You know, there was once a time when I thought "Dark" magic wouldn't seem so bad if you removed all the aesthetics that make it LOOK evil. That was before season 3 happened and Viren turned into a completely bat-$#!+ insane Ozai
Dark magic corruption is slow, that's what makes it so insidious. And yet even a single use with the noblest of intentions can start changing you, as Callum found in his little dream.
Raistlin 34 perhaps but his dream also made it perfectly clear that his body was able to reject the changes and the corruption to open a new path to learning sky magic.
Raistlin 34 more like Sol Regam smelled the scent of whatever Callum killed to cast that chain snake spell mixed with dark magical energy, hence the reason he said “I smell death”. Considering the fact that killing magical creatures is part of dark magic I bet it does leave behind a foul scent that only dragons can sniff out.
