It's been a while but I'm back with another dark magic spells in the Dragon Prince reversed video! This time I decided I might as well put in all spells from the first three seasons now that the first arc is complete. I changed/added some things that were incorrect or missing from my initial video as well. Viren, Claudia, and Aaravos seem to be up to no good with all these spells!

Lalotte red I think that smoke spell uses cremated remains of whatever the smoke takes the form of. Awesome but kinda freaky.
I never thought of that. That's so twisted and dark. They're literally using dead bodies of the Moonshadow Elves, allies of Runaan, Ethari, and Rayla. That's dark magic for you.

One of my favorite things about this is that dark magic spells are usually imperative (meaning they’re ordering the magic to do something), while the Draconic spells are more passive, like they’re asking the magic to do something for them.
Well it seems more like for the primal magic, saying something in draconic and writing the rune basically kinda writes things into existence.
This is pretty haunting the voice actors are excellent.

Maybe he meant about the *way* they delivered their lines all kinda dark and creepy-ish. (Obvi not backwards lol...) I was actually surprised at how nice the acting is for some.

@@achannelhasnoname5182 oh yes, but Claudia for example her spells always seem to sound really on par imo. And her father... Two of an seem good at being dark with normal lines, not even spells.
But I get what you're saying about some spells being heavily editted thou... D: shame cause some actors are so good.

@@reaper7769 I didn't realize it was them!!!!! Practically none of the other assassins spoke but I still got attached to them! I hate Viren even more! Crushing worms is one thing. Using the ash of sentient basically, human beings is... I don't even have a word for how evil that is!
That would explain how the other kingdoms were so sure about being attacked by elves.
The "Ash of Fallen" spell requires the ashes of a dead creature or person, which are sprinkled into a lit blood candle. The incantation is spoken (backwards, of course), and then the user blows into the flame, which spawns smokey figures that take the form of whoever's ashes were used. The role they play is dependent on the last words of the spell (or first, when reversed).
So yes, Viren uses the ashes to conjure smokey figures of the dead Moonshadow Elf party. And because he designates them to be assassins, that's the role they play as he sends them to attack the other kingdoms.
However, the video failed to notice that Claudia also uses the Ash of Fallen spell, because it mistranslates her "of fallen" as "and bone".
Claudia's version in season 1 is "Ash of fallen, rise again: smokey seekers". She uses the ashes of Xadian wolves, simply because that's what she has on hand, and has them seek out Rayla, Callum, and Ez in the tunnels.
The Ash of Fallen spell could presumably be used to conjure a smokey dance partner, smokey chauffeur, smokey body guard, or whatever you want. And it would take the form of whatever ashes you used.
It's unclear whether the smokey figures are limited to performing tasks their living forms could have done though. You could conjure a smokey mount in the form of a horse or dragon, but perhaps not in the form of a child or a mouse.
Judging by what we see in the show, the smokey figures have the ability to interact with solid objects themselves (the wolf bites Rayla, the assassins equip their former weapons), but they're impervious to outside forces (Rayla's blades pass right through).
The spells being said backwards reminds me of Gravity Falls when Gideon summons Bill Cipher and possesses his father
And to think that those aren't even the only reversed messages in Gravity Falls.
For me, it kinda reminds of when Zatanna dies her magic.
If I remember correctly, that one was just "Backwards Message" x3

Kinda neat how the primal spells are just phrases, but dark magic is always more of a command or a claim over something else.
Reminds me of the Rings of power, Like how Celebrimbor made the three elven rings not to dominate, but to heal, inspire, and preserve. Sauron on the other hand, made the One, the 9, and the 7 with the purpose to dominate and control

That spell is truly dark and horrifying. I think that was the spell that corrupts his human form from then on in. You never see him in his corrupted form before he did that spell and he also did his best to hide it from Harrow by never looking at him. He just says: "I will leave you with your grief" looking at the floor as he walks away.
I also believe he stole Sarai's soul and not just her dying breath. You can hear a faint "Noooo" from her voice after Harrow throws the spear killing the dragon king. That's not what she would have wanted Harrow to do but she was bound to the spear because of Viren.
Wait what how did I miss that? Now I need to go back and watch.

I didn't realize that Dark spells are English spoken backwards. It has to be actual in universe canon. Cause Callum never heard Claudia say the spell he used to unbind the chain. Claudia said "Slithering steel bind them", he used "Slithering steel unbind". And the spell worked. Callum figuring this out, and how to make it work in his situation makes him an unquestionable magical genius.
I thought it was implied that he looked up the spell in her book.
@@Kalobi When would he have had time to do that? I think he held the book as a medium to help channel the dark magic. It seems like in most cases you still need an artifact to cast dark magic, aside from the creature you sacrifice.

), unless it's the chains for Slithering Steel.
@@Kalobi I dunno. Viren almost always casts with his staff. And so did the Dark mage from the season 3 opening.
Doesn't Claudia casts most of her spells with her book anyway? I think that book is an artifact.
I'm curious though when do you think Ezra would have had time to read the book for a spell to unbind the Dragon.
@@rutger5000 Idk, they're always a bit fuzzy with time in this show. But assuming the book is well indexed, finding a spell to unbind chains would probably take no more than half a minute tops. Also, wouldn't he have to look up and search for the creature he needs anyway? If he has to rummage through Claudia's bag for a worm anyway, looking up a fairly simple spell in the book shouldn't take that much longer.

I've got practise because of Zatanna's spells in like...any medium she's in as almost all her spells (aside from very specific ones) use reverse incantations like Dragon Prince's dark magic

Even though the concept of speaking the dark magic spells is simple, it sounds really awesome
It's interesting how Claudia's spells are always in monotone, but Viren's actor always puts real feeling into them.

Just a few things I noticed:
1. It is "Ash of fallen", not "Ash and bone"
2. You forgot the spell he used on Rayla's dad in the flashback
Otherwise, this is really cool and I'm glad someone made this!
the spell used o Rayla's dad was ''Steal. The. Voice'' the one used on Callum.
Actually, it was "Steal the breath" this time around. The spell is different because the hand is red and the ball is blue this time around, whereas they were both green for stealing the voice.
The are variates of similar spells such as slithering steel bind them
And slithering steel unbind

In my opinion the spells sound better unreversed compared to the reversed words they use in the show

Actually Zatanna (at least is in the Young Justice Cartoon) says each word backwards while they turn the entire sentence backwards.
So, normally you'd say "Use your essence"
Zatanna would say "Esu ruoy ecnesse"
While Viren/Claudia say "Ecnesse ruoy esu."
Or the Bill Cipher school of spooky evil spells
Wow, just wow. I never would have guessed that the dark magic words are actually reversed words describing what is happening in the spell. I love all the background sounds with the spell like the faint whispering or the voice distortion.

I just know Book 4 is going to be Stars. I believe they drop hints at the end of each season.
Book 1 Moon - simple
Book 2 Sky - Zym hatches at the end of Book 1
Book 3 Sun - Sol Regum appears in the last scene of Book 2
At the end of Book 3 we see Aaravos' caterpillar thing n a star cocoon.

Actually, it's going to be Earth. But good observation! There planning on seven seasons if it gets renewed that many times (I hope it will)! I think it's Moon, Sky, Sun, Earth, Ocean, Stars, and Dark Magic. (But who knows!)

you could argue that Viren is the one actually wielding the magic, but wielding the magic of a spell is not the same as casting it; we saw that much when Aaravos cast spells for Viren to use before he was captured by the Katolis soldiers.
Imagine being virens va in the recording room and the directors are like, “alright we need you to say ‘your soul is my treasure’ repeatedly.”
damn I never thought the vice actrors would try to deliver them well but damn. the translated versions sounded so much like the characters.
Somehow it's even creepier when you understand what they actually say.
Funny thing is, this is how me and my friends have roleplayed the verbal components of our D&D spells for over a decade now. I would also bet money that the story of Dragon Prince was an old D&D campaign of the writers. It makes perfect sense if you think about it.
My headcanon is that the mystical energy of the spell warps the words of the speaker, so casting dark magic isn't hard in any way other than the corruption factor.

In my point of view this sound effect has a deeper meaning: When you are using dark magic you are destroying the balance of the primal magic and by that you are on a completely different side; a REVERSED and wicked side.

You missed the one used in the flashback when Callum sees the truth of what happened to Rayla's parents. He used a Dark Magic spell to literally steal the air from Lain's lungs, disabling him.
You forgot the dark magic spell Viren used on Rayla's father, Lain, when they fought.

Did anyone else notice that the first spell Claudia does is the same as the one Viren did here? 3:33 "Smokey seekers" "Smoky assassins" They were just risen for different purposes.
I thought that they used universal dust that could make "smoky anything" But I don't think dark magic works that way. I think that was actually the dust of wolves and the assassins who came to kill Harrow. Them killing Harrow was awful, but they never deserved that!
It says in the book version of moon that they are the ashes of wolves who died under a full moon

I binged watched the entire series in a day not too long ago. I loved the hell out of it, couldn't stop! My one itty-bitty complaint about this universe though is their portrayal of dark magic, how it's "irredeemably evil" and such. I tend to be drawn toward dark spellcasting classes in various games, warlocks and necromancers and such. I always RPed as someone who just considered darkness as an opposite of light, neither good nor evil. The Dragon Prince universe kind of made me question that and feel bad. xD
I think the 'evil' part is that mages have to use magic of drained creatures
@@LeaderoftheFates Yup that's what I mean. If the requirement to play my character in that universe is to become an evil soul-sucking demon, well...so be it. :)
Some people have said that Dark Magic isn't explicitly said to be evil and the only thing we know is that the main characters don't like it. I think they're forgetting how it's corrupting Viren, and is currently corrupting Claudia's mind and soul.
I get why people might say that. They probably don't understand why Rayla was upset with Callum for using Dark Magic with a creature that was already dead or why the humans couldn't just take pieces of creatures like their horns or their snot and leave them living but I think the nature of Dark Magic whittles away a person's value of individual life. Viren looks at humanity as a whole, he sees things solely pragmatically and he probably believes that his goal is what's best for humanity but he really doesn't care. When Sarai died, he was literally pulling out a jar to capture her dying breath; I mean, he did it because it could kill Thunder in the future but can you get anymore insensitive than that? Besides that, what Viren wants might not be what's best for humanity. In fact, the way the stories going makes it seem like he might have convinced everyone, including himself, that what he wants is humanity's prosperity but what he really wants is power.

You know, even I watched that show, I couldn't understand what they're saying in backwards. But watching this video, I can see why the writers are writing dark magic backwards, and the dialogue is malevolent. I like it because it adds to the theme of man attempting to control nature.

Do the characters who do dark magic speak in reverse English or does it magically come out reversed when they speak? Some sounds, like /t/ and /g/ can’t be pronounced in reverse, since they need you to increase the pressure inside your mouth and then suddenly release it at a particular point. Suddenly releasing it before there’s any pressure differential makes no sense.
I believe they magically are said backwards
I think they say the spell normally then reverse in in the computer, but in the "show-world" dark magic makes you different when you're performing the spell?

The talking backwards thing reminds me of zatanna the smallville version where she says whole phrases backwards rather then the seperate words
At first I thought it was lazy to just reverse the voices but now I see it's quite clever, dark magic is seen as an abomination that was never intended to exist to the dragons and evles so it makes sense that to do it the humans have to use their language in ways it wasn't intended

Ok so they seem to have an interesting magic system involving dark magic and normal magic.
With primal magic its like you a bringing a thing into reality by saying and writing its name. Like "fulmunis" is lightning. And by writing the rune and saying the name it brings the thing into existence.
With dark magic you are telling a material to due something. And it has to have some accuracy to work.
Hence why Claudia saying "Bring life to these limbs" didn't work.
A.) she didn't address the material (But this might just be me nitpicky)
B.) Its his spine that doesn't work, not his limbs.
Viren using longer and more complex commands also shows how much more experienced he is than Claudia at this.
Finally, that last thing that Aaravos casts. I think you are able to use humans for dark magic. He was clearly using the same rules as I talked about before. Except he was using Viren as the material. Creepy.
I really hope that in the up coming episodes he gets a redemption arc because he’s one of my favourite characters

Omg 1:20 so this is the spell that he uses to turn someone into coins and in the part where he blacks out for using dark magic for the first time (after dying) he has the weird dreams and the king guy (idk father of ezren) but he uses the same spell in the weird dreams (I think) so idk that’s cool
I think you forgot about 2 of them: Episode 8 DragonGuard: "Htaerb Eht Laets/Steal The Breath" And Episode 5 Breaking the seal: "Natit Amgam Eht Dnif/Find The Magma Titan"

The voice actors are amazing doing some reversed voice!
Actually given the way they punctuate the sentences I think they're recorded forwards, look at the ones where Claudia has an exclamation mark- you'll notice how that first (last once you spin it around) is the most accented by the exclamation point.

i believe you forget the spell which claudia casted in season 3 when she casted the protection shield spell against the fire from the dragon
I believe she drew a rune and then said a draconic word, if you were listening, that would be primal magic, well both since it was a rune and it used an essence of another being, but Claudia never spoke backwards so it wasn't fully dark magic. It was just Sun magic corrupted with dark magic, creating a circular barrier made of Sun and dark magic. Same with "noctu igne" allowing Claudia to realise an orb of pure black fire, or something.
I just realize something the more you use dark magic the more humanity you lose the first stage of using powerful magic if white hair , stage 2 probably gray pale skin, stage 3 black eyes show darker pale crack around the eyes , and the final stage Huger for power from magical creatures.
Man Viren is really good at being a really good villain, makes you wanna punch him in the face!

Why isn't anyone mentioning that they animated the backwards words backwards, so that when you play the footage in reverse it syncs correctly to what they're saying?
