I know I've said this before, but your cinematographic and editorial values just keep on getting better and better! I absolutely screencapped 12:53 for a screensaver... just wow. We love our otters here in South Carolina USA as well... our population is doing so well that some have been relocated to more northern areas where the population has declined. Thanks for our weekly dose of "mindfulness!"

Mr M is a mechanical genius! Narrowboat Will once again proves he's a hero... and a blooming otter as the cherry on top! I remember when I lived in NW Scotland & spotting my first otter. Absolutely magical. Like my first Golden Eagle & red deer!

I have seen an otter once. It was at dusk as I walked the dog, and a head rose from the winter waters of the Tyne and stared intently at my collie.

Thanks for the shout out! I remember the early days of experimental biodiesel where the innovators converted their tie-dyed painted VW Micro Buses to run on used cooking oil from McDonald's and Burger King and the exhaust did smell like the fast food.

Excellent camaraderie on the high waters in getting the property shaft fixed!!!
At 8min 43 there is a shot of a little house fixed onto your boat which with little tubes fixed together. I had one of these in my garden a few years back and was thrilled to watch leaf-Cutter Bees at work making little cocoons for their new offspring. I was so captivated, I took some fantastic up close photos of them! Have you had any use your little house?
Oh, I would be chuffed to bits to have a Leaf Cutter Bee nesting in my little house. Those photos that you took must be amazing; if you get time, would you be able to email them across to me? In my house at the moment, something is renting a room, but it isn't a leaf cutter; it is something that uses a cement-like paste to seal the entrance? I'll look it up. I learned a long time ago to never say 'this is perfect.' Life took a real spiral after me saying that but one chapter finishes another starts. Though look at the community that came to help you!! You and Fran I would say would be on a similar wavelength. The weed would make great compost, the river trust could compost and sell it? Otters, like river meerkats, cute and sleek through the water. Good evening Vanessa what a great interesting vlog and full of fellow vlogers to greet and help u, beautiful evening scenes as u rowed down the river for the otter spotting cruise but I'm glad u did manage to see one even if it was the next day. After taking a turn for the worst and 5 days in bed l almost 4got it was Friday and nearly missed u🙄, I've got the sensitive scalp nerves and bad headaches still but some things don't heal that fast so I've been told. Congrats on spotting the otter! They're my favorite animal after my dogs. I've never seen a fresh water otter in the wild, but I've seen the sea otters that hang out along the coast of California. Well done, you!

Thinking back ,1991 was the last time I cruised the Fosdyke and Whitham. No weeds that Summer but no Otters either.
Hi Garry, I can't imagine what it would look like here without any weed? I have got quite used to the green landscape around my boat now! There is an otter program here which may have started after 1991 to encourage them. That seems to have made a real difference here. Thank you for your comment and stay cool in the sunshine.🦋🌻

We used to see otters regularly when we were moored on the Little Ouse. We found the best time was around 05.30 in the spring and summer. Got up one morning after it had snowed and our pontoon was covered in otter footprints - and long ‘scrapes’ in the snow from their tails

Beautiful vlog Vanessa, and congratulations on spotting the otter. Congrats too to Mr M for reconnecting the drive shaft to the gear box, it is a potentially catastrophic event, because as the prop slips backwards it fouls the rudder too so you loose steerage as well as forward momentum. Congratulations on spotting your first Otter 🦦 so jealous. You’re very lucky to have people around you that know how to fix things. It could of been expensive if you didn’t. The weed is a big problem this year I think, the heatwave hasn’t helped. Lovely vlog, thanks Vanessa. We’re camping in Ely at the moment and enjoying the waterway. Going to walk to prick willow or go to Wick Fen later

Im with Brewster Vanessa, the photography in this vlog was awesome...the golden glows on the sides of the NB's so beautiful. The sunsets on the water. Even the pesky weed looked really pretty...Is the little wooden boat (dingy) new, I dont remember seeing it before. Glad Mr M and helpers fixed the engine and that the recycled vege oil is going well. Dont forget that address, want to get your package in the mail before xmas mail starts banking up. thanks for another fun few minutes...oh and congrats on fulfilling your 'otter' dream, wasnt he a beauty!!!!
Hi Jenny, thank you so much for such a lovely comment.😊 The boat that we are towing is called Little Alice but it is an upgrade on our first Little Alice which we sold as Zephyr decided it was too small for her!🐾🐾 We put it in storage during the colder months and use it when it gets warmer. Lovely vlog again. Great shot of the moon with all the detail. Hopefully you are somewhere where you can watch the meteor shower that peaks tonight.
If the prop issue was the bolts needing tightening between the propshaft and the coupling, then get new nylock nuts or it will happen again, and the slipping will permanently damage your propshaft.

Saw a pine marten on the banks of the Menai strait last night, first one I've seen in many years.

Have you ever been to Amersham? My GGGGG Grandfathers were the "Wellers" of Amersham and High Wycombe who established the brewery there. A museum is there with their photos and legacy. They owned 1,000s of acres in the area 151 pubs- 9 of which are still operating! My Grandfather's brother sold his shares of the brewery and with his sons set sail for N.Z...establishing the Weller Whaling supply company in Otago. The TikTok and RUclips song "Wellerman" that went viral just recently is my family's song! 😃 Sure would love to see a video on that area...🥰 I believe the Chesham moorage is 3.5m from Amersham?

Hi there. I used to be a boater and one of my favorite rivers was the Witham and onto Boston. I don`t don1t know why it just mademe feel so good. I hope it has/had the same effect on you two.

Oh my gosh this weeks vlog there was so much interesting content throughout.it was superbly amazing.I was thoroughly spellbound by the sheer awesomeness of the wonderful wildlife that you so brilliantly captured in stunning form on your astonishing adventure.just total ace comes to mind.would it be possible to let me know.was your narrowboat extremely easy to purchase from a boat agent.also was there a tremendous amount of red tape involved in the whole transaction.what was the approximate time scale from start to completion of the sale.before you could actually have your boat lowered into the canal.so the both of you could begin to enjoy your totally wonderful wildlife continuous cruising adventures in earnest.I would like to know.is there a need to add more insulation material in a narrowboat cabin.or is there sufficient amounts of insulation already installed with in the area-of
the boats interior.was the whole transition easy from living in a house in suburbia with all the amenities to hand.then up root to live your life in a narrowboat for the foreseeable future.have you a very reliable Wi-Fi system onboard.is it very efficient.does it have a very fast download speed anywhere that you might be on the canal while continuously cruising.I’m curious to know.did you retain your original doctor and dentist when moving onto your boat.how do you collect your mail whilst cruising all week.do you know how many electrical appliances can you run at one given time.without seriously draining the onboard batteries.is there some sort of battery usage indicator.that tell you when the battery is near to dangerously depleting.I truly think your a very creative genius when it comes to lovely your superb freehand drawings of the lovely wildlife in there natural habitat surrounding.what an amazing journal you have.it’s utterly phenomenal in every sketched portrait.depicting the absolutely stunning wildlife in such awesome detail.I do admire your brilliantly dedicated attiribute towards nature’s wildlife.it’s so profound.I hope your sister Heidi gets better soon.your certainly a good otter spotter .what a truly amazing sight.just loved that crazy otter diving into that thick green pea soup.duckweed.he looks so hilariously funny bobbing up and down I laughed at his antics what an unwanted disastrous calamity to befall your narrowboat prop shaft .disconnected from the engine.but mr mindful saving the day with his amazing mechanical skills.have a marvellous cruising adventures the whole week through.

Now, I shall answer your amazing questions:
1. We saw Alice Grace advertised at Aston Marina and I really liked the pictures on the website. We drove 3.5 hours to take a look at her. We walked through once and then drove off to look at two more boats, but Alice Grace was all we could think about. We put an offer in and bought her; three months later, we were going to the marina every other weekend, straight from a long week at work to spend a couple of days on her. She was already in the water, so no craning in was required. We were lucky as this was before Covid and the steel price increase.
2. We have not had to add any insulation but as is often the case with steel boats on the water, the woodwork like door and window frames is in need of some TLC which we are planning to do soon.
3. The transition to boat life has not been a problem, but we have adapted and changed things that we have done along the way. Life throws challenges at you wherever you live and boat life is no different; the difference for us is that we love this way of life and so that makes overcoming hurdles easier, I think.
4. Wifi is really important as my teaching work is all online and now that I make vlogs, I also need a good speed to upload to RUclips. We have a big mast on the roof linked to a Huawei box which covers the 3 network, I also use my phone to hotspot as this is O2 and recently we found that both were not so reliable on the Chesterfield so we bought a little EE box which we put in the window and top up when we need it. This one is back up for when the other two fail as the other two are much cheaper.
5. Doctor and dentist: I was very honest ( big mistake) with my GP and told them that I would be CCing in a narrowboat, but could I please stay with them for my asthma checkups and medicines?They struck me off.
I now use the guest patient system which means that you walk into the nearest GP, register as a visitor ( it takes about 16 days) but mine took less recently and then you can see a GP and get medicines. My dentist is private in Essex and I would never leave them as getting a dentist now is very, very difficult, so I book check ups for when I go to see family that live nearby the dentist, and I have stopped eating sweets!🤭
6. Post: Post is mainly sent to family or post restante services at post offices that we will be arriving to.
7. Electrical items: We limit the amount of electrical items that we use and certain things like hairdryers, you just cannot use unless you have a generator. If we buy something, we look for lower voltage use or USB chargeable items. Recently, I bought an electrical bread oven which runs if the solar is good or when we are cruising. There is a panel on the wall which shows us how many volts of electricity that we have coming in and when this drops to 12v, we start adapting usage or run the engine to get it back up again.
I really hope that I have answered your super questions properly as I am not the most technical minded human being?

I’m surprised the canals still have water with the hot summer & drought in the UK.

Hi David, until followers of the channel started asking about buying a copy of my journal, I really didn't think about publishing it and I am overwhelmed and really chuffed that people want to have a copy. At the end of this year's boating adventures, I am going to publish it and then hopefully anyone who would like to buy a copy, can. I want to do it in as a sustainable way as possible, so I am exploring that now. As for the wonderful otter, when I stopped looking it appeared! Hi Steve, the company that I was buying it from put up the price to an unaffordable rate, so I contacted Crown Oil but the amount I need is to small for them to deliver. Sadly, I’m back to diesel until I can find a new supplier. I want to keep using HVO and it’s so frustrating to not be able to get it. Thank you so much for your lovely comment.
