Lawn aeration is great when it comes to decompacting soil. The problem with lawn aeration is the machine is very invasive in the soil and makes a massive mess.
The better solution is to use a lawn scarifier. Scarifiers dig into and take out 1/4th inch of the thatch layer. much like a tiller without the wings a lawn scarifier digs out the actual thatch layer without leaving you with a ton of useless plugs all over the place. The thatch layer is the upper root mass of the grass that is slightly above and slightly below the soil surface. When the thatch layer gets to thick it doesn't allow water and minerals to pass through properly. which is why thinning the thatch layer out is an important part of the lawn care process.

Definitely agree here i haven’t aerated in 7 years now I just run the sun Joe twice a year awesome video
No doubt..!!
Finally took your advice and went to get my own dethacher but sunjoe and others were sold out. I decided to buy a cheapo from amazon. Like so many amazon thinfs these days, it appears they're all coming out of the same factory now so i figured brand doesn't much matter.
Just finished last night and ready for seeding. I only used the scarifier cuz my soil is uneven and awful, removing rocks and such that came with my last topsoil load. Once i fix that and it's as smooth as your front lawn I'll use the dethatcher attachment.
Between this, tenacity, and barenburg seeds I'd better have a good lawn this year.
Rad! Glad to hear you're out on the lawn!
Ginga… I listened to you years ago
When you were informing people about these machines were being introduced.. Glad I Listened..!!
Single handedly the best thing I have ever done ✅…!!!
Rad!
First saw the Sunjoe two years ago on your channel, just used it for third year two weeks ago and fertilized. Got a lot of rain after and it's starting to look fairway quality. A couple neighbors asked me how I do it. Told the to watch your channel 😊😊
Rad!
I dethatched my backyard twice with the greenworks dethatcher for an upcoming overseed with Lawnlife's TTTF/KBG (hopefully today/tomorrow) but now I may just go ahead and use the tractor tow-behind for a scarify as well to get a full and proper prep. Always had good luck with that tool before any type of seed application. Just need the weather to agree with me!
awesome! great product from what i've heard
Sunjoe is a great little machine. It's amazing how much stuff gets pulled up.
indeed! thanks for sharing
I am not aerating my lawn ever again. I used to aerate every two years and it seems like it propagated unwanted grasses. I killed off the unwanted grasses and used a Greenworks dethatcher and reseeded with Rhizotomous TTTF. If needed, I will dethatcher with the Greenworks dethatcher and might try liquid aeration from YardMastery. Thx for the video.
Aeration is very good to your lawn especially when you use compost instead of sand after that.
Thanks for all your information!! This past summer and fall I put a ton of effort into the lawn, including prepping for the winter. In March I could see the lawn growing in greener, thicker and less weeds. I do love my SunJoe 😊 just would be nice to have a bigger collection bag 😮. Thanks again
When aerating, spread compost over the lawn to fill holes and some lays on top. Overseed using Tenacity to prevent foreign growth. Both aerating and loosening the soil at the same time. Allowing existing grass roots to spread and grow, compost eating up the clay, and filling with seed.
thanks for sharing
I use that machine along with liquid aerate and it has certainly helped. Here in CO the ground gets hard as a rock and this helps keep it softer.
I’ve been doing the same. Lots of humic too.
Got the sunjoe last yr but I only dethached. Will scarify this hard CO soil this yr. The Ryobi is cordless though? Might have to switch up. Hate the cord dragging around.
@@silenta4423 the cord sucks… if I had Ryobi batteries already I’d be tempted! If Ego ever comes out with one I’ll jump on it.
Right on! You're climate and soil is almost the exact same as what i have here in Utah
@@silenta4423the cord on my Sunjoe is annoying. It always needs moved, and unplugs itself all the time. The only thing with battery machines is if you have a big yard, you’ll have to have multiple batteries or just take a bunch of days to do the project. I’m looking to get a pull behind dethatcher or aerator for my tractor.
So basically if you don’t have the issue that lawn aeration is solving then you don’t have to do it. Awesome such insightful video
Don’t have to, correct! Buuuut, it’s a good opportunity to get nutrients straight to the roots ;-). Aerate then throw down some fert!
Thanks for watching! appreciate the comment
Exactly. The missing key here is soil type. If this was clay, it would be a different story.
@@bigpapa21tx1 it is clay
Thank you for your video. I learned a lot. And you've saved me money $$$
Great to hear!
All good points for both. I have the Sun Joe version.
What is the best way to deal with:
1) grass suffering due to mole tunnels underneath (after eliminating the mole)
2) grass suffering due to tree roots (redwood) stealing most of the water under the grass top layer
I was thinking about a serious focused area of plug aeration (not the whole lawn) plus adding 1.5 inches of sand + compost & over seed as needed. Thoughts?
You're on point! I would do the entire lawn while you're at it. aeration with the addition of sand to fill in the holes is a fantastic plan.
I love my sunjoe. Your review on it was why I bought it. Also why I became a subscriber
love it! thanks for the support
More points to consider. Thanks for posting.
youre welcome. have a great day
Gotta prevent the crab grass in my area. No new spring planting allowed. Can do for fall though. Cool tools.
I find that mountain in the background to be quite incredible.
come visit! It's amazing
Digging the content bro! Also noticed your company billboards during my last cruise on I-15! Keep up the great work!
hey!!! Thanks for commenting! Great to hear from you
Dead thatch is called the mat layer. Evry turf lecture and lab at umass we were taught that. Ginja great work on your lawn all the time!
awesome! thanks for sharing. Slay that lawn!
Can’t wait to use my sunjoe and its scarifier. I noticed you used a blower to clear out the removed material. What bout using a lawn mower instead?
I prefer the blower. Feels faster and gets most of it
Great work my brother. always great information.👍🏻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Glad to help
Thanks, I just had my lawn aerated two days ago.
Welcome
Sorry dethatching would take me about 8 hours on 2-1/2 acres. There are days I think about paving it.
Agree
Love it. I will try. TY!
right on!
Hey Ginja, Love the Channel and the info you provide!
I have a couple of questions.
First, does the scarifying process that you showed replace the aerating? I dethatch and aerate with over seed ever fall (my lawn is 7 years old, new build, had been rough getting it going in the beginning) and would like to get it down to just using one machine if possible!
Second, I have the Sunjoe dethatcher with the scarifier attachment, do you think the Ryobi battery powered is as good (I saw that you were using both)? I love the sunjoe but I get beat up with the cord! Would love to switch to an all battery powered machine. Thanks Bro! Again, Love the Channel!!!
Hi Ginja, sorry to bother you. I absolutely love your channel. I just wish that you were also in the south. I live in McKinney TX. I was all hiped and ready to go ripping with my dethatch and scarifier until you mentioned that this is not great for Bermuda. I also loved all your episodes on weed control and looked towards tanacity, but again hesitant towards Bermuda. Do you have recommendations or a place that I can be pointed to, to best help me in my area? Thank you so much for all that you do!
hey!!!! so about this...... ideally you want to use a verticutter to cut the runners. the scarifiers commonly get runners bound up in the machine and causes a massive issue. here's my recommendation for those with bermuda. scalp the lawn down as low as you can. then do a dethatch just above the runners. then if you'd like to run the scarifier and thin out the runners do it at 5mm setting, one above the lowest settings. great way to do it and you'll have great success. Slay that lawn!
Totally recommended for Bermuda. Every Bermuda grower should be doing this.
@@dallasjones9034 verticutter absolutely
Nice...I see you upgraded to a gimble camera mount. No more shaky hands or rotating camera angles! Ginja stepping up the video game.
Would you recommend scarifying for Zoysia after the spring green up? You didn't mention Zoysia, but it grows with both stolons and rhizomes. I'll be fertilizing for the first time this season in a week or two.
Vertical cutters may be a better option. The major issues is the scarifier blades are not sharp enough to cut through the runners and commonly the stolons and runners bind in the machine as a result
I really like my Sun Joe!
joe's a super star!
Awesome! I want to buy SunJoe but it's been holding me up since I have a TTTF lawn. It's a bunch type grass. I believe it doesn't repair as I have had dead spot for years and it never filled in. What are your thoughts on dethatching a TTTF lawn?
Works great. The scarifier will also help. Just keep in mind a spring or fall over seed goes a long way for bunching type grasses
Does this also work well for tall fescue in regard to thinning out the lawn but growing new shoots. My seed was from Twincityseed - Resiliance Orginal. Also dealing with the begginings of fungus. Wanted to put down bio stims with mycorrhizal fungi
works great for tall fescue but a bit harder since most tall fescue is above 3" tall. you'll need to get the grass down to 2" before using this method.
OK Ginja I see the IFA bag which means you must be one of my neighbors! I’m over by American Fork Canyon. Are you close by? My lawn needs a lot of help!
I'm in the valley! See lawnmastersacademy.com
I learned not to dethach zoysia grass. It’ll turn the section you dethached (before realizing they have runners)yellow in 2 weeks. 😢 South Mississippi, D’iberville here/ warm season grass.
interesting. never heard of that happening. what you could do is use the dethatcher on a higher setting. you'll still want to get the garbage debris off the lawn.
Should you de-thatch and then scarify or vis-versa?
They both do the same thing. The thin tines just aren’t as aggressive. The different companies called the cartridges different. Allett calls the thin tines the scarifier, the thicker metal blades the dethatcher but also have a verticutter.
depends on how bad the thatch problem is and if your debris problem is really thick and sticky. if the debris is loose i prefer to dethatch first then scarify. if the debris won't come up off the surface i prefer to scarify first then dethatch.
Great tip
Glad it was helpful!
So would you recommend to dethatch the lawn every Fall and Spring even if your thatch layer is fine?
I've decided to stop aerating my lawn, and to only dethatch and use liquid aeration products. Every year, I aerate, and end up stirring up new poa triv growth.
i hear that. good luck getting rid of the poa this year.
What do you do to get rid of Poa Triv?
@@ryanfassett6816 For the longest time, there were two options:
1. Cut out the patches of Poa Triv + reseed or lay sod.
2. Kill with multiple treatments of Roundup, and reseed.
But now, the product Velocity PM is available to residential customers. It's designed to target and kill Poa Triv and Poa Annua. Golf courses have been using it for years. Lawncare channels are just starting to test this product, so I'm hoping it actually works. But one big problem right now: it's very expensive! A 16oz bottle costs over $550.
I experienced the same thing by aerating. I will no longer do it. How does the liquid aeration work for you? I was thinking about trying it?
@@ryanfassett6816 I cut it out, and replace with patches of sod. I could seed, but since I always notice the Triv in the Spring, I'd rather have instant grass than take the chance on Spring seeding.
Last Aussie 😁. Ginja . Proof is in your lawn 💥
Thanks!!!! If youre not first you're last
would this be good for a tall fescue? Also, when is the best time to do something like this?
Hmm! 🤔 I didn’t know that I didn’t know about that!!!
Cool cool 😎
I have an unrelated question: I have KBG and live in Denver, CO. I just realized I have quite a bit of poa annua in my lawn this year. Can you help me get rid of it? I used Anderson's preemergent before I realized it was in my lawn. Now, with the Spring here, I have it everywhere and boy am I mad at myself for not seeing it sooner. Do you have any recommendations on how to get rid of it? Thanks! Love your channel!
Currently testing out using a growth regulator for co trolling poa in kbg
this seems fine for you, BUT what do you do when you have 32000 SQ. FT. OF GRASS!! this then seems like not such a great idea. no cheap ryobi or sun joe will last even a single pass on my STEEP hillside (plus the surface roots here and there). i got a bad knee (5 surgeries) was looking for a replacement for core aeration. i am guessing paying someone to core aerate is my only option. what do you think????
Whats the best way to get the thatch off of your lawn after you have run the de-thatcher over it? Ive tried multiple ways, raking, running the lawnmower with bagger attached over it, and none of them work very well.
I use my backpack blower. Works great
It depends on what type of grass you have!
Their isnt a downside to core aeration, each time i do it the cores i pull get a little deeper so it is working. I have a power rake and the main reason you wanna run that us to strip out the dead growth to allow it to breathe and it helps you shorten the HOC. If you want good advice on lawncare take a look at what they do on golf courses (they topdress with sand, works better than peat)
4:44 Every golf green twice a year 🤘🏼
True true 👍
Ginge why don’t you use the attachment for your allett. Also if you use ryegrass you don’t need to dethatch.
I prefer the others over the allett scarifier
How long did it take to dethatch your beautiful long man beard? Hope it grows back soon. 😊
Your videos are always inspiring and informative. Thanks buddy.
took me 5 years hahaha
Look at those mountains beautiful. UK
Thanks for the comment!
I have a question how to get rid of moss. Is your professional opinion.
From what I found was that you need both scarifying and aeration
Your video must be pretty popular. The Sunjoe is no longer available on Amazon.
what about St Agustine grass
The point is usually people doing videos tell people which items they recommend not which equipment they get paid to sell
Well.... for a person so confused in showing two machines that are competing products I'm not sure what to tell you. You seem to be pushing an agenda that doesn't exist. I don't work it rep either company. What you chose to do doesn't bother me either way. Thanks for clarifying
They say you shouldn’t aerate after you put crabgrass preventer on, do you know if scarifying would effect crabgrass preventer?
It will effect your products
Uuum grass clippings are great compost for grass , also don’t you add some nice organic topsoil instead of sand .
they are when you do it right. in this instance it wasn't done correctly. compost would be a great solution if he didn't have a boat load of clay. which is why we are amending the soil
I just aerator my lawn today and going to lay down Halts fertilizer in the morning
awesome! Glad to hear you're out on the lawn!
@@pestandlawnginja I really enjoy working on my lawn
I use the mower to pick up the thatch hehe
Nice
When is the best time of year to do this to a tall fescue lawn in WI? My lawn looks like your neighbors at the beginning of each year.
Spring and fall
Is dethatching recommended for St. Augustine as well?
you can do it as long as you stay above the stolon layer
Since you said not to use scarifyer on St. Augustin. What should I use to lower my thatch?
St Augustin runs off stolons and won't have thatch. If your referring to the debris you can use a device like the sun Joe dethatcher attachment on higher settings above the stolons to remove lawn debris.
I tried dormant seeding this winter should I still scarify my lawn?
I wouldn't unless the seed has established
So I have an agri-fab pull behind core aerator, was thinking about investing in one like yours. Do you think it's worth it?
The dethatcher and scarifier combo is by far my favorite lawn tool
I’d like to know what to do about clay. My whole backyard is clay. I have dumped tons of manure on it in the past years but after a year of nice grass it goes back to yuck. Course the two big oaks don’t help. 😡
The clay usually isn't causation to bad grass. so many benefits to clay, it holds the most amount of nutrient and also water.
with that said the possible side effects to clay is having to much water in the soil. so watering properly is the most important aspect.
If you want to amend the soil and change its composition my suggestion is to sand level the lawn with playground or washed mason sand. I have a few how to videos on this subject.
You used a Ryobi but advertised a Sun Joe
Yup.... we used them both for different reasons. I don't work for either. Not sure what your point is or if you missed the talking point during the video. Have a great day
What about Zoysia? I've been de-thatching it every spring and it removes a ton of thatch. Should I continue?
as long as you're not over doing it its totally fine. i'm mainly referring to the scarifier
Ginja, what do you recommend for Bermuda? I have my Sunjoe ready to go
scalp and a dethatch that sits above the runners. Here's the deal. for bemuda using a verticutter is the way to go. it cuts the excess runners. the reason why the scarifier isn't good on bermuda is because the flails are not commonly sharp enough to cut the runners and it binds in the machine. causing a mass amount of frustration. but a good scalp and light dethatch is awesome especially in the spring time.
Please expand on horizontal dethatching.
😅
my triangular approach has 5 simple steps
@@pestandlawnginja ...another way to say it might be, first go one way, then the other, to not confuse the folks.
Can I use this on a creeping bentgrass backyard golf green?
verticutter would be better but this will work
Can I still scarify and dethatch this week, when it's too late? I'm West Jordan
Yes
Is there such thing as over scarifying?
Yes for sure. Scarify causes a bit of stress
Do you bag your grass when mowing
Me personally... depends on how often I mow. Once a week mowing I bag. Anything 3x to 6x per week I mulch. Great for the soil and grass when done properly
Great content as always! Have been following you from Norway from the beginning. Im surprised that you dont have 500k followers by now. How can we help you grow your channel? Have a great weekend my friend =)
Love it! Thank you! I'll keep working hard. Appreciate the support
What setting do you use on Sun Joe scarifier?
The lowest when using the scarifier and the zero setting for dethatcher
I have no thatch, only compact soil.
there you go, perfect
I’ve done both for years on Bermuda and it works. Your information isn’t totally correct.
not impossible, best to use a verticutter. these style machines commonly grab the stolons, especially on virgin lawns
Every time I used the scarifier in the past it broke the machine because the soil is so hard. Be careful.
best to get water in the soil for sure.
Is the ryobi better than the sunjoe?
I don't get it why it's called a detatched if it does not detatch thatch..
And what is those things sticking out of your ears?
its interesting for sure. in europe they call our dethatcher a scarifier. ryobi recently made the change to calling the scarifier an aerator.
@@pestandlawnginjaI'm in europe (Norway) and just got a lawn aerator, which is actually a combined vertical cutter and power rake. 🤷♂️
What kind of grass do you have?
Ryegrass in the front and bluegrass in the back
4 mins in. Why do I feel marketed to?
Choose what you like… but after scarifying your lawn roll out a 1/4” layer of organic compost. Your lawn, soil, micro-organisms in the soil and our waterways will thank you.
Great tip!
Aerate every few years (in the Fall) and you will not have thatch. Fertilize in December (or just prior to ground freezing) and you will have the first greenest lawn in the Spring guaranteed. 25 years lawncare and landscaping ... retired.
unfortunately every area is different and different species of grass have different thatch growing habits
@@pestandlawnginja Good rebuttal.
Why was I watching this video and saying he reminds me of Lawn Ginja. Then oh man it is him!!!! The new beard threw me off.
bahahaha, love it!
Scalp before de-thatching. Its more effective and a much easier clean up.
very true
People that say scareifier and not scarifier, WTF? If you rip up your flesh you will get scars not scares.
I think scar is cooler but

Scary fire lol
💯
Ripping out good grass doing more harm, stop lawn abuse. What aerating does allows water to go deeper into the lawn, grass roots will follow. The best thing to do is lightly rake the lawn that the grass is standing not matted, Water deeply once a week, do not cut below 2.5 inches. Aerating in the fall is better than spring.
Ryobi is pronounced ree-o-bee.
In Japanese pronunciation yes. In the American language no. Do you pronounce croissant with a perfect French accent? Hahaha 😆
How ever DO NOT THATCH ON CENTIPEDE. You will ruin it.
Indeed
🧔
that's what i'm talking about!
You wearing toe shoes?!
Toe shoes or no shoes
Waste of money and time.
Could be
This really depends on your soil make up. I have heavy clay soil here in the south and need to aerate to get compost and water down to the root zone. Dethatching is good for some but not for all.
I have heavy clay
