Doc and Jr scalp the Bermuda lawn and aerate the front. Doc explains dethatching and verticutting and why you need to be careful. When Bermuda lawns get LONG in the summer we often have to scalp them down to a manageable height. This thinning or scalping process is a great time to do a lawn aeration. Aerating the Bermuda lawn greatly helps with water infiltration, and nutrients.

Have you looked into the Allett verticutter cartridges?
I want an allett just for the sweeper and thatcher.
Looks like they work great but that’s about a $700 cartridge plus the cost of the mower. Would be great if the residential dethatch/scarifier companies would come up with a cost effective verticutter solution for the warm season Bermuda folks. I pinged SunJoe but they said they don’t have anything in the works at the moment.
I've seen a few reports where the alliett or it might be another one? Kensington?? has the plastic gears in them and they strip very fast??

Hi doc, i did the “hard cut” at my front yard, put pgf and carbon on it. it looks terrible for one week, i cant even look on it. But after week with lots of rain, it looks amazing, dark green. Thanks doc
Doc you’re not fat and you are probably in better shape than most of us because you do a lot of yard work which is very physical! 💪🏻lol
If only there was infinite amount of time per day lol. Takes some serious dedication to do all this work yourself. Pretty much a 2nd full time job it appears

I have a 2500E triplex verticutters. Used this afternoon. Work amazing. I dont use scarifier anymore. Thanks for the tips. I'm in Atlanta area you can borrow mine.
What would you recommend if a Bermuda lawn does have a lot of thatch that needs to be removed?

Doc, I’m looking at scalping, aerating, then leveling with something you’ve recommended in another video. My yard was sodded around a year ago and the builder didn’t care to level it first. Is there any reason I should wait to level? You mentioned in this video that it’s good to leave the holes open

great video. everytime i mow (every 2-3 days at 3/4 inch) my lawn looks like yours after the scalp. I just can't get the green to fully recover. and it rained 4" last weekend! more PGF??? Let it grow longer? I tried a 1/2 inch scalp and ended up with deep scalps in some spots that have not recovered after 6 weeks. I'm at a loss what to do.
I must say as a landscaper, I disagree with removing the plugs. By taking them away, you're removing soil from the lawn. Over time and several aerates, this completely removes the top soil on the lawn and forces unnecessary top dressing.
The point of CORE aeration is to relieve compaction. Leave the plugs and they'll fill up the holes in 1-2 weeks. If you don't want to remove soil, then use a solid tine spike.
Damn. I wish this video included the SunJoe instead because I'm curious if we would've gotten the same results. I pulled the trigger using the SunJoe scarifier on my Bermuda lawn back in June before the extreme heat. Thankfully, during that time we had a week of rain that really helped my lawn bounce back. Despite the info, I really think this has helped my lawn immensely. My lawn looks more full and uniform. If you do choose to use it, do it during growing season (but not when it's too hot) when there's a lot of rain in the forecast. Make sure to fertilize after doing it and water it in. My lawn looked really really rough afterwards, but bounced back really well. This has been the best my lawn has looked since starting to care for it

Doc, how do you avoid puncturing your sprinkler heads with the aerator?
Just wanted to say thanks for the tip about those small metal garden fences to prop up drooping plants/flowers, got some for my 4-o-clocks, and they look so much better now, though im curious why you're not putting the humi-char down with the aeration done? Seems like it would be a good time to get it down deep?

The drone view of the scalping process was oddly satisfying to watch. Also, it looks like you could attach something to the back of the aerator to catch those plugs. Fabrication time!
I use my Walker to pick up the plugs, works like a charm...
You need to make an aerator that catches the plugs too! You could sell that! Lol
Could it be the depth of those blades that is tearing up the runners on that cutter? Hey Doc, why not just use the spikes to punch the holes so you don't have all the plugs to pick up?
It wouldn't hurt to at least try it one time and see how it turns out
Simply punching holes does not serve the same purpose, or have the same benefits, as core aeration.

Allett has that power sweeper attachment.
Do you think you could talk a local golf course into loaning you a verticutter?
Maybe use a beefy backpack blower for the cores?

I got a buddy with a cnc machine, if you spec it out you can mill whatever fitting design or whatever that can do the vertical- hit me up if interested. Love the vids, I covet your lawn

Same. Seems like fixing something that ain’t broke. I’ve got Meyer Zoysia that I dethatched this year for the first time in 15 years even though it looked good last year. A couple applications of Anderson’s PGF that he recommended and a bag of Ironite and it looks like a putting green, and that is being cut by the yard guy at 2” or so with an ExMark 30” rotary mower. I want a good looking lawn but no way I could go through this level of maintenance or thousands for fancy equipment. To each their own I guess.
I've had pretty good success using a plastic leaf rake (tractor supply sales them).raking them in piles and then using a snow shovel and scooping them all up and putting them in the wheelbarrow.. it's still time consuming though.. also you kind of contradicted yourself you said that plugs doesn't do anything for the soil but under the tree you said there's a lot of huma char and good stuff in them??
Why push, push, push if you then have to thin. Wouldn’t a lower application rate give a similar result with far less work.
What perhaps is the cause of my McLane leaving grooves in the lawn. Watched video on adjusting blades to bed knife and it's cutting much, much better, but still leaving grooves marks at each pass.
I'm looking at a McLane, but am concerned about whether or not I can physically operate/maneuver it. (I had a "burst fracture" of my L2 vertebae and had kyphoplasty surgery in the spring of 2019.) How heavy is it? How much man- (woman-) handling is necessary????
Watch Jess (the good witch) cutting in some of the videos. She weighs about 90 lbs soaking wet. It's the same as any mower and is actually very easy to use.
This video just wore me out. I have the lawn sweeper and use it for picking up grass clippings as well as leaves in the fall. My lot is just shy of 1 acre, I took your advise and used the Gorilla tape and it works great to keep everything going in the bag, but is truly a work out - no need to have a treadmill.
Just wondering, if the blade is ripping it up going the way the blade spins, what if the blade spun the opposite way? Might just do the same but could do the job you’re after better.
Why not just use the verticutter that works and get rid of the one that doesn't? Who needs two verticutters?
Wow ... I didn't hear you mention or see you flag the irrigation heads before aerating so I presume you know your yard so well that you guys knew where to avoid the irrigation. What is a good or decent sweeper for the plugs. My first year trying to do all this stuff and as a retiree I see that I need a son nearby and some other helpers....haha. Just need a good sweeper ... do you recommend that Agri Fab?

Why don't you use a pull behind sweeper for your plugs with your John Deere? This is what I do and it works great.

Why do you have to scalp the lawn to aerate it, or is the scalping for a separate reason?
Can you backlap, or take the blades off and switch them around to facing the other direction. That hook getting under the grass and coming up as you move forward is why it’s ripping roots up, if it was instead cutting down in the front I think it would work right. You’re basically cutting up instead of down the way it’s running right now. If you can backlap that reel and run it I’ll bet it work work like a charm.

Great videos, I used the allet with the scarifier on a higher then usal hight to pick up the plugs, made it easy 👌

I water every 3 days. I aerate the day of watering. Then I actually let my plugs sit for 2 whole days and roller over them with a giant lawn roller. The cores, or plugs, turn to sand and disappear in the lawn before topsoiling anyhow.
That probably only works for people in Florida LOL here in Georgia we have red clay and after 2 days these things actually turn into rocks, no joke, especially this time of the year
Is there something I can spray on bermuda that sprouts up in our landscape beds that wont hurt the plants?
Go to the DO MY OWN website and ask them. There is something that will SLOW any growth and not harm plants.

Hello Doc. I love your videos. I am in the Sandhills region of North Carolina and I have GN(Greg Norman) Zoysia and I am very peculiar about it. I use a Ryan verticutter on mine and it does great. I know we are comparing apples and oranges but I thought I’d share what I use. I used to use a John Deere T2O greens mower but that was too much work. I switched to a Walker GHS and it is the beat mower I have ever used. It stripes beautifully. I keep it at about 1 1/2 inches and now at least 2 times a week. I also use Lesco products and I’ve found that to be the best on the market. I get my Lesco products from John Deere Landscapes.
Are you using the fixed blade or the flail blade on the Ryan?
Can't you rent those type of verticals at home depot like you can a aerator? Maybe some rentals don't have them. But if I was you doc I would try a gas powered one. I know billy goat makes vertcutters. I know mowers direct use to carry them online with free shipping

Ok, Doc now I am confuse, I just started seeing progress on my Bermuda, work from scratch, since last year, Why scalp and aerate in the middle of summer? Specially if the lawn is looking good, I am following your Bermuda calendar and according to your calendar scalping is on Spring. Why do it?

Question Doc. After the summer "hard cut/scalp", do you recommend catching the clipping for a few cuts afterwards?
No as long as you don't have piles return them.
Why didn’t you use the verticutter that worked in the back on the front?
Also your yard is perfect why do you say it needs to be aerated? How can you tell and what would happen if you don’t aerate it? I’ve never done that and my Bermuda is thick and nothing wrong?
