Doc goes over summer lawn scalping and why he does it every year. Most lawns are long from the summer drought and heat and hitting the RESET button will being your lawn back to the that pretty short spring look.

For those of us in Texas who are dealing with drought and record or near record temperatures, should we still scalp and core or spike aerate?

We have a severe drought here in Forney, TX. We have holes in our yard because the city is asking us to cut down on watering the yard. We now have to use soaker hoses on our foundation. What should I do different because of course our grass is starting to brown we are watering 3 days a week. Please help. I do not know what to do. I had our yard looking so good! We also have had 100+ days since the first of June. This is the hottest summer since 1980 according to the weatherman.😞

Nice vid. Always funny in the US when 1 inch or half an inch is short or a scalp. For some reason we do our bermuda/couch at 10-25mm as the normal mowing height, but some guys go lower! Also, Its so crazy how you guys dont need pool fences. In australia you have to have intense fences.

Really have enjoyed learning from your videos the last two or three years. Cool season here (Mid-Michigan). Now a dedicated Anderson's products fan and user. My lawn looks nowhere near as good as yours at its best, but it is much, much better than when we purchased our house almost seven years ago. Anyway, looking very forward to the planned 55 forthcoming videos. Thanks so much!

I don’t have a reel mower, just a regular rotary mower. As well all know rotary can only go so low. What I’ve found is placing a few extra pounds on the deck to really weigh it down and push into the grass. One important note, SHARPEN your blade before doing this. Not only does it cut better but, damn does it make scalping much much easier.
I do this with my lawn every year and it looks bad at first but the end results are amazing. Like Doc said, cut low, and feed, feed, feed along with irrigation and the lawn will love it, in no time that green will be right on top 👍🏼

I have spent the past 10 minutes looking for the reset button all over my yard, but I can’t seem to find it. These darn construction workers must have buried it or something. I just can’t find it anywhere. Guess I can’t hit that reset button on my 5” long Bermuda. :(

    Hey Doc!
Long time follower of your videos. I’m also a fellow Georgia native (Marietta area). We just had some hardscaping done on our backyard to level it and had the entire backyard installed with Tif Tuf Bermuda sod.
Unfortunately, I’ve allowed it to get entire too long. I’d love to scalp it and follow your recommendations, but I’m worried now that it’s mid-September that it’s too late as we should have some cooler weather soon.
What would you recommend? I have some disease spots, thinning areas, and some other issues I’m looking to address. Thanks for the help, and always appreciate the videos!

I have zoysia and if I cut it below the second highest level it looks scalped. My lawn maintenance guy keeps telling me to scalp it. He says you have to train it to look good when it’s short. Just as you say, I’m afraid it’s going to kill it, because it does look horrible when I don’t keep it high. Is it possible to kill it if it’s scalped? My lawn was put in three summers ago. BTW I live in GA too.

Doc- can I do this with new sod laid in April? It’s been 100 degrees for 24 straight days and 45 days with no rain in Texas. I have irrigation so have been able to keep everything pretty green with deep watering but not sure if I could scalp my celebration Bermuda. Have had a little trouble with grass developing because the sod I got was in between dormancy and coming to life. Enjoy your videos! Also should I aerate? I put down PFG balance when sod was laid, and have put one treatment of PGF Complete. From then on I’ve done Green Shocker and Dirt booster plus. I’ve also done 2 treatments of Double Kill

Hey Doc, I have a tall fescue lawn in Middle Tennessee, its "pretty" thick but a LOT of weeds, including a total infestation of mature Dallisgrass. Its a rental that didn't get the love it needed over the years. My question is if I seed Bermuda into it in like Sept. then like a double application of pre emergent in Nov a couple months later, then a pre emergent in Feb when it starts warming up would the Bermuda grow? Also, would it eventually take over and spread out?
