the public and this was his due from his peers.
We never know what the people around us are going through in their lives. Addiction is a very powerful thing. For some people it's hard to endure the things they go through. Let's not criticize the circumstances of his death. Just go back and pop in one of your favorite Philip Seymour Hoffman movies and remember him in that way.
@cassadaga ~ Perfectly said. And it is now (don’t know year) known that addiction can be genetically caused. I *LOVED* Philip Seymour Hoffman in “Charlie Wilson’s War”. Leaving his lady & his children had to have been difficult enough. Also being a blessed mother of a terrific son I too reared alone causes me to feel extremely heavily for his dear mother. R.I.P. Philip Seymour Hoffman. You made a difference.
I rewatch Doubt and Capote every few years. But I really can't get over his characterization of an obnoxious snob who meets an untimely end in The Talented Mr. Ripley. It's a small supporting role, but his character and, in particular, his death is the fulcrum which redirects the path of the plot into a classic cat and mouse game -- the murder investigation. Think about what performances we have missed since he died.
And the "incompetent" would still say that your post makes absolutely no sense. Someone with awards, accolades, fame, fortune, respect, CANNOT be underrated. Stop throwing the goddamn word around, or will you finally please describe why you think he's so underrated?
He arguably should have won in 2009, too, in the same category for Doubt. Had that happened, he'd have beaten Heath Ledger again. Both of them, great talents, now gone - and gone far too soon.
Philip Seymour Hoffman is my favorite actor, and Capote is the movie that turned me into a film buff when I saw it for the first time. I am so glad that he won, because he deserved it! He did an amazing job! HOWEVER, Heath's Brokeback Mountain performance is absolutely amazing as well, and seeing his disappointment when he doesn't hear his name called really breaks my heart. He never got to hear his name called... :(
Sometimes it appears that for the people who didnt win are relieved that they didnt have to go up there and at the same time being disappointed with a bitter sweet feeling.
Man, hard to watch. Such a talented dude. You can listen to his speech and tell he was a good, down to earth guy with a miraculous talent. Such a waste, he was so happy to be at the party.
I feel more angry than sad. I'm sad, but somehow I am angry against him. I remember when I saw him the first time it was in Ripley, then Capote etc, and I was surprised to see him in hunger game... But he was able to switch from commercial stuff to more serious movies like an true actor. It's a great loss, he seems generous and so, so nice. He was a real talent. I really feel for his family :(
Philip was a tremendous actor, a true artist in every sense of the word. Someone who had integrity, an amazingly high level of innate intelligence, and who wasn't afraid to take chances by adapting to any given situation by being totally vulnerable and honest within our societal realm of BS!
Onyinye Egbuna he said "I love you Indiana". His sister Summer and her husband Casey Affleck just had a baby boy and they named him after River's character in Indiana Jones.
Brad Nealon He's established and well respected in the acting community. Just because he's never won an Oscar doesn't deem him underrated. People love throwing that term around without studying the meaning of it.
Brad Nealon OKAY FOR ALL THOSE WHO CANNOT READ AND WOUK D LIKE TO HEAR MY OPINION: I believe Joaquin Phoenix is one of the most underrated actors of all time. Forget awards, accolades, etc. I'm talking about pure talent
@@trav9887 I saw both and honestly, it's pretty close. Both were outstanding performances. Both actors completely vanished into their characters. Wouldn't want to be the one making that choice...
PSH was such a versatile actor. He was completely different in every role he played. And Heath Ledger would have had an amazing career if he'd lived. RIP to both. They are mixed.
Just seeing him I get ANGRY at him even now for leaving us so suddenly. I loved him from his incredible small roles in Almost Famous, Boogie Nights etc.as well.
Heath Ledger, Philip Seymour Hoffman and James Gandolfini were among the very best actors of their generation. I would say all three of them top 10 guys in terms of genius. Philip was the number 1 I guess. Big big loss, I haven't quite got used with the idea that they're no longer here, that they will no longer make movies. It comes to mind also a huge loss long ago was John Cazale. He was a genius who died too young also. Acted in so few films: The GodfatherI and II, The Conversation, Dog Day Afternoon and The Deer Hunter. He was of that rare talent also.
***** All anyone can really say ultimately is their personal opinions, which will always be limited and subjective. Film critics severely disagree with one another all the time. If people needed credentials to manifest what they think the world would be much worse. And what is nice about the internet is that anyone can come here and disagree creating a healthy discussion. Unfortunately most people are plain aggressive like you. Or perhaps trollers, behaviors that destroy the and purpose of the web. Thank God I have DVD's of PSH's Great Performance. I watched him in many supporting roles and followed him for years. Capote was a role of a Lifetime. Thank God I got to watch PSH win his Oscar.
Phil stood in his shoes and owned them.. and not everybody is that...He is what he is...and defends the people who need it... a wonderful man... a true friend, one who would not turn his back on you in a burning house...

The right person won for Capote, but i think Heath Ledger was also great in Brokeback Mountain. and it was so nice to see Heath smiling when the camera was on him and at the Oscars, since he seemed so anti Hollywood.
My favorite Oscar speech. I love how he kisses three women on his way to the stage, and then devotes so much time to his mother. He could summon strong masculine energy when it was needed (think his amazing turn as the heavy in Mission Impossible); but he was a profoundly, beautifully, heart-breakingly feminine man.
Hoffman became Capote for his role. Saw some Capote interviews after watching the film... I actually couldn't tell the difference through voice alone. One of the greatest performance of acting...
