One of the many things your videos point out is the owning and living on a narrow boat is not all plain sailing. It seems to me to involve a lot of hard work and determination.
Hi Peter, living on a boat isn't simple, but then nothing in life is, so if you want to live the floating life because you love the positive parts so much, then the bits that require the hard work and determination are worth it. Thank you so much for watching. Have a super rest of the weekend, take care🌻🦋
I am so pleased that you enjoyed it. Boats are hard work sometimes, but they are a lot of fun most of the time too. Thank you for your lovely comment. Have a super week, take care🌻🦋
Oh Alice Grace looks neat as a pin! Well done on all your hard work - I'm sure she is gliding through the water and going faster than before 😄 How lovely to be on the river Severn and all it's wonderful sights - and the fish pass is amazing with the heron standing guard! Such a descriptive poem and amazing artwork as always - thank you! Love to you, Mr M and Zephyr xxx
Hi Lizzie, you are right, Alice Grace is gliding through the water much better. I hope that it lasts though🤞 Thank you so much for your kind and lovely words. I bet it is all looking beautiful up at Foxton Locks at the moment. Take care🌻🦋
With South Africa having been under British rule in the colonial era, many places were given British names because the surveyors were often expats probably very homesick. So it is that in the arid Kalahari there is a small community with the name Severn on the banks of a dry river bed.
Vanessa, I simply cannot get over the God-given talent you have for both verse and art, and may I add photography too ! This weeks ending was really a treat to be sure. I loved seeing you and Mr. M working on Alice Grace's blacking, and I do hope this water-based product proves to be very durable to protect your boats hull. I wish you well from Avondale, Arizona and thanks so much for this one.
I am so touched by your kind words, thank you so much. 😊🤗 I also hope the blacking stays on and does its job well🤞 so far so good. Have a wonderful week, take care🌻🦋
What an enjoyable vlog from boat upkeep, to historical tidbits and then this fascinating story of the fish bypass. I hope your boat hull experiment is successful and the Alice Grey is well protected in years to come! Keep on keeping dear Vanessa. You delight us all! hugs from Canada, Wendy
It was hard work but my dry dock buddies were great company so it made it a lot of fun too.Thank you so much for your lovely comment. Have a super rest of the week. Take care 🌻🦋
Loved the video even more the second time. You are such a talented person. Filming, editing, drawing and Poetry and on top of that blacking a narrowboat hull!
Oh, I am so sorry about the double upload, you didn't need to watch it again, but it is so kind of you to. I had some technical issues with the first one. Your comments are so kind and I really appreciate them. Thank you so much. Have a lovely rest of the weekend, take care🌻🦋
Ms. Vanessa, call me an odd duck for noticing, but such care being given to the hull, what preserves and protects the bottom of Alice Grace? By the way~~I have viewed other narrowboat videos, but oh child, none compares to the painstaking lengths and methodology that you devote to your videos! And the art work at each video’s end and poetry is completely off-the-chart smashing! You’re superb, my dear! ~Eddie of Arkansas~
Hi Eddie, you are not being an odd duck at all; we decided not to paint the bottom this time as it looked fine but next time we will. I am so pleased that you are enjoying the vlogs.Thank you so much for your lovely comment. Have a super weekend, take care🦋🌻
Hi Vanessa. Looks like that blacking did a good job. Glad it dried quickly. That fish viewing area was amazing. Beautiful drawing and poetry. Take care. Nick
Keelblack definitely dries the quickest out of the blacking options, but does it do the job...only time will tell?🕰 I though the fishing area was great too. Thank you so much for your lovely comment. Have a wonderful week, take care🦋🌻
Another wonderful vlog. I love the stories that you reference for towns, rivers and wildlife you come in contact with. They add a unique perspective to the beauty of the canals and your poetry and art work. Thank you. Keep it up Vanessa.
I'm glad you enjoyed it- I love the boisterousness of the River Severn, but I'm glad that I'm not on it at the moment! Have a super rest of the week, take care🦋🌻
From our 6years of living on a 70ft narrow boat, we found that blacking the hull is of lesser importance than ensuring that your anodes are in good condition and soundly secured to the hull, and of the correct type for canal water. The other type, which look similar, are for use in seawater. We had 8 fitted to our boat, a bit over the top some would say but the hull inspection when we had to sell it was found in excellent condition and very reassuring for the new owners.
Thank you for such an interesting episode. I look forward to hearing how the water based blacking has fared compared to traditional bitumen. I hope it met all your expectations. Take care. 👍😀
Hi Andrew, so far so good I think with the keel black, but we have decided to take the boat out in 2 years rather than 3 just to have a thorough check. Thank you for watching, take care🌻🦋
Oh my goodness, that bridge is so high! 😱 I can't imagine people jumping off it!🤩 Thank you so much for your lovely comment. Have a wonderful week, take care🌻🦋
Enjoying your vlog again, so relaxing. Indeed maintenance is important, you are doing a good job. The pansies are in full bloom. Fish passages are certainly important to maintain fish stocks. Your conclusion of the vlog is always quite an experience. Hans
Thanks for mentioning the swifts... i think at one time we were afraid their numbers were decreasing, but i now think that's not true... i saw plenty one summer. Lovely detailed description of the buildings and bridges along the river. I do like your river vlogs
Hi Sian, I'm glad that you have seen a lot of swifts this year. Some new builds are now being fitted with swift bricks for nesting birds which is an excellent idea. Thank you for your lovely comment. Take care🌻🦋
If you are going to hold onto those cables in the locks, please buy some heavy duty leather gloves. The Cables can give you metal splinters that are very painful and sometimes need emergency room visits to extract as well as Tetanus shots !
I’m going to stick to ropes from now on. That lock is particularly gentle so the lock keeper suggested just holding on with hands. Thank you for your advice. Have a wonderful week, take care🌻🦋
Hello Vanessa, just started to follow your vlog, and enjoying every minute of the way. Thank you so much for all your knowledge. I'll just have to keep watching you for ever. Thank you again Anna from Verona Italy xxxx
Welcome aboard, Anna!👋👋 It is so lovely to know that you are enjoying the vlogs-thank you so much for watching! Have a wonderful rest of the week, take care🦋🌻
It was definitely a workout putting the paint on 6 times, so I kept rewarding myself with tea and piles of biscuits which defeated the object of the workout!🤭 Thank you for watching. Have a super week, take care🌻🦋
Good evening Vanessa & Zephyr 😊 Did a great job blacking your boat while Zephyr sunbathed lol 🤣 I’ve a lot of catching up to do but I’m loving every one of your videos 🤩 love your soft voice too xx
Great video. Love docking at Stourport. We've used it for years. We were in twice this summer with our 2 boats. Hope to meet you on the canal one of the days.
It's a great dry dock isn't it? I'll look out for you on the cut. Thank you so much for your lovely comment. Have a super rest of the week, take care🦋🌻
Hello Vanessa - greetings from Poland. A wonderful video. So much to see and learn. Fascinating story about the fish bypass. Well done CRT! Loved the sand martins and learnt something about them that I didn't know. See! - your channel is not only entertainign but is educational too. As an aside - I recommend a RUclips channel called Westcountry Wanderings. Paul amongst many other things is walking the whole of The Severn Way from its source to Bristol in stages. He happens to have reached eactly where you are in the video.
How are you? Are you out of hospital now, Michael? Thank you so much for your lovely comment and I will look up Westcountry Wanderings.👍 Look after yourself, take care🦋🌻
Loved the fish bypass - twait shad is definitely one I've not heard of before Fascinating Looking forward to your summer adventures on the river Take care 🌼
I also didn’t know about Twaite Shad. Every day’s a school day!😂 Thank you so much for your lovely comment, Margaret. Have a wonderful week, take care 🌻🦋
Oh, my gosh! The fish passes and viewing windows were amazing! The CRT gets my great admiration for taking on such a big and expensive project all for the protection of the fishes. But, I can't help wondering, how do the fish know the way to use the passes? It seems incredible that they can sort it out and find their way through safely. Smart fishes!
I agree with you about how wonderful the fish project is. The fish are clever aren’t they to find their own special pass like that? Thank you so much for your lovely comment. Have a wonderful week, take care🦋🌻
Hi, just to let you know that your supposed to put your rope around the slider in the lock this give you the most control. Keep one end of the rope on a cleat so you can either give it slack or tension as required. Holding on with your hands is not a good idea.
Oh Bob, I am so sorry. I had a technical problem with the other one and had to re upload it. You don't have to watch it again. Have a super rest of the weekend, take care🌻🦋
@@themindfulnarrowboat I'm glad it wasn't something worse. But hey, I'm still watching it again. Good luck with the blacking - it isn't always easy being green. You too, both of you, re the weekend. 🥂
Hi i forgot to mention that the keelback was a good choice it says on their website that it is Bitumin based just a different recipe so i think you should be good to go ,the cormarant shot was so nice and the fish picture /movie was brilliant so good your videos are getting to be BBC class David Attenborough move over thank you for your time in producing such wonderful content
Thank you so much for getting back to me. I keep hearing horror stories about the hull paint, so it is nice to hear some good news. Have a super week, take care🌻🦋
Hello Vanessa. 16th May. Greeting from hospital in Warsaw. Fabulous video. Lovely cruise and what a wonderful fish pass. Nature at her very best. Beautiful sandy Martins. I wonder how far they've travelled?
How long do you think you'll be in hospital for, Michael? I hope you can hear the birds singing outside the window. Thank you so much for your lovely comment. Get well very soon!❤️🩹🌻🦋
I’m sorrta’ old, so when I ran across your channel here, it warmed an old heart. I’m a newer subscriber, and I’m attempting to catch up on your past vlogs, because they are absolutely fantastic! Forgive my ignorance (I am, after all new to your channel), but who is the mysterious “Mr. M.” that did the hull prep with you? Do we get to see the Mystery Partner, or do they enjoy their privacy? Have a Beautiful Day!
Thank you for finding my channel. I am so pleased that you enjoyed the vlog. Mr M is my husband and you won't see him unfortunately as his work has a strict code of conduct about being on social media. Have a super rest of the week. Take care🦋🌻
I hadn't heard of a twaite shad either, but now that I have, I would really like to see one. Thank you for your lovely comment. Have a super week, take care🌻🦋
That is so kind of you, thank you so much! I have an Etsy shop where I sell my journals, but I am just waiting for some more stock to arrive. Have a super weekend, take care🌻🦋
As a sea sailor, I've not experienced below waterline freshwater coatings. Does the narrowboat get refloated and dried out again to allow it to be moved enough to coat those parts of the bottom resting on the gridiron? Really enjoying your vlogs which are always a treat to watch together with your wonderful sketches and your prose. Keep up the great work!!
Hi Richard, thank you so much for your lovely comment. I am so pleased that you are enjoying the vlogs. In answer to your question about painting the bottom of the boat, as the steel is really thick there, you don't need to treat that part and the anodes to a good job of taking most of the rust damage. Thank you once again. Have a super week, take care🦋🌻
You are probably right.😢 I will keep on hoping that it lasts though.🤞 I better start steering the boat more carefully now, just in case!🤭 Have a wonderful week, take care🦋🌻
Apparently, you don’t need to black the very bottom of the boat because the water isn’t mixing with the oxygen right underneath. That’s what I was told anyway! 😄 Thank you for watching. Take care 🦋🌻
@@themindfulnarrowboat oh really interesting, thank you for responding so quickly.....sorry to be so full of questions, I am trying to learn as much as I can before I make the final decision!!
Just a word of caution , when in a lock , it maybe an idea to use a rope not your hand to hold on to the side- to prevent a broken arm ... Especially as we do so enjoy you art work!
I thought exactly the same about the rope, but the lock keeper recommended using hands as the lock was a slow one. It is lovely to know that you enjoy my artwork though. Thank you for your kind comment. Have a super week, take care🌻🦋
Sorry I've fallen so far behind on your blogs. I follow 18 bloggers and have fallen so far behind on many. But catching up slowly... On your river Severn adventure are there enough moorings on river Severn?? 24hrs or longer?? I love your wonderful vlogs. How is the new blacking going 6 months later?? Just incase you have not updated your thoughts so far on the later vlogs I'm catching up on.. God Bless you and family. John
Hi John, please don't be sorry for falling behind; it's not always possible to find the time to watch vlogs. It is lovely to have you back watching though. The keel black seems to be holding really well and when we have been in clear water, we've noticed that it looks like it staying on. We will be keeping a close eye on it though. Have a super week, take care🦋🌻
Hi Ann, apparently, with steel narrowboats the underneath is so thick that you don't have to treat that part; or so I've been told. Thank you so much for watching, take care🌻🦋
It is the same vlog, Roy so you don't have to watch it again. I had to re upload it due to a technical problem. Have a super rest of the weekend, take care🌻🦋
We did underneath the boat last time it was blacked so we decided to leave it this time and do it again next time. We're going to take the boat out a little earlier than needed because we are keen to check how the Keel Black is doing as we haven't used it before. Thank you for watching. Have a super week, take care🌻🦋
Hello Vanessa, and Zephyr. Well, you have been busy and looks like Alice Grace is all “ship shape” now. Lovely video and looks like the Severn is providing you with many points of interest. Have a good week, take care and I look forward to the next episode.

Eco friendly non toxic Bitumen? I almost died laughing. You should wet blast the bottom before applying epoxy primer and paint. What about the flat bottom? there was no access.
I am so pleased that you got a laugh out of the video and I am very relieved that you didn't 'die laughing!' Thank you so much for watching.

I would have used 2 pack, have a nice week.
I have heard 2 pack is excellent. Thank you for watching, Mike have a super weekend, take care🦋🌻
A spray application is a much more effective way of coating any surface. Is this product suitable for spraying?
I’m not sure about that but that is such good point. Thank you so much for watching. Take care 🌻🦋
I recon the hard shell will "chip" off when hitting hard objects whereas normal blacking is more flexible.
Time and ££s will tell eh?😅
You are probably right.😢 I will keep on hoping that it lasts though.🤞 I better start steering the boat more carefully now, just in case!🤭 Have a wonderful week, take care🦋🌻
@@themindfulnarrowboat Thank you,you too.
I'm on ferry to Santander on my motorbike on Wednesday for a few weeks back in Spain.👌
The boat looks great, how do you protect the underside of the boat, especially where it is resting on the beams?
What's going on? We saw this episode a day or so ago! 🙂
Sorry about that, but I had to reload it due to technical issues. You don't need to watch it again. Take care🦋🌻
Do you not have the underneath to do too? I get confused as some do but others don’t? Love your vlog x
Hi Ann, apparently, with steel narrowboats the underneath is so thick that you don't have to treat that part; or so I've been told. Thank you so much for watching, take care🌻🦋
I am very curious. How do you paint the boat bottom surface that was in contact with the wood support of your boat?
This time, I didn't paint the bottom as you don't have to every time, but next time, I will.Thank you so much for your lovely comment, take care🦋🌻
Hi,
Do you remain living on the boat whilst it is in a dry dock, or find alternative accommodation?
Thank you.
Hi Keith, I did on this occasion, but some dry docks don't allow you to. I chose one that did. Thank you so much for your question. Take care 🌻🦋
your back again
It is the same vlog, Roy so you don't have to watch it again. I had to re upload it due to a technical problem. Have a super rest of the weekend, take care🌻🦋
@@themindfulnarrowboat thanks i always watch your videos a number of times thank you for time in producing them
Did the keel get painted too? If so, what about the bits that are resting on the supports (soz for all the questions 😊). Great video as usual btw x
Thank you so much for your lovely comment. Apparently, you don't need to paint the hull, but that is a good question. Have a super week, take care🌻🦋
Hi ,can I ask, did you do the underneath of your bout ,if not would, ent the bottom rust away ????.
Hi Nigel, Alice Grace has a ship shape hull but now, it is time to polish and paint the rest of her. Thank you for your lovely comment. Have a wonderful week, take care🌻🦋
@@themindfulnarrowboat Oh, I can see you’ll have need for copious amounts of elbow grease!! Take care and have a fabulous week.
🤎🌳🐠🐠💛🐠🐠🌳🤎
how much does it cost to use the dry dock area?
Hi Christian it varies from dry dock to dry dock but the Stourport Dry Dock was £350 for one week. Thank you so much for watching. Have a super rest of the weekend, take care🦋🌻
DOES THE UNDERSIDE GET PAINTED
It can do but we do ours every second blacking so next time we will. Thank you for your question. Take care🌻🦋
But you did not paint the underside
I'm confused...haven't I seen this already? 🤪
Yep this is a repost
I'm so sorry. I had a technical problem, You really don't have to watch it all again. Enjoy the rest of your weekend, take care🦋🌻
Sorry about that. I had a technical problem with the other one and had to take it down and start again. Have a super rest of the weekend, take care🦋🌻
As long as I'm not going mad, I'm happy 😊 Have a lovely weekend too.
It’s been “a minute” since I’ve sat down to visit you. Thank you for yet another vlog. I hope your more environmentally friendly blacking works! How ingenious is that fish bypass. Well done CRT! I always find piece here💕
Thank you so much for your lovely comment and for watching the vlog, Jayne. I also hope the blacking works as it has real mixed reviews 🤞🤞 Oh and yes a big well done to CRT for the Fish Pass- brilliant🤩 Take care🌻🦋
Who is Mr. M? I've never seen him.
He is my husband. He can’t be in the vlogs due to his work commitments and the code of conduct he has signed which means he can’t be on social media. Thank you so much for watching. Take care🦋🌻
What about the bottom of the boat?
It didn't need doing this time around, but maybe next time, I will do the bottom of the boat. Thank you for watching. Take care🌻🦋
Oi where is uour hat! If wind blows your hair on that paint you will regret it 😂 mind being water based would prob wash out 👍
😂 Luckily no paint in the hair, just on the hull! Take care🦋🌻
Have a super week, take care🌻🦋
Couldn't you have used a roller?
I used both, together. Thank you for watching. Have a wonderful week, take care🌻🦋
So what about the bottom? You don’t clean or paint or examine the bottom? Surely there isn’t enough room to crawl under to do that.
We’ll do the bottom of the boat next time as it was okay this time around. Thank you for watching. Take care🦋🌻
You keep saying “we.” Is there someone there with you?
My husband is onboard for part of the week but his work commitments and sensitive nature of his job means that he can’t be on social media. Thank you so much for watching. Have a super week. Take care 🌻🦋
@@themindfulnarrowboat That’s what I was thinking.
Deja-vu lol😂😂😂
I know, I'm so sorry, it's like Groundhog Day! 🙈 Have a super rest of weekend, Simon. Take care🦋🌻
